WELCOME TO PENINSULA STATE PARK On behalf of the Wisconsin State Park System, I would like to welcome you to Peninsula State Park, one of Wisconsin’s most complete state parks and a favorite camping destination. Peninsula State Park draws over a million visitors annually from all around the world and is one of the many jewels of Door County. With four hundred sixty-eight campsites, three group campsites, lighthouse, outdoor theater, golf course, nature center, swimming beach, biking and hiking trails, onehundred fifty-foot bluffs and eight miles of lake Michigan shoreline, you are sure to find many recreational opportunities. Please be sure to check out an amazing sunset from Weborg Point or Sven’s Bluff, one of my personal favorites. This year, as Northern Sky Theater embarks on a new season, it will continue to be one of the park’s main attractions, creating family experiences under the stars. We encourage you to share this amazing experience with your friends and family by inviting them to a performance they will never forget. Share our traditions and make new memories at Peninsula State Park with our partner Northern Sky. Campers and park visitors can look forward to two new performances, Boxcar and Dairy Heirs, as well as enjoying the familiar favorite Lumberjacks in Love. I expect you will be amazed at the many natural wonders that are around every corner. As we raise the curtain on the 2018 season, remember to explore, enjoy and be a part of the experience. Enjoy the show! Brian Markowski Superintendent Peninsula State Park

Northern Sky Theater

WELCOME TO NORTHERN SKY THEATER Welcome to another season beneath the northern sky. Our 2018 lineup is once again packed with original musicals, celebrating the human condition and reflecting our rich culture. Both Boxcar and Dairy Heirs are world premieres, marking only the second time we’ve taken on the challenge of doing two new book musicals in a summer season. Our third offering is Lumberjacks in Love—with a twist. We’re inviting you to join in and sing along with the burly boys from Hayward. Lyric sheets provided! We are also bringing Muskie Love indoors for the first time, for our fall season at the Door Community Auditorium. Last year, we announced the beginning of the public phase of our Constellation Campaign to raise funds for our new creative campus, which will include administrative offices, production building, storage, and a 250-seat theater. The campaign got off to a great start, and we recently broke ground at the building site at the corner of County Roads A and F. We anticipate a ribbon cutting some time in the summer of 2019. Rest assured, our summer home will still be in Peninsula State Park. We have already started upgrades to our wonderful outdoor venue as part of the campaign, including a new state-of-the-art sound system, just installed this spring. We are still very much in the process of raising the remaining amount of money needed to close out the campaign. With your help, Northern Sky will continue to provide a unique theater-going experience unlike any other in the country, with shows written specifically for you, our Door County audience. We hope your enjoyment of a Northern Sky production will leave you feeling inspired—to give, to come back, to spread the word about the magic beneath the northern sky. Thanks for coming and enjoy the show!

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD We all have a story. Multiple stories, in fact. Stories that we share with family when we are together. Many of these stories cross generations. They strengthen the bonds between us as we laugh or cry. We share stories with friends, good times we’ve shared and difficult events in our lives when we have supported one another with love and caring. Northern Sky Theater is proud to present four different stories this year. These stories are told with love, laughter, and song, all the while being rooted in the human condition. At the same time, the organization continues to enlarge its own story, presenting these stories while also taking on our most ambitious project, building our new creative center. Thank you for being a part of our story and for having Northern Sky Theater be in yours. Thank you, Mary Seeberg

Launching into this project, it was fun to research trains, train travel and the quirky, romanticized version of the hobo culture that followed train lines into every nook and cranny of our nation. But a closer look revealed the danger the hobos faced on the road, the risks they took every time they flipped a freight, and the code of conduct they maintained that helped to foster the safety and security they so dearly needed as they went through life without the basic necessities we take for granted. This story was sparked by an extraordinary experience composer James Valcq’s father had as a child, one that inspired our character Charlie. He loved to watch the Chicago and North Western trains pass, and one day threw a stick at some hobos who were riding the rails in an open boxcar, intending to scare them off. In return, one of the men threw something back—a piece of folk art whittled out of wood, which left quite an impression on him and changed his mind about who these “bad men” were. More characters were inspired by my husband Jon’s grandfather, a pillar of the community in his small Wisconsin town who lost a bank in the Depression, and his wife, a “kind lady” who kept a garden frequented by hobos who camped in the hobo jungle on the edge of their property during the Depression years. The world of our play is one in which the sound of the train is a constant, bringing both comforting regularity and a beckoning from the unknown, at once familiar and mysterious. To our modern ears, the sound of the train whistle and the chug, chug, chug of a steam engine may represent romantic notions of a long-forgotten era. But in our minds, the trains and telegraph lines represent the same urge for connectivity that we experience with our smart phones and air travel today—the technology may have changed, but the need to connect is the same. One thing I know: right now as a nation we’re faced with plenty of questions about who we can trust, how we can help people, and even whether we should be doing so. With this play, James and I resoundingly say “yes”—choose kindness, choose connectivity, and remember that we’re all one step away from living in that jungle.

