Fairy tales can come true… with a little help from fate BY DANNY HOPKINS UP NORTH BRIDE
S
ometimes, love is just like a fairy tale — you meet Prince Charming, or someone who looks like a fictional version of him. “He looks like the guy from ‘Shrek’ — not the ogre, but Prince Charming,” Jaime remembers thinking when she first saw a picture of her future husband, Todd Prior. “I found my Prince Charming,” Jaime said with a laugh. Jaime and Todd, who reside in Midland, were married in May 2008, but it all started in 2006 with that photograph. Jaime’s friend, a nurse practitioner, met Todd, who works as a respiratory therapist and college instructor. The friend decided she wanted to set the two up. They seemed to have a lot in common — they were both outdoorsy and worked in the medical field (Jaime is a cardiovascular research nurse). The first step was to swap photos. Jaime gave Todd what you would call a standard picture. Todd, on the other hand, passed along a photo of himself from Halloween. In the picture, he’s clad in a fake handlebar

mustache, an oversized sombrero and a poncho. “He thought to not pick a great picture of himself looking studly. He chose to go the comical route,” Jaime said. “I had to meet him after that.” But, it turns out, the setup didn’t pan out. That’s when fate stepped in. Jaime and Todd were both at a restaurant with their respective groups of friends. Todd saw someone he recognized from a photograph (Jaime, of course), so he walked over to her and introduced himself, saying, “I think we’re supposed to meet.” They were physically attracted to each other immediately, and, after talking for a bit, decided they wanted to see more of each other. The first official date was a modest affair, a quick dinner, because Todd was heading off to Europe for business. But when he came back to
America, the new couple picked up where they left off. They discovered being together felt comfortable, felt right. And Todd said he knew early on she was the one. “I’d never met anyone like her,” Todd said. “She had all the qualities that I was looking for that I never thought I’d actually find. She keeps me on my toes.” For Jaime, though, it took a little longer. “I tried denying I liked him for the longest time, but he saw right through me,” she said. Todd seemed too good to be true, Jaime said, and she told herself it was easier to say no. “A girl’s got to be careful,” she added. Todd remained persistent, and eventually convinced Jaime that his aim was true. In late December 2007, Jaime and Todd took a trip overseas. Little did Jaime know, Todd had
asked her father for her hand in marriage, and tucked away somewhere in Todd’s luggage was an engagement ring. The couple was headed to Budapest, and then to Vienna on New Year’s Eve. So worried he’d lose the ring, Todd kept it in his fanny pack for the whole trip. Walking around Vienna, he couldn’t keep his eyes off his watch. His plan was to propose at midnight beneath the clock tower. As they took in the sights, they lost track of time. When Todd noticed the time, he grabbed Jaime’s hand and, together, they ran to the clock tower. “We got there just in time,” Todd said. “The clock struck 12, and I proposed to her.” She said yes, and the couple started 2008 engaged to be married. They set the datefor May, giving them only a few months
to plan. They picked Petoskey for the destination after falling in love with St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, which they say reminded them of the old-world churches they marveled at in Europe. “We were determined to get married there,” Jaime said. Even though they had only a short time to plan, everything worked out. The ceremony at St. Francis was followed by a reception at Stafford’s Perry Hotel. The Priors have been married for more than two years now, and they both say they can’t imagine life without the other. Married life is very rewarding, but they say the biggest reward is the baby they’re expecting in October. They have chosen not to know the sex of baby, saying that they just want it to be healthy. Todd said their family is one step closer to being complete.

