Executive Updates
It is with great pride that I write this months Presidents report. Congratulations and well done to everyone who was involved in the ANZAC Portrait event. The regional chairs obviously pulled out all the stops to get this moving and the troops on the ground have made us all very proud to be members. There has never been such an undertaking by the Institute to action our members under one united event before and everyone pulled way above their weight and engaged with the public with true professionalism and genuine compassion. The public reports from around the country are full of praise for the Institutes initiative in bringing this together and for the way in which our photographers conducted themselves during the event. In its own way this event has brought us closer together as an Institute and enabled us to have pride in what we do and what we can offer the community. We will be remembered for this long into the future and the benefits will be long lasting as well. The media we have gained as a result of this event has been outstanding, with spots on several TV channels, radio stations and most national and local new papers. Thank you to Tony Stewart and Chris Trail for initiating the project, and a huge thank you to Anthony McKee for project managing all of it. To the regional chairs, we owe you all big time for your efforts, and finally to all the photographers on the ground, you have done us proud. Thank you each and every one of you.

For those that took part in the Anzac project, thanks so much. I hope you had a great day feeling the good vibe of doing something for nothing and something so constructive. As I get older somehow that whole “lest we forget “idea means more to me to respect. I know at the RSA I was allocated the older men are treated like treasures, and so they are. Each of my sitters had their own story of course and I happily gave them the time to listen. Their experiences are a world away for us but a lifetime of never forgetting for them. This whole last month has been manic for your board members, with not only the ANZAC project (thank the Lord for Anthony McKee) but also organising the upcoming Conference. With the registration brochure needing to go out soon the pressure comes on to finalise the sponsors, without whom, the show cannot go on. It struck me that because of most of our main sponsors have been so faithful and supportive over the years, it is easy to kind of think their support is a given. It is not. Nor should it be. We have to give these companies a reason to support us. As we all know our industry is a very fluid, both in how we are being asked to do business ourselves, the tech changes, but also how we can access our tools of trade. Parallel importing is the enemy of our industry suppliers, and a short sighted activity of any professional photographer who is part of the photographic family in New Zealand. Because that is what we are, a family. The suppliers are having of course reacted to this problem with many and probably soon to be all having their own on line purchasing models. Here and there members might complain about the cost of belonging to an organisation such as ours, or the cost of attending our annual conference. Imagine then the cost of each of these wonderful opportunities if there was no support from our awesome friends at these ever faithful companies. The point is, buy your needs at home in New Zealand. Support these companies who support you. They are great people whom you can call for advice, for help and just for the friendship available for you to do what you do even better. There is no one at the end of a phone if the crap hits the fan with goods brought in unsupported .Times are challenging for all and our friends need the industry’s support so that they may continue to look after us. Imagine the landscape we work in if there were no NZIPP’s, no suppliers and no information sharing. I just can’t, and don’t want to. For some reason I love the catching up, the sharing, the judging, the international speakers, the rock stars we have in our own country and feel responsible to carry the torch. For those that are smart, that realise no one person is an island, that synergy and togetherness is powerful, you are why we your board work hard to secure your future. Finally I just want to congratulate Rachel Callander on what was an immensely powerful presentation on T.V. the other night. She and her husband’s bravery in the loss of their beautiful daughter Evie, and how they have reacted, with the best possible legacy to her. Celebrating their time with Evie by giving great memories to others is so illustrative of the power we have to create meaningful legacies. Well done Rachel. Your images are stunning and you most firmly sit in my category of local “rock stars”.

