2013 Season Preview The UMKC women’s tennis team comes into 2013 with its highest expectations yet, picked to win the Summit League for the first time in school history. Last year the ‘Roos went 13-12 overall and 6-2 in the Summit League, good for a third place finish. Kansas City had its first winning record since 1991-92 as well. UMKC returns five starters to the lineup, all of which played in the top five positions last year. A pair of All-Summit League selections in senior Laura Bouet (Gap, France) and sophomore Maddie Schulte (Wichita, Kan.) lead the way, while returning No. 1 player and senior Eva Dalvai (Strasbourg, France). Also returning is the fourth-winningest player in school history, senior Suzan Lisenby (Wichita, Kan.), as well as starting sophomore Amelie Amsallem (Chatenay-Malabry, France). Junior Gabriel Pintos (Coatzacoalcos, Mexico) will also bring a solid doubles player to the fold. The newcomer will be freshman Dimitra Stavrianakou (Vrilissia, Greece), who the coaching staff expects to fill a role in the middle of the lineup. Also joining the team will be Linda Ammar Mouhoub (Minsk, Belarus), but she will redshirt this season.

No. 1-2 Seniors Bouet or Dalvai will battle for the No. 1 spot in the lineup this season as both have played in those two spots for most of their career. Bouet is the all-time winningest player in school history, coming into the season with 51 wins. Dalvai is ranked No. 3 in school history with 35 wins coming into the year. She has more wins at No. 1 than any player ever at UMKC as well No. 3-6 The remaining four spots in the lineup will be a competition between Lisenby, Schulte, Amsallem, Stavrianakou and Pintos. Lisenby is ranked fourth all-time with 34 career wins, playing the No. 3-5 positions. She went 5-2 at the No. 5 position a year ago. Amsallem played at the No. 3 and 4 spots last season as a freshman, and went 9-14 at those positions combined. Schulte earned all-league honors as a freshman, finishing 17-13 overall. In league play she was 5-2, playing every spot from 3-6. Her win total was a freshman record at UMKC and ranks second all-time for a season.

2013 Season Preview Pintos played mostly doubles last season, boasting an 11-10 mark at No. 3. She is sixth all-time in doubles wins with 23, and her 11 wins at No. 3 last year was a school record. Stavrianakou is expected to come in and contribute right away after an outstanding prep career in Greece. She was ranked No. 4 in her country for Under 16 players during her career. Summit League Poll The Kansas City’s men’s and women’s teams are the favorites to claim the 2013 Summit League Tennis Championships according to the preseason poll. UMKC’s women aim for their first title after setting the school record for wins in each of the past three seasons. The Kansas City sweep marks the first time since 2009 that the same school was picked as both the men’s and women’s tennis favorite. Kansas City garnered five of seven first-place votes to total 46 points, edging out Fort Wayne’s 44 points and two first-place votes.

On the schedule are three BCS conference schools in Missouri, Kansas and Iowa State. The Cyclones actually play in Kansas City on March 19. The home-opener takes place on February 8, when Southern Illinois-Edwardsville comes to town. Kansas City has 11 home matches on the slate this year. Conference play begins at home as the ‘Roos host the first of two clusters in Kansas City on March 14-16. UMKC will face four league opponents in three days.

The Plaza Tennis Center

The UMKC men’s and women’s tennis teams practice and compete at the Plaza Tennis Center, which is located just minutes away from the UMKC campus. The Plaza Tennis Center sits next to the Country Club Plaza, the Midwest’s oldest outdoor shopping area featuring a number of unique shops, restaurants, boutiques and Spanish architecture. The facility includes 14 outdoor lighted courts, a pro shop and locker rooms. The exhibition court, adjacent to the clubhouse, features permanent and bleacher seating for about 300 spectators. The center has hosted many events, including three Big 12 and the final Big Eight Championships, NCAA Division II Nationals, the Missouri Valley’s National Qualifier Sweet 16, a USTA professional men’s satellite tournament, USA Tournament Tennis sanctioned play, USTA leagues and instructional programs. The facilty has received local, regional and national awards since its grand opening in 1996. In 1998, the United States Tennis Association named the center a USTA National Outstanding Public Tennis Facility. In 2005, it was named PTR Public Facility of the Year by the United States Professional Tennis Registry. In 2007, the Plaza Tennis Center was recognized as one of the top-50 Tennis Welcome Centers in the country. Over the years, the center has received honors, including numerous USTA section and district tournament and event of the year awards, including the 2007 Tournament of the Year for the USTA-Missouri Valley Futures. Other awards the facilty has received include PITCH Magazine’s “Best Place to Find Love”. The PTC’s staff has also been recognized for distinguished service, outstanding officiating, community service and outstanding clinician.

Kendell Hale Head Coach (6th Season) Northwest Missouri St., 1990 Kendell Hale is in his sixth season as the head coach of the UMKC men’s and women’s tennis program. Overall, the 2012-13 season will be Hale’s 19th as a collegiate head coach, where he has compiled a 340-242 overall combined men’s and women’s record. On the women’s side, he has a record of 42-63 at UMKC, while boasting a 63-46 mark with the men. Hale has orchestrated an amazing turnaround with the men’s and women’s tennis programs since joining the department in 2008. He has guided both the men’s and women’s squads to numerous school-record win totals and has produced three Summit League regular season titles, three Summit League Tournament crowns and three NCAA Tournament appearances. He was also selected at the 2010 USTPA National Coach of the Year for his turnaround effort, as well as 2009 USPTA Missouri Valley College Coach of the Year, and the 2011 Summit League Men’s Coach of the Year. In five seasons at the helm, Hale has coached 19 all-league honorees on the men’s side and nine all-league selections on the women’s side. He’s also coached three Summit League Players of the Year and three Summit League Newcomers of the Year. MEN In 2012, the squad overcame numerous injuries early in the season and captured a share of its third consecutive regular season Summit League title, while hosting the conference tournament and storming through the bracket without dropping a point in wins over South Dakota State and IUPUI to claim the league tournament crown and advance to the NCAA Tournament. UMKC had four allconference selections, as well as the Player (Grant Fleming) and Newcomer (Tomas Patino) of the Year in the league.

play during the regular season without dropping a single team point, as it claimed The Summit League regular season title. The ‘Roos advanced to the league tournament final for the second straight year before being upset by third-seeded Oral Roberts.