oming into the flower scene with an image in mind is great; having a budget in hand is better. “Women look at all these pictures of arrangements prior to coming in — why make yourself crazy?” said Kathie Beamer, floral manager at Christians’ Renolda Greenhouse of Harbor Springs. “It makes more sense and is easier for us to figure out the best way to budget it if she has an idea of how much she wants to spend.” It is also best for the bride to have a good handle on the color scheme for the wedding, and keep in mind how the flowers will blend with the dresses, noted Jackie Burrell, owner of Sky’s the Limit of Petoskey. “It just all comes back to the

color palette of the bride,” she said.
Changing colors
Taking note of flower trends is a great starting place for brides to decide on the arrangements that best suit their needs. Northern Michigan florists have seen a significant change recently in flower arrangements, specifically in the color usage. Fewer bouquets are adorned with whites and reds, and are being replaced by lavish, bright arrangements. “Lime green comes into play a lot more often. We’ve seen that in the last year or so,” Burrell said. “It makes everything brighter and better.” In terms of lime green, Bur-
rell noted that kermit mums are being used quite frequently. “The lime trend started with clothes — everything goes with lime green, whether it’s white, purple or pink,” Beamer said. Burrell agreed that lime is a good choice because of its ability to blend with so many colors. She cautioned that brides sometimes spring for flowers with darker colors, such as sunflowers, but don’t think of how they will turn out in their photographs. “If they use really dark flowers they will turn out like spots in photographs,” Burrell said. Although many bridal party arrangements are no longer created with a traditional frame of mind, bride bouquets
have progressed less than others. “Bride bouquets still tend to be only a little bit of color,” Beamer said. “Most bridal bouquets are predominantly white.” Other colors that have been coming into play a lot more recently have been bright colors, such as hot pinks, oranges and yellows. The most popular flowers have included hydrangeas, calla lilies, roses and gerbera daisies. “They’re using bright, bright colors,” said Janet Moore, florist at Christians’ Renolda. “We don’t get a lot of people wanting red anymore.” Burrell added, “There are so many pretty and new varieties now. Next year will probably be about hot pinks, oranges and blues.”
“This (past) summer there has been a lot of fruits used, especially pears and limes,” Beamer noted.
Out with the old, in with the new
As Burrell put it, she’s recently seen many other arrangements with an exotic twist; however, they are the exception, not the norm. Adding crystals and pearls to bouquets and centerpieces has been seen a couple times at Sky’s The Limit. “For some brides, it’s the more bling the better,” Burrell said. Beamer has seen equally exotic arrangements, with a different style.
“We did a whole bouquet this year with all herbs such as sage and basil,” Beamer said. “It was the oddest one I’ve ever seen.” Beamer added there is a recent trend to stray away from a tossing bouquet. Although brides many times will want to keep their bouquets and have a designated tossing bouquet created, many are not going through the trouble of keeping up with the tradition. Burrell mentioned for those bouquets that are being made, and bridal party and bridal bouquets, women have been bringing in special keepsakes to tie on to the ends.
Centerpieces
Bouquets are not the only recent change on the flower end of wedding planning; centerpiece arrangements and vases are seeing revisions as well. “A lot of times brides are doing high things and low things,” Burrell said. “For example, they might do tall cylinders and matching shorter cylinders with flowers on top of it.” Many brides display a variety of centerpieces on their tables, not just two different types of vases. Some have short, medium sized and tall vases. Burrell has even seen brides have different centerpieces on every table. “I think it depends on the venue — some places really need the height,” Burrell said. “When you get all tall things, you get a lot of sameness. It’s best if you can just mix that up.” Lime greens have been playing an important role in centerpieces as well. According to both Burrell and Beamer, using actual limes have been increasingly popular.

Finding the photographer that’s right for you

rom the reception hall to the decorations on the table, every detail needs to be perfect. Now it’s time to hire a photographer for the big day. Finding a photographer is such an important part of the ceremony, that Jim Nelson of Jim Nelson Photography of Levering considers it within the top three things to take care of first. “The first three things that a couple needs to do is find their church, their reception (spot) and then their photographer,”

