Avoid bad habits while at work

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, working professionals spend an average of 8.5 hours per day at work. Many professionals spend much of their time at work sitting down in front of a computer, which can be detrimental to long-term health. Staying sedentary for long periods of time can contribute to a host of health ailments, including being overweight and obese. But professionals who work in offices can take various steps to ensure all that time at work is not having an adverse affect on their overall health.

The Promise of Dignity

“Don’t Gamble With Your Health.” That’s the theme of this year’s Norfolk Area PATCH Health Fair. Denise Brockhaus, chairwoman of business and industry for the health fair, said the health fair would have a casino/Las Vegas feel to it, including a cash cube where people will grab play money for prizes. “We have worked hard for many years to continually improve the community health fair and add features that will keep on drawing interest in our annual event,” Brockhaus said. The health fair is slated for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12, at the Northeast Community College Cox Activities Center. Hours are 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. to noon Saturday. Admission to the health fair is free. A number of free screenings and demonstrations will be offered, including blood glucose, blood pressure, colorectal screening kits, facial skin evaluations, lung cancer screenings, pulmonary function, vein screening and vision and hearing screenings. Attendees can get a complete blood workup for $40, or a suggested $20 contribution for those 60 years old and older. Also available is a prostate specific antigen screen for $25, a hemoglobin A1C for $10 and a professional body composition analysis for $5.

Mothers can find time for exercise

Working mothers have a lot on their plates. In addition to the responsibilities that come with raising a family, working moms also must focus on their careers. Many mothers find that managing such hectic balancing acts leaves little time for physical fitness. But there are ways for working moms to stay physically fit even as they juggle their commitments to career and family.

WORK OUT IN THE MORNING Working out in the early morning, when the kids are still asleep and the office has yet to open, is a great way for busy working mothers to get their daily exercise. Designate a room in your home where you can spend time each morning doing some light strength training before hitting the treadmill or elliptical machine. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity each week, and women who get up just 45 minutes earlier each morning can meet those requirements and then some. An added benefit to working out in the early morning is that many people who follow such regimens insist they have more energy throughout the rest of the day.

LOOK FOR CHILD CARE Many gyms now offer on-site child care to parents of young children who can’t stay home alone while their folks are at the gym. Gyms that offer on-site child care may prove more reliable and even less expensive than hiring a sitter, and some gyms even offer fitness programs to youngsters, helping to ensure kids get the daily exercise they need as well.

Try these tricks to help you eat less, feel better Exercise and healthy eating are the main components to shedding pounds and maintaining that weight loss over the long haul. Although bodies and dietary needs vary from person to person, medical professionals typically advise adults to consume a certain amount of calories per day to maintain long-term health. The National Health Service advises that the average adult male needs approximately 2,500 calories per day to keep his weight constant, while the average adult female needs 2,000. Reducing caloric intake slightly can serve as a catalyst to losing weight. A healthy weight can reduce the risk of certain diseases and conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis-related joint pain. There are dozens of diets designed to help people eat less, and some of these may be more manageable than others. There also are additional strategies people can take to curb unhealthy eating habits, which can contribute to weight gain.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, children and adolescents should engage in physical activity for 60 minutes or more each day. Nowadays kids are spending less time playing outside and more time on their computers or other devices. That reality is problematic for parents who want their kids to embrace physical activity thanks to the positive impact that exercise can have on kids’ physical and mental well-being. Parents hoping to instill a love of physical activity in their youngsters may find that taking a more active role by exercising with their kids is an effective way to get them off the couch and away from their computer screens.
