According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women, with more than 200,000 cases discovered in the U.S. each year. The good news is that death rates from breast cancer have been declining in the U.S. in recent years, due in large part to early detection through screening mammograms.

That’s why the Breast Center has recently expanded yet again, adding another mammography unit. Installation of a fourth mammography unit adds to the extensive services including: Digital Mammography Diagnostic Ultrasound Ultrasound Biopsy Fine Needle Aspiration

This exciting, free family-fun community event will be held at the Sugar Land Town Square. The event will feature something for everyone – Pink Fire Truck, Radio London Band, activities for kids—Moonwalk, Face Painting, Magician, Balloon Artists and after sundown, Town Square will be lit up in pink to honor all cancer survivors. Another part of the equation of cancer care is cost. Advances in diagnostics and therapy have dramatically increased survival, but the high cost of treating and diagnosing cancer can place a significant financial strain on patients and families. That is the drive behind Pretty in Pink— Town Square, a charity event that will benefit patients in the fight against cancer. Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and the Fort Bend Junior Service League have partnered together with breast surgeons Sandra Templeton, M.D. and Kelly Dempsey, M.D., to hold this event, in which 100 percent of the donated proceeds will stay within the community to assist

Do You Know this Hidden Danger? Sarah Warburton

ou might have tenderness, pain, swelling, redness, varicose veins, skin infections, or muscle strains...or you might not have any warning signs at all. We asked local Vascular Surgeon, Ulises Baltazar MD,RVT,FACS about the hidden dangers in your veins that could put your very life at risk. He says, “If you are concerned that you may suffer from Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT), we’ll review your general health, medical history, and symptoms. After a physical exam, I may order a duplex ultrasound test or a venogram test to confirm diagnosis. Since one of the warning signs of DVT is varicose veins, I’m always careful to examine all my patients to make sure their circulatory system is working as it should.” Are you afraid of “economy class syndrome?” Most of us know DVT as the reason we should move our legs when we’re on an airplane, but that’s not the only risk factor. Dr. Baltazar explains, “Often, poor blood flow, or stagnation of blood flow, in your leg veins increases the risk for DVT. This poor flow might occur when you are not able to move for long periods of time. As a result, when your blood pools in your veins, clots are more likely

to form. Some specific causes of DVT include: surgery on your hip, knee, leg, calf, abdomen, or chest; a broken hip or leg; prolonged travel by car, bus, or airplane; inherited blood clotting abnormalities; and cancer. You have a greater chance of developing DVT if you are obese; have a history of heart attack, stroke or congestive heart failure; are pregnant, nursing or taking birth control pills; or have inflammatory bowel disease.” What’s so tricky about blood flow? Your arteries transport oxygen-rich blood from your heart out to your body, while your veins return the oxygen-depleted blood back to your heart. DVT refers to a clot in the deep veins that lead to the vena cava, your body’s largest vein, which runs directly to the heart. Usually, it may occur in your pelvis, thigh, or calf...but occasionally it may occur in the arm, chest, or other locations. Dr. Baltazar says, “DVT perfectly illustrates how crucial it is to have veins that are working as they should. If a blood clot breaks free from your deep veins, it can travel through the bloodstream. If it lodges in your lungs, this “pulmonary embolism” can block blood flow, strain your heart and lungs, and can quickly become fatal.” “If you notice varicose veins or have pain or discomfort in your legs, come in for an exam. I’ll determine whether your veins are working properly for optimum blood flow...and if we detect any problems, I have a range of treatment options. I am passionate about your elegant circulatory system and my sole professional obsession is keeping your veins strong and healthy!”

There are two things where you never skimp on price: parachutes and plastic surgery.