Midwest Region Championships from 1995-97, and he coached six top-30 Division II student-athletes. His team finished the 1997 season as the 12th ranked team in the nation in the NAIA, which led to him being named the NAIA Midwest Region Coach of the Year.

Hale’s student-athletes produced unprecedented success on the court, as senior Patrick Smith was named The Summit League Player of the Year. Smith along with Bret Berryman, Serge Ristivojevic and Gustavo Guerin also received all-Summit League honors. Ristivojevic broke the school record for single season singles victories (18), while Smith and Berryman set the single season doubles mark (18).

Hale has been honored at every level since joining the coaching profession. He is the only coach to be named the USPTA College Coach of the Year five times (2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009), and he has been selected as the Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year on three occasions (2001, 2002, 2007). In 2003, Hale was also selected as the NCAA Central Region Coach of the Year.

In 2009, Hale guided the men’s squad to a 14-7 overall record and a 5-1 mark in Summit League play. After finishing as the regular season runner-up, Hale led UMKC to a Summit League Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament berth with a tight 4-2 victory over top-seeded Oral Roberts. The tournament final win gave the ‘Roos their 14th victory of the season, which tied the then school record for single season victories. A trio of players earned all-league honors, while Bret Berryman was tabbed The Summit League Newcomer of the Year. Under Hale’s guidance, Patrick Smith closed out the 2009 season with six straight victories to give him a total of 14 singles wins on the year. The 14 victories were tied for the second most wins in the single season record books. Hale also led the ‘Roos to unprecedented success at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships, as he coached players to the Round of 16 for the first time in school history.

In 2011, he led the men to the Summit League regular season and tournament titles (went 16-7, 6-0), while helping the women to a school record win total (12) and an appearance in the championship match of the league tournament for the first time in school history. Nino Hasandedic was named the men’s Summit League Newcomer and Player of the Year as well, and was named League Coach of the Year for his efforts.

CAREER The Kangaroos also have excelled in the classroom under Hale’s watch. The men’s team earned ITA allAcademic Team honors in 2008 and 2012 and the women’s squad received the distinction in 2008, 2009 and 2012. Additionally, 11 student-athletes have been selected as ITA Scholar Athletes, 39 have been named to The Summit League Winter/ Spring Academic all-League team and 23 were Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence honorees.

During the 2010 season, Hale led the men’s team to a 17-7 overall record, which included a school record 11-match winning streak. The 17 victories were the most in a single season in the record books. The squad finished a perfect 6-0 in league

Prior to becoming a Kangaroo, Hale spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Rockhurst University, where he guided the Hawks to nine NCAA Tournament appearances in 10 years as an NCAA Division II university. He led Rockhurst to the

Hale also was selected as the USPTA Coach of the Year in 2001, the USPTA Missouri Club Professional of the Year in 1998, and he was the USA Tennis Coordinator for Kansas City in 1997. Not only did Hale have success on the court, but he also was successful in the classroom as well, as his teams at Rockhurst captured eight Team Academic all-America awards. In addition to his duties with the Hawks, Hale has served as the tennis director at Oakwood Country Club since 2004. From 1997-99, he was the head tennis professional at the Plaza Tennis Center, where the venue was named the Facility of the Year in 1998. Before going to the PTC, Hale served as the head assistant tennis professional/junior coordinator at Kansas City Country Club from 1991-95. Hale has also been a United States Professional Tennis Association board member for 10 years, and he is the USPTA tester for the Kansas City region. Hale’s playing career began at Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas, where he was ranked 43rd in the NJCAA national rankings. After a successful twoyear stint, Hale played two seasons at Northwest Missouri State, where he helped the Bearcats to a No. 12 ranking in the NCAA Division II poll. He was the only NWMSU player to win a MIAA conference title in 1990 and during that same year, he was the conference doubles runner-up. Hale earned his bachelor of science degree in psychology/sociology from Northwest Missouri State in 1990. He then earned his masters of religious education from the Midwestern Seminary in 1997.

Cassidy Mears Assistant Coach (1st Season) BYU, 2010 Cassidy Mears was named the top assistant coach in the summer of 2012. He came to UMKC after spending the 201112 season as an assistant with Rockhurst. A Shawnee, Kansas product, he played four years at Brigham Young University and finished his career as the third winningest player in school history. He helped his team finish No. 22 in the nation as a senior (2010), earning conference Player of the Week honors four times during the year. He also served as team captain for three seasons, and went undefeated in conference play during both his junior and senior campaigns. Mears was a three-time all-conference and academic allconference selection during his time there, and won the Floyd Johnson Service Award as well. He also served as the SAAC

President for the entire student-athlete body at BYU. Since coming back to Kansas City, he has been an instructor/ professional for Kansas City United Tennis, coaching youth players all the way up to high-level junior and high school players. He also hosted and directed numerous tournaments during his time there. In his season at Rockhurst, he helped organize travel, practice structure, and team dynamics. He helped the Hawks to their best finish in school history as well. A product of Bishop Miege High School, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science with a minor in business management from BYU in 2010. He is currently finishing his master’s degree in business administration from Rockhurst.

The Evolution of the Kangaroo

hen choosing a mascot, the discussion usually starts with three main categories - predatory animals, historical or regional figures, or humans that represent power and strength - and ends with a collection of the usual suspects. Thanks to Walt Disney, The Kansas City Star and the Kansas City Zoo, Kansas City has a very unique mascot, but how exactly does the Kangaroo fit? As it turns out, quite well. In 1936, the issue of a mascot was first brought up by the editors of The University the campus newspaper for Kansas City University. Although there were no organized intercollegiate athletics teams at the time, the newspaper staff felt that KCU’s debate team - and more importantly the school itself - deserved a unique identity. During that same year, the Kansas City Zoo purchased a pair of baby Kangaroos, and The Kansas City Star lit the fire with an article titled “Kangaroo May Go To KCU ... Student Editors Believe University Should Have A Symbol.” Others on campus were not as enthusiastic. The editors of The Crataegus - the University’s yearbook - thought that a Kangaroo was not an appropriate symbol for KCU. A proposed feature page in the 1936-37 yearbook for the Kangaroo emblem was deleted, sparking a tremendous amount of debate. As the debate wore on, interest from the campus community began to wane. It looked as if KCU would not adopt a mascot after all. But in 1937, two events would combine to indelibly link the Kangaroo with the University and give the mascot a name.