Nelson said. “Photography, after your wedding day, is what you have to remember your wedding day from.” The first step is reviewing multiple options. Check out different photographers’ portfolios and find photographs that you like to see. Make sure to be familiar with the body of work. Each photographer has a unique style, and it’s important to make sure that you find a style that appeals to you. Noah Grieves of Ark Studio Photography in Petoskey says that looking over portfolios
helps a couple to find what they like. He also mentioned that a large body of work with wedding photography shows a higher level of dedication and professionalism. Once you’ve found the right photographer, it’s important to meet them in person. “I’ve heard horror stories about doing everything online,” Grieves says. “They do all their talking over e-mail, and they have no idea who the photographer is. “You want to make sure your photographer has a good person-

ality. The photographer is with the bride and groom for most of the entire day, so you want to make sure it’s someone you would want to hang out with all day.” Most photographers specialize in either traditional portraits, where family members and the wedding party pose for photos, or photojournalistic styles, where the photographer captures moments from the entire day. Many offer packages that offer both styles, but it’s important to understand your photographer, and tell him or her exactly what you’re looking for in your images.
Photo studios are unique and may offer different services compared to each other. Linda Drayton Photography in Petoskey offers video of the weddings. Grieves said that he sometimes brings a photo printer so guest can print pictures from their personal camera to give as a gift. Nelson mentioned that he often gives tips to the bride and groom on planning the event, since many of his clients don’t hire a wedding planner. Price comes into play while making the decision, and it’s probably the hardest to under-
stand when choosing a professional photographer. With digital photography, everyone can take great photos, but keep in mind that not everyone is a professional photographer. “This is the once-in-a-lifetime deal,” said Jana Drayton of Linda Drayton Photography. “If you spend $10,000 on a wedding, what do have left after everything is over? Your pictures.” Grieves said many photography studios offer a variety of packages that can fit multiple budgets. Sometimes just talking to your photographer can help you reach

an agreeable price. “People look solely at the prices and they try to penny pinch,” Grieves said. “Photography shouldn’t be something to penny pinch.” While many couples may look for cheaper alternatives to their wedding photos, it’s a safer bet to hire a professional. The higher price offers more than just photographs. The cost covers professional skills, additional equipment in case of emergencies and reliability that an amateur can’t offer. “A lot of people look at the prices and think, ‘My friend has a camera, I’ll pay him to take some photos,’” said Carrie Gillett of Linda Drayton Photography. “You have to look at the quality. You want reliability.” Nelson said he believes it’s
important to hire a professional because hiring someone you know personally may compromise attention to documenting your special day. If they are a family member or a close friend, they may feel like joining in the festivities of the day — which could cause them to miss an important picture. “And when you miss a shot,” said Nelson, “the shot is missed. You can’t go back and redo the ceremony.” After all the planning and stress of making sure everything is set, just remember that when that day comes, enjoy it. “Don’t stress about the little things,” Drayton said, “That will be someone else’s job by then. When the day comes, just enjoy the day.”

hen planning a traditional wedding, a bride might wonder how to tastefully add her favorite colors into the design and planning of her big event.

Luckily, there are many options available to highlight your favorite color, whether it is chocolate brown or fuchsia, to create a look unique to your personal style — without embarrassing the wedding party. “There are many ways to incorporate color for a reception,” noted Kris Rundblad, owner of MerryMakers, a wedding and event planning business located in Charlevoix. “Using linens is a great way to bring your style and color scheme into the room. You can layer the linens; there are
so many color combinations and styles to use. You may also use just a color napkin, a ribbon tied on the napkin, a sash tied to your chairs or a runner down the center of the table.” Added Sheila Dodson-Wright, owner of Tableau Event Design & Creative Services in Bay Harbor, “In addition to linens, you can add color and design to your wedding tablescape and decor by utilizing and coordinating papery suites such as menus, escort cards and table numbers. Incorporating these unique design elements into

your wedding will create a signature look that will showcase your individual style and personality.” Rundblad emphasized that it is important to use items that will create an impact and a memory. These should reflect your personality because it is your wedding day. Items can be as simple as a colored ribbon around the flower bouquets, colored stones in the floral table arrangements or an added sash to the bridesmaid dresses. “Don’t bring things in just because you feel you need to and keep in mind, less is more. Don’t try to keep up with your friends — this is your day and it should be your way,” Rundblad noted. “Your reception should reflect the ideas that you have put together, from the caterer to the band or DJ.”

