You decide to paint a room, and weeks later, your walls are a crazy quilt of paint swatches. You’ve flipped through rooms on Houzz and Pinterest and virtually painted your room online. You’ve asked your friends and your plumber for their opinions. You are still afraid to make the wrong choice. It’s okay. Consumers typically try three to five paint colors before deciding on their final selection, according to Erika Woelfel, Behr’s director of color marketing. Of course, many try even more. She advises clients of her Takoma Park, Md., firm, Colors by Zoe, on paint colors for interiors and exteriors. Here are some of her pointers. Consider the existing items in your room. Flooring, rugs, artwork and upholstery will suggest a color direction. Try to pull together these elements in your color choice. If your home is not furnished, make the paint color the last thing you choose; there are thousands of colors to choose from but maybe only one rug that you really love. Take your paint samples home. Colors you select in the Home Depot aisle will look different under the lighting conditions in your home. Don’t examine a paint sample against a white wall. Color is affected by what surrounds it, and putting a sample on a white wall will cause it to appear darker than it really is. This results in many people ell, it’s great to be back at work and speaking the language of plants again, after six months of collecting and analyzing data. It’s already been a hectic four weeks: hosting the Master Gardener Spring Festival, planting the demonstration gardens and installing a “secret garden.” My definition of a “secret garden” is one that is tilled and planted in a jiffy, before there can be any opposition to its installation. It’s exciting to have such fun gardening. While getting the supplies for the secret garden, I came across a tussock moth caterpillar. Tussock moth caterpillars (Orgyia species) occasionally occur in large numbers this time of year. Besides the annoying presence of numerous hairy caterpillars, these insects may spin their difficult-to-remove cocoons on houses, boats, picnic tables and other outdoor articles. Feeding by the caterpillars usually has little impact on SAMUEL on Page 5H COMMONS.WIKIMEDIA.ORG This living room was painted in Benjamin Moore’s Straw, a choice by Colors by Zoe, a Takoma Park, Md., firm. Hummel Club and the owners who were producing the Hummel figurines. I belong to the Ocala What’s New Chapter of the defunct M.I. Hummel Club. One of our members found this information online. Hope this sheds some light on the subject. In September 2013, the Hummel Factory, operated by Mr. Koster under the name of “Manufaktur Rodental GmbH & Co” was declared “insolvent” and the factory was closed. Then in October, the M.I. Hummel Club, headquartered in New Jersey, by ruling of the German insolvency court, also declared bankruptcy, the staff fired and all assets liquidated. This is why no one answers the telephone or any mail inquiries. As a consequence of these actions, it is highly unlikely that any of the 2012 and 2011 membership gifts that were promised will ever be delivered. If you response to your letter Q:In about the M.I. The caterpillars feed for about four to six weeks, and the adults emerge mid-April to early May. Orgyia detrita is the most common of the three species that occur in Florida. Caterpillars of this species generally are dark bodied with a red head, two black “hair pencils” projecting forward like antennae, four dense tufts of hair (tussocks) on the back, and a fluffy tuft projecting to the rear like a tail. Unique to this species are the orange-colored spots along the back and sides. Caterpillars of the white-marked tussock moth, Orgyia leucostigma, are similar looking but are distinguished by their lighter body color and yellow spots. The rarely-encountered third species, Orgyia definita, has a yellow or tan head to go with its pale body, hair pencils and tussocks. MANAGEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS: Persons disturbed by tussock moth caterpillars may wish to do some of the following: ■ Apply an insecticide to the foliage of the host trees before the caterpillars mature and begin dispersing. Only shrubbery threatened by the heavy feeding of immature windblown larvae would warrant a pesticide application. ■ Walk around the house with a broom and sweep the climbing caterpillars into a pail of soapy water before they have a chance to spin their cocoons. ■ Remove cocoons by slipping tweezers or a similar instrument between the cocoon and the wall. Wear a long-sleeved shirt while doing this, as the caterpillar hairs in the cocoon may irritate the skin on the forearm. Never attempt to kill them using a blow torch. The consequences of doing so could be detrimental to you and/or your property. Put the paint sample against a sofa, wood furniture or flooring for a better perspective. Take into account how color flows from room to room. If you have a modern house with an open floor plan, it’s important to use one wall color throughout the main floor. Add accent colors in a few carefully considered areas. Stick with white trim in most cases. Try several whites before you make a final selection. Benjamin Moore’s Simply White works well with cooler shades such as blue, gray, purple and pink. Warmer wall colors, such as yellow or green, call for a softer white, such as Benjamin Moore’s Mayonnaise. blue-gray. It’s the color of sky on a clear day. BATH: Pratt & Lambert Full Moon. To go with natural stone flooring and countertops and polished nickel