WOODSTOCK -Kary Haun slices into a block of clay and begins pummeling it into her work table. A row of her cups sit on a nearby ledge, glistening from a recent ride on the potter’s wheel and awaiting their fate in the studio’s 2200-degree kiln. Shaped like gradual hourglasses, they resemble the cooling towers of nuclear reactors. “That’s what my husband started calling them when i first made these shapes,” she said. “It’s amazing how many men see that. Women see more feminine forms.”

Haun, who said she loves creating these clay mugs because of their intimacy as well as functionality, is one of the artisans who will be opening up her studio and showcasing her art to visitors this month.

She said people will be able to tour their llama farm and browse the work of local artists, including llama yarn bowls made by Wilburn, homemade maple syrup by Angelica and David Myers and gourmet soap and lotions by Brenda Richie.

The O the Places We Will Show open-door tour, hosted by the O Shenandoah County Artisan Trail on April 26 and 27, will let people tour about 30 art studios, agritourism farms and other shops in Shenandoah County. Haun has served on the tourism committee organizing the event since the artisan trail’s inception in cabins and bed and breakfasts. BRUNCH Weekends and brunch just seem to go together, but who says they have to come together at a restaurant? Hosting family and friends in the comfort of your home for this ultimate weekend meal can be a breeze. BRUNCH TIPS • Take a cue from Mother Nature to establish the theme for your party. Simple bouquets of early-season blooms provide a colorful and welcoming backdrop for a casual brunch hosted indoors or out. Use vases in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors to create a sweetly whimsical look. • A buffet-style brunch makes it simple to serve your meal and it allows guests to mingle and snack as they wish, leaving you free to visit and enjoy a leisurely party, as well.

Individual Cheese & Herb Stratas

• Big taste comes in small packages. Serve your guests a plethora of smaller, bite-size appetizers which allows them to sample different flavors. Keep with your spring theme by incorporating fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Earth Day is April 22. One of the best things you can do on that day and every day is to follow the three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. Following the three Rs keeps things out of the landfill. Reduce means to use less of something, like taking shorter showers to save water or reading an online magazine to save paper. Reuse means to use something again, like refilling a shampoo bottle or using a glass jar as a vase. Recycling means to use old things to make new things, like saving all of your old aluminum cans for the recycler so they can be used to make new cans. Upcycling is a combination of recycling and reusing. Instead of setting things on the curb to be recycled, you find a better use for them. Old clothes, for example, make great pillows and quilts.

NEW KITCHEN? Splurge & Save By Tresa Erickson

Kitchen remodels can be expensive. To get the best bang for your buck today and tomorrow, you need to know where to splurge and where to save. Here are some pointers. Splurge on the stuff you don’t want to replace later. Make a list of all the items you plan to incorporate in your new kitchen and check off the ones that would be difficult and expensive to replace later. Lighting, for example, can be easily replaced—cabinets and countertops less so. These are the items to splurge on. You can save on everything else. Consider the issue of wear as well. What items in your new kitchen will be used the most? The flooring? The countertops? The cabinetry? The sink? The cooktop? Splurge on the items that will need to stand up to a lot of wear. If you bake little, you may be able to purchase a less expensive oven in favor of a more expensive cooktop. The higher the quality of the piece, the more you will pay for it, but the less likely it will break and need to be replaced. Anything that will save you money in the long run is worth paying for now. Energyefficient windows and appliances are a must in a kitchen remodel. Sure, they will cost more, but the savings over time will more than make up for the expense now. Preferences and priorities also factor into the equation. Faucets can be easily replaced, but if you can’t envision your new kitchen without the pricey one you have your heart set on, you won’t be pleased with the results. Perhaps you can have that faucet by cutting costs elsewhere on items that don’t mean as much to you—in the lighting or hardware, for example. Splurge on what matters most to you, whether that be a granite sink or a marble prep area. Most homeowners do not have limitless budgets for their kitchen remodels. Once you have a budget, sit down and determine what matters most to you and where spending more would make the most sense.

