Usually, I just bag them up and put them on the curb on trash pickup day. But this year, I would like to use them as mulch. I heard this was possible. March is the month when live oaks, water oaks and laurel oaks drop their leaves. You can rake the yard one day, and it will fill up with leaves the next. It is best to wait until the majority of the drop is over to collect the leaves. But don’t kick these leaves to the curb because they can be used as free mulch. Fallen leaves are like Mother Nature’s mulch; you just need a few tips on how to use them. To use the leaves as mulch in your landscape beds, it is best to chop up the leaves in some manner. Do this by raking the leaves in a line and mowing over them with lawn mower, or putting them through a shredding machine. Chopped up leaves break down more quickly and help to improve the soil. Apply the leaves to the landscape at a thickness of 3-4 inches deep. If the mulch layer is too thin, weeds will grow through it. A

It also was home to Kelly’s gym equipment — which she loves — but quite frankly, the basement provided little inspiration to work out. This is a musical household. Kelly is a little bit country, and Jim leans toward rock ’n’ roll — and together, they love to jam with their two daughters, Tyler and Devon. The family wanted their new basement to be a musical retreat — somewhere they could play some tunes together, or maybe sing a little karaoke. The girls also were looking for a place where they could hang out with friends, and host a sleepover or two. All in all, this family wanted the perfect medley of a basement — a space that would have something for everyone. To transform this diamond in the rough, we first had to frame it, insulate it and wire it. Next came the drywall, and then we were ready to rough in four separate zones for this roomy basement

I have been thinking about adding an olive tree to my edible landscape. Will an olive tree do well here in North Central Florida? We normally think of olives as a Mediterranean crop that is grown in Spain, Italy or California. They prefer a climate that has temperatures between 50 and 120 degrees, and receives 200 to 400 hours of chilling (temperatures below 45 degrees) a year. Olives will grow in soil that is well-drained and has a pH between 5 and 8.5, and they are drought-tolerant. This is sounding pretty

promising right? They don’t stand too much humidity in the spring and summer, though, so that could be a fallback, but we do, sometimes, have dry springs and summers. In fact, many folks are growing olives in their backyard, and some farmers in South Georgia are trying them as a commercial crop for the oil. There are several nurseries in the North Central Florida area that sell olive trees in containers. The trees have a beautiful silver foliage, deeply furrowed bark and can reach 20 to 30 feet tall. They are evergreen and flower in the spring. Trees can require a pollinator partner to ensure fruit set. Some of the varieties that are growing well in Florida are Arbequina, Manzanillo and Mission. You will produce olives in a few years from a healthy tree growing in full sun. But you cannot eat olives fresh off the tree. They must either be pressed into oil or brined for table olives. Two years ago I had a new furnace installed. My heating bills have been reasonable, but a recent home inspection discovered there was no ducting in the crawl space. The inspector said the crawl is open to the outside air, and that there are gas pipes and gas fittings in the crawl. What should I do? Call the installer and the local building authorities. From the photos you sent I can see the crawl space is being used for the cold air return to the furnace. A furnace has two sets of ducts: one to supply conditioned air to the home and one to recirculate the conditioned air back to the furnace to be reheated or cooled and sent back to the supply ducts. A cold-air return open to a crawl space is not acceptable when there are natural gas pipes and gas fittings in the crawl. Even a small gas leak can be a serious problem if it is pulled into the fan

system and then forced into the home. The crawl space also is open to the extremes of the outside environment, cold, dry air or hot, damp air, and the furnace and air conditioner will work overtime to overcome these extreme temperature and humidity changes. A duct system is definitely required. The duct is a closed, sealed delivery system that will improve the comfort levels in the home, reduce your energy bills and prevent any potential gas leak from entering the home where it could accumulate and become extremely hazardous.