Northern Sky Theater

DOUG MANCHESKI Performer Doug has acted with Northern Sky Theater for several years (like a couple of decades!). His favorite shows include Fishing for the Moon, The Bachelors, Lumberjacks in Love and many more. He just completed a run of Gray’s Anatomy at Third Avenue Playhouse, and a winter tour of Guys on Ice, in the role of Marvin, the comical ice fisherman he has performed well over a thousand times. Catch him again as Marvin this holiday season at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison. He is a graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and is proud to say he studied with Paul Sills and Mike Nichols for several years.

BENJAMIN MARTIN Performer Ben hails from nearby Jacksonport and loves living in Door County. He began offering official performances just minutes after his dad put a cigar-box guitar into his three-year old hands. After a short stint doing Raffi covers, Ben took a keen interest in theater and storytelling and has wanted to make audiences laugh and cry ever since. When not rehearsing lines or lyrics, Ben loves to hang out with his brother Silas, spend time with friends, practice karate forms, and read. He most recently performed in Sevastopol School’s production of Big Fish and is elated to be surrounded by the Northern Sky Theater family as he makes his professional theater debut. Special thanks to everyone that has encouraged and supported Ben in his theater pursuits and to anyone in the audience that roots for the Minnesota Vikings!

NADJA SIMMONDS Performer / Production Intern Nadja is a recent graduate of Marquette University, with a double major in theatre arts and digital media and a Spanish minor. Past theatre credits include Alex in On the Verge, Terry in Working! A Musical, and Pilot in Grounded. She has also worked with Milwaukee Chamber Theatre’s Young Playwrite Festival. Nadja spent last summer performing Shakespeare with the Summit Players Theatre, and is excited to join the Northern Sky family in Door County this summer! NorthernSkyTheater.com

LACHRISA GRANDBERRY Performer Lachrisa is delighted to make her Northern Sky debut with the cast of Dairy Heirs. She’s a Milwaukee native, living her dream as a professional actress and teaching artist. Her credits include Womyn 1 in Lines with Theatre Lila, Sadie in Exit Strategy with Forward Theatre, Mrs. Greer/Ensemble in Annie at Skylight Music Theatre, Gloria in Madagascar the Musical at Children’s Theater Madison, Zed/Ensemble in Black Nativity with Black Arts MKE, Grouchy Typing Lady in Junie B. Jones, Cleopatra Johnson in Welcome to Bronzeville at First Stage, Motormouth Maybelle in Hairspray at Concordia University Wisconsin, amongst others. Lachrisa is an alumna of Wisconsin Lutheran College. She give thanks to God, her family, friends, and Paonessa Talent Agency for their continued love and support. DAIRY HEIRS Script Excerpts Rita:

Northern Sky Theater

A Note from the Author of Dairy Heirs Book by Eva Nimmer & Joel Kopischke Music by Alissa Rhode Lyrics & Story by Joel Kopischke Northern Sky Theater has long been almost home for me. In the 1980s I turned down a summer job with Heritage Ensemble. Soon after, Milwaukee friends (Jeff Herbst, Suzanne Graff, James Valcq) were working with AFT. Later, I got to know Doc and Fred and others as I watched over 20 original musicals come to life here. And in 2001, I was humbled and honored to perform in the concert performance of The Spitfire Grill. That summer I had an idea for a show about a family farm where the father has passed away, leaving a brother and sister to sort things out while also gathering on a porch with friends singing songs and telling jokes. Along Dairy Heirs’ 17-year journey, the story hasn’t really changed much, but been immeasurably enriched by Alissa, Eva, Molly, Jeff, everyone at Northern Sky Theater, and many others who contributed time, talent, ideas, and support. This summer you’ll get to meet siblings Gabe and Elsie, their kindhearted neighbor Linda, quirky farmhand twins TJ and JT, one extraordinary cow, and maybe a few surprises. Our story tries to reflect my favorite experiences with Northern Sky—sitting around a campfire singing songs, making jokes, spinning tales, and sharing our lives’ highs and lows. It shares a few Fred Alley inspirations—characters dealing with mortality, some corny jokes (old and new), and a tenderhearted story beneath the goofy fun. I hope our story resonates with everyone—young and old, rural and city folk (like me), and even the lactose-intolerant. Dairy Heirs is about the heroes of America’s Dairyland, especially women farmers. It’s also about how important it is to keep music in our hearts, share a laugh, and find what family and home mean to us. I first performed on stage almost 50 years ago and throughout my entire life, theatre has felt like home. And now, finally, this theatre truly is home. I can’t wait to join you sitting under the Northern Sky this summer. There’s no place that I’d rather be.

