Report of the BOARD CHAIR

Tish Emerson Chair 2009–2011 Board of Trustees

The Atheneum has experienced another year of significant growth in services and users with more than 204,000 visits in 2009–10. Nantucket’s free public library since 1900, the Atheneum continues to be the cultural heart of Nantucket all year round. Though a very difficult year financially, during which we reduced hours and froze salaries, the Atheneum was still able to offer access to a growing collection of library materials and educational programs. Many thanks to the Town of Nantucket and our generous donors for their financial support and to the staff and the executive director for their extraordinary dedication and hard work. We are all very fortunate to have this amazing resource in our midst! The celebration of our 175th anniversary was still in progress as this new reporting year began in July 2009. The August Birthday Party complete with a cake contest, hot dog stand, tent, photo ops, and hundreds of participants was a wonderful high point! Thanks go to Kathryn Kay for her leadership and to her fabulous helpers, especially Jeanne Miller! The Atheneum Dance Festival was also a huge success bringing world class dancers to Nantucket again for a weekend of extraordinary performances and related events. Marcia Welch, Marion Martin, and Jane Tyler and a great committee made all this possible. What a gift to us all! Thanks are also due to Steve Anderson and Alan Forster who led our annual giving and finance activities respectively. Without strong leadership in both areas, the Atheneum could not thrive. Another important effort this year, led by Judy Opatrny, was a review of our look and our communications. As you will soon see, we have a new logo and tag line and will be launching a new web site in November 2010. The Geschke lectures, made possible by the generosity of Nan and Chuck Geschke, the LVA program, led by Tharon Dunn, a project to make the Atheneum greener, led by Ron Winters, and many other activities marked a very good year for the Atheneum. The volunteer efforts of Atheneum board members are a major factor in keeping the Atheneum strong. Each year Annual Report

the annual meeting is a bittersweet occasion when we rotate members on and off the board. This year bid farewell to Marie Field, Lucille Jordan, Emmy Kilvert, Marion Martin, Ann Oliver, and Dusty Rhodes. Their service to the Atheneum was a great gift and will leave a lasting impact. We also welcomed new board members Susan Boardman, Barbara Fife, Jay Wilson, Bill Spears, and Ann Phaneuf and look forward to the energy and ideas they will bring to the Atheneum. Thanks to the strong and creative leadership of Molly Anderson, our Executive Director, and the staff and volunteers who work so tirelessly to make the Atheneum hum, the Atheneum succeeds in enriching island life yearround. Thank you everyone! Tish Emerson Chair, Board of Trustees

Report of the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR During the difficult economic times faced by our island during Fiscal Year 2009–10, the Nantucket Atheneum stepped up to meet our community’s need for first-rate public library services and at the same time to manage our resources judiciously through careful cost containment. Throughout the year, the Nantucket Atheneum enriched the lives of many year-round and seasonal residents. More than 204,000 visitors streamed through the doors of the Atheneum which represents an increase of 42% over the prior year. Adults, teens and children checked out more than 173,000 books and media, while more than 8,000 people searched for information by using our reference books and on-line resources. Through its 800 + programs for adults, teens and children, the Atheneum reached out with education and culture to more than 24,000 audience members. The Atheneum provided much needed public meeting space for government, civic and community organizations 800+ times this year.

Molly Anderson Executive Director

The Board of Trustees and the Atheneum staff worked diligently to advance the three goals of our Strategic Plan during the plan’s first year of implementation. The staff maintained the quality of the Nantucket Atheneum’s services and programs within the limits of its financial resources. Members of the Board of Trustees began a fundraising effort to strengthen the Nantucket Atheneum’s financial resources in order to maintain our historic building and grounds. The Communications Committee of the Board of Trustees guided by Trustee Judy Opatrny focused on developing the Atheneum’s new logo, tagline and website, all designed to increase Nantucket’s knowledge of the Atheneum’s role in the community and its financial resources. TM

Our major fundraiser, the Nantucket Atheneum Dance Festival, was a resounding success in its third year with outstanding attendance at both performances featuring world-class dancers under the brilliant artistic direction of Benjamin Millepied. The tireless work of Co-Chairs Marion Martin, Jane Tyler and Marcia Welch and their committee resulted in much needed funding for the Atheneum’s annual operations. Annual Report