The first incarnation of Kasey Kangaroo was inked by Marceline, Mo., native Walt Disney, and featured the KCU mascot alongside a somewhat more famous rodent.

During the student government elections in the spring semester, the CO-OP Party adopted the Kangaroo as its official mascot, naming him Kasey. With a landslide victory in April behind the slogan “Kasey fits KC”, the first part of the foundation was laid. During the same month the first issue of KCU’s humor magazine - The Kangaroo - was published, with a kangaroo gracing the cover. Six months later, a kangaroo made another appearance on the cover of The Kangaroo, and although it wasn’t a solo appearance, it put a quick end to the debate over whether a kangaroo was an appropriate mascot for KCU. Missouri native and famed cartoonist Walt Disney provided the artwork for the cover illustration, which featured Mickey Mouse shaking hands with Kasey Kangaroo. In a matter of a few years, The Kangaroo thrived while The Crataegus floundered, with the latter eventually folding. The Kangaroo became the University’s yearbook and the Kangaroo became the official mascot of Kansas City University. Kasey has undergone several changes over the years, with the most recent metamorphosis led by Kansas City Director of Athletics Tim Hall. With the help of local advertising agency Bernstein-Rein, Kansas City developed a set of new athletics marks in the spring of 2008. After a community vote, the new Kangaroo logo was unveiled in May. With its aggressive snarl, the new Kangaroo capitalizes on Kansas City’s mission to be an outstanding urban university while keeping mindful of the traditions established in 1937.

Kansas City opened a new 109,000-squarefoot Student Union in August 2010. The new Union offers a bird’s eye view of Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza, a new 329-seat theater, a two-story bookstore, new restaurants (Chick-fil-A Express, Baja Fresh Mexican Grill, SubConnection and Jazzman’s Café & Bakery) and 10,000 square-feet of space dedicated to student organizations. Located near Kansas City’s residential halls at 51st and Cherry Streets, the $38.3 million Student Union features a green roof terrace and wide floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the Plaza, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and Kansas City’s Stanley H. With a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, a master’s of science degree from MIT and almost 15 years of high-level experience in the corporate world, Leo. E. Morton brings a diverse range of experience and expertise to his role as UMKC’s chancellor. Leo was named UMKC’s chancellor on Dec. 15, 2008. Prior to assuming the chancellorship, Leo worked at Aquila Inc., joining the firm in January 1994 as vice president, performance management. He was named senior vice president in 1996 with responsibility for re-engineering, corporate procurement and environmental services. Morton assumed additional duties for the management of human resources in 1997 and information technology in 1998. He was named senior vice president Kansas City Vision Statement and chief administrative officer in 2000 as he also assumed Kansas City will become a model urban research university responsibility for additional corporate services. Before he characterized by signature graduate and professional joined Aquila, Leo’s management career spanned 41 years in a programs, a dynamic undergraduate population, a wide range of engineering and manufacturing positions with highly diverse faculty, staff and student body, and active AT&T Microelectronics, Bell Laboratories, General Motors, engagement with its city and region. Morton has been a UMKC Trustee since 2000 and was in his third year as chairman of the Trustees Board when he stepped down to serve as the university’s interim chancellor. He is chairman of the advisory board of Prep-KC, a major regional youth educational development organization. Morton is also co-chair of the Kansas City Area Development Council. In addition, he is on the MRIGlobal, Union Station and Truman Medical Center’s Board of Directors, the Economic Development Corporation, Starlight Theatre, Civic Council of Greater Kansas City, the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, Kansas City Business Leaders for Education, the independent advisory commission on racial profiling for the Overland Park Police Department and the Advisory Committee for the National Association of Corporate Directors, Heartland Chapter.