W

hen you’re considering your choices at the grocery store, it’s easy to see why organic apples cost more than conventional ones. Unfortunately, it’s not always that easy to compare your choices when it comes to plastic surgery. When one surgeon advertises a much lower price for the “same” procedure are you saving money...or setting yourself up for hidden fees, health risks, and incomplete results? Choosing the right doctor’s a hot topic right now. Everyone from Rachael Ray to NBC News Chief Medical Editor, Dr. Nancy Snyderman, to John Connolly, publisher of “America’s Top Doctors,” recommends choosing a physician with Board Certification from a Member Board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)...and the American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only ABMS board which certifies plastic surgery of the entire body. This “gold standard of physician-certifying boards” means that

When you look at the price of your procedure, are you seeing the hidden costs? Too often, patients may be lured in by extremely low prices, only to find additional charges for every little thing. Don’t forget to read the fine print.

When you look at the price of your procedure, are you seeing the hidden costs? Too often, patients may be lured in by extremely low prices, only to find additional charges for every little thing. Don’t forget to read the fine print. Fortunately, Dr. Ahmadi offers straightforward, all-inclusive pricing on his revolutionary, one-stage Lipotuck™ procedure. The Lipotuck™ will remove excess fat and skin from the lower abdomen, as well as smoothing residual bulges above and below for superior results and a quicker recovery. He only schedules one patient a day, so you’ll have his undivided time and attention. If you’re committed to plastic surgery, make sure you can get the results you really want! Frequently, patients undergoing just a tummy tuck still have leftover upper abdomen, pubic and bra bulges. To get the curvy waist you want after a tummy tuck, you may have to seek additional liposuction. How is that costeffective? By perfectly combining tummy tuck and liposuction, Lipotuck™ offers a one-stage solution in body contouring. Don’t sell yourself short! You can have the beautiful figure and flat stomach you’ve always wanted. Expect the best and you can achieve it...with the artistic expertise of Dr. Ahmadi. He says, “My inspiration is seeing the difference my skills make in the lives of my patients!”

your doctor has graduated from an accredited medical school, has completed at least five years of additional training as a resident surgeon, with a minimum of five years of residency training in all areas of surgery, including at least two years devoted entirely to plastic surgery. To become certified, the doctor then must pass comprehensive written and oral exams. Local surgeon, Dr. Ahmadi of Avante Plastic Surgery is certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the prestigious American Board of Surgery. He says, “My respect for this profession and for my patients drives me in every choice I make. I believe you deserve and should expect only the best!”

All About

S

Bob

ince 1998 I have had a wonderful relationship with a locally owned flooring store. Bob and his family have done a feature advice column “This’ll Floor You” for us. Bob was always willing to share his knowledge and experience with our readers on every kind of flooring issues and also kitchen and bathroom remodeling. In UpClose we have a family of service providers that we’re proud to put our name on and happy to recommend to our family, friends and neighbors. We are fortunate to have the best of the best in their fields of expertise. We are one big family that stand behind our work, just like the McKelvey family. We live in the community we do business in and our kids go to school with your kids. When I received a call early monday morning and heard the bad news, it floored me. I could not believe that I would never again drop into the store and hear Bob saying, “Hey girl, what do you need? Money?” with a laugh. More than just business, we talked about kids, news around town, and life...and he truly was interested in hearing how things were going. Over the years, I saw the McKelvey family spend more time at their business than they did at at their own home. Having a terrible thing like this happen just stops you in your tracks and makes you realize how fast everything can change. We were honored to be part of an “All About Community” benefit held on August 23rd at Home Theater Evolutions with help from All Out Offroad, Lupita’s, and all the UpClose businesses turned up to help. Future benefits are being planned by the Skeeters and Floyd’s Cajun Seafood & Texas Steakhouse and on page 14 you’ll see how many other people and business are supporting the McKelveys. In addition, a fund has been established at Wells Fargo to assist the McKelveys with the cost of Bob’s memorial service and Renee’s long recovery. Donations may be made by contacting any Wells Fargo Bank in-person, online, or over the phone and indicating that the donation is for the “McKelvey Family Donation Fund” account #2860841424. Direct questions to Wells Fargo contact Leslie Jones (281) 980-8881. Bob had the kind of spirit that just lit up a room. Losing him is enough of a tragedy. Now we’re all lifting up Renee and the boys, so they can have the strength and support to carry on Bob’s legacy. We will miss you, Bob!