The Atheneum was blessed with an outstanding Board of Trustees which with the leadership of Tish Emerson brought skills, wisdom and resources to the stewardship of the Atheneum. In addition, our dedicated Atheneum staff, energetic volunteers, and generous sponsors and donors ensured that the Nantucket Atheneum enriched the lives of so many on Nantucket. Thank you all. We revamped the display area on the first floor to better inform our patrons on what’s happening at the Atheneum and to provide ideas for good reads. In addition, our knowledgeable staff gave personal assistance to our patrons by recommending a good book, a great movie, the latest music or a perfect audio book. As more and more patrons were drawn to our downloadable books and music our staff continually offered tech support to facilitate the use of this new service.

Public Use • Library visitors: 204,833 • Total library card holders: 19,149; Nantucket card holders: 7,432

Our community out-reach efforts included the “Food for Fines” program which offered amnesty for overdue fines in exchange for food donations to the Food Pantry, participation in the Senior Expo and County Fair and weekly delivery of books and media to home-bound residents.

• Items borrowed: 173,955 • Reference transactions:8,074 • Use of internet: 310 users per week of the 16 public computers • Hours open: 43.5 hrs. per week

Our ability to provide quality service was greatly enhanced by the outstanding work of our dedicated group of volunteers, who contributed their time and talent to shelving, processing materials, book sales and program events. Ellie Coffin Head of Circulation and Technical Services

REFERENCE/INFORMATION SERVICES With the increase in number of visitors to the Atheneum during Fiscal Year 2009–10 there was a continual demand for reference services in the Great Hall. Throughout the year the Reference Department staff guided patrons to library resources both online and in print. To ensure that these resources were current and accessible the staff obtained, catalogued, processed and organized a wide spectrum of resources including town records, newspaper clippings, Nantucket related books, letters and manuscript collections, ship’s logs, Massachusetts records, and island newspapers. In addition, the Reference staff assisted patrons in obtaining interlibrary loan materials from state and national libraries. This year interlibrary loans increased by 17%. During this year, the Reference staff helped approximately 300 computer users each week and answered on average 150 weekly requests for information assistance. In addition to in-person requests, the Reference Department assisted library patrons over the phone and by e-mail in their searches for information. To better serve the public, the Great Hall computers were updated with a new configuration of eight multi-user computers featuring easyto-read screens and full sized keyboards. In support of one of the Atheneum’s core principles to support lifelong learning, the Reference staff provided free test proctoring services for Nantucket students. This year, the number of proctored exams doubled, thereby allowing more students to complete course work at the following institutions Art Institute of California, Bellevue University, Brigham Young University, Cape Cod Community College, Gulf Coast Community College, Oakton Community College, Oregon State, Pennsylvania State University, Thomas Edison State College, University of Delaware, and Western Governors University. ADULT PROGRAMS Throughout the Fiscal Year 2009–10, the Atheneum delivered a broad spectrum of educational and cultural programs for year-round and seasonal residents of the island. The more than 270 programs which included author talks, lectures, films, book discussions, musical and theatrical performances attracted more than 12,000 people. During the summer of 2009, our annual Geschke Lecture Series featured four presenters who addressed the theme: “The Road Ahead.” The speakers were: Pulitzer Prize winner and Presidential biographer Doris Kearns Goodwin; educator, journalist and commentator David Gergen; CBS News journalist Leslie Stahl; and Carnegie Corporation president Vartan Gregorian. Proceeds from the Geschke Lecture Series supported the department and provided the means for free programming all year long.