However, there are some ways to preserve that look throughout the ceremony, reception and most importantly, pictures. “Nothing drastic should be done, just a fresh and new look for the day of,” said Hillorie Cabble, therapist supervisor for Solace Spa at Boyne Mountain. Keeping up with a normal, daily routine is key. Cabble explained that a lot of change can lead to unexpected problems down the road, and even advised not switching

anything up less than a month out. “Continue with your everyday skin care regimen and wash your face every night to prevent breakouts — a bride is already stressed out enough,” Cabble said. “You never know what your skin is going to do or have an adverse reaction to.”
Finding the right look
For the day of the wedding, brides tend to want to swap their daily gloss and concealer for a more radiant, shimmering look. “It’s better to just enhance what you already do — you still want to
recognize yourself in the mirror and have your fiancé recognize you,” Cabble noted. Instead of springing for a sultry look far from the norm, Cabble suggested introducing a couple of different colors by way of eye shadow or skin tones, just enough to mix up the daily routine but preserve the same image. Cabble highly suggests that makeup and hair not be one of the last-minute details before the wedding. Solace Spa, along with many other salons, offer hair and makeup consultations. Although these consultations are not free, they
give the bride extra security and ease going into her appointment the day of the wedding. “The consultation fee is worth every penny for the peace of mind for the bride,” Cabble said. At Boyne Mountain in particular, they advise scheduling a consultation a month prior to the wedding. “The last couple of weeks before the wedding there is so much going on,” Cabble explained. “This way the professional can write down all the colors and the day of we can create a wonderful experience with them and help them relax.”
Achieving a healthy glow
Creating the right kind of glow is not as easy as one may think. It’s best to steer clear of glittery products and frosted foundations, and to use ones that will look more natural. “It’s OK to put glimmer on cheeks, just remember not to do frosted everything because it’s going to be too reflective in photos,” Cabble instructed. She suggested that adding a light shimmer right above the cheekbone would be the best area for glimmer. Highlighting the forehead and chin can be all right as well, as long as the bride uses the product sparingly. “It’s important to find a good balance; you want a glow, just not a shiny one,” Cabble said. According to Cabble, translucent powders and mists are great products for creating a long lasting glow. She suggested starting with a mineral-based product, such as Sunbeam of the jane iredale collection. This bronzer can function as a highlighter and can be applied to various skin tones. PomMisst by jane iredale was suggested as a mist to refresh the skin. Facials and body treatments are great ways to have healthy, silky skin as well.
Stress-free scheduling
When choosing a start time for the wedding, the concept of how long it takes a salon to complete a group of girls in the bridal party sometimes gets lost. Depending on the circumstances of the wedding — for example, whether there is traveling distance to the ceremony and such — Cabble suggests setting the appointments four hours prior. The group sales coordinator for Solace Spa and at The Spa at the Inn at Bay Harbor, Krystal Birgy, advised setting salon appointments at least six months out. “I have people call a year in advance,” Birgy said. “The earlier you call makes you the priority.” It is important also for the bride
to space things out. According to Birgy, it is best to have nails done the day before the wedding so if anything happens they can be fixed. Facials should be scheduled at least a week in advance of the wedding in case of an adverse reaction and body treatments are best to schedule the day or two before the wedding. And although massages can be relaxing, and are a great part of the pre-wedding experience, they should not be part of the weddingday schedule. Hair and makeup is the only thing advised for the day of the wedding. “Brides try to cram everything in the day of wedding,” Birgy noted. “They will find it is a more relaxing experience if they don’t.”