Tim Hall was named the Kansas City Director of Athletics on Feb. 14, 2007. In this role, he serves as a member of the Chancellor’s executive cabinet, and is responsible for leading the strategic direction in growing the university’s intercollegiate athletics program. Since Hall accepted the post in 2007, Kansas City has seen competitive improvement every year. Kansas City has won Summit League Championships in men’s soccer, men’s golf, men’s tennis and softball. Last academic year, all four of those Kansas City sports were named favorites to win the Summit League, with three others picked in the top three. The women’s basketball team posted its first 20-win season since 1991-92 and its second ever trip to the Summit League Tournament Championship game. Last fall, the women’s soccer team advanced to the conference tournament for the first time in school history, while setting a school record for wins. Women’s tennis also set a record for wins last year, and advanced to its first ever Summit League Tournament Final appearance the year before. Kansas City’s athletics department staffing has grown during Hall’s tenure as part of an effort to catch up to other Summit League schools. Those additions have made Kansas City more competitive in recruiting student-athletes, while providing fundraising support for many facility improvements and agreements in each sport. The successes were reinforced by the NCAA in 2009, as Kansas City Athletics received full NCAA certification without condition. The certification showed that the University is operating its athletics program in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I membership and is valid for the next 10 years. Hall led the ‘Roos to their most successful year since 2000 in 2008-09 and the ‘Roos continued excelling in 2009-10. Kansas City claimed a pair of Summit League titles in men’s soccer and men’s tennis, while also earning the runnerup nod in both men’s and women’s golf, which led to a record 2009 finish in the annual Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. During the 2010 campaign, the men’s tennis team won The Summit League regular season title and the men’s golf program was the league runner-up. This helped the men’s teams finish fourth in the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All Sports Award standings, the best showing since 2001-02. Overall, the ‘Roos moved up to sixth place in the Commissioner’s Cup standings, which was the highest finish since 2006-07. In the classroom, the department posted a grade point average of better than 3.20 this past year. It had a 3.10 cumulative grade point in the spring 2010 semester and eight programs finished with at least a 3.0 GPA. Additionally, Kansas City finished with a 958.7 APR average and the volleyball team received the NCAA public recognition award. Internally, Hall has been hard at work to align the department with peer institutions and the NCAA. He restructured the rules compliance office to be more in line with NCAA rules and the Student-Athlete Support Services Office to better assist and prepare Kangaroo studentathletes. He also continues to work with new Kansas City Chancellor Leo Morton to craft the athletics’ strategic plan in concert with the University’s new strategic goals. From a fund raising standpoint, Kangaroo Athletics have never been better. In 2008, Kansas City received a $5 million pledge from the Stanley H. Durwood Foundation, the largest gift in Athletics’ and the fourth-largest gift in University history. The resulting Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field opened in August 2009 and is among the premier soccer facilities in the Midwest region. Additional facility improvements have included revamped locker rooms and lounges for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball and the retro-fitting of Old Swinney Gymnasium, which provides the basketball and volleyball programs with a first-class practice facility. The project was funded through $500,000 of private support. Hall also was instrumental in the renovation of the Swinney Recreation Center with the installation of new seatback bleachers and new scoreboards, which enhances the venue for the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs. The renovation allows the men’s basketball squad to move its games back on campus full-time for the 2010-11 season. Hall is also in the midst of a partnership with the Kansas City Parks Department to build a sports complex that will house both indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a 200-meter indoor track and a softball field. On an annual basis, the Kangaroo Athletics Scholarship Fund, which was rebranded prior to the 2007-08 school year, has posted three straight years of 50 percent growth, while donor participation is up over 200 percent. He also increased the department’s total sponsorships and gift-in-kind assistance to over $1.5 million and cash and trade sponsorships have increased 265 percent since 2008. Additionally, Hall has increased Kansas City’s external support by 45 percent over fiscal year 2009 from $1.6 to $2.4 million. Hall also has also reconnected with over 200 former ‘Roos with the former student-athlete association. In the community, Hall has been active in an effort to get more community leaders involved in the Athletics Department. Hall restructured the Athletics Foundation Board in 2009 by adding representatives from a number of Kansas City-based businesses such as Cerner, Kansas City Southern Railways, Lathrop Gage LLC, and Mark One Electric. New partnerships have come quickly to Kangaroo Athletics, including television (Niles Media Group) and radio (810 WHB) agreements that ensure a continued presence within the Kansas City region. Renowned local advertising firm Bernstein-Rein produced a redesigned athletics logo and graphics set, while additional contractual agreements have also been signed with adidas, Truman Medical Centers, Pepsi, T-Mobile and JumpTV to better serve the department’s student-athletes. Hall continues to bring leadership to Kansas City and The Summit League. In addition to his role on the Chancellor’s Executive Cabinet, Hall serves on The Summit League Joint Council leadership committee and sits on the league’s men’s basketball scheduling committee and the men’s and women’s soccer coaches committees. Additionally, Hall is also in the second of a three-year term on the NACDA Division 1-AAA Executive Committee and serves on the NCAA volleyball rules committee. Hall came to Kansas City after serving as the Associate Athletics Director for Development at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, from 2003-07. While at KSU, he was a member of the athletics senior administrative staff, working in all phases of departmental management including game and personnel contracts, scheduling, budget, policy and strategic planning. In this role, Hall created and implemented a comprehensive restructuring of the athletic advancement unit, resulting in the creation of the Office of Athletic Advancement. He increased fundraising by more than 33 percent, helped secure the largest gift to date in the history of KSU athletics, a $1.53 million gift for the baseball stadium renovation, and raised more than $16.1 million. Prior to moving back to Ohio, Hall worked at Eastern Kentucky University from 2000-03. Hall began work as the collegiate Director for Development in 2000 before being promoted to the Director of Major Gifts and Special Projects in 2001. In this capacity, he raised over $4.6 million for the university, including $1.3 million for athletics. Hall also served as the Assistant Director of Development at Saint Xavier University in Chicago from September 1999 through October 2000. At Saint Xavier, Hall managed fundraising efforts for a $13 million Athletic and Convention Center. He also managed the President’s Club, and developed and implemented the Cougar Club, an athletics affinity group. Before moving to Chicago, Hall worked at Youngstown State University as an Assistant Director of Athletic Development from 1997-99. In this role, he helped the university complete its successful $26 million capital campaign. Hall also began his collegiate career at YSU, serving in the school’s athletic marketing and promotions office. Hall earned his bachelor’s degree in sports administration from the University of Toledo in 1994. He then received his master’s degree in sports administration from Kent State University in 1998. Hall and his wife, Beth, have four children, Aidan, Aislin, Donovan and Landon, and they reside in Kansas City, Mo.

Senior Administrative Staff Carla Wilson

Senior Associate Athletics Director for Business and Finance/Senior Woman Administrator Carla Wilson was promoted to the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Business and Administration in September 2007. Prior to her appointment, Wilson served as the Assistant Athletics Director for Business Operations for nine years. Wilson is responsible for the human resources and business operations of the department, as well as all day-to-day operations in the absence of the Director of Athletics. Wilson is responsible for the preparation, development and maintenance of the budgets for all 16 sports and nine administrative areas of the department. She is also the sport administrator for women’s basketball, men’s soccer, and men’s and women’s tennis. As Senior Woman Administrator, Wilson is the highest ranking female involved with the management of UMKC’s Intercollegiate Athletics program, and represents UMKC in dealings with The Summit League and the NCAA. She also partakes in program-wide administrative responsibilities, including decision making at the institutional, conference and national levels. She collaboratively addresses departmental goals, supports women’s interests and supports and helps manage diversity, gender equity and Title IX matters. Wilson, who is an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators, the College Athletic Business Management Association and the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association, and was named NACWAA Division I Administrator of the Year in 2012.