Vigorous and constant review of our collections, accompanied by regular monthly materials ordering, kept our collections fresh and exciting for all children, teens, parents and caregivers this year. In addition, our staff assisted individual patrons and classes of students, while offering many programs to the public. For the year 2009–2010, the Atheneum hosted 512 programs for children, with 10,242 in attendance, and 101 teen programs, with 1,103 participants. A number of these programs involved collaborations with other island institutions. For example, our 2009 Summer Reading Program theme was, “Starship Adventure @ your library,” which prompted collaboration with the Maria Mitchell Association and with the NASA Lunar/Meteorite Loan

Other Weezie Library summer programs, such as story times, Cosmic Creations (science/art), music programs, creative movement, and garden concerts continued with the support of the Nantucket Golf Club Foundation. These favorites were joined by the new offering, “Read to a Buddy,” with Mattilda, a trained R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs) dog, and her owner Stephanie Cooper-Greenberg. This program offered young readers ages 6–9 years the opportunity to read for 20 minutes to Mattilda, who was an encouraging and non-judgmental listener. “Read to a Buddy” continued into the early fall, while regular weekly library programs and outreach to area preschools and after-school programs resumed. On “Outreach Day” each week, Weezie Librarian Maggie Sullivan visited with fourteen groups of children and their teachers in a bi-weekly rotation. For many youngsters, these programs established their first connection to the public library. Teen programs increased in number and diversity this year, as craft programs and a weekly “Teen Café” in the gallery were added. While collaborations between the Weezie Library and island schools continued as in years past, joint efforts with Nantucket High School increased. Freshmen students enjoyed Seaside Shakespeare’s performance of “Romeo and Juliet” in the fall, accompanied by actor visits to English classes. In addition, poet Nicole Terez visited NHS during April, National Poetry Month, to share her poetry with all high school students. In both cases, public programs were also offered at the Atheneum as part of the collaboration. Maggie Sullivan Head of Children’s and Young Adult Services Annual Report

DEVELOPMENT During Fiscal Year 2009–10, the 2010 Membership Campaign which ran from July 2009 through June 2010 more than met its goal of $446,000 by raising a record $458,569. The Eighth Annual Cold Turkey Plunge held on November 26, 2009 resulted in a record number of 350 people taking the plunge and $53,000 were raised in support of programs and services for the Weezie Library for Children. The annual summer book sale held over the July 4th weekend included more than 5,000 books under a tent in the garden. With the help of 14 volunteers the Atheneum raised over $2,000. During Stroll 2009 and Daffodil 2010 weekends, the library also ran smaller, one-day, book sales in the Lower Gallery and collected an additional $2,500. Remaining books from the sale were distributed to island and off-island charities. All proceeds from the three sales were used to fund Atheneum programs and services. The Nantucket Atheneum Dance Festival was held in the Nantucket High School Auditorium for the third year with two performances on July 30 and 31, 2010. Stars from the internationally acclaimed New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theatre returned to the stage in works choreographed by Jerome Robbins, George Balanchine, Kenneth MacMillan and Christopher Wheeldon under the artistic direction of Benjamin Millepied. In addition to the performances on Friday and Saturday nights, there was a series of dance-related events during the week, including master classes for dance students, company classes, dress rehearsal, lecture/demonstration, and, for the first time, a special program for young children. The proceeds from the Dance Festival helped to fund the Atheneum’s operating budget. Bess Clarke Head of Development

Report of the TREASURER

In Fiscal Year 2009–10 the Atheneum provided a broad array of library services to the community. As the accompanying Statements of Activity and Financial Position clearly illustrate, financial support from the Town of Nantucket and from many generous donors was crucial for the provision of these services. The Town’s funding, which covered about one third of the operating budget, was of singular importance since it enabled the Atheneum to maintain its accreditation, thereby ensuring full access to books and other materials from off island. Funding from year round and summer residents covered the remaining two thirds of the budget and was crucial for maintaining the Atheneum’s iconic building, for supporting library services and programs for children, teens, adults and seniors, and for ensuring the availability of the Atheneum’s indoor and outdoor facilities to the community. With this financial support, in concert with some belt tightening, the Atheneum weathered 2010 well and ended the year in good financial condition. However, we expect the current challenges to continue into 2011. And, to meet them, we must again rely on the support of the Town, the generosity of our year round and summer supporters and, of course, prudent financial management. Without it, the Atheneum faces the possibility of losing its accreditation as well as having to make further cuts in services and programs at a time when they are needed more than ever. Alan M.
