Expo offers chance to find answers on effluent management

W

elcome to your 2018 Effluent Expo Official Guide. This guide is your preview to the first national Effluent Expo ever held in the country. Over two days, the Effluent Expo will feature almost every product and service available to farmers from nearly 100 reliable and experienced companies operating in the effluent management sector. The venue is the Mystery Creek Events Pavilion just beside Hamilton airport, and the dates are Tuesday, November 27, and Wednesday, November 28. It is free to attend the Expo and every farmer will receive a goodie bag of items from exhibitors and sponsors to take home. This Expo highlights the more collaborative effort showing up between companies involved in helping farmers manage effluent and meet the strengthening compliance rules that apply in each region of the country. Expo organizer Amanda Hodgson says it is a onestop event that showcases New Zealand’s effluent industry experts under one roof for two days. It has been timed to take place after the busy mating period on many of the country’s dairy farms. Apart from the opportunity for farmers to choose their own range of exhibitors to visit at their own pace during either or both days, organisers have also scheduled topical seminars on both days which are aimed at farmers with any level of knowledge on effluent management who are seeking more knowledge. These seminars are being delivered by experienced staff from DairyNZ and Fonterra. Topics for the seminars range from best management practice right through the effluent storage and system design, to calculating storage size with examples for small herds or larger options. There are also sponsored sessions from several of the exhibitors at the Expo, on more specific options or solutions for effluent management. The full schedule of seminars is set out on pages 6 and 7 of your Expo Guide. Primary Industries Minister Damien O’Connor is also attending the Expo later in the afternoon

of Tuesday, November 27, and will participate in a 30 minute Q & A session from 3.50pm through to about 4.20pm. This is your opportunity to put your questions to the Minister on any topics relating to compliance and effluent management, so come prepared for that. The Expo’s Master of Ceremonies, Marc Gascoigne, will keep everyone informed through both days of the Expo on seminar start times. There are food and coffee stalls operating on both days and doors open from 8.30am to 4pm for visiting the exhibitor sites inside and outside the Mystery Creek Pavilion. Don’t forget to bring your Expo Guide with you to the event so you can find your way around the exhibitor areas. An industry function has also been organised from 4.30pm through to 7.30pm on Tuesday for farmers and exhibitors to network, enjoy a yarn over a meal and drink, and also some great entertainment from the hilarious duo known as The Bitches’ Box. Tickets for this evening event are $45 each and must be pre-ordered via the Effluent Expo website www.effluentexpo.co.nz. Ticket holders receive a spit roast dinner, two drinks and the live entertainment show later in the evening. Full listings for every exhibitor start on pages 8 and 9 of your Guide. Check out the middle pages (26 and 27) for your site plan for the inside sites and page 28 for the outdoor sites plan. Gold partners for the 2018 Effluent Expo are Fonterra Farm Source, New Zealand Dairy Exporter, Waikato Regional Council and DairyNZ. Without these sponsors, it would not be possible to run the Expo. Thanks must also go to all the nearly 100 exhibitors who have embraced the opportunity to invest in setting up their sites to display their products and services to farmers.

Focusing on innovation

rchway Group has built an enviable reputation for leadership, innovation and total control of nutrient containment since it was founded in 2003 by husband and wife team, Matt and Amanda Hodgson. Archway Group products feature on dairy farms throughout the North Island, including weeping walls, tri-block silage bunkers, dry store bunkers with sliding roofs, and feed pads. The company covers all aspects of nutrient containment. Continually focusing on innovation, efficiency and scale means Archway is highly commended in the industry and from farmers who they work with. Matt and his team aren’t interested in the ‘hard sell’ but prefer to come away from meeting a farmer for the first time with the satisfaction that they have helped

them make the right decisions. As farms get more intensive the need for better infrastructure needs to be thought about a lot more carefully so farmers can de-risk themselves from labour, weather events, compliance and consumer pressures. ‘‘You only have one chance to get the right infrastructure in the right place – you need to think about the long term and what you think that may look like to future-proof your farm,’’ Matt says.