Ursula Gurney

Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academics and Strategic Initiatives/Director of ‘Roo Life Skills

Gurney joined the UMKC Athletics staff in August 2008, following a highly successful six-year tenure at The Ohio State University, where she worked in the Student-Athlete Support Services Office. At UMKC, Gurney is currently overseeing the athletics academic unit with a combined GPA of 3.09, a graduation success rate of 83 percent and a comprehensive academic progress rate of 966, which is the highest in The Summit League. For the Buckeyes, she assisted in the academic support of 949 student-athletes in 36 varsity sports, specializing in preparing football student-athletes to meet educational requirements and traveling with the team to the 2008 BCS National Championship game to monitor academic development. Alongside her work in the athletics department at OSU, she has also served as an undergraduate instructor in the history department and assisted in the organization of several international conferences for the Mershon Center for International Security Studies from 2005-08. Gurney, who swam competitively on the national level in Canada, earned her bachelor of arts degree in history from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2000. She also earned her master’s degree in history at SFU in 2002 and is a candidate for a doctorate in history from Ohio State. She and her husband reside in Kansas City, Mo.

Josh Snyder

Senior Associate Athletics Director for Compliance and Development Josh Snyder was hired on as the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance on May 31, 2011. Snyder comes to UMKC from Boise State University, where he served as the Executive Director for NCAA Compliance. Prior to his appointment at Boise State, Snyder spent seven years at Iowa State in several different leadership roles. While at Boise State, Snyder served as a senior staff member for the Compliance Department. He was responsible for all compliance operations and efforts. He began his appointment with the Cyclones in 2003 as the Director of Compliance and moved up the ranks to be named an Assistant Athletics Director in two years. Snyder received a bachelor’s of science in exercise and sports sciences from Iowa State University in 1995. He went on to graduate Cum Laude from Creighton University School of Law in 2001, ranking in the top-15 in his class. Snyder was admitted to practice before all Nebraska state and federal courts. He has served on multiple NAAC Committee’s and presented at several NCAA Regional Rules Seminars. While at Creighton, Snyder received two American Jurisprudence Awards for finishing first in his class in a course, was on the Editorial Staff and was a published author.

Ron Aulet

Associate Athletics Director for Operations/Facilities

Aulet, who began his duties at UMKC in May 2007, oversees game operations for each of UMKC’s 16 intercollegiate sports and serves as point person for construction of new athletic facilities for the Kangaroos. Additionally, he serves as the coordinator for the strength and conditioning departments, and is the sports supervisor for men’s soccer and volleyball. Prior to his tenure at UMKC, he served as equipment manager at the University of Kansas, where he was responsible for maintenance and inventory of all equipment for KU’s Olympic sports programs. He was also the departmental contact for Coca-Cola and served as the chair of the KUAC Staff Advisory Committee during the 2003-04 school year. Aulet received his bachelor of arts degree in management from Hiram College in 1995, earning a master of arts degree with a sports administration concentration from Kent State University in 1999. He and his wife Kerrianne have two daughters - Danielle and Samantha - and reside in Lawrence, Kan.

Jessica Dickson

Associate Athletics Director of External Affairs

Dickson joined UMKC in August 2006 following a successful tenure at Time Warner Cable/Metro Sports, and was named Assistant A.D. in July 2007. She was promoted to her current position in the summer of 2012. She oversees all of the marketing, promotions and ticketing efforts for UMKC, also serving as the sport supervisor for women’s soccer. While at TWC, she was responsible for educating Time Warner sales departments nationwide on network programming as well as creating promotional material and advertising packages for TWC’s client networks. Additionally, she coordinated the highly successful www.beepbeep.com, an automotive marketplace website in Kansas City that averaged 30 participating dealerships under her oversight. Dickson has also served in a volunteer capacity for the Kansas City Sports Commission and WIN for KC since 2005. Dickson earned a bachelor of science degree in public relations with a minor in photography from Central Missouri State University in May 2002 and was a four-year letterwinner for the women’s soccer team. She and her husband Ryan reside in Kansas City, Mo.

Dr. Russell White received his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine in 1974 and completed a three-year residency in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Missouri Medical Center-Columbia. Today he is Professor of Medicine and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in the Department of Community and Family Medicine at the UMKC School of Medicine where he is Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program and Medical Director of the Sports Medicine Center.

Dr. Meg Gibson Team Sports Medicine Physician Margaret “Meg” Gibson MD is board certified in family medicine and has a certificate of added qualification in sports medicine. She works at Truman Medical Center Lakewood Hospital. She participated in collegiate athletics at Washington University in St. Louis. She completed her medical training including sports medicine fellowship in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia at the Unversity of Pittsburgh Medical Center. George D. Harris, M.D., M.S., is a Professor and Assistant Dean at UMKC School of Medicine. He is board certified in family medicine and has certificates of added qualifications in both adolescent medicine and sports medicine. He has written widely on a variety of medical topics including areas in Sports Medicine. He is the Associate Director for the UMKC Sports Medicine Fellowship. His experience in the coverage of athletes and sporting events spans over 26 years. He was previously involved in Spring Training for Toronto Blue Jays professional baseball in the early 1990’s

Dr. Billy Irons attended the University of Kansas School of Medicine and did his residency at Saginaw Cooperative Hospitals. He is on the American Board of Family Medicine as well. He is now at Truman, and came there after 22 years in private practice in rural Oklahoma. During that time he assisted with high school sports. While at Truman he has spent five years in a Family Practice Orthopedic clinic and the last five years he has been involved in the UMKC Sports Medicine Fellowship.

Dr. Andrew Jacobs Sport Psychologist

Dr. Andrew Jacobs is one of the top sport psychology experts in the United States. He works with athletes of all ages from youth athletes to professionals in areas from concentration to motivation, to team building to sportsmanship. His expertise is at helping athletes and coaches reach their peak potential. He became one of the first sport psychologists to work with the U.S. Olympic team, professional teams and a major university in the 1980’s. Since 1992, he has hosted an extremely popular weekly sport psychology radio call-in show. He has produced numerous audio programs on success and visualization and has given over 1000 speeches nationally about mental training and sportsmanship. Dr. Jacobs grew up in Kansas City, received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University in 1976 and his doctorate from the California School of Professional Psychology: San Diego in 1981, with a specialty in sport psychology and performance enhancement.

