We believe that every family that chooses listening and spoken language for their child with hearing loss should have access to the highest quality education available. Last year, we introduced two new programs to increase this access and respond to needs expressed by parents. Adventure Club is a before and after school program designed for working families. The extended care hours help ease transportation challenges and maximize the time students spend with trained staff who already know each child’s abilities and language goals. We also piloted a teletherapy program – removing geographic barriers via online instruction. Families outside the Twin Cities often have few options, and now we can reach children who otherwise may not have had the opportunity to learn to listen and speak. This year, Northern Voices turns 15. We continue to focus on early intervention and quality programming, enabling children with hearing loss to start school at or above the level of their hearing peers. It’s a foundation that is second to none – and the long-term results speak volumes. Our alumni are now graduating high school and entering college with doors of opportunity wide open. Never Too Early to Start PARENT-INFANT PROGRAM Northern Voices works to empower parents to communicate with their young children with hearing loss through listening and spoken language. This means helping parents to understand about hearing loss and communication options, and how hearing loss can impact communication development. When parents learn how to teach their child to talk, it strengthens the parent-child bond and promotes future language development. It is never too early to begin working on listening and spoken language with a child who has hearing loss. Whether or not a child has yet received hearing aids or cochlear implants, parents can learn techniques and skills for talking with their child.
HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT TEEN SCENE? It’s a club for Northern Voices grads and other teens with hearing loss (ages 13+), organized by a NV alumni family. Teens meet monthly to reconnect with former classmates, make new friends, give back to their community and – most importantly – have fun!
PAYING IT FORWARD: The Teen Scene students hosted an evening of babysitting for Northern Voices families.
Children transition into the Toddler Program when they are ready to begin social interactions in small group settings, usually between 18 months and two years old. Available in the mornings, each child attends as appropriate for him or her – younger children may come only two days a week while older children may come all five days. Teachers continue to help parents learn strategies and techniques for communicating with their child and encouraging development. The Toddler Program features large group activities, small group teaching, and one-onone sessions with teachers uniquely trained in teaching oral deaf education. Individual sessions focus on vocabulary, speech and language skills, and listening skills, while group activities allow for learning and observation of other typical child development skills, such as social skills, cognitive skills, and fine and gross motor skills, in a linguistically rich, supportive environment. Early Intervention
Ready to Succeed SCHOOL PROGRAM Northern Voices offers full-day school programs to help children ages three and up enter school ready to succeed. Many students transition into kindergarten, but depending on a child’s progress, he or she may transition as early as preschool or not until first grade. The Discovery Room is geared toward children ages three to five and features typical preschool activities. Older students, ages five and up, spend their time in the Learning Center, participating in activities and learning skills appropriate to kindergarten classrooms. Students in both classrooms continue to work in a small group setting with teachers uniquely trained in teaching oral deaf education.