fixtures, choose a shade with warm graygreen tones, such as this off-white. blog, the Painted Home (www.paintedhomedesigns.com). She is an expert at giving flea market furniture and accessories a fresh look, often with specialty finishes. We asked her to discuss some of these popular products. CHALKBOARD: There are lots of possible applications for chalkboard paint, and it makes a great conversation piece, whether on drinking glasses, bedroom walls, tabletops or drawer fronts. It’s great in the kitchen for grocery lists. Favorite brand: Rust-Oleum Specialty Chalk Board. CHALK: Chalk-finish paint (not to be confused with chalkboard paint) dries quickly and adheres to almost anything. This creates a chalky finish that sands down to a super smooth surface. There also is limited prep work besides cleaning the piece with a paper towel and Simple Green spray. Favorite brand: Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. METALLIC: Metallic paint is a bold look that should be used sparingly. Use it as an accent on the edges of furniture or on accessories to add a little shimmer. Favorite brand: Martha Stewart Living Metallic Paint. MILK: Milk paint is the perfect solution if you are looking for the chipped, timeworn look. It can flake off furniture when it dries to appear vintage. Favorite brand: Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint. MIRROR: There is a lot of interest these days in mirror-finish spray for home accessories. You can apply it on Mason jars or other accessories to create a sort of mercury glass look. It adds a layer of instant charm. Favorite brand: Krylon Looking Glass Mirror-Like Paint. DIY Richardson, the color marketing manager for Glidden Paint, helps consumers choose and apply paint wisely. Here are her tips on how to avoid stress while painting: ■ Pour paint into a smaller container. It’s more practical to carry around the paint you need in something smaller and lighter than an unwieldy gallon can. You can use a container you have on hand, or buy a small container with a handle at many paint stores. This is particularly helpful when working on a ladder. The right white Christian Zapatka is a Washington architect who specializes in design work that incorporates both architecture and interiors. He has a lot of experience choosing white paints. Here are some of his favorites. WALLS IN TRADITIONAL HOMES: Benjamin Moore China White. This white has a soft, warm tone, with a faint “greige” background. TRIM IN TRADITIONAL HOMES: Benjamin Moore White Dove. Ideal for all types of woodwork, this shade is compatible with almost any wall color. It has a clean white quality while keeping a warm tone. WALLS AND TRIM IN MODERN HOMES: Benjamin Moore Super White. For a flawless look with no trace of yellow or gray, this is it. It’s as pure white as you can get, so it’s the best choice for a modern interior. FOR A HOUSE WHERE ALL ROOMS ARE PAINTED WHITE: Farrow & Ball’s Strong White. This is a warm white without any yellow cast, which makes it great as a totally neutral background. BOOKCASES AND CABINETRY: Farrow & Ball’s All White. Bookcases and built-ins look great when painted this crisp, bright white. It sets off the wall color around it. Carry a wet cloth. If you drop paint on something, you can quickly wipe it off without having to stop and gather cleaning materials. ■ Wear an apron. A canvas painting apron or a durable cook’s apron with pockets provides storage for all the things you’ll want to have around you: an extra paintbrush, your phone or that little wet cloth for spills. Over time, the apron becomes a sort of color library of your home, because splashes of paint from each project will inevitably end up on it. ■ Invest in a good quality brush. If you buy an inexpensive brush, you’ll be annoyed at how much time you’ll have to spend picking bristles out of ■ your paint job. Ask for a recommendation at your hardware store or paint shop; Wooster brushes are often used by pros. If you’re using a waterbased paint, clean your brush by wiping it with a newspaper or rag and then soaking in lightly soapy water. ■ Consider painting trim and ceiling the same color as your walls. If you choose a neutral color for a main room of the house, painting the trim and ceiling the same color can create a unified look. This is especially helpful if you are going for a more modern or contemporary feel. Unifying everything eliminates worry about the lines. Room colors Washington designer Elizabeth Hague has been known for her calm and classic interiors since she opened her firm in 1991. She shared her go-to paint colors for five different rooms and the reasons why she likes them. LIVING ROOM: Benjamin Moore Soft Chamois. This pleasant clay color is a neutral backdrop for textiles, furniture and accents. DINING ROOM: Farrow & Ball Cornforth White. This dark, warm gray has a lot of pigment in it, which makes it rich and beautiful in candlelight. KITCHEN: Farrow & Ball Blackened. This chalky blue serves as a nice contrast to natural stone countertops, cabinets and polished-nickel fixtures. BEDROOM: Pratt & Lambert Smoke Ring. It will also be easier for buyers to compare a loan and terms from two competing banks. To accomplish that, the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) created a new Integrated Disclosure Rule, which consolidates the Truth in Lending Act (TILA) and the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA). Under the new law, the first disclosure must be given to buyers within three days of submitting their mortgage application. The goal is to fully explain