The key drivers to all of this are basically that there are more cows, less land and less water. So keeping these things in mind you then need to have a plan, do it properly and keep it simple. Helping farmers plan through education and collaboration and getting their system right the first time to support their farm and any potential future growth. Archway Group’s owners pride themselves on their team of hardworking good buggers, and the way that they minimise site times to reduce onfarm interruption and maximise working to weather windows even in the wetter months. It’s all about systems, organisation and awesome team work. CONTACT: www.archway.nz

Effluent management made easy

T

he Clean Green Effluent System’s simple design allows total automated effluent management at a fraction of the cost of constructing a mega pond. The patented Weeping Wall’s unique design means the solids can dry quickly without causing any blockages in the walls. The concretelined structure allows for easy removal of the dry solids once a year with a standard digger. Due to the exceptional retention of the solids (35% more than any other tested product), the green liquid separated through the wall is suitable for external yard wash. This process lowers fresh water consumption to about 20 litres/cow/ day. This reduction in fresh water usage decreases the amount of effluent

generated for distribution to pasture, to about 22 litres/cow/day. The Clean Green Effluent Patented Distribution System allows for liquid effluent to be dispersed safely every day at 0.25mm application depth. This super low application depth allows total nutrient uptake by the plant and, in turn, reduces the nitrate leaching to zero. Next to no storage is required

Staying on top with effluent

our effluent system takes time and effort to manage and with council regulations and government standards constantly changing it’s vitally important to your business that you stay on top and inside of the regulations. Not being compliant will cost you money. It’s that simple. Effluent systems range from treatment ponds to land based treatment systems where the effluent is pumped from sumps or holding ponds. Pumping from a large storage facility is often the preferred option by regional councils but no matter your situation, you need to get it right and minimise your concerns about effluent. Many farmers throughout

The effluent filter system takes the effluent, separates the solids and filters the water to drinking water standards so that it is completely clean of pathogens, viruses and odours. As a result, the water can be utilised on the farm for

any purpose without limitations as to its safety. The solids that are separated are high in fertiliser value and can be composted down in the solids bunker to be used later, on the pasture or cropping paddocks. The biggest advantage of the Forsi Effluent filter system is that it eliminates the wasted space large storage ponds create. Since its release, the company has continued to refine the effluent filtration system so it is now completely chemical-free. This is a huge advantage to farmers as the only input needed to run the system is electricity and effluent. The drive behind this streamlining in design is to make the effluent filtration system as environmentally

sustainable as possible (no chemicals added to produce clean water). The new technology has been on trial for the past eight months with huge success. The system has been used at a car wash plant, saving the owner thousands of dollars annually in chemical costs. This innovation has revolutionised the efficiency of all of Forsi’s filtration systems and can be used on all types of water, not just bore water and effluent but trade waste as well. If you have a water quality issue, whatever the size, go see the team at the Effluent Expo and have a chat, give them a call on 07 8809479 or email sales@forsi.co.nz

Clear pond. No machines? When the Browns built a new pond, their goal was simply to keep costs down. Here is their story... One crucial question Shirley and Tony Brown run a 550 cow farm out in Pirongia, Waikato. When it came time to build a new pond, the question they asked was this: how do we keep the costs down?

Machines are expensive The conventional way of managing effluent solids is to use machines: machines that separate the solids; machines that break up the solids; machines that stir the solids. As every farmer knows, such equipment very expensive. First there’s the initial cost of buying the gear. Then there’s the ongoing cost of running it. And, of course, there are the costs of maintaining the machinery.

Hill-top complications... To make use of gravity and to avoid water table pressure on the pond liner, Tony and Shirley wanted to construct their holding pond on a hill. But in planning everything out, the Brown’s foresaw several challenges: 1. Because the proposed hill site was 100M from the shed, the cost of getting electricity up to the pond to run a stirring machine would be significant. 2. The Browns were also concerned with potential repair costs in the event that a Stirring machine ripped the liner. These complications led the Browns to look for alternatives. Could crusting and effluent odour be managed without machines?

