SUMMER DAYS AND CABIN NIGHTS Towering mountains, tiny coastal villages, ‘rorbu’ fishermen’s cabins, friendly quayside galleries and restaurants. Add in the adrenalin rush from Unstad’s surfing paradise – and you have Lofoten. This archipelago is way out west in the North Sea, and has depended on cod for many centuries. In late winter, cod migrate to Lofoten from the Barents Sea, and you will see the results of the annual fishery hanging on the drying racks for export worldwide. Try deep sea fishing in the village of Nusfjord, where you can sleep under the midnight sun or Northern Lights and wake up to the lapping of the waves in a ‘rorbu’, a tiny red-painted cabin built over the water allowing you to enjoy a traditional atmosphere but with every modern comfort. Become a Viking for the day at the Viking Museum at Borg, or go on a ferry cruise in the spectacular 28

Reinefjord, taking in the ‘Reine Ord’ literature festival. Stroll around the Svolvær art galleries, enjoy local delicacies in Henningsvær or join the surfers testing the might of the waves at Unstad. Lofoten is ablaze with colour in summer and powdered with perfect white skiing snow in winter, lit up above by the flaming Northern Lights. Read more about LOFOTEN on Page 64