can almost smell the hyacinths, feel the sun on my face and see the bright emerald of the tender green shoots reemerging in my garden. Oh my goodness, I am so ready for spring this year. I’m excited to pass this seasonal disorder, with all its joy and energy, on to you. If you have the bug, cure your spring fever with these four fun steps: 1. FILL YOUR TABLE WITH WONDER: For an instant pick-me-up, set your dining tables for spring. Pack each place setting with lots of whimsy. Start with an interesting placemat, like a wicker charger. Then layer up with a mix of plates, perhaps a basic white dinner plate topped by a spring salad plate, then finished with a sorbet cup. Clear glass is a great addition to a spring table, whether it’s your stemware or serving pieces, like a simple glass cake plate that serves as a riser for your favorite cute-as-abutton tea pot. Have fun with your spring centerpieces. Start with wonderful containers to hold grasses or flowers or succulents, live or artificial. Then add in accents like little votive candles. A little mossy woodland house is a fun addition at the base of the centerpiece. Looks like home for a gnome. 2. DRESS UP YOUR DOOR WITH SPRING GREENS: Your front door decor tells everyone

Spring fever solution: Get decorating. On your patio or porch, focus your attention on creating comfortable and attractive seating areas. what to expect inside. But that doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of time on a look that grabs attention. Have just a second? Hang your monogram on the door, entwined with a few twists of spring greens. For the stunning but simple look, we hung one of our wooden paddles (used as a tray or serving piece usually) from the door knocker. Then we mounted a metal monogram. Need a change? Spray paint the letter white or a playful spring color like magenta, tangerine or apple green. Finish off this door treatment with strands of spring greens or ribbons.

If you love the simplicity of a front door wreath, less is more this season. If you can’t find a wreath you like, make your own like we did by connecting seven inexpensive moss balls. Stop there or give the wreath added movement by weaving in faux spring vines, like ivies and honeysuckle. You could thread in a spring ribbon, too. I am over the moon about inexpensive wicker wall baskets. Hook them to your door knocker or an “s” hook hung over the door, pack them with flowers, and it’s spring. 3. LIVEN THINGS UP WITH SPRING LINENS: All it takes is a few yards of spring fabric to

give your home new energy. One of my favorite tricks is to take a yard of fabric, hem it on all sides, and use it as a table topper. Turned on the diagonal on my dining table, it sets the stage for seasonal magic. Perk up your place settings with spring napkins and placemats. It doesn’t take much to add some sparkle to your table. This is also the perfect time of year to get going on those window treatments you’ve been putting off. Everything outside your window is going to start getting pretty, so frame your windows with a great treatment. My favorite looks are Roman shades or panels, jazzed up with interesting finishes. Another simple but gorgeous finish for shades and drapes is to outline the sides and bottom with a Greek key tape. 4. WAKE UP THE GARDEN WITH GOODIES: I don’t have a lick of ability when it comes to planting or tending a garden, but I do love to accessorize them. Dot your beds with interesting focal points like a bird bath, a trellis, a garden statue or an urn holding a shrub or flowers. Remember, when it comes to garden decor, less is more. Just a touch here and there is all you need. On your patio or porch, focus your attention on creating comfortable and attractive seating areas. Here are some tips for choosing the perfect color palette for your home: FOLLOW THE NUMBERS: Do you believe in numerology? I don’t, but there is a school of thought out there that seems to have an idea of how to help you pick colors via numbers. Sounds weird, right? These numerologists base their belief on the fact that there is a relationship between numbers, color and the alphabet on the theories of Pythagoras. This is how it goes: Take each letter in your name and find its corresponding number in this guide below. Well it looks like almost everyone is taking my advice and choosing to make 2014 a great year. I hope everyone had an opportunity to look over the January market report and the impressive gains from the same period last year. Year over year sales have increased by almost 100 sales while median home prices remained basically unchanged. Market stabilization is here, or almost here in almost all areas of residential real estate. Foreclosures by most reports should taper off dramatically by years end according to most analysts and real estate economists which in turn will help the stabilization process. I have spoken to several local builders over the last couple of months and the ones I spoke to have seen an increase in both new home construction and renovation requests. With time on market reducing as well in the January market report at some point demand should increase for both existing homes and new home sales.