Ceremonies range from traditional to out-of-the-box unconventional
t isn’t any secret that Northern Michigan is a perfect spot to have a destination wedding. No matter where it is in the region, a prospective couple will need someone to offer the vows, witness and declare the couple husband and wife, and sign the marriage certificate. There are several different types of ceremonies available to the bride and groom. A civil ceremony is performed by a judge or magistrate and there are no religious overtones. A traditional ceremony contains prayers and Bible readings; communion can be included. A contemporary or spiritual

ceremony tends to have little religiosity. An interfaith ceremony is a wedding between couples of two different faiths, such as Catholic and Methodist. A nondenominational ceremony is for couples who aren’t a member of any specific church and have no religious preferences. The Rev. Ken Grimes, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, has been officiating weddings for the past 35 years. Together with wife, Judy, an ordained minister in the Unity Church, they have performed weddings all over Northern Michigan. Ken said, “By far, most of our couples decide on a contempo-
rary or spiritual ceremony, though we are willing to add whatever the couple would prefer such as prayers and the unity candle to any service they decide upon. It really depends on the couple.” Added Judy, “As soon as they have their date and venue picked out, it is a good time to set up a meeting with us. Because this is a destination wedding area, couples like sunset weddings between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturdays.” A destination wedding is set in a certain location, such as a resort, island or on the beach. It is a wedding in which all the parties involved will be traveling to attend the festivities.
There are also theme weddings. These typically have a presentation which includes the couple’s heritage or a favorite time period, such as the 1920s, Arabian nights or a Medieval theme. Pastor Glad Remaly, a resident of Cheboygan, said, “In 2007, I performed a wedding ceremony for a wonderful couple. She was dressed in her native Polish wedding attire and he wore the appropriate formal attire of her native land. They had worked on their own vows, which were beautiful. He shared his vows in English while she shared her vows in Polish.” Some favorite locations for a destination wedding in Northern Michigan include the many lakefronts, lighthouses and state parks in the area. For those daring couples, they opt for something quite unusual. The Rev. Edwin Remaly, husband of Glad Remaly, said, “I performed a wedding at a winter mush race. Temperatures were in the low 20s and the couple’s lead dog was the ring bearer. They were married before their first race with other team racers and friends as witnesses. The conditions certainly made for a memorable wedding.” Both the Grimes and Remalys will meet with the future bride and groom to determine what type of ceremony they would like for their wedding. There are several ways a couple can accomplish this task. They can choose one of the ceremonies available, combine the contemporary ceremony with personal prayers or write their own wedding vows. Glad said, “To have the privilege of sharing in a couple’s wedding dreams is absolutely amazing every single time. To be right there, as the magic envelops you, the optimism, excitement, the hope and love surrounding these two people, it just doesn’t get any better.”

raditionally, the cake cutting ceremony is the first task a bride and groom perform as a husband and wife after celebrating their wedding vows. Today, however, creativity takes center stage with many options available for this momentous occasion. Whether you have a traditional, three-tiered wedding cake or a collection of pies, it’s all about expressing the bride and groom’s personality. Maria Sargent, owner of Sweet Maria’s Confections in Petoskey, said, “In addition to our three- or