a loan's term and the associated risks. Buyers must also receive a second disclosure no later than three days before closing. The second pre-closing disclosure will outline all the transaction costs. The TILA-RESPA Integrated Disclosure Rule – Small entity compliance guide includes samples of the new disclosures along with extensive explanations. It can be downloaded as a PDF through CFPB's website. © 2014 Florida Realtors® Professionally…and then some! The spring tablescapes that lift my heart are filled with intriguing layers and a beguiling combination of colors, yet feel airy and fresh. Here are five insider tips on how to achieve this delicate balance: 1. USE VESSELS AND VASES IN YOUR CENTERPIECE: Your centerpiece can be a show stealer without taking lots of time to craft. How? Create drama in a jiff by using vases and vessels in creative ways. A phalanx of three glass compotes will hold graceful tulip bloom bouquets, inexpensive cashand-carry bouquets you can nab at the florist or grocery store. Here’s the same idea, executed a little differently. A ceramic jar is used as a beautiful focal point. A constellation of small vases holding a single spring bloom surround it. How about this darling idea we hatched up at my store, Nell Hill’s, inspired by Beatrix Potter. Start with a riser, a stage that will elevate decorative elements so they are visible. Place an arresting collection of items on top, like a bunny holding a placard just waiting for a personal message from you, such as the menu or a greeting to party guests. Vertical space in the background can be filled with a lovely vase holding a spray of faux spring foliage. 2. GROUND EACH PLACE SETTING ON A CHARGER: If you like to entertain, or just want a table that fills your senses, I recommend investing in three sets of chargers. One should be a fun and inexpensive color burst that gives your table a jolt of energy, like kicky green plastic chargers, perfect for spring. The beautiful, bargain chargers come in a rainbow of MCCLATCHY-TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE Spring tablescapes are at their best when filled with intriguing layers and a beguiling combination of colors, yet feel airy and fresh. fun colors. The second must-have set? Anything that features organic materials, like wicker placemats. Shockingly inexpensive, these are another go-to tool I use when I entertain. I love to pair these twiggy mats with fine china to shake things up. The third set? Something that goes with everything, like wood chargers. You can take these anywhere from ultra-formal to casual just by combining them with different dishes. 3. MAKE MAGIC WITH YOUR DISHES: Some women can’t have enough shoes. I’m that way when it comes to dishes. I have never seen a set I didn’t want. Thankfully, the limited storage space in my home has kept my dish addiction in check. If you just have room for one set, I recommend a set of timeless white dishes, the go-with-anything essentials for any table. Then, as your budget and cupboard space allow, invest in accent dishes that allow you to completely transform the look of these chameleons. I love everything that’s old or has a vintage feel. Dishes are no exception. If you are lucky enough to have dishes that have been passed down through your family, or you’ve collected pieces through the years like I have, mix them into your spring table. Even patterns that feel stuffy or dated can be reborn when paired with newer, fresher colors and designs. 4. LAYER IN SEASONAL LINENS: I keep a few interesting 52-inch square tablecloths in my linen drawer at home that I can use to create a few different looks on my table when I entertain. Turned on the diagonal at the center of my table, they break up the wood of my table and add a shot of color, texture and pattern. Pick a few sets of cloth napkins that go well with your table toppers. Stark white napkins have won my heart and loyalty because they look crisp and clean, like white sheets and white towels. Seasonal napkins are also an ideal way to add a bit of color and pattern to your table and create a multilayered look. 5. FINISH WITH COMPLEMENTARY FLATWARE AND STEMWARE: Because I entertain so much, I’ve collected a few sets of flatware that allow me to finish off my tablescapes with distinctive style. The most important set you can have is a go-with-everything basic. Then, as storage space and budget allow, add in a few extra looks, like a set with colorful porcelain handles or faux antlers or bamboo. How about an odd assortment of vintage silver or silver plate? For a clean, crisp look, use an assortment of clear glass goblets on your table, perhaps working pieces that have slightly different designs, like an etched pattern or a gold rim. Or, have some fun by mixing together different colored stemware to pull in the various colors featured in your tablescape. Mary Carol Garrity can be reached at marycarol@nellhills. com. Martin to ask for a refund? Los Angeles Times W ell, this is awkward. Actress Gwyneth Paltrow and her musician husband, Chris Martin of Coldplay, bought a house in Malibu for $14 million, then they turned around and announced their “conscious uncoupling.” Uncoupling papers will no doubt eventually reveal who gets the John Lautner-designed home, which is set on a secluded acre of land and Paltrow surrounded by tropical landscaping. The singlestory post-andbeam house the former couple bought was built in 1972 Martin and sits on a street that has seen the likes of Kenny G, Julia Roberts and Charlie Sheen as neighbors. Architectural details include