SINKS: Choices Galore one or two basins. They work well The sink is one of the most important for country kitchens. Kitchen sinks come in a variety of aspects of a kitchen. Yet few homematerials. come in many other materials, including glass, granite, marble and copper. Sinks generally come in two designs: top mount and undermount. Topmount sinks are set into a hole in the countertop, making them fairly easy to install. The rim around the sink helps hold it in place. Undermount sinks are mounted under the counter, making for a costlier, more difficult installation but easier cleaning. An undermount sink has no rim, allowing homeowners to swipe debris into it with ease. Because they have no rim, undermount sinks must be glued underneath or supported with braces. Holes must also be made in the countertop for faucets. With so many options available, choosing a kitchen sink can be difficult. Take your time, do your homework and you are sure to choose the right one for your kitchen.

Dispelling Six Common Lawn Care Myths The lawn is the backdrop to the home and essential to curb appeal. While keeping a healthy lawn may seem straightforward (mow, water, fertilize, etc.), don’t be fooled by some common lawn care myths. By Family Features

The Truth: Grass and their seeds come in many different varieties, all with various maintenance, climate and mower requirements. While some varieties require more sunlight, others may be prone to certain diseases. The type of grass and scope of land you need to mow will determine how powerful of a lawn mower you’ll need. Large lawns with thicker, tougher grass will require a mower with higher horsepower and bigger, taller wheels. Varieties of grass that have thinner blades and slower growth, or a small backyard space, can be maintained easily with a lower horsepower machine. Riding mowers like the John Deere 100 Series come in a variety of models to fit different needs. Myth #2: The shorter I cut the grass, the less often I need to mow. The Truth: For the best quality turf, only remove one-third of the grass blade with each mow. Shorter clippings break down more easily, allowing some of the natural nitrogen to return to the soil. If you cut too much at one time, the long clippings can cause stress on the grass, inhibiting healthy growth.

comes with a mulching feature on the mowing deck, to help return the clippings to the soil. Myth #4: Focus on the green. The Truth: While grass is what we see and tend to, the soil is the most essential component for a healthy growth year-round. Soil supplies the roots with necessary nutrients, which in turn yield a beautiful lawn. Consider taking a soil sample to your local university extension program or landscape supplier for soil analysis. This will help determine the best type of fertilizer to use throughout the year. Myth #5: Keep a consistent mowing pattern. The Truth: It’s easy to fall into a mowing routine, but frequently cutting grass in the same direction can mat down the turf and inhibit growth. By varying the mowing pattern, you will reduce strain on the turf and encourage a healthier, more beautiful lawn. Myth # 6: You’re off duty in the winter.

The Truth: Many people think grass “dies” off in the winter so you can take a break from lawn care; however, this is the best time to care for your equipment. Budding Gardeners While some people appear to have been born with a green thumb, others aren’t so fortunate. Gardening does not come so instinctively to them. If you are among them, do not despair. You can learn how to garden and become really good at it by following some basic tips. Learn all that you can Read up on the subject of gardening, from the basics to the fine details. Check out some books and subscribe to a few magazines. Join a gardening club or at the very least get together with a group of gardening friends. The more data you collect, the better decisions you will make in the long run and the more likely you are to have some success. Watch out for the pretty Budding gardeners too often select plants on their appearance rather than their requirements. They like the way a certain plant looks, plant it and then wonder why it doesn’t measure up later. You need plants with requirements that your garden can meet. If your garden gets a great deal of sun, then you need plants that require full sun. If your garden is in the shade much of the day, then you need plants that require shade. Be patient Gardens take time to mature. Don’t try to turn a budding garden into a mature garden with closer plantings and invasive species. While your garden might look fuller at first, it will not stay that way. Some of the plants competing for space might not survive, while others might get run over by the invasive species. Correcting

the issues won’t be easy either, as transplanting doesn’t always work and getting rid of a invasive species can be downright difficult. Compost, compost, compost! Set up a compost bin, add to it regularly and apply it every spring for a fertile garden. It will save you big time in fertilizer costs, help the environment and give your plants the extra boost they need. Creating a compost bin is not that difficult either. There are tons of how-to’s and tips online. Be realistic Again, gardens take time to mature. Don’t push yourself so hard in the beginning that you run out of steam and call it quits. Take your time, be prepared to make mistakes and don’t be afraid to ask for help. The best gardens often come out of years of trial and error. If you don’t get it right the first time, ask a buddy for some advice, and remember, there’s always next year.

If you are planting seeds, you should keep the soil moist until they sprout. You may then let the soil dry out some.
