Preparation key to growing wildflowers would like to establish Q:Iwildfl owers such as coreop-

sis, phlox and blanket flower along the roadside in the front of our house. We live on a graded road in a rural area, and I think it would look beautiful and attract pollinators. Where is a good place to get seeds? October and November are the months to sow Florida wildflowers for a spring bloom. The best way to find seeds is through the Florida Wildflowers Growers Cooperative. This is a group of wildflower farmers who sell their seed from a centralized source. They have small seed packets and larger bulk amounts available. My favorite offering from the cooperative is the mixed blends of wildflowers, such as the “butterfly mix” or the “bee knees” blend. You also can find wildflower seed at your local nurseries, but check the packet and make sure they are appropriate for Florida. Preparation of your site will probably be the most difficult part of getting the wildflowers going. You may need to kill off some of the existing plants to reduce competition for the sprouting wildflower seeds. Do this by covering the area with

With seven people coming and going, the couple dreamed of a master bedroom retreat where they could chill out at the end of the day, maybe with a movie and a glass of wine. Their bedroom was huge but sparsely decorated, with a waterbed taking center stage. The bed was flanked by TV trays functioning as bedside tables, and the rest of the furnishings consisted of a pair of dated dressers and an old armchair. Genny and Steve absolutely love their waterbed, so it had to stay. However, I was determined to give this 1980s relic a facelift. I designed a tall custom headboard upholstered in contrasting neutral fabrics, and finished it off with nailhead

trim. Waterbed sheets are nonexistent these days, so we had to make our own, along with a custom bed skirt to conceal the bed frame. Two stylish nightstands with beautiful wood-tiled inlay flank the bed, replacing those old TV trays. And, instead of table lamps, elegant pendant lights are suspended from the ceiling above each nightstand. We added a cozy duvet and some patterned pillows. Voila! You’d never even know this was a waterbed — until you sat down, that is. The old dressers were also staying. They were a wedding present, so they have sentimental value. We refaced them with a veneer of new contrasting wood laminates and some snazzy new hard-

Master bedroom becomes in-home retreat ware. These dated dressers became stylish pieces that will last for decades more. The master bedroom was huge, so we applied molding across the vast expanse of ceiling for an inexpensive coffered look. We also dressed up the walls with some thin batten molding to add visual interest. Over by the window, we created the cozy retreat that Genny and Steve craved. A comfy beige sofa and patterned armchair, both perfect for curling up with a book or magazine, sit atop a beautiful area rug. A wall-mounted TV is positioned above one of the refinished dressers, and an oval coffee table with an antiqued mirror top adds a touch of elegance to the lounge area. How do I treat my lawn for weed control and prevention under and around mature trees? Will I endanger my oak trees if I use weed control granular products such as a weed and feed? Likewise, would the hose sprayer and or tank-type handheld sprayers be “safe” with the liquid mixed products for weed control and prevention? When you are doing home weed control, I encourage you to read the fine print on the label of the product you are using. This goes for the combination products such as a fertilizer plus herbicide (weed and feed) as well as other

Atrazine is a serious chemical and needs to be used with caution. formulas of herbicides. The most common herbicide in weed and feed combos is the chemical atrazine. It is a serious chemical and needs to be used with caution. Read the entire label before applying it to control weeds and to prevent weed seeds from germinating. Timing is especially important if you use atrazine. The label states “do not use atrazine when temperatures are above 85 degrees F.” This means that temperatures need to be below

85 degrees for at least three days. If it warms up too much, you can have a burn on your St. Augustine lawn. The label also says “do not use in the root zone of ornamental plants.” The root zone of your oak trees extends well beyond the drip line of the canopy of the leaves. Try to avoid these areas if possible. It is best to follow the Floridafriendly landscaping recommendations and apply your fertilizer separately from your herbicide. September is the last time to fertilize lawns in North Central Florida for the year. Then, when temperatures have cooled, apply an herbicide, if needed. You can either use a hose-end sprayer or

tank sprayer to perform this task. This way, you can spot treat the problem areas in the lawn. You will save chemicals and not apply it where it is not needed. Also, check the label to make sure the herbicide is safe to use on your turf grass species. Many herbicides can harm the “Floratam” variety St. Augustine grass, so read the label carefully. can’t have too many little things or they’ll look insignificant. But you don’t want all your furniture to look as if it’s on steroids. My solution: I parked a 53-inch square leather ottoman in front of the fireplace to create a strong focal point that’s still functional and flexible. It allows extra seating or serving space near the three adjacent couches; it’s easy to clean, with no sharp edges that might injure small grandchildren. The room’s other seating mixes mohair and tartan plaids for a lively look. The book pokes through the home of Mark and Julie Wenger, who live in a small town in Kansas. t seems there is never enough space in a house for storage, but shelves can be a great place to store and display items. If you have a ton of books, then a wall of shelves is a great idea. The books serve as decoration if placed neatly on the shelves, but don’t stop there. Adding artwork to the shelving unit will add variety. Stack magazines and put out other items for display, such as knickknacks and even framed art. Do you need more shelves? If you have vaulted ceilings in any room, you can stack shelves all the way up, adding architectural dimension as well as more space for books and accessories. Consider purchasing a library

ladder so you can reach the top shelves. What else can go on shelves? Your interests and hobbies can be displayed on the shelves for a unique, personalized look. Do you collect fancy tea cups? Put them on the shelves. Do you collect elephant art? Display it. Arranging items in groups — by color, shape or texture — makes for good design. Light-colored objects look great on dark wood shelves; the reverse also is true. Items of the same or well-coordinating colors displayed together make for an interesting look.

Placing items on top of books or magazines that are laid flat gives a pedestal to your items, and you get to decide on the height by adding or subtracting books. Yun on Debt Ceiling: 450,000 Lost Sales with 1% Mortgage Rate Rise If the federal government fails to increase its borrowing authority prior to when the U.S. Treasury says it will run out of money to pay its bills, debt default is not necessarily the first consequence we’ll see, says NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun. Rather, the government could decide to pay the interest on its debt, which is about three percent of the U.S. gross domestic product, and ensure that global investors of U.S. Treasury bonds are made The government spends one dollar for every 75 or 80 cents it takes in, Yun says, so, if the borrowing limit isn’t raised, “it will be a tough decision as to where the tax revenue gets spent. Does it mean that interest costs on past borrowing gets suspended? Is it the case that some people who have been relying on Social Security checks no longer gets those checks, or some of the military jets or tanks that have been purchased will not be purchased any more?” Should the government decide to pay bills other than interest obligations, we can expect interest rates on Treasury bonds to rise as investors look for more return to compensate for the increased risk of their not getting paid. And if that happens, mortgage rates will rise, because mortgage rates follow Treasury rates. Yun says home sales can be expected to drop by 350,000 to 450,000 units for each 100 basis-point rise in mortgage rates. It’s possibe global investors will not over-react, at least in the short term, should the U.S. choose not to make its interest payments. “I believe that the global investors recognize that the U.S. will come through at the end, even if it’s a delay for a couple of weeks or even in a worst-case scenario of a few months. . . . Therefore, I don’t believe there will be immediate bond market panic.” Even so, since the economy remains weak, with tepid employment growth, any impact on interest rates would be a problem. “You are in a situation in which the economy is at a tipping point, with rising rates, and that’s certainly not a good combination,” Yun says.