angled walls and windows, a triangular fireplace that juts into the living room, and a teardrop-shaped granitetopped island in the kitchen. The 3,650-square-foot house features heated sandstone floors, walls of glass, stainlesssteel appliances, a library/ study, an office, a gym, a yoga studio, four bedrooms and three bathrooms. There is an outdoor steam room and shower, a tennis court and a pebble stone swimming pool. Paltrow, 41, won an Oscar for her leading role in “Shakespeare in Love” (1998). Her other film work includes the “Iron Man” movies and “Thanks for Sharing” (2012). She has made several guest appearances on the series “Glee,” for which she won an Emmy, and will be in the upcoming Johnny Depp film “Mortdecai.” Martin, 37, is the frontman for Coldplay and one of its founders. The band has won Grammys for the albums “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends,” “Clocks” and “A Rush of Blood to the Head.” Coldplay will release its sixth album, “Ghost Stories,” in May. Martin appeared as a guest mentor recently on “The Voice.” Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting and her husband, Ryan Sweeting, have listed their place in Sherman Oaks at $2.795 million. They recently bought the Tarzana home of former Laker Lamar Odom and television personality Khloe Kardashian for $5.499 million. The Mediterranean-style house, built in 2004, is designed for entertaining with an outdoor living room and fireplace, an outdoor kitchen with an eat-at bar, a swimming pool and a spa. Stone fireplaces and interior arches are among architectural details. The 5,233 square feet of living space includes a family room, five bedrooms and five bathrooms. A salon/dressing room is outfitted with built-ins, shoe racks and a professional shampoo/hair station. Cuoco-Sweeting, 28, stars in “The Big Bang Theory,” which has been renewed for three years. The series is in its seventh season. She will star in this month’s comedy film “Authors Anonymous.” Sweeting, 26, is a professional tennis player. The two were married in December. Cuoco-Sweeting bought the property in 2010 for $2.4 million. The home is a single story with a walkout basement. My plans are to use foam to insulate the rafters in the have plans to build a Q:Inew energy-efficient attic and to cover the attic floor with a combination of spray foam and loose-fill cellulose. I have been told the more insulation the better, but others are telling me that insulating the attic floor is not necessary when the roofline is insulated. What are the advantages or HOMES OF THE WEEK Beautiful National Forest Living, .81 Acre disadvantages to these ideas? Your home, which is ICF (insulated concrete forms) is great for home construction. The foam walls are resistant to insect invasion, decay and high winds. The concrete walls are fire resistant, waterproof and are designed to withstand earthquakes. The insulation value of an ICF home is superior to a conventional wood-constructed home, so you do not want to allow heat to escape through the roof. By adding spray-foam insulation to the rafters, the home will be sealed on A: all sides, so why would anyone want to add insulation to the attic floor? An ICF home with a sprayfoamed roofline will be so well sealed against heat loss and air entry that the home will require fresh air ventilation to prevent moisture from collecting inside the home. Moisture produced by everyday living, such as cooking, cleaning, bathing, etc., will DWIGHT BARNETT collect inside the home and the possibility of mold and decay is a real threat. Imagine an attic that is insulated on all sides without any ventilation. You would soon have a very damp environment that could create mold and/ or rot and destroy the drywalled ceiling. Without the unnecessary ceiling insulation, the moisture in the home and attic is allowed to migrate throughout the home to the fresh air exchange system where it can be vented to the outside. Your heating and cooling (HVAC) contractor is responsible for the installation of the fresh air exchange system, which should be custom set and automatically controlled to remove the “human error factor” associated with manually controlled systems. The first thing I want to do is purchase all my plumbing fixtures, like the faucet, disposer and sink. My issue is choosing the correct kitchen sink. Because of budget concerns, I’m not sure if I will go with a top-mount or under-mount sink. Do they make a kitchen sink that can be installed both top-mount or undermount? This way I can get my sink now and install it either way later. — Karen, Texas Kitchen sinks for the most part used to be “drop-in” style sinks. Meaning that the sink was lowered into a pre-cut opening in the counter top. A drop-in sink also is referred to as a top-mount style. Then, a little over a Q: ED DEL GRANDE A: decade ago, undermount sinks became popular. This style sink is mounted “under” the counter top to create a very clean look. However, under-mount sinks usually cost more to install than drop-in sinks, and that’s why both are popular. In most cases you have to choose one or the other since they are two very different styles. But, today you can find some stainless-steel sinks called “dual-mount” kitchen sinks. Dual-mount sinks can be installed over or under the counter top. The secret is a thin and completely flat sink rim that adapts to either KOHL Dual-mount kitchen sinks — those that can be installed either as a “drop-in” sink or be mounted under the counter — offer flexibility for those who need to get a sink now and install it later.
