GARDENING Mistletoe — more than a decoration anging mistletoe is a holiday tradition during the Christmas season in many U.S. homes, and its distinctive green leaves, stems and white berries are easy to recognize. This plant has a long history. In ancient times, Celtic Druids believed mistletoe was a holy plant because it rooted closer to heaven than any other plant. Its evergreen leaves, which are quite noticeable high in trees when other leaves are absent during dormancy, seemed to the Celts to symbolize the promise of spring’s return. As history unfolded, these traditions were adopted by the English and French. Hanging mistletoe is a Christmas tradition in the U.S., while it is more commonly associated with New Year’s Eve in Europe. If you use mistletoe to add to your holiday celebration, handle with care, for the plant does have poisonous properties and is harmful if ingested. Keep the plants and decorations out of the reach of children and pets. After handling mistletoe, wash your hands thoroughly with hot, soapy water. Soon after the holidays, mistletoe will be observed in trees throughout Central Florida. In February, when

or the first time ever, my husband and I have a proper guest room. Even better, our new house has a designated “guest wing.” That of course makes it sound fancier than it is, when in reality it is a circa-1960s cinder-block addition of a couple of rooms and one bathroom, all with low ceilings, flimsy woodwork and electric heat. On the positive side, it is quiet and private. In a perfect world where money is no object, we would have done what our architect prescribed: Tear it down and rebuild. But since money is an object, my job was to transform it from a scrubby, preCinderella-at-the-ball room into one that would be fit for a princess — or at least a houseguest. My quick and somewhat inexpensive fix started with a paint job (walls were covered in my favorite color, Benjamin Moore’s Gray Owl, and woodwork in

For the windows, I had simple Roman shades made with blackout lining, and I used a horizontal variegated blue-andblack-striped Designer’s Guild fabric (Peyron in Marine from the Mazan collection) that coordinates well with John Robshaw’s Lapis Quilt, which I folded at the foot of the bed should a guest get cold at night. The white sheets from Pottery Barn are all cotton, as are the two matching Restoration Hardware bathrobes that hang in the nearly empty closet. The only other items in the closet are two PureLoft hypoallergenic pillows (www.landsend.com) in case my guest is allergic to the feather ones on the bed, and some Chinese slippers (www.pearlriver. com). The drawers of an antique Swedish dresser are empty, and there are no other

Try to run gasoline lawn mowers dry before storing for the winter — shredding fallen leaves is a productive way to run out of fuel. Old gas can absorb atmospheric water and also form gums that can harm engines. If you are storing mowers and

other equipment with gasoline, fill the tank and add a fuel stabilizer. ■■■

Fallen leaves can be blown or raked into ornamental beds, raked into a uniformly thick layer and allowed to break down over the winter to feed the soil and prevent weed germination. Make sure leaves do not pile at the base of shrubs or directly against tree trunks. Windblown leaves might need to be re-raked once or twice over the winter. ■■■

Most clay pots are not freeze-proof — they split in winter — and should be taken inside now. Spread old potting soil onto garden beds or the compost pile and use fresh mix next spring. Clean pots before storage by removing soil and fertilizer salts with a stiff, dry brush. Stack them in a cellar, garage or shed — anyplace where they will remain dry. How Much Income is Needed to Purchase a Home? Well it depends heavily on what part of the U.S. you decide to live. HSH Associates, a publisher of mortgage data, evaluated 25 major metros to see how much income home buyers need to earn in order to purchase a median-priced home and cover the principal and interest payment on the mortgage. The survey uses median home price data from the National Association of REALTORS®’ third-quarter report, and subtracts a 20 percent down payment from those numbers. The list does not factor in taxes, mandatory insurance, or home owner fees. The city with the lowest income is Cleveland with an earning of $22,000 a year to afford a median-priced home. On the flip side San Francisco would require a yearly earning of $125,072 to purchase a comparable medianpriced home. Two metro cities in Florida made the list with Tampa coming in at $26,930 and Orlando close behind at $29,631. Orlando continues to get more expensive thanks to a yearly home-price gain of nearly 30 percent and an interest-rate gain of over three quarters of a percent in just one quarter. It’s going to take another $7,180 to afford a median-priced home in Orlando as compared to the beginning of the year. Of course the largest cities require the highest salaries to afford a median priced home; San Fran, San Diego ($85,843), L.A.($79,177), New York City($71,255), Boston($68,956) and Washington, D.C($68,345). Remember these values are not based on taxes and insurance, so your income could potentially need to be double or triple to afford the total debt of homeownership in one of these metro cities. I would be willing to bet Ocala, Florida would rank well if included in this data. All in all, the room can rival just about any decent hotel suite, so it has come as no surprise to me that several house guests later, a robe is missing (really!), the hair dryer is gone and one guest’s late-night raid of our freezer left a permanent chocolate ice cream stain on the quilt. not see any damage to the shingles. There wasn’t a leak in the last rains, but when I went into the attic, I found some of the rafters were pulled loose. I have a walk-in attic and where two roofs come together — the roofer called it a valley — I could see that almost all the nails were pulled out of the ends of the other rafters. The roofer said I needed a carpenter, but I can’t afford both the new roof plus all the repairs, and it all has to be done at the same time. I’m afraid the

roof might fall in on the house. Is there something I can do until I can save enough to have it fixed? A roof valley is formed when two pitched rooflines meet at a 90-degree angle. When you are in the attic, the main rafter that all the shorter rafters are attached to is called the valley rafter. This is where you saw the nails pulled loose because the force of the falling tree limb moved the main valley rafter. What you can do is brace the valley, without trying to move it, until you can have it replaced. Find the

mid-length of the valley rafter and measure the distance from the underside of the rafter at that point to the top of the ceiling joists; add 12 inches to the measurement. Use this measurement to make a T-brace. Make the brace by nailing two 2-by-4-inch boards together to form a T. I like to use 16-penny cement coated nails that really grip the wood making it hard to pull