on’t answer too quickly. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph. says, “There may not be a spring of water that can turn you back into a teenager, but there are plenty of ways we can erase wrinkles and give you renewed energy. The best news? You don’t have to launch an expedition to find them...because we’re right here in the heart of Sugar Land!” The first visible signs of aging usually show up on our faces! Protect your skin from the terrors of free radicals, pollution, sun exposure, and the decreased collagen synthesis that comes with age. Dr. Campbell says, “ We can make unique anti-aging formulations

with the highest quality, most appropriate ingredients for your skin. We also offer Chrysaderm, an advanced cosmeceutical product that reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, protects against harsh external factors, improves skin tone, and increases skin hydration.” Even if you look young, you may feel twice your age! Dr. Campbell says, “As we age, the levels of our hormones like progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone decrease. These hormones strengthen bones, calm the nerves, promote restful sleep, decrease fluid retention, and improve energy, confidence, and libido. Thyroid and adrenal function also decline as a part of the natural aging process. Fatigue, weight gain, depression, decreased mental sharpness, insomnia, joint and muscle aches and pains, loss of libido, hair loss, cold sensitivity, recurrent infections and elevated cholesterol are some of the classical symptoms of hypothyroidism or low thyroid. If

you’ve lost your youthful vitality, it may be time to have your thyroid, adrenal function, and hormones checked.” Put the bounce back in your step, the twinkle in your eye, and the zest in your life with the anti-aging secrets at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. Dr. Campbell says, “From topical solutions like day and night creams to the full-body effects of hormone replacement therapy, I work with patients and their doctors for total health. Once we find the best solution for you, you won’t need a fountain of youth to look and feel fantastic!” Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy 281-980-2555 “If our staff can’t make it… then you probably don’t need it!” 4760 Sweetwater Blvd. Suite 103 www.campbellscompounding.com

His wife yelled out for a doctor, and thankfully, Dr. Shannon Orsak of St. Michael’s 24-hour Emergency Room was there. When Shannon said I should get an x-ray, Patti and I went straight to St. Michael’s.” Back at Constellation Field, Dr. Orsak called ahead to brief St. Michael’s about the situation. When the Kaminskis walked through the door, the staff greeted Tim by name and quickly ushered him into a room already prepared for him. “Based on how my wrist looked, Dr. Orsak suggested we get it x-rayed. It turned out to be sprained.” Tim says. His sprained wrist is only one of the multiple times Tim or his family has used St. Michael’s. The Kaminski’s first encounter with the emergency room was a couple of years ago, when their son, now thirteen, had appendicitis. “We didn’t know what was wrong. We called Shannon because we didn’t know what to do. He said we should bring him up to St. Michael’s,” Tim says. After bringing their son to St. Michael’s and getting him checked out, Dr. Orsak decided it was probably appendicitis. Not wanting to waste any time, the staff at St. Michael’s took care of the next step. “They called ahead to Texas Children’s Hospital and got all the registration and ever ything set up. They put him in an ambulance to get there. When we arrived at Texas Children’s we completely bypassed the emergency room and didn’t wait at all for a private room. id your family enjoy the 3D thrills of the Avengers, the Amazing Spider Man, or the re-release of Finding Nemo? “Watching 3D media hasn’t been reported to cause any visual problems,” Dr. Anh Doan of Missouri City’s Vision Source says. “By the age of three most children’s binocular vision should be developed enough for them to enjoy 3D television, movies, or games...just set the same content and time limits you do for other electronic media. As an optometrist, I love learning what 3D can reveal about your vision!” The magic of 3D is nothing compared to the magical work- “3D viewing requires that both eyes function in a coordinated manner, as they converge, ings of your eye when watching 3D. One in four children may have underlying issues with vision, and 3D viewing can alert us to those undetected problems!” Relying on just an eye chart to catch vision problems is like watching a 2D black and white movie! Dr. Doan says, “The eye chart remains an important part of evaluating near and far-sightedness, but that’s just the beginning of what a comprehensive eye exam reveals about the health of your eyes and the way they work together. Traditional vision screenings like those offered at school or your pediatrician’s office alert us to the possibility of a visual problem. If those screenings or problems viewing 3D raise concerns, a comprehensive eye exam will allow me to diagnose and treat any issues!” If you take your kids to see Hotel Transylvania and they (or you!) complain of eyestrain or headaches, feel nauseated or dizzy, can’t “see normally” afterwards, or just don’t see or enjoy the 3D effects that way that others do, those are red flags. Dr. Doan says, “All these symptoms indicate an underlying visual problem. Headaches, nausea, and exhaustion also indicate eyestrain when reading. Bring your family to me for an eye exam and we’ll get you and your eyesight back on track!”