four-tiered cakes, which can be round or square depending on your tastes, our most requested cake is the tuxedo cake. The ribbons match the color of the groom’s tux and they make for really nice pictures at the reception.” She added that the fastest growing trend she has seen lately is the addition of a groom’s cake. Typically, they are much smaller than the wedding cake and are decorated in a less traditional theme. Sargent said, “For these, we’ve created simple chocolate cakes with strawberries as the topper to a large replica of the Michigan State ‘S.’”
When deciding on wedding cakes, cost is an issue. A simple way to cut corners and still get a delicious cake is to use a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting rather than a fondant style of frosting. Sargent suggested, “Due to the expense of gum paste flowers, many brides use real flowers on the cake to save money. We work directly with the local florists to ensure the flowers match the centerpieces or the bride’s color theme.” If a large cake isn’t to your liking, why not try individual pies on each table or a simple tart at each guest’s seat?
Suzanne Beer, owner of Suzie’s Pies in Harbor Springs, noted, “I am working on a wedding where they are having five different kinds of fruit pies for a total of 22 pies. There will be one placed in the middle of each table. I have done pies placed on cake pedestals to offer a wide selection for the guests. I also have a sheet pie, which can serve 40 to 50 people.” Pies, cakes, tarts and truffles make interesting wedding favors and provide guests with a memento of the big event. Wedding favors are offered from the bride and groom as a way of saying thanks. Early on,
a small offering of almonds were the traditional gift; however, today’s brides are thinking outside the box. “Our most requested favors are our lemon sugar cookie in the shape of the bride and groom’s initials. They are individually packaged with a nice ribbon and placed at each seat. We also get a lot of requests for our handmade truffles, too,” said Sargent. “We offer individual tarts as an interesting favor. Instead of cupcakes, I make cup-pies which are fun and come in all different kinds flavors. They can be fruit filled, cream filled or full of pecans,” said
Beer. With the growing popularity of the cake competitions on cable TV, Sargent receives a lot of requests for exotic cakes. These are usually an expression of the bride and groom’s personality and quite unique in their presentation. Sargent added, “Though exotic cakes are expensive, you can build just about anything that can be made with cake. We’ve created a pig cake for a pig roast and a basset hound cake, too. Our largest request was a full-size motorcycle that had a removable seat and tanks serving as the cake.”

compromising. Whether you are planning an outdoor wedding reception with an emphasis on the beauty of the area, or an indoor reception capturing the glamour of the moment, here are some ideas to keep in mind while planning the perfect reception. “One of the most difficult deci-
sions to make when planning your wedding is choosing a location,” noted Janelle Langmaack, lead event coordinator for Castle Farms in Charlevoix. “Your location will set the style of wedding that you are having. It is important to choose a venue that will not blow your entire budget and fits your theme or style.”
After choosing your location and creating the wedding dinner menu, the next question is where to seat the guests to ensure a fun, celebratory time for all. With many blended families, creating a seating chart will help make the event a success. This can cut down on the chances of a wedding scene from cranky Aunt Linda or a perpetually single brother, Jack. “I always recommend to my brides to keep the seating committee down to a minimum. The less
people you have involved in assigning the tables, the better. Couples that handle the seating assignment task themselves seem to have the least amount of problems — after all, it is their wedding,” said Angela Whitener, sales manager for Stafford’s Perry Hotel in Petoskey and Bay View Inn in Bay View. Langmaack added, “When it comes to dealing with difficult family members, if they just can’t seem to deal with it for one day, the best idea is to not force them to sit
together. If you can easily put them at separate tables, then why not? There are other things you should be thinking about on the day of your wedding.” Whitener recommended that when dealing with divorced parents, discuss the seating arrangements with each set of parents in advance. This way, there aren’t any surprises when they arrive to take their seats for dinner. Or, rather than one table with parents and grandparents, have each set of

parents host their own table. Also, according to Langmaack, don’t worry about seating the odd man or woman out. There is no strict rule to seating arrangements, so why not have a few tables with an odd number of guests? Here are a few tips to successful seating arrangements from www. toptableplanner.com: ď Ž Keep close family relatives and good friends nearest to the bride and groom. This will keep them happy and protect against hurt feelings. ď Ž Try to keep a balance between family members and friends. You want to keep your guests comfortable, but also get them mingling amongst each other. ď Ž Make sure to seat each guest with someone they know. This
will allow them to be comfortable enough to enjoy the meal. ď Ž Find a common interest. If you have several guests who don’t know each other, seat them with others they can relate to, even if there is an age difference. ď Ž Avoid a singles-only table. It makes for an uncomfortable evening for most everyone at the table. When all is said and done, Whitener offered this advice, “Try not to worry about upsetting guests with not seating them in the best location or with the most popular people. Why not offer some midnight snacks? “We always recommend to clients the idea of providing additional food for their guests about an hour and a half before the reception ends,” said Matthew Waterman, who owns Sweetwater Catering in Petoskey with his wife, Linda. According to Waterman, this is

