Saturday, July 26 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at 4200 Olivas Park Drive, in Ventura Guitars, Bongos, Congas, Trumpets, Saxophone, Bass, Drums and even an Accordion make up Spencer the Gardener, a California sun kissed, Latin tinged, genre bending, big band Surf Mariachi indie pop affair. The concert is part of Music Under the Stars Concert Series. Put on your dancing shoes and enjoy a night of summer magic “dancing with the stars” on a majestic wooden ballroom floor. Tickets are $20 for the general public and $10 for a table for four. Friday, August 1 at 7 p.m. at 2351 E. Main St. in Ventura The Ventura Jazz Collective is a group of musicians that play and love jazz – the great American art form. We enjoy performing straight ahead jazz in various formats, ranging from a duo of guitar and bass to a vocal sextet. Available to play shows, private events, and clubs the VJC is dedicated to providing great jazz that engages but never intrudes, invites but never overwhelms. The VJC is comprised of seasoned musicians that include guitar, sax, flute, percussion, bass, and vocals. We are familiar with jazz standards and enjoy playing all styles from Latin to Bebop, from Swing to West Coast Jazz. Band members include Bill Bannister on Keyboards, Doug Johnson on Drums, Patrick Martin on Tenor Sax, and Pablo Plasencia on Bass with guests singer Crystal Rose Sanchez and Alto Saxman Sal Avila. Ojai Ave., in Ojai Belle is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay and an African woman named Maria Belle. Dido was raised in England as a free gentlewoman by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield and his wife. Though her lineage affords her certain privileges, there are limits. After meeting an idealistic young man, he and Belle help shape Lord Mansfield’s opinions, as Lord Chief Justice, in early landmark rulings on slavery. Title and Deed at the Rubicon Theatre

Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27 at 1006 E. Main St., in Ventura Title and Deed is a lyrical, haunting, funny celebration of life and language. Conor Lovett (pictured) plays Man, a character who has just arrived and wants to describe his homeland, his journey and his encounters. Man searches for the possibility of connection in a world where fewer and fewer people can claim to be “from here.” Show time is 7 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. LaJJazzo Big Band at the SOhO Restaurant and Music Club

Wednesday, July 30 at 7:30 p.m. at 1221 State St., in Santa Barbara The Youth Jazz Orchestra of Brandenburg was established in 1994 and has since developed into the best and most sought after big band in the state. In the fully occupied Big Band (5 trumpets, 5 trombones, 5 saxophones, guitar, piano, bass, drums) are about 30 permanent members between the ages of 16-25 years. The spectrum ranges from pupils about amateur musicians to music students with a professional aim of a music educator or professional musician. In general, the membership is limited to two years - at regularly held auditions young talents have the chance to present themselves at any time. Tickets are $7. This event is all ages event. Saturday, August 2, at 6:30 p.m. at 28434 Roadside Dr., in Agoura Hills This songstress delivers each performance with pleasure, insight and passion. Born in Detroit, Michigan, currently living in San Fernando Valley, California, Perlene is the daughter of jazz pianist, the late Richard “Dick” Thurston. Perlene is stylistically versatile infusing her warm personal approach to jazz, standards, ballads, blues, pop, R&B, a bit of rock, country/western, latin/calypso and some gospel selections. Her large and evolving repertoire is all delivered with feeling. The reason and the source of her musical expression, no matter what genre is love. Another song phrase sums it up nicely.

Wednesday, August 6 at 8 p.m. at 2301 N. Highland Ave., in Los Angeles Herbie goes orchestral! Led by Vince Mendoza, Hancock’s compositions breathe new life, to sweeping effect, with the addition of orchestral arrangements. Up-and-coming jazz singer Gregory Porter adds warmth and old-school soul with his own set. Also performing is the Robert Glasper Experiment.