He says, “After my orthopedic surgeon put my leg back together, my legs and back were still causing me a lot of pain and dysfunction even after physical therapy. So my orthopedic surgeon recommended a chiropractor. When I sought chiropractic treatment for the first time in my life, I was amazed at how quickly it showed significant results without the use of medicine or further surgery. Not only was my pain relieved, but I was able to function at a much higher level in all my daily activities. The experience really opened my eyes to chiropractic doctors and showed me where physical medicine fits into the world of healthcare. I felt like I was given my life and freedom back and I decided to dedicate myself to giving that same freedom to others.” “After eight years of education and training,” says Dr. Schell, D.C., “and seven years of treating patients in the community of Sugar Land and Missouri City, I created the Spine and Rehabilitation Center (SPRC) of Texas. The SPRC of Texas brings together all the specialists in the field of physical medicine and allopathic medicine for the care of patients with neck, low back, and joint pain. We offer chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage therapy, and aquatic therapy. In addition, the SPRC of Texas has teamed up with Dr. Mark Brown M.D. of Back Pain Intervention Associates. Dr. Brown is a double Board-Certified medical doctor of anesthesia and pain management, who specializes in relieving acute pain and other neurological symptoms such as muscle weakness & dysfunction, numbness & tingling, or burning & stabbing sensations down the arms and legs. After Dr. Brown assesses and calms the inflammation and pain, I offer ways to strengthen your muscles and stabilize your spine and joints, as well as restore normal motion and balance to the injured areas, so that the pain doesn’t reoccur or require more drastic measures such as invasive surgery.” Life moves pretty fast these days, and it Dr. Mark Brown can take a toll on your body. Dr. Schell says, “ I believe in using every tool at our disposal to help you remain free from pain. My approach is non-invasive, yet effective. I’ll always tailor my recommendations and treatment specifically for you. If you have had surgery, we can help you strengthen the tissues that have been traumatized due to the procedure to help speed your recovery and return you to normal activities. And just like Dr. Brown, I accept all major insurances and believe in collaborating with your other doctors for your best health. Whether you have a sports injury, a joint disorder, or you’ve been living with back pain, we can help!” You don’t have to choose between a quick fix that won’t last or major surgery for your pain. hen the heat is on, it’s not time for amateur hour. You need professionals who understand this Texas heat and humidity...and know how to beat it! We asked Brian Jackson, from Sugar Land’s oldest Trane Comfort Specialist, Jackson Air and Heat, what you need to know. He says, “We’re celebrating our thirtieth year in business here in Fort Bend, but we know our customers come from all over. If you’re a newcomer to Texas, don’t expect the kind of cool fall weather they see in other parts of the country. Everything’s truly bigger in Texas...even the heat!”