a safe approach to organizing an event where alcoholic beverages are served. By offering a late night snack, guests aren’t leaving on an empty stomach, which makes for less mishaps and the possibility of over-consumption. “It is an added expense; however, there is a simple way to put together a great snack at an affordable price. Part of the TAM (Techniques of Alcohol Management) program is understanding the importance of eating while consuming alcohol,” said Water-
man. Karen Williams, owner of Galley Gourmet, said, “This is where the couple usually decides on having something that is a personal favorite. So often when they are considering the wedding reception dinner menu, it becomes a game of accommodating all of the guests. The midnight snack is really a place where they can have some fun with the menu.” For the budget conscious bride, stick with simple items
such as a selection of cheese and crackers or a veggie platter. Pretzels and peanuts can be set at each table. Or, ask a flower girl to deliver your favorite starchy snack to those hungry guests. Williams added, “Chocolatecovered strawberries are also a favorite. One bride wanted different flavored popcorns, some savory and some sweet, and we served
them in mini popcorn boxes.” For a bride without monetary constraints, a selection of gourmet pizzas can be offered to the guests. Salsa bars and nachos with guacamole will spice up the night. Or, to settle the crowd down, why not try an array of cookies and milk or a selection of doughnuts? For a personal touch, some wedding couples opt for their favorite
fast food delivered directly to the reception. With pizza, burgers or Taco Bell, this is a quick and interesting way to handle a midnight snack. The options are endless. Waterman said, “Once the guests realize we are setting out more food, it’s hard to keep up with the crowds running back for more. I believe midnight snacks are a safe way to enjoy a celebratory night.”

o the hard parts are done. You reserved the church, booked the DJ. You mailed and sent out the invitations. You’ve done everything but plan that special getaway, where newlyweds wind down after the whirlwind of months and months of planning. But where do you start? Step one: Do some accounting. Find out what’s left in your budget after subtracting all of your other expenses, and find out what you can get away with spending on a vacation. Step two: Once you have the budget squared away, you can start tossing around ideas with your soon-to-be spouse.

If you’re working with a low budget, it’s probably easier to plan it yourself, without the assistance of the travel agent. Travel websites can be your best asset if something such as a quick trip to Chicago is in your future, and monitoring them month-to-month can lead to cheap deals.

Regardless of the size of your budget, you could always do it yourself. But sometimes it’s easier to hand the planning over to a professional, such as a travel agent. Jim Kan is the owner of Andrew Kan Travel Service Inc., and he’s full of honeymoon ideas for those across the budget spectrum. On the low end, Kan said the best way to go is Toronto, Canada. He suggested taking the train, which for two people would cost between $500 and $600, according to Amtrak. In Toronto, newlyweds can hit the theater downtown or take a trip to Niagara Falls. Kan said the best value is a trip to Mexico, which he said usually runs $2,000 to $2,500 total. He said the most popular Mexican desti-
nation is south of Cancun in the Mayan Riviera, with its low-key, allinclusive resorts. Between the cost of Toronto and the Mayan Riviera is Florida. Kan said a Florida honeymoon usually costs around $1,500 total. If you’ve got a bigger budget, you can start talking about cruises and all-inclusive luxury resorts, such as Sandals in the Caribbean. Kan said cruises can last anywhere from seven to 14 days and can vary widely in destinations. A seven-day cruise can cost between $2,500 and $3,500 total. At a luxury resort you could look to spend $2,000 or more per person, which would include meals, drinks and a slew of other amenities. According to theknot.com, a web-
site dedicated to all things wedding, you should start planning your honeymoon six months in advance, allowing you to pick up loose ends as your trip approaches. The site also has some novel ways to watch your budget. It suggests that you fly on days that aren’t peak, such as Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays. You could also start a honeymoon registry, which Andrew Kan Travel Service offers. That way, wedding guests can help pay for part of the trip. When it comes to saving money on lodging, theknot.com suggests requesting a room without a view, and to tell them that you are, in fact, newlyweds — it can lead to deals or special treatment.
