FROM SÁPMI TO THE BORDERLAND ALTA - KAUTOKEINO - KARASJOK - HAMNINGBERG - KIRKENES

2

In summer you can really get close to nature in a river boat up the Alta River. Drive from Alta to Kautokeino at the southern edge of the Finnmarksvidda, and learn about Sami culture and history. Karasjok is the Sami ‘capital’ with its Sápmi cultural park and Sami Parliament, and the Easter festivals in Karasjok and Kautokeino are a cultural highlight. Continue across the Finnmarksvidda, past Lakselv and the Trollholmsund trolls. The nearby Stabbursdalen National Park provides summer grazing for Sami reindeer herds, and excellent walking for us along the Stabburselven river. Before you get to Kirkenes, why not take a detour onto the Varanger Peninsula? Follow the National Tourist Route through a craggy landscape of cliffs to the abandoned fishing village of Hamningberg. Kirkenes is the last port of call on the Hurtigruten, and the E6 ends here. Try some delicious king crab and go right up to the Russian border. Treriksrøysa marks the border between Norway, Finland and Russia. Read more on www.northernnorway.com/route6

AN ARCTIC ADVENTURE ON SVALBARD LONGYEARBYEN - BARENTSBURG - KAPP LINNÉ - 80° NORTH Svalbard has four months of 24-hour daylight in summer, and three months of total darkness in winter. Both seasons are wonderful times to visit. Travel to Longyearbyen on Svalbard is by plane. The city is now a modern community of 2,600 inhabitants from over 40 different countries. Explore the city’s excellent restaurants, culture and shops. There is no road network between Svalbard’s settlements, so everyone goes by snowmobile or boat. You can hire a snowmobile, but we don’t recommend taking it into the arctic desert climate on your own. Join a guided snowmobile tour to the Russian outpost of Barentsburg with 350 inhabitants from Russia and Ukraine. In winter, go dog sledding to ice caves, or join a snowmobile safari through the Aventdalen to the Tempelfjord glacier. In summer, go by boat and boot to Kapp Linné and the home of Isfjord Radio. Or you take a cruise up to northwest Spitsbergen and as far as 80° North. You can’t get closer to the North Pole than that.
