Area squads set for fall season AREA/From Page 9F on its own, said the transition from the 11-man game to 8-man will be the key to his team’s season. “We need to learn and play that way at game speed for the first time,” Birdsall said. “We are not real big, but we have a lot of team speed at our skill positions, which will help us.” Junior Tyler Birdsall was the leading receiver for Missouri Valley last year but will take over at quarterback for the Hawkeyes. Junior Jake Roden was the leading rusher for Roden the Big Reds and returns this fall to play for West Harrison. The Hawkeyes also return five others with starting experience: seniors Jeff Brown, Bobby Prucha, Lyle Nichols, Colton Loomis and Jake Moore. Birdsall also mentioned freshmen Trenton Haldstrom, Dalton Pospisal and Gavin Armstrong, along with sophomores Seth Milikan and Dustin Peasley and junior Adrial King. Birdsall said he looks to Exira/EH-K

and Glidden-Ralston to be the toughest teams in District 7. “I feel like we can be in the hunt with Boyer Valley and Woodbine after that,” Birdsall said. “We haven’t had a winning season in a long time and I feel like we have the potential to get one and make the playoffs by finishing in the top four in our district.”

WOODBINE Coach: Jason Strong, 7th year Class, district: Eight-Man, District 7 2011 record: 3-7 (lost to FremontMills 62-22 in first round of Eight-Man playoffs) Key Returners: Seniors: Sam Powers, QB; Kyle Kuhlman, RB/LB; Matt Monahan, OL/LB; Josh Metusik, WR/LB; Mason Mentink, TE/LB; Darin Peterson, OL/DL; Jameson Delaney, WR. The Word: Woodbine has had some success over the last four years, and would like to continue to build off that success in 2012. “We’ve made the playoffs three out of the last four years,” coach Jason Strong said. “We haven’t gotten past the first round, but we have quite a bit of experience and are looking to build on that and make a run.” The Tigers will be led by a deep senior class, including Sam Powers at

quarterback and Kyle Kuhlman at running back and linebacker. Strong wants to focus more on the option on offense and has put in a new 3-4 base defense. He feels his team’s experience will help with the transition. He is also hoping that having senior leadership will help keep the team mentally focused throughout the season, since that has been an issue in year’s past. Powers Strong is looking for some younger kids to step up and fill in the backup roles to add some depth to the roster. The Woodbine coach likes his team’s chances to be competitive in District Seven of the Eight-Man class. The Tigers will be tested early with Glidden-Ralston and Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton in the first half of the season. “If we can stay healthy this year,” Strong said, “we can accomplish quite a bit as a team and make some noise in the playoffs.” — By Matt Gubbels, DeAnn Fritsch and Spencer Fritsch