A chance meeting At the 2012 Agricultural Bio Technology conference in Rotorua, Sheryl Brown (Tony and Shirley’s daughter) met Liz Russell, the founder of EnviroSystems in the UK.

and sludge were merely the symptoms of the real problem and that the cause of pond solids were microscopic creatures living below the surface – anaerobic bacteria. These anaerobic bacteria would separate the effluent fibres and send them to the surface. Once reaching the surface, these fibres would combine to form the crust. Scientists realised that the way to beat crust bacteria was relatively simple: put counteractive bugs into the effluent pond. These corrective micro-organisms are called Aerobic Bacteria – SLURRY BUGS.

Can crust be prevented?

The Browns learned that Slurry Bugs digest effluent fibre. It’s their food. And if sufficient numbers of Slurry Bugs are in a pond eating the effluent fibre, the raw materials needed to make the crust are removed. That means no crust can develop.

Researching Slurry Bugs Because Shirley and Tony were open to biological solutions, they decided to investigate Slurry Bugs further. Over the next two years they had further talks with Liz Russell, viewed video footage of Slurry Bugs in action in UK ponds, and read independent research that drilled deeper into the biology behind it all.

pond and to dominate it with Slurry Bugs from the beginning. Their rationale: if Slurry Bugs prevent crusting, we save a lot of money and get better fertliser in the process. If Slurry Bugs fail, we’ve spent very little to discover that fact and can then proceed with a machine-based approach.

THE RESULTS After 5 months, the Brown’s effluent pond looked like this: As impressive as that was, one further question remained: had Slurry Bugs dealt with the problem of sludging on the bottom of the pond? In December 2014 that question was answered when the Browns siphoned out the effluent. The bottom was clear.

Where to from here? For Shirley and Tony, the onging task is simply to keep the Slurry Bugs dominant in their pond. They do that by adding a small amount of Slurry Bug powder into the pond every week. Easy.

arm dairy effluent is now recognised as a useful nutrient resource, capable of being recycled for land application to pasture or crops. Dairy effluent is made up of cow manure, urine and wash-down water in varying quantities depending on feed system and seasonal changes, meaning the composition of effluent is highly variable. Analysis of farm dairy effluent makes sense for multiple reasons: from a nutrient resource point of view and as a means of keeping nutrient-loading rates within regional regulatory frameworks. Test results can also support decisions regarding set-up and ongoing management of a reliable effluent system. Dairy effluents are generally grouped into three types according

to drymatter content: liquids, slurries or solids. A regular testing programme is made easy with the DIY Dairy FARM E FFLUEN T TESTIN Effluent Kit G Why Test Ef fluent? Rapt with the Hi-Tech system

I

n 2016 the Shaw family bought a fully irrigated 120-hectare dairy farm within walking distance of their home farm and bounding their 80ha run-off. The combined properties enabled the equity partnership to milk 900 cows which are moved from one property to the other in response to the weather/grass growth. Jim Shaw recalls the new farm having “everything except an effluent system. All it had was a hole in the ground requiring a contractor to come in every few weeks to empty it and irrigate on to the paddocks around the cowshed. “We needed a system which would take in a much bigger area of the farm and give us 100 days of storage. We were also mindful that – at some point in the future – we could bring our 80ha runoff into the milking platform so we needed a system

20

which would future-proof the farm.” The new Hi-Tech system, installed by Camco Dairy Services Ltd, comprises a 7.5Kw shore-based stirrer, multi controller, 25HP closecouple double impeller pump and King Cobra. “We used the new system for a month before the cows dried off, but were rapt with the way it was working,” Jim Shaw says. Farm manager, Oscar Smit, says

30ha of the farm are irrigated by the King Cobra. “I’d never used a Cobra until I came here, but now I wouldn’t use anything else. Set-up and maintenance are easy and the coverage is better than anything I’ve ever used.”