“Room enough to grow beneath the northern sky…”

From Northern Lights, lyrics by Fred Alley

Last year, we embarked on the public phase of our

Constellation Campaign with the hope of breaking ground on our Northern Sky campus in the spring of 2018. The response has been tremendous. We hit all of our benchmark goals over the winter, allowing us to begin work this spring on the production and storage facility that will be part of the two-building campus located at the corner of County Highways A & F. The second building, the creative center, will house our administrative offices and a 250-seat theater. We’’’ re planning to open the theater with a premiere show for the 2019 fall season.

38

Northern Sky Theater

The success of the campaign is highly encouraging,

of course, but we have not crossed the finish line yet. We still need to raise a significant amount of money to complete everything we are determined to accomplish, including much-needed upgrades at the park. While the creative campus will allow us to the home consolidate many of our operations under one roof and give us a yearround presence, we will continue www.NORTHERNSKYTHEATER.com to perform our summer season in Peninsula State Park. We’ve had a remarkable 48-year partnership with the Wisconsin State Park system and that’s going to continue. In 2016, Northern Sky and the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources renewed this partnership for fifteen years, effectively securing our home in the park for the next generation of theatergoers.

“What’s fun is bringing my granddaughter and my daughter. We’ve had generations of family members that have joined us.” Sandra Rowley & family NorthernSkyTheater.com

39

Improving our summer home is an integral component of the long-range vision of the company. Since building our new stage and adding dressing rooms and path lighting in 2001, we’ve done everything we can to make further needed improvements. We’ve added small enhancements, like our exit road and fire ring. But many of our interim solutions to various problems have surpassed their life expectancy.

With a few strategic tweaks and renovations, we can make some dramatic improvements to the overall Northern Sky experience that will impact the quality of your visit without changing what you love most about our theater under the stars. We know that your Northern Sky summer memories are special not only because of the shows that we perform but also because of the beautiful place where we are privileged to perform them. Northern Sky Amphitheater Enhancements • Technical booth rebuild with new center lighting grid

• Additional backstage storage units

• Dressing room renovation & expansion • Sound system improvements

• New public restrooms • Improved seating comfort

• Renovated patron staircase entry area • Parking lot improvements

• New merchandise & concessions facilities • Two new patron shelter areas

40

Northern Sky Theater

Your continued belief in what we do at Northern Sky

is the key component to the success of the Constellation Campaign. We are now at a critical moment in our development. The new campus and the improvements at the park will strengthen each other, ensuring longterm sustainability and making our future more promising than ever. In making your gift to our campaign, we ask that you consider the contribution Northern Sky Theater has made to the Door County community, to the art form of creating original musicals, and to the magic that we’ve brought you and your family over the years. Let’s keep the stars shining at Northern Sky for generations to come.

Enhancing the Northern Sky Experience • New public restrooms • Improved seating comfort • New merchandise & concessions facilities, including two new patron shelter areas • Technical booth rebuild with new center lighting grid • Sound system upgrade • Dressing room renovation & expansion • Additional backstage storage units • Renovated patron staircase entry area • Parking lot improvements

A Note from the Author of Lumberjacks in Love Book & Lyrics by Fred Alley Music by James Kaplan Story by Fred Alley & James Kaplan Lumberjacks in Love is a must-see for any Northern Sky/AFT fan. Four burly lumberjacks live in a state of manly bliss at the Haywire lumber camp in Northern Wisconsin – until an encounter with a plucky mail order bride upends life as they know it. The result is big belly laughs and memorable music. Lumberjacks is one of Northern Sky’s all-time box office hits and celebrates a world where bath time is once a month and the blast of a dinner bell brings the boys running. It was 21 years ago that the burly boys from Haywire lumber camp first stomped and romped on the old AFT stage. Since then, the boys have returned to “camp” in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2015, 2016 and 2017, and still we receive more requests for Lumberjacks in Love than for any other Northern Sky show. – James Kaplan