Honours Council Report
A personal journey of growth and learning With the release of the 2014 Epson/NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards Call for Entries document last month, what inevitably follows is the anguish over “what am I going to enter?” While the awards and accolades have been there, it’s never really been about winning. The process of entering awards has always very much been about a personal journey, a journey where I’m constantly challenging myself, and constantly working to improve and refine what I do photographically, both technically and visually. Each and every year I agonize over my entries, wondering how I’m going to come up with ideas, finding the right subject(s), analysing and selecting the images, and then working to get the best out of each one. It is a process that allows me to learn about photography and the photographic image, and where I’m now able to see my own unique style emerging. Is the process worth it? Heck yes. Each year, as I pack my prints to send away, I see the hours of effort and hard work that has gone into them, at the same time feel very proud of what I’ve created. Do I hope some of my prints will receive an award? Heck yes, but that’s up to the judges, my peers. Win or lose, I already know I have learnt and gained so much already, because I see my work improving, year on year. The only thing that remains is to be inspired by and learn from what others have produced and repeat the process again next year. Though I’ve been alluding to my own experience, I am confident I would get the same response from any others who have ever entered awards. The learning and insight into photography that can be achieved through the process of entering the awards is not really something that can be gained by any other means. This is the reason I enter awards, and subsequently the reason Honours wants to encourage greater participation in the awards, specifically from NZIPP members. We see this as essential for benchmarking photographic standards and the profiling of professionalism in photography, within the rapidly changing face of the photographic industry. Encouraging and supporting each other to enter the Iris Awards will strengthen and improve the technical and visual skills required by professional photographers in today’s market. The icing on the cake, if you win an award, is being able to distinguish yourself from many others, as an award-winning photographer. Auckland/Northland Region Wow what a month we’ve had. It’s been all about ANZAC day. First and foremost I would like to thank everyone who has taken part in this project, and I’m sure it’s been a rewarding experience for all involved. Traditionally April is the month where we have our local AGM, and this year was no different. Over the last year or so Auckland has seen a few changes in the committee, and new people has meant new ideas, some controversial, some not so much. However at the AGM it was really great to see so many contributing and taking a real interest in the future of the Auckland region. A big part of what we are trying to achieve is to build what is already a strong professional community and give better quality content that will add real benefits to your membership. Mays meeting will be a speedlight workshop hosted by the talented Rory Laubscher at his studio. We will also be hosting the IRIS awards exhibition which will be held at the Vero Centre, Shortland St, which will run from May 28th to June 30th. The exhibition is part of the Auckland Festival of Photography. Festival Tuesday is also back this year and will be on the 3rd of June, this is a great chance to see 13 exhibitions in one night. Keep an eye out on our Facebook to join up with fellow NZIPP’s for a fun night of wine, cheese and great photography. July will see us hosting our neighbours from the Waikato / Bay of Plenty region, so make sure you make yourself available for what will be a great night.

Waikato/BOP Region So Easter has come and gone & we all ate way tooooo much chocolate ..... that’s just a fact & hopefully you got to spend some chilled out time with the family or friends. Our last months speaker Wellington photographer Mandi Lyn, was well received by our members and a great turnout by the Wintec students. The message was a clear kick in the pants -” we are capable of anything we desire” once we get rid of the bitch & hire the muse. It’s amazing how many of us needed that advice! Thanks Mandi for taking the time to come and share your experience with us. We also had some Auckland visitors, thanks to Gino & Anna Demeer and Chris Trail, looks like July will be our month to visit you guys Next months meeting in Rotorua is titled “Everything Iris”. Sean Dick from Evoke Studios will pay us a visit to talk printing & papers. Bring along your questions and printed images, it’s not like we have the winning formula, but we can give you enough tips & tricks that you might just be able to create your own. The travelling exhibition is still sitting tight at the Tauranga airport, whip down to check it out over the school holiday break if you are in the area.

Central Districts Region In late March, Jono Tucker, Wellington videographer, came to our region and spoke about his experience with DSLR film making. It was a really informative and useful presentation which was thoroughly enjoyed by all that attended. I’d like to thank Chris Hill, Kevin Bone, Tony Carter, Richard Wood, Melissa Thorburn, Lynda Forrest, Toni Larsen. Kaye Davis, Brad Boniface, Penny Aspin and Rachael Smith for being part of the ANZAC Day Project.