Rebecca McConville, MS, RD, LD, is the UMKC registered and licensed dietitian. Kansas City Athletic Facilities & Departments Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field

Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field will serve as the official home of the Kangaroos and will provide student-athletes, students and community groups with one of the top soccer facilities in The Summit League and the Midwest. The $9 million addition adds to the growing residential feel of the Kansas City campus. The gift from the Durwood Foundation and its trustees to construct this stadium is another in their long history of supporting a variety of Kansas City initiatives. Durwood will provide seating for 850 fans and a separate addition will host locker rooms, offices and concession areas. Stanley H. Durwood was one of the University’s and the athletic program’s most ardent supporters. His affiliation with Kansas City began when NCAA Division I participation was a pipe dream. Durwood also helped establish an endowed scholarship for Kansas City student-athletes.

Victor F. Swyden Athletics Training Facility

The Victor F. Swyden Athletics Training Facility continues Kansas City’s commitment to the total care of each student-athlete. Under the guidance of Head Athletics Trainer Shelby Brown, the Kansas City Sports Medicine staff prioritizes prevention, treatment and rehabilitiation in working with Kangaroo studentathletes. Built in 1999, the Swyden Athletics Training Facility honors the memory of former Kansas City councilman and longtime Kansas City Athletics supporter Victor F. Swyden, who headed the taskforce that guided the Kangaroos from NAIA to NCAA Division I. A lifetime resident of Kansas City and a graduate of Paseo High School, Swyden was honored in 1993 with the Golden Torch Award, one of the highest honors bestowed by Kansas City upon an individual. In the 2009-10 season, the Kansas City Athletics Department teamed up with the Kansas City School of Medicine Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, under the direction of Dr. Russell D. White. The Fellowship Program provides health care for the studentathletes by staffing the training room 3-4 days per week and will also be available to see student-athletes in need of urgent care. Members of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program will also be present at all major home sporting events and tournaments, in addition to providing assistance with any specific athletic events. Dr. George D. Harris, Dr. Meg Gibson, Dr. Billy Irons and Dr. Russell White all serve the needs of Kansas City student-athletes. Dr. Dan Gurley, meanwhile, is entering is 10th year as the Kangaroos primary orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Grant Smith serves as the team dentist for the Kangaroos, Dr. Andrew Jacobs serves as the ‘Roos pschologist and Rebecca McConville serves as the dietician.

Kansas City Athletic Facilities & Departments

Swinney Recreation Center The home of Kansas City Athletics, Swinney Recreation Center is also one of the finest fitness centers in all of Kansas City. Created through $14.5 million addition to the old Swinney Gymnasium, the center includes five basketball courts, four racquet ball courts, a 25-meter indoor/ outdoor pool and three exercise rooms - two weight rooms and a cardio room.

The newly renovated competition court serves as the home venue for Kansas City volleyball in the fall, Kansas City women’s basketball and select men’s basketball contests during the winter. It is also the main practice venue for the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams. Kangaroo student-athletes enjoy some of the finest locker room facilities in The Summit League courtesy of a major renovation undertaken prior to the 200708 school year. Along with providing each studentathlete their own individual locker space, the facility also features a player’s lounge that includes leather couches and a big screen television. In addition, the lounge is equipped with a computer workstation with a high-speed internet connection.

Old Swinney Original Old Swinney Gymnasium, affectionately known as “Old Swinney”, which is part of the Swinney Recreation Center received a face lift in the summer of 2010. The renovation transforms the Old Swinney Gymnasium into a modern, collegiate practice facility that will better serve the student body, faculty and staff members and community members, as well as provide outstanding training opportunities for ‘Roo student-athletes. The $500,000 renovation plan calls for new basketball/volleyball court flooring and basketball standards and volleyball nets to be installed in the existing facility. The current skylights in the building will also be altered, which will allow for modified lighting to be put into place. The entire Old Swinney interior will be updated and scoreboards will be installed.

Dutton Brookfield Strength and Conditioning Center The Dutton Brookfield Strength and Conditioning Center at UMKC’s Swinney Recreation Center was officially dedicated on Sept. 22, 2004. Led by Director of Strength, Conditioning and Sports Enhancement Paul Arndorfer, the Brookfield Center is designed to help enhance UMKC student-athletes’ levels of performance while significantly reducing the chances for injuries. The benefit of performing structured strength and power training throughout the entire year will give student-athletes the opportunity to reach new levels of physical development. The center contains free weights, plus platforms, benches and machines and the latest cardiovascular equipment. In the summer of 2006, the area purchased the latest Sports Motion system to give student-athletes the video analysis needed to improve their techniques.

The Student-Athlete Support Services Office (SASSO) provides a variety of educational support to ensure student-athletes acquire the tools to meet their academic, professional and personal goals. With a six person staff, SASSO integrates its services within the mission of UMKC and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to promote the overall development of the student-athletes. To foster the positive growth of studentathletes, SASSO provides a comprehensive support unit which includes, but is not limited to: academic counseling, academic mentoring, degree and NCAA eligibility monitoring, assessment, tutoring, computer access, academic and individual skill development, individualized study plans, a comprehensive Summer Bridge Program, academic workshops, knowledge of on-campus resources and Life Skill development. SASSO MISSION: The Student-Athlete Support Services Office (SASSO) is committed to providing student-athletes with a well rounded and diverse education. The support unit has been designed to enhance the experience of the student-athlete in the university setting by fostering independence, educational and personal values and leadership skills. ATHLETIC ACADEMIC POINTS OF PRIDE:

The Athletic Department boosted a cumulative GPA of 3.24 for 2011-12, earning the second highest GPA in the Summit League. In 2010-11 the Kangaroos finished a top the Summit League earning a cumulative GPA of 3.22.

15 of 16 teams finished the 2011-12 with a cumulative GPA above 3.0. The top three were Women’s Cross Country at 3.65, Women’s Golf at 3.63 and Men’s Golf at 3.56. Seven teams improved their cumulative team GPA from 2010-11. 141 student-athletes earned Summit League Academic All-League Honors for 2011-12; this number is up from 136 in 2010-11. 63 student-athletes were named Summit League Distinguished Scholars for 2011-12; this number is up from 53 in

2010-11. 97 student-athletes were named to the Summit League Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence, up from the mark of 76 in 2010-11.

