MEN’S BASKETBALL COMMITTEE The NJCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Committee is responsible for setting policies and procedures for the approval by the NJCAA Board of Directors. This committee is made up of NJCAA Region Directors, Assistant Region Directors and the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches Association President.

The NJCAA will release 14 rankings for Division I Men’s Basketball throughout the season. The poll release dates are: Nov. 15, 22, 29, Dec. 6, 13, Jan. 10, 18*, 24, 31, Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28 and March 6. The rankings will be released on the NJCAA website (www.njcaa.org) and distributed to the media at approximately 1 p.m. on each poll date. All Region Directors with Division III programs in their region submit the top teams in their region for national poll consideration to the NJCAA each Monday. The NJCAA then formulates a report based on that information and distributes it DIII voters. Voters then submit their votes to the NJCAA. 2011-12 MBB DIII District Directors / Poll Voters

MOUNTAIN VIEW: 2011 DIII CHAMPS Lions Win First Championship The Lions of Mountain View College (Texas) won its first NJCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship with a 72-64 victory over Rochester Community & Technical College (Minn.). Marcus Price led the Lions with 18 points followed by Eliwasa Barker and Ashley Crayton who both had 11. William Talton had 11 assists in the title game. Mountain View came into the tourney unranked and knocked off No. 1 Davidson County CC (N.C.) 95-89 in the firstround. The Lions then defeated unranked Ocean County College (N.J.) 77-71 in the semifinals before upsetting No. 2 Rochester in the finals. The Lions ended their championship season at 25-8.

11-12 DIII MBB Coach & Player of the Year

Mountain View’s Phillips and Sullivan’s Early Garner Coach and Player of the Year Awards for Division III The NJCAA Men's Basketball Coaches Association named Mountain View, Texas’ Leroi Phillips the Division III Coach of the Year and Cleanthony Early of Sullivan County, N.Y. was selected as Player of the Year. Division III Coach of the Year LeRoi Phillips led his Mountain View Lions to their second straight Region 5 / District 3 Championship this season. After placing seventh at last season’s DIII National Championship Tournament, the Lions entered the 2011 bracket unranked but that didn’t stop Phillips and his team from winning the program’s first ever national title in men’s basketball. The Lions knocked off No. 1 Davidson County CC (N.C.) 95-89 in the first-round and then defeated unranked Ocean County College (N.J.) 77-71 in the semifinals before upsetting No. 2 Rochester CTC (Minn.) 72-64 in the title game. In his six years at Mountain View, Phillips has a career mark of 81-67. However, he is most proud of the fact that his 2011 squad has a team GPA near 3.00.

Division III Player of the Year Cleanthony Early (6’8”- 220 lbs. - F) received Division III First-Team All-American honors as a freshman in 2011 after averaging a double-double of 20.8 points and 11.3 rebounds a game. In the process he led Sullivan to a Region 15/ District 5 Championship and a third place finish at the national tournament where he received All-Tournament honors. For the season, Early ranked 16th in DIII scoring (20.4), 7th in rebounding (11.4) and 4th in blocked shots (3.6) and is the third Sullivan player to earn the DIII award in the last five seasons as Jason Johnson won the award in 2007 and Bertram McDowell received the honor in 2008. Early returns to Sullivan for his sophomore season.