Regional Updates Upcoming Meetings… Canterbury/Westland Regional Meeting with speaker Belinda Canton Venue: Fox & Ferret “Round Room”, The Palms Shopping Centre, Christchurch Date: May 19th, 2014 Time: 6pm
Canterbury/Westland Region Over the last few years living in the central south island while trying to maintain a steady home life, run a business and in general keep your head on straight throughout the aftermath of one of New Zealand’s most recent natural disasters has been an incredibly stressful task. So with the arrival of the annual membership invoice in my inbox I took a moment to think about the value of my NZIPP membership. It is a really wonderful thing to be part of such a vibrant organisation such as the NZIPP. For me living a wee way out of town, the monthly NZIPP meetings are one of the things on my ‘to do’ list that I really look forward to. Never underestimate the effect a kind word from a fellow photographer can have on someone. The value of the relationships that we build as members of the NZIPP is priceless. So, thank you to all of the members across the country that have helped out Canterbury Westland members during this time. I am sure that we would all agree that we really appreciate it. So, here in Canterbury Westland we are on a roll this year, which is so exciting to be a part of! The start of this month saw the annual AGM. We were thrilled to have a record number of members in attendance. Everything was discussed in a jovial manner and we got through the nominations and votes for the committee posts and agenda in record time. We even had a cameo appearance – albeit a very small one – from the Nimmo’s over the mountains who joined us over the internet on an iPhone perched atop the television at the front of the room. The 2014-2015 Committee is shaping up to be an enthusiastic bunch with a reasonable balance of oestrogen to testosterone. We welcome Kate Christie as the new regional chair, Rebecca Watson (it’s a bit weird trying to work out how to word this bit) as the secretary, Richard Linton and Paul Daly as joint treasurers and last but not at all least Ann Worthy-Stevenson, Olivia Spencer-Bower and Clinton Lloyd as committee members. With a lot of very exciting events coming up over the next few months, discussion at the AGM was positive and members requests and suggestions have all been taken on board and the committee will be worked on them in the very near future. Now the AGM was not the only attraction at the early April Canterbury Westland meeting. We were all very privileged to have Matt Greenslade join us as guest speaker. Born and raised in Christchurch Matt moved his family half way around the world to eventually settle in New York City where he is a successful corporate marketing / editorial portrait / interior photographer. Matt claimed to be very nervous and shy about speaking to us however it transpired that when speaking about his photography his passion and enthusiasm were clear. Matt has used his classic kiwi can do attitude to help him stand out from the crowd in one of the biggest and most competitive economies on earth.

Matt has managed to remain in business throughout the largest economic downturn in the United States of America since the 1930’s. As Matt talked us through his thoroughly impressive portfolio of imagery it was clear to see how he is able to secure clients including BMW, Accenture, Thomson Reuters, Ernst & Young and IBM. His style of photography is bold, simple and sophisticated. Matt’s photography is entirely suited to the very powerful people that he is often tasked with photographing. He has perfected his ability to relate to and relax some of the most powerful members of the New York business elite in record time. It was a pleasure to hear stories from Matt about the often ridiculous hoops that you are required to jump through while working in skyscrapers in the city that never sleeps, photographing people who deal with mind boggling amounts of money on a day to day basis, and dealing with the egos of people who really are some of the wealthiest people in the western world. Thank you again Matt for your time and sharing with us an intriguing behind the scenes sneak peek of the life of a New York City photographer.

Otago/Southland Region Well done to all NZIPP - the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography volunteers who got up super early to travel to dawn services in the rain, and be part of the biggest project the NZIPP has undertaken. Special thanks to those who helped me out in Otago Southland - Dan Childs, Matthew Hawke, Nicola Wilhelmsen, Alan Dove, Moira Clark, Jen Corish, Anna Allan, Shelley Povey, Rochelle Dillon, Jackie Gay, Tina McGregor, Jackie Ranken, Mike Langford and Anthony McKee, you should all be so proud! Also big thanks to all the organisers and behind the scenes co-ordinating and support the NZIPP board gave! You guys rock. I cannot wait to see all the images and hear all the stories. Over the coming weeks we have a lot more Veterans to get to but the feel good factor has been so high that the momentum is well and truly there to accomplish this! Our April NZIPP meeting was held on the 1st April and we had the wonderful Rachel Callander from Callander Girl Photography http://www.callandergirl. co.nz/ talk to us in Queenstown, which was well attended and everyone got so much out of it! Life as a photographer“An image is a note and album is a song.” NZIPP Otago/Southland was very fortunate to have Rachael tell her story. We are all looking forward to hearing more from her at this year’s Conference. Rachael makes images that are collections of memories and experiences. Her photographs “lead her brides into the future”. She provides her couples with images that will help keep them together. The couple answer a questionnaire that helps inspire her to make the most appropriate images for them. Amongst the many take-aways and tips were these lessons: Lesson 1 - Know your craft and know your business and what you want it to look like. Prepare for greatness. Lesson 2 - Don’t be scared of not being good enough - be yourself. Lesson 3 - Ask yourself the questions: • Why are you a photographer? •
Who are your clients?
•
What is important to you?
Lesson 4 - Say no to work that doesn’t inspire you. Would you choose yourself if you were the client? Lesson 5 - You will always change and grow. Value your craft and keep learning.