Clever thinking from Kliptank

K

liptank started building effluent tanks in 2007; in those days, dairy effluent systems were antiquated and had not been keeping pace with development in the rest of the dairy technology sector. Ten years later and Kliptank has revolutionised the effluent industry, using modern wastewater treatment processes to help farmers get the most value out of their effluent: increasing milk production, lowering farm costs and ultimately improving farm profitability. The main innovation that propelled Kliptank to be the industry leader is the Klipjet Aeration and Stirring system which uses effluent pumps to mix the tank hydraulically. Not only do Klipjets minimise sludge build-up and prevent crusting, but studies on the soil and grass irrigated by the treated effluent have

been proven to: • Increase drymatter • Improve herbage quality • Improve soil condition and health • Increase worm count • Correct soil pH • Fixate volatile nutrients in the soil • Reduce pathogens • Reduce odour • And most importantly of all – cows prefer eating the grass.

New simple, low-cost effluent spreader booms by Joskin

J

oskin, the world’s largest slurry tanker manufacturer has extended its range of effluent spreader booms with the introduction of two new models, the Pendislide Basic and Penditwist Basic. Both models are designed for the smaller slurry tankers, to help farmers and contractors meet the high demands on effluent management. The Pendislide places the effluent in lines via a spring-loaded shoe which slides along the ground amongst the grass, while the Penditwist places the effluent in lines on top of the grass. Spreader booms have an advantage over splash plate spreading as they release lower quantities of ammonia from

the effluent. Ammonia gas can cause significant damage to the environment and emits an unpleasant odour. The financial consequences of using mineral nitrogen fertilisers - intended to neutralise the impact of ammonia - are an added cost, one that is eliminated with the use of a spreader boom. Joskin’s spreading booms limit

the contact between slurry and the air by laying the slurry as close to the ground as possible, hence reducing the ammonia losses from volatilisation. The efficiency of the nitrogen is thereby significantly increased. The use of the word ‘basic’ is related to the simplicity of these booms. Both models contain high-tech features and are fully galvanised for optimal durability. The booms are designed to fit directly onto both existing Joskin tankers or adapted to fit most other makes. Joskin is imported and distributed by Origin Agroup and is available via its sales and service dealers nationwide.

Efficient effluent spreading

aramount Effluent was founded this year by Nick Wright and is the newest effluent contractor in the Waikato. But by no means is Nick inexperienced in the field. With a Bachelor of Commerce behind him, experience working in the logistics team for The Australian Wheat Board, operating various harvesting machinery in Europe and Australia; and back in Aotearoa, working as a customer manager for John Austin (agricultural contractors) and then on the dispatch team at J Swap Contractors, Nick has no shortage of skills. Paramount Effluent specialises in the use of state-of-the-art umbilical slurry systems for spreading effluent efficiently and practically. This system improves pasture and soil

quality over the long term, causes little damage to the terrain (slurry systems are operated by tractors, unlike other effluent spreaders which employ heavy tanker units that create soil compaction in paddocks) and acts as a natural fertiliser, which reduces fertiliser costs, as a result. The process is also fast, with 1.6 kilometres of hose and the capability to shift 200-300 cubic metres of effluent per hour, comfortably. The New Zealand outlook puts increased pressure on environmental sustainability while the economy calls for farmers to have increased output and higher intensification, two opposing goals Nick believes he is well-suited to approaching. Paramount Effluent is focussed on compliance with environmental regulations and utilising the nitrogen

in the effluent (or “harnessing”, as Nick puts it). Laying rather than spraying the effluent is a critical part of this process. In keeping with the low-impact approach, the umbilical slurry system causes no interruptions to animal routines on laneways. At the crux of it though, Nick wants to help his clients to grow their bottom line. He assures his clients that the umbilical slurry system is the most cost-effective option for moving effluent and always strives to provide a service that is “second to none.”