The Life Skills program strives to support student-athlete development in five areas: academics, athletics, personal development, career development and community service. Life Skills Programming: Performance Team - Created to assist in the personal and athletic development of the Kangaroo studentathlete. The education and assistance are supported by a team of athletic trainers, strength and condition-

The Performance Team Programming gives student-athletes and coaches the opportunity to gather information to support a healthy lifestyle and achieve optimum athletic performance. Career Development - SASSO is committed to supporting and encouraging student-athletes at all points in their career development. Partnerships with UMKC’s Career Services and Career Athletes have been developed to best prepare current studentathletes for life after college. Community Service Partnerships - community service is strongly encouraged, and UMKC Athletics feels strongly in the value of giving back to Kansas

City and the UMKC campus. SASSO has formed several partnerships in the community and encourages teams and individuals to get involved. Student-Athlete Advisory Committee - UMKC’s SAAC representatives serve as leaders within the athletic department, and on campus. The group of 27 representatives meets monthly to encourage team, department and school unity, while promoting excellence and a commitment to community and campus service. SAAC addresses issues affecting student-athletes, while also serving as a vehicle of communication among student-athletes, coaches and athletic administrators.

Although Kansas City’s reputation outside the Midwest may be that of an agricultural cowtown, its residents know the truth. UMKC is in the middle of it all, with history, culture and entertainment options on all sides and within just a short walk or drive. Here’s just a few of the options that students at UMKC have at their disposal. The Legends at Village West boasts 1.1 million square feet of retail space and is home to more than 100 shops and restaurants. This northern shopping mecca is also located by the Kansas Speedway and Community America Ballpark. The Kansas Speedway hosts major league racing events like NASCAR’s Nextel and Busch series and Indy Racing League. Community America Ballpark is home to the Kansas City T-Bones and serves as the temporary site for the Kansas City Wizards. The Wizards are currently constructing a new $160 million state-of-the-art stadium at Legends.

Located within a short walk from the Volker Campus, The NelsonAtkins Museum of Art includes works of art from some of the great masters. The lawn of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art resembles a badminton court with 18-ft.-tall sculptures, titled “Shuttlecocks.”

The Country Club Plaza offers 14 blocks of shopping amid beautiful Spanish architecture, fountains and statues. More than 80 miles of lights outline every building, dome and tower on the Country Club Plaza each holiday season. The Plaza is within a short walking distance from the Volker Campus. Kansas City is known as the City of Fountains with more than 200 fountains on the Plaza and in downtown KC.

Kansas City The $850 million Power & Light District is the largest new development project in the Midwest. Just steps from the Convention Center and a short drive from the Volker Campus, the Power & Light District features eight blocks of dining, nightlife and entertainment venues. Located next to the Power & Light District, the Sprint Center opened in downtown Kansas City in October 2007. The Sprint Center is a state-of-the-art, 18,500-seat arena offering marquee concerts and sporting events. Located in the Sprint Center, the College Basketball Experience celebrates college basketball by placing visitors in electrifying, game-like situations. Home to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame as well, UMKC had the honor of opening the CBE and held its first practice of the 2007-08 season.

Municipal Auditorium has hosted more NCAA Tournament games and more Final Fours than any other venue in the country. The UMKC men’s and women’s basketball teams will also play a doubleheader at this historical venue during the 2010-11 season.

Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs, seats more than 79,000 on game day. The Kansas City Royals play in Kauffman Stadium, which just wrapped up a $250 million renovation. Kauffman Stadium’s unique features include a 322-foot-wide water spectacular. The water spectacular is the largest privately funded fountain in the world. Both teams play at the Truman Sports Complex.

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum chronicles the history and heroes of the Negro Leagues from their founding after the Civil War to their demise in the 1960s. The first professional Negro Leagues were founded in Kansas City in 1920, just two blocks from the museum.

IUPUI’s Chen Ni became the rst female in Summit League history to win two NCAA Championships, after winning the platform dive in 2010 and 2012. As The Summit League enters its fourth decade of Division I athletics, the performance level continues to rise to higher standards. A memorable 2011-12 campaign celebrated numerous record-setting and remarkable achievements for The Summit League, its member schools and student-athletes during the league’s 30th anniversary season. “Ascending” and “improving” are common adjectives used in media coverage of The Summit League as it continues its renaissance. Consisting of nine member institutions with over 3,000 studentathletes competing in 19 championship sports, The Summit League has enjoyed unprecedented success and development in recent history. Since rebranding as The Summit League in 2007, the league has produced 54 All-Americans, 37 Academic All-America selections and seven NCAA Championships. In the past seven seasons, Summit League teams have achieved nal national rankings in six different sports, won NCAA regional championships in two sports and advanced in three additional NCAA team championship tournaments. That level of success carries into both the classroom and athletic competition.

Record-Setting 2011-12 Season In 2011-12 alone, The Summit League nearly doubled its all-time NCAA Champions total by claiming four national titles. IUPUI’s Chen Ni became the rst female to win multiple NCAA crowns when she claimed her second platform diving championship in three seasons. The Summit League produced its most successful NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships to date when its student-athletes won three titles. Southern Utah’s Cameron Levins, one of three nalists for the prestigious Bowerman Award, won the 10,000-meter and 5,000-meter races and became The Summit League’s rst studentathlete to nish rst in multiple events at a single championship. Oral Roberts’ Jack Whitt gave the league its third title when he won the pole vault competition. Two additional student-athletes collected NCAA statistical championships as Oakland’s Reggie Hamilton became The Summit League’s rst men’s basketball national scoring leader and Western Illinois’ Sammy Marshall was softball’s national leader in stolen bases per game. The Summit League’s growth and success is most evident at the annual Basketball Championships. Its 2012 event set a record for total attendance, including the all-time highest women’s tournament gure and the third-best overall men’s draw. The last four tournaments occupy each of the top four all-time tournament attendance totals in league history. Popularity of The Summit League’s marquee event reaches beyond the arena. The 2012 Basketball Championships marked the rst time in league history that all 14 men’s and women’s tournament games