Have a business plan. Work out your costs and make sure they are less than your sales. Prior to Rachel’s talk, we had a social hour with drinks and nibbles in the wonderful space The Front Room in Queenstown and all took part in a new exhibition they are holding for April, The Art of The Selfie. Their aim is to have 1000 selfies on the wall by the end of April, and our NZIPP group were amongst the first to contribute. Our next meeting is on May 6th in Queenstown and will be a night filled with image critique, some members invited to give pecha kucha style talks and share images and lots of laughs. Please email jackieranken@xtra.co.nz for details. May 10th and 11th has been confirmed for The Southland Trip away in The Catlins and there are still spaces available if you are interested. Rochelle Dillon is putting together a very hands-on overnight trip, with organised landscape, lighting and portrait shoots in beautiful locations. There will also be facilities and time for an in depth print critique and of course socialising. Industry News Copyright Clarification In the last issue of the Photographers Mail there was an article published by Clendons Barristers & Solicitors about Copyright – “Unlicensed media use of photographic works.” (Pg 38.) While the article was factually correct it was in some ways misleading by implying photographers automatically own copyright in all our images – particularly the bold printed statement: Under the Copyright Act 1994 (the “Act”) a photo is considered an “artistic work”. Anyone who wants to reproduce or publish a photo requires permission, or a licence from the copyright owner before doing so. It also goes on to say ... “Copyright exists to protect photographers to prevent unauthorised reproduction or publication of original works and copyright in a photograph attaches automatically….” This is all true… BUT…. In fact you DO NOT own copyright to your images if you have been commissioned by someone to take them! Obviously this applies to almost all professional photography assignments as you will have a client paying for your work. It is however important that you DO retain your copyright and intellectual property in all your photography. Fortunately the Act allows us to contract out of this commissioning rule through licensing our work to clients. This is all covered by the industry standard NZIPP and AIPA standard terms and conditions for both commercial assignments and consumer photography which can be downloaded from the NZIPP website here: •

If you are new to the industry you may question this…. “My client has paid for the images so why should I retain copyright.” Or “the images are of no personal interest to me and I’ve been paid for them so why would I want to retain copyright?” The thing is, your business revolves around you owning your intellectual property and the images you create are your intellectual property. They are your personal “vision”. That is the single most valuable asset of your business. So if you allow a client to own copyright and you then shoot images in a similar style for another client that original client could actually sue you for breach of copyright. And it’s your photographic “style that quite possibly got you the job in the first place. You also lose the right to use those images anywhere for your own promotion – i.e. if you publish images in a portfolio or on your website or blog and you have not retained copyright you could be sued by your own client for breach of their copyright. If you don’t own your

images to use for marketing and promotion of your vision then what business do you have? The other ridiculous thing about NZ’s copyright law as it stands is that your client owns the copyright even before you have been paid for it. The Act states it is a commission from the moment they “agree to pay for” the images. So even if you don’t get paid for the job or the client goes broke they still own copyright in the images! So be warned. As a professional photographer unless you are selling stock images or self commissioned assignments you do not automatically own copyright in your images. You can read more about this here. If you are a new photographer and not sure about any of these copyright legalities talk to one of the more experienced photographers at your next NZIPP regional meeting. The industry has fought this rule for many many years but so far to no avail. So until it changes we must protect your business by contracting out of the rule and licensing your work. (2) Where an employee makes, in the course of his or her employment, a literary, dramatic, musical, or artistic work, that person’s employer is the first owner of any copyright in the work. (3) Where— (a) A person commissions, and pays or agrees to pay for, the taking of a photograph or the making of a computer program, painting, drawing, diagram, map, chart, plan, engraving, model, sculpture, film, or sound recording; and (b) The work is made in pursuance of that commission,—that person is the first owner of any copyright in the work. Postscript: It’s worth me mentioning here that last month one of my images that I shot for a client and retained copyright in was used by a tourism organisation on their Facebook page without my permission. They did a google search for “Rotorua sunrise” and cut and pasted one of my images. So I sent them a letter and an invoice for the market value reproduction fee plus 100% penalty fee for unauthorised use plus $1 for every person that had shared it.
