Gustafson Dance Presents Rudolph at the Lobero Theatre

Saturday, December 7 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. at 33 East Canon Perdido Street, in Santa Barbara Rudolph is a children’s ballet performed by the students of Gustafson Dance, featuring dancers from the State Street Ballet Young Dancers, the apprentice company to State Street Ballet. The story begins with the birth of a young reindeer with a seemingly unfortunate nonconformity: a blinking red nose. Santa is not interested in Rudolph for his team of reindeer and the other reindeer tease him and shun him. Rudolph sets off on his own and discovers that there are many who do not fit in in the Land of Misfit Toys. The toys with certain defects dance for Rudolph and explain the need for him to plead their case to Santa. In this snowy adventure, Rudolph befriends an elf who wants to be a dancer, a miner who can’t find gold and eventually the Abominable Snowman. All ends well, as Santa and the other reindeer realize that those who are different have much to offer. Tickets are $25 for adults and $14 for students and children. Ticket prices include a $4 per ticket Lobero Facility Fee; other fees may also apply. For more information, call (805) 963-0761.

Tuesday, December 10 at 8 p.m. at 111 South Grand Avenue, in Los Angeles The four-time Grammy-winning gospel legends return to belt out their rousing and spiritual renditions of Christmas carols, hymns and pop standards. Formed in 1939 by glee club members at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind, The Blind Boys of Alabama have built their dynasty on gospel music. Rock-solid religious faith certainly helps account for their vibrant longevity. So does their unshakeable conviction that they were put here for the express purpose of singing. But an equally important factor, which is not always shared by their peers, is the Blind Boys’ open-mindedness. Old-time Gospel music circles are often marked by rigid conservatism and the dismissal of popular music as a worldly temptation of the Devil. The Blind Boys, by contrast, shun worldliness yet eagerly embrace the world, bringing spiritual music to secular audiences in order to spread their message.