appeared on national cable television. Since 2009, every tournament game has been televised, including the men’s championship on ESPN2 and the women’s title game on ESPNU. Men’s Basketball enjoyed a stellar season on and off the court. The Summit League nished 2011-12 with its highest RPI ranking in history, placing 16th among Division I conferences after peaking as high as No. 11 earlier in the season. A record ve teams played in national postseason tournaments with one, Oakland, making the deepest run in league history with three wins and a seminal appearance in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The league-wide success translated to unprecedented fan support and an all-time best home attendance gure. Throughout the 2011-12 season, The Summit League measured up well against men’s basketball leagues across the country and nished with a .500 or better record against 15 of the 17 midmajor conferences. Against both Division I and overall non-league competition, The Summit League amassed its highest victory total and posted its best winning percentage on record. Under the national spotlight, The Summit League was one of only two conferences with multiple participating teams to post perfect records in nationallytelevised BracketBuster games. In women’s athletics, The Summit League sent a record four teams to compete in national women’s basketball postseason tournaments, including an all-time high three in the WNIT. The volleyball season saw The Summit League ranked as high as No. 13 among the 33 Division I leagues in the Pablo Ranking system. With three national champions and the two-highest placing teams in league history at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, The Summit League solidied itself as one of the national leaders in the sport. During the Indoor season, The Summit League nished ninth among men’s Division I leagues in the nal USTFCCCA conference index. A combined 12 men’s and women’s Indoor and Outdoor AllAmerica honors went to Summit League student-athletes. The Summit League emphasizes a balance of outstanding athletics and academics. The NCAA honored a record 15 Summit League teams for APR success that included nishing among the top 10 percent for their sport. Individually, North Dakota State’s Amy Anderson continued to garner recognition as one of the NCAA’s top student-athletes by earning the National Golf Coaches Association’s Dinah Shore Trophy recognizing achievement in athletic performance, grade point average and community service. Similar honors went to IUPUI’s men’s soccer standout Perez Agaba, who earned selection to the Lowe’s Senior CLASS All-America team. A total of seven Summit League student-athletes were named to their sport’s Capital One Academic All-America teams, includes three rst team honorees.

Origins and Evolution In 1982, the present-day Summit League was formed by commissioner F.L. “Frosty” Ferzacca as the Association of MidContinent Universities with eight schools competing in ve championship sports at the Division I level. Later known as the

SUMMIT LEAGUE MEMBERSHIP

One of the Summit League’s most iconic moments came when Valparaiso’s Bryce Drew hit “the shot”, a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, to top Mississippi in the rst round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament. Valpo’s story captivated the nation as they became the league’s second team to reach the “Sweet 16.” Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League has grown to a combined enrollment of over 144,000 students at nine universities, four of which are based in top-58 U.S. metro populations (Detroit, Indianapolis, Kansas City and Omaha). The Summit League’s two newest members, South Dakota and Nebraska Omaha, compete together for the rst time in 2012-13. Admitted to the league in 2009, USD completed its initial year of league competition in 2011-12 and is eligible for all championships this season. UNO joined the league in 2011 and is in its rst year of Summit League competition before becoming fully eligible for all sport championships in 2015-16. Current Summit League member institutions include: IPFW (Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis), UMKC (University of MissouriKansas City), the University of Nebraska Omaha, North Dakota State University, Oakland University, the University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University, and Western Illinois University. Eastern Illinois University competes as an associate member in swimming and diving and men’s soccer and Oral Roberts University is an associate member for men’s soccer. These member institutions pride themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes. The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and eld, men’s and women’s outdoor track and eld, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The league champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in all applicable sports. Since its inception in 1982, The Summit League has had several transcendent moments on the national stage. In 1986, Cleveland State upset third-seeded Indiana in the rst round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament on its way to a berth in the Sweet 16. A decade later, Valparaiso captured the nation’s attention when Bryce Drew hit “the shot” to topple No. 4 seed Mississippi in an NCAA rst-round game that sparked its 1998 Sweet 16 run. More recently, Oral Roberts’ baseball program nished the 2004 campaign with a nationalranking and became the rst Summit League school to reach an NCAA Super Regional in 2006. Three years later in 2009, North Dakota State became the league’s rst softball team to win an NCAA regional and advance to the Super Regional round. During the 2008-09 basketball season, South Dakota State’s women’s team was nationally-ranked throughout the year and capped its season with an NCAA Tournament rst round victory. The League has produced nine NCAA champions, four Olympic medalists and numerous All-Americans in the sports of track and eld, swimming and diving and cross country. Several professional athletes and draft choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Major League Baseball rst round picks, a pair of NBA rst round choices, and one WNBA selection. Former Summit Leaguer Kevin Duckworth (NBA) was a two-time all-star during his professional career. To coincide with The Summit League’s 30th Anniversary Season, the league released a list of its Top 30 Distinguished Contributors from the Division I era as selected by a panel of voters from member schools and media. Four individual NCAA champions and three Olympic medalists along with four NBA players and two World Series Champions headlined The Summit League’s list of top student-athletes, coaches and administrators that was the jewel of the anniversary celebration. In 1964, Indiana University and Purdue University opened the combined campus of IPFW. As the most comprehensive university in northeast Indiana with more than 14,000 students, IPFW offers more than 200 degree and certicate options. University life has become an important contributor to the Fort Wayne region’s cultural growth. Located in the heart of Indianapolis, IUPUI offers the best of both Indiana University and Purdue University, but with an urban feel. More than 30,000 students comprise the institution’s enrollment, making it the league’s largest school. IUPUI is home to the Indiana University Schools of Dentistry, Law and Medicine. The only NCAA Division I athletics program in a 40mile radius of Kansas City can be found on campus at UMKC. A member of the University of Missouri system for 40 years, it is a wellrespected research university whose programs are focused on the visual and performing arts, health sciences and urban affairs.
