TRAVEL FILM

Beyond the Stacks: Each month we will feature a different library database, or other on-line resource. These information treasures are not free on the Internet, but are free if you go through Northland’s website and use your library card. Wouldn’t it be great if Northland notified you with lists and reviews of new books, audiobooks, DVDs, or music CDs that we’ve just purchased? If you sign up for New Book Alerts, you will receive a weekly update on our just-received titles. New Book Alerts includes cover art, descriptions of the book, author information, popularity ratings, first chapter previews, and patron reviews. New Book Alerts showcases titles that you are interested in. When you click “check catalog,” it goes straight to our catalog so you may place a hold on the item right away. A companion service is Author Check. Author Check allows you to create a list of your favorite authors. When Northland purchases a new title by one of the authors on your list, you will receive an email notification with a link to the catalog so that you can place a hold immediately. Each author entry has a biography, photograph, author tweets, and popularity ratings. Even if you’re not quite ready to sign up for the email notifications, you should take a look at these new features. They are very attractive and user-friendly, with author photographs, cover art, suggestions for what to read next, and authors ranked by popularity. Just go to our website at www.northlandlibrary.org and click on one of the icons (pictured in this article) at the bottom of our webpage.

STRESS AND OUR BRAINS

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is conducting research on the effects of stress on the aging brain. Do stress and late-life depression cause irreversible changes in the brain? Do exercise and problem-solving skills improve our brain function and help to keep our brains healthy? On Thursday, July 10, at 10 a.m., Dr. Meryl Butters of UPMC will present an informative program on this important subject. After her presentation, brief screenings will be available for those who are interested in the study. Those who are eligible and wish to participate in further screenings will be compensated for their time. continued

Join us on Wednesday, July 16 at 2 p.m. as we travel locally to McConnell Mills State Park and Chesapeake & Ohio Canal in Maryland. At McConnells Mill we’ll view a 400 ft. gorge, kayak down Slippery Rock Creek and hike the trails. We’ll tour the interesting limestone formations, go rock climbing and see the grist mill in action. We will then continue on to Maryland where we take a bicycle ride along the canal. There are breathtaking views of Mather Gorge, the Great Falls, Fort Frederick, and Antietam Creek. We will tour the cities of Hancock, Cumberland and Harper’s Ferry and travel along the Appalachian Trail. No reservations required. Refreshments will be served.

FOREIGN FILM

Join us on Wednesday, July 9 at 1:30 p.m. for a drama from France called The Past. An Iranian man named Ahmad returns to Paris to finalize his divorce. During his stay, his wife asks him to check in on their eldest daughter Lucie. What starts as a simple family matter becomes more complex as Ahmad discovers various layers of the truth. The Past is about people who wish they could erase what came before and just live in the now. The film is by the director of the Academy Award winning foreign film, The Separation. The Past has won 11 awards and was nominated for 18 others. Refreshments will be served. No registration required.

WOMEN’S VINTAGE CLOTHING: A FASHION SHOW FOR THE AGES

Over four decades, from the Victorian Era, through World War I to the Flapper and Jazz Age of the 1920’s and into the economic hardships of the 1930’s, women’s fashions changed dramatically. But women’s roles and women’s activities changed even more dramatically! Jean Kanouff, retired librarian and collector of vintage clothing, presents a fashion parade with volunteers who will model the typical dress of each of the decades to highlight what women were doing, what styles they wore and the roles they played during each of the time periods. If you love Downton Abbey, and you’ve enjoyed seeing the changing fashions portrayed in the series then you’ll also enjoy this informative program that highlights women’s history from the 1900’s through the ‘30’s. Jean’s commentary will help all of us learn more about the lives of our foremothers and grandmothers. If you have some vintage clothing or accessories from those years, bring those items along for others’ enjoyment. Come join us on Monday, July 28 at 7 p.m.

INDIAN COOKING CLASSES RETURN!

Our favorite Indian cook, Ann Manchella returns on Thursday evening, July 24 at 7 p.m. to teach the preparation of Lemon Rice, a refreshing summer dish that is popular in South India. After her presentation, there will be tasty samples for all who attend.

BIRDS OF WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA

Doris Dumrauf has combined her love of nature, especially birds, and her love of photography to become an expert on the birds of Western Pennsylvania. She has turned her backyard into a haven for birds who have become willing photo subjects as well. Over 400 bird species have been recorded in Pennsylvania, making our state an ideal location to observe our feathered friends. Many people recognize the most common birds who visit their yards in the warm weather and wish they could name some of the other varieties they see and hear each day. Many of us wish we could attract certain birds to our yard to enjoy their beauty and their songs. What are the habits of these birds? What foods do they prefer and what are their personalities? Join us on Thursday evening, August 7 at 7 p.m. as Doris shares her knowledge of these wonderful creatures of nature through her stunning, award-winning photography. She is a graduate of the New York Institute of Photography and is a regular contributor to Pennsylvania Magazine. You will learn to identify many of your backyard visitors and may also learn how to make your yard a welcome site for some of these beautiful birds.

TUESDAY NIGHT BOOK DISCUSSION

On July 1 at 7 p.m., the Tuesday Night Book Group will discuss The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder by Charles Graeber. He was also implicated in the deaths of as many as 300 patients. Join us as we discuss the dark forces that led to his crimes, and the dogged investigation that led to his capture. Our selection for August is David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants by Malcolm Gladwell.