Pond liners offer cost- effective option

P

ondco specialises in delivering award-winning solutions for effluent pond construction. Pondco director Hamish Forbes says the company has developed its own technology called Centroid which halves the distance for water or gases to escape from the pond. The design also incorporates a pressure relief valve and, in the event of an earthquake, the liner is capable of stretching without tearing. Hamish says the liner system also offers farmers long life due to the centralized weight and settlement design, and efficiency because effluent flows in and escapes from one pipe. Pondco liners are installed in large panels, reducing the number of seams required. This also helps at installation time because it means that most of the pond wall can be

is proving helpful when called on by farmers wanting a total effluent management solution. “Because we provide the detailed design for the earthmoving works, taking into account factors such as the structure of the containment, we can offer a very comprehensive solution to clients from start to finish,” Hamish says. A recent project was to design and install a 16,000 cubic metre effluent containment pond on a property near Putaruru. The project was particularly testing because the farm backed on to a protected wetland and a pristine artesian-fed river running through it. CONTACT: www.pondco.co.nz or 0800 901 109

Precast tanks provide the answer

W

ith today’s environmental restraints and rising fertiliser costs, it’s becoming more important than ever to manage effluent. By using land application of effluent, farmers can build bottom line profits and with controlled application rates they can also protect the environment. Regional councils are now taking a hard line with farmers who don’t comply with their consent rules. Precast Effluent Tanks has the answer for farmers seeking a containment solution. At its Paeroa depot the company manufactures modular concrete tanks ranging in size from 47,000 litres to 400,000 litres, along with drive-in stone traps of varying sizes, weeping walls and bins to dry and

Precast owner Trevor Christensen.

drain solids after they are removed from the stone trap. These tanks are designed and constructed as prefabricated panels, then transported to site where they are lowered into the ground and assembled. The tank floor is poured on site. These tanks can be supplied to any area at a competitive price - even

the South Island - and can be used in areas with high ground water because they have a system to lock them into the ground. Because of the way the panels support each other installation is very quick. This is very helpful when there is very high ground water at the site, because it is possible to avoid long-term problems pumping ground water while working on installing the tanks. Once intalled and coupled with the correct irrigation system, application of effluent is well under control. Call our qualified and experienced team to discuss any sized job. Veterans at handling effluent

B

rian Nicholson and Allan Crouch are veterans in the dairy effluent world. With over 40 years of experience in the industry between them, and the designing of hundreds of effluent systems in New Zealand – and further abroad – under their belts, the success of their joint business (which they both own and operate by themselves) Precise DE is unsurprising. Although they’re based out of the Waikato, the business services customers nationwide. ‘For anything and everything dairy effluent’ is their slogan, and it’s not an exaggeration. At Precise DE, Nicholson and Crouch supply advice; design effluent systems suited to each specific farm they work on; supply products, from irrigation equipment to tanks; and install the equipment, regardless of where in

the country their customers are. Beyond the dairy effluent industry, Precise DE also offer flood pumps and provide specialised products including flexible tank solutions for storing water, fuel, wine and other liquids. Another name for a flexible tank is a ‘storage bladder’, which Precise DE has started selling as part of their, ever-increasing, range of products. These flexible – and therefore, easily movable, cost-competitive and fast to install – storage units are provided by an experienced French

manufacturer. Compared to the other more common effluent storage alternative, the effluent pond, storage bladders are enclosed which eliminates unwanted odours and keeps in nitrogen that would otherwise leach into the air. Increased safety is another feature. CONTACT: www.precisede.co.nz

Covers offered for Prosump system

new cover for its highly regarded Prosump effluent storage system will be showcased on the Presco Infrastructure stand at the 2018 Effluent Expo. Presco Infrastructure specialises in designing and building sustainable concrete infrastructure to manage effluent, from transfer sumps, solids bunkers, sand traps and drying pads to weeping walls and their flagship Prosump storage tanks. Marketing manager Felicia Prestidge says the addition of a cover for its Prosump tanks will help farmers, particularly in high rainfall areas, save time and money by reducing their storage requirements and needlessly storing and pumping rainwater. There are now more than 40 Prosumps around the Taranaki,