DAVID HUDSON Playwright / Lyricist Dave (member, ASCAP, The Dramatists Guild) is proud and a little bit amazed that he and Paul Libman have written eight musicals for Northern Sky. He and Paul are two-time winners of the Richard Rodgers Award and their work has been featured at festivals across the country. Dave is the proud father of three amazingly creative kids, Connor, Garen, and Paige. He is also lucky enough to have a great partner in his amazing wife, Gigi, who is a theatre director and artist in the Chicago area. This year Dave launched Marengo Publishing where you can find his youth plays as well as some of the shows from Northern Sky. If you know a theatre or school looking for fun musicals, send them over to marengopublishing.com.

PAUL LIBMAN Composer Musical theatre is Paul Libman’s destination on a journey that began with playing jazz piano, composing for television and radio commercials and producing records. After winning the Richard Rodgers Award twice for two different musicals with collaborator Dave Hudson, Paul relocated to New York, where he currently is a member of the Lehman Engel BMI Advanced Musical Theatre Workshop. He is also the creator, arranger and producer of the hit comedy CD, Oy to the World! A Klezmer Christmas. Now, having had eight successfully produced musicals, he continues to write with Dave Hudson and others. This year, Paul is especially excited about the return to the Northern Sky stage of Dave’s and his first musical, Muskie Love.

A Note from the Author of Muskie Love Book & Lyrics by Dave Hudson Music by Paul Libman It was 2002 when I was fortunate enough to get connected with Paul Libman and we were soon off and running. Chemistry is a hard thing to find in a writing partnership, but we found it right away. We bashed out the first draft of Muskie Love and took it to our theatre workshop in Chicago. The electricity in the room when we read the first draft was palpable and we knew that we had stumbled on a good formula in terms of collaboration. Then the work really began with workshops, readings, new songs, and finally rehearsals. At the time, Northern Sky Theater (then AFT) still started spring rehearsals at Björklunden. I remember the late nights in my assigned dorm room, struggling with lyrics and frantically trying to fix the last part of the show. In that week, we wrote ‘Not Finished Yet’, replacing an incredibly beautiful song that director Pam Kriger argued (correctly) just didn’t work in the moment. I also remember the thrill of finding the lyric ‘I would fight to love you, and love to fight you’ which was the perfect description of Ben and Bea’s relationship and how it needed to move forward. As for Muskie Love, I think it is fascinating to see how the original story of Much Ado About Nothing resonates today. Whereas Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew feels increasingly dated and sexist, Much Ado’s acknowledgement of the difference between the sexes and the battle against stereotypes feels even fresher today than it did in 2004 when our show premiered in Door County. Lastly, I want to touch on DNR Doug. Along with Nina in Main-Travelled Roads, DNR Doug is one of my favorite discoveries in the writing process. In Much Ado, there is a constable named Dogberry, who is full of malapropisms and humor. Knowing that we needed to compress the number of characters, it was a thrill to create DNR Doug who was both the constable and the romantic rival. We were lucky enough to have Lee Becker originate the role and I still remember the laughter rolling through the audience every time Lee appeared on stage. DNR Doug is still one of my favorite characters, and it is thanks to Lee for helping shape that role. – Dave Hudson

Volunteers of Northern Sky Theater Do you love theatre? Do you love the outdoors? Do you enjoy sharing that experience with others? If your answers are “yes!” then we have the perfect opportunity for you! Northern Sky offers many different ways to get involved with the theatre experience – ushering, selling concessions, guiding parking and assisting our disabled guests, as well as assisting with special events. Volunteers can choose what job they would like to do and their hours – no matter what you enjoy doing and when you enjoy doing it, there is a task for everyone. If this sounds interesting, we’d love to hear from you. No experience is necessary – just a willingness to help and a desire to be part of something original in Door County. Please call Ann Birnschein, Volunteer Coordinator, at (920) 854-6117 ext. 104 or e-mail volunteer@northernskytheater.com. We proudly present our 2017 volunteers... If cancelled, and the show is less than half over, you will have the option of a mail-in refund coupon or a rain check ticket, which is good for any future summer performance without expiration. If a show is more than half over when interrupted, patrons will be issued rain check tickets only. If you choose not to attend, and the show goes on as scheduled, there are no refunds.