8

Waikato and Manawatu regions. “Every Prosump is designed and built to suit that particular farm’s requirements,” Felicia says. Prosumps can be configured to any size from 58,000 to eight million litres plus. The panels are made with 150mm thick high-strength reinforced concrete and sealed with a three-stage sealing process. The Prosump has been designed by a certified IPENZ engineer to suit New Zealand’s rugged weather and seismic conditions and comply with both dairy company and regional council requirements and the FDE Code of Practice. Prosumps can be installed above ground, in-ground or anywhere in between. They require zero maintenance and come with a 50-year minimum build-life guarantee. Cost for a Prosump system is

dependent on several factors, including size and site work requirements. “Our Prosumps offer great longterm value for farmers who want to do the job once and do it right when it comes to managing effluent,” she says. Presco’s two consultants are fully Effluent System Design accredited, so they have the expertise and qualifications to design a system for any farm. Presco Infrastructure was set up in 2007 and operates mainly in the Waikato, Taranaki and Manawatu regions. CONTACT: www.prescoinfrastructure.co.nz

Reliability, word of mouth, and a long term vision pays off for Sabre

A

n increasing number of farmers are putting their confidence in Sabre’s range of effluent pumps, as they pass a decade in the New Zealand effluent market. Sabre pumps have been marketed to NZ’s industrial sector under their parent brand Roto for over 30 years, and have enjoyed considerable success pumping resins, chemical slurries, heavy sludges and the like. Sabre pumps are optimised for the dairy effluent market and are assembled and tested in NZ. They are marketed by Pump & Valve Specialties, the sole NZ agent. Pump & Valve sales manager, Matt Scarlett says the brand Sabre is firmly established in the NZ

market with over 800 pumps sold to date; “frankly if they weren’t any good we would not have sold 10% of that”. Matt puts the brand’s reliability down to their simple, robust designs, the consistently high quality of components and Pump & Valves’ ethos of always selecting pumps conservatively. “At the end of the day, what counts to most people is the ‘lifetime cost’ of the pump – and with Sabre, you buy competitively.” Pump & Valve stock Sabre pumps and spares in Auckland and Christchurch and deliver nationwide. Another popular aspect of the Sabre product is the package concept. Pumps are available as a

‘bare pump unit’ i.e. Pump and drive unit mounted on a Stainless steel base, or as a ‘complete package’ which has a control box, timer, dry run sensor, pressure gauges and a lead and plug. These units are built in Pump & Valve’s Auckland facility and programmed, then tested before despatch to give the customer a complete “plug and play” option.

Rainer solves effluent separation

R

ainer Irrigation is committed, and has been for the last 25 years, to providing the best solutions for clients’ operational issues. After significant research and development, the Rainer design team have solved one of the dairy farmer’s biggest concerns – effluent separation. The award-winning Rainer Effluent Vibra screen is a pre-treatment system for dairy shed effluent that separates the solids from effluent and wash-down water, to 1mm compressible solids. This is done by utilising a stainless-steel vibrating screen, a method that has proven reliable, for decades, in many other industries. The system processes dairy shed wash-down water at a maximum rate of 15 litres per second (significantly more than many other systems). Its

solid, robust construction and small amount of moving parts provides a simple yet reliable effluent system with low running costs. The Vibra screen can be retrofitted to suit existing on-farm infrastructure to help reduce costs. The Vibra screen cemented its success this year by taking top

honours in Irrigation NZ’s Innovation awards. CONTACT: www.rainer.co.nz

Reliant Solutions - Bolted to their promise

T

wo important issues that face today’s farmers are management and containment of dairy effluent. Reliant Solutions have been tackling these issues for years, providing effluent containment solutions to our clients. Their solution is the recognised and proven Permastore bolted storage tanks. We wanted to provide New Zealand farmers with an economical effluent liner tank that was not only secure and robust but suited for the conditions. Our above-ground bolted Ecotank offers exactly that: a unique, structurally engineered tank built on, and secured to, reinforced concrete piles. This offers superior protection against adverse conditions - wind, storm and earthquakes, giving peace of mind to the owner. In general, other liner tanks on the market only rest on a sand bedding (with the

40

hope that the weight of the effluent will keep it in place). The Ecotank’s three-metre-high galvanised walls reduce the overall footprint of the tank, saving valuable land while increasing the storage volume. The Ecotank is designed and manufactured here in NZ. Understanding our changeable

climate, the tanks are made of robust materials to withstand the weather at its harshest. In fact, we are so confident about the Ecotank’s durability, we provide a 50-year engineered structural design life, and a 20-year warranty on our tank liner.

Proven record with tanks

T

anks and Silos NZ specialises in the construction of effluent tanks and industrial tanks for all applications. The Matamata, Waikato-based company’s director Paul Lowe has a proven track record in the tank effluent containment and management industry. He has constructed more than 30 of the company’s Permastore slurry tanks throughout the North Island. Paul has a wealth of experience in the dairy industry. When not constructing Permastore tanks you will find him involved in the business of building herringbone and rotary cowsheds as well as all facets of dairy farm concrete and construction. Tanks and Silos NZ can improve safety around the dairy, effluent tank and containment area with a tank

structure that sits above the ground. Its tanks are modular, bolted construction made from glass-fusedto-steel panels. This means its tanks are highly resistant to corrosion and don’t require liners or cathodic protection. Another advantage is that inlet or outlet pipes can be easily positioned correctly to maximise effluent retention. Tanks can also be fitted with a

range of covers to provide effective odour control and protection from rainwater. The modular design also allows for future extension, modification or relocation. CONTACT: www.tanksandsilos.co.nz

Nutrient capture just became easier and better

M

ost farmers prefer not to spend more than they have to on effluent storage, yet many spend 30-40% more than they need to by choosing open pond storage which simply stores a lot of rain water. Open pond storage is also one main contributor to greenhouse gasses. Closed pond storage does not contribute to the production of greenhouse gas, instead all the nitrogen stays in the system. In the EU, effluent storage systems cannot be open to air, and it is expected this requirement will eventually become reality in NZ. But, why wait? Closed pond storage has many benefits and solves many other on-farm challenges

Progressive farming enterprise seeks the best

s part of Hopkins Farming Group’s drive to keep improving the way they manage their resources on farms, upgrading the effluent storage ponds was a critical step. The need to futureproof the ponds came from consideration of factors such as: increase in cow numbers and changes in how and when effluent is applied. Using the tools provided for specifying the minimum storage volumes and then adding a buffer to the volume calculations, an engineer was engaged to ensure that the ponds are designed to the latest specifications. Resulting from a less-than-ideal experience with the first two liner installations, Viking Containment

was engaged to supply and install the liners for the next series of ponds. Viking are flexible in meeting installation timeframes, early or delayed and they supply all of the components required for the liner from the under-liner venting and protection textile through to the Geoladder safety ladders that are welded to the liner. I do enjoy reading about other farming systems and other farms doing a similar system and comparing our performance against theirs. The Dairy Exporter provides a range of different types of farming systems, which I can benchmark against.” “The information is key – there is enough detail in the articles to provide some sort of lesson. There is a lot more focus on financials, especially over the last couple of years and there have been financial lessons to be taken out of the articles.

Peter and Sarah Walters, Waikato (550 cows)

I really like the fact that the Dairy Exporter interviews and profiles such a wide range of farmers and really digs into the farm systems and looks at their profitability and relates that back to why they do what they do. I also appreciate that it covers a couple of interesting features each month - covering them from every side.”