Is this September or “Hotember?” Kids in Texas don’t need sweaters, corduroy trousers, or new jackets and hats for the back-to-school season. Brian says, “The only time your child will need a sweater in September is if the school’s air conditioner is cranked down too low ! you find you’re still sweating inside your house and that your air conditioner runs and runs without cooling or getting rid of the humidity, give us a call. Our Factory trained technicians will get your old air conditioner running like new again”. If you think your old system has seen better days, don’t try to make it through the “dog days” of September. Jackson Air and Heat’s got the experience and the reputation you need. Call Jackson Air for a free evaluation of you old system, they specialize in giving you plenty of choices with honest advice with “a system for every home and every budget!” They’ve earned the BBB Award of Excellence in 2011 and 2012 and are Angie’s List Super-Service Award winners, too. Brian says, “The average air conditioner only lasts about eight years in our tough climate. That’s why we like Trane, they will outlast them all. This month

When a Community Comes Together

F

or over thirty years Bob and Renee McKelvey lived a true love story. When they were living in an apartment in La Porte, Bob saw a neighbor, Al, make a simple living leaving home at 11:00am and coming back home at 3:00 cleaning carpets. When Bob suggested going in as partners, together they built their business up. Eventually Renee and Al’s wife suggested selling carpets. When Bob and Renee were ready to strike out on their own, they split the business with their former partners, moved here to Sugar Land and started All About Carpet on a few hundred bucks and a van. Together Bob and Renee raised their two sons, Shaun and Steven, who grew up running around the store and riding with the cleaning crews. Over the past year Shaun began taking on more and more responsibilities in the showroom and Bob and Renee began taking long weekends and enjoying well-deser ved free time together. Even years later, Bob was still friends with the first guy he’d even hired out in La Porte. Keith and Kelly Beitler got to know the McKelveys through the many Skeeters games they enjoyed as season ticket holders in adjoining seats. When they heard that Renee would be celebrating her birthday, they gladly gave Bob and Renee passes to the pleasure pier in Galveston. But when Bobby and Renee went to Galveston on July 21st, the night ended in tragedy. The last thing Renee remembered was the

14 ~ UPCLOSE ~ September 2012

sound of laughter after Bob told a joke to the driver of the horse-drawn carriage in which they were riding back to their hotel. Then her head hurt and someone was asking if she could wiggle her toes. A drunk driver had struck the carriage, killing Bob and leaving Renee and two others severely injured. A few days before the trip to Galveston Renee had just received a letter, with a returned payment and a letter from Blue Cross Blue Shield terminating coverage due to a “pre-existing condition.” The family was told that there was nothing the hospital or the insurance company could do. Once Renee was stable, she would have to manage her recovery on her own at home. Friends of the family refused to take this as the last word. There was no place at home for Renee to recover, no way for their boys or Bob’s mom and dad to continue running the business and paying the bills while giving her the care she needed, no way for her to get to rehab. They started making calls, and people here in Sugar Land literally made the impossible happen. Scott West from the West Law Firm drove right down to Galveston to give Renee his support and advice in an appeal to the insurance company. Dr. Shannon Orsak of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms passed

along contact info for Representative Pete Olson’s wife Nancy. Kaelyn Bujnoch and Leena Taneja from Methodist Hospital and Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Timothy Sitter through his assistant rallied around. With the help of Lisa Collins of HealthSouth Sugar Land, HealthSouth’s amazing rehab team, and St. Michael’s who stepped up to facilitated a CT scan, Renee has begun the long road to recovery. Dr. Lomonte has offered reconstructive dental attention, Fitness Retreat will be helping with PT services, and Milagro Salons is helping to cover hair loss from the crash for the Memorial Service. On one of Renee’s first nights at HealthSouth, Representative Olson looked into her eyes and said, “I have been just where you are right now and I have faith you can make it through this.” When you see how all of Sugar Land came together in support of one of our community members, it makes you feel lucky to live here. Renee has said that in the midst of tragedy, the one blessing is the generosity and love poured out on her family. She’s amazed at how many of you love and miss Bob, too.

This’ll you! Good Neighbors Give Good Referrals “S Sarah Warburton everal years ago,” says Rebecca Stepp. “my husband Richard and I went to All About Carpet and Floors for new carpet. Since they’d been in that same location for over twenty years, I knew about their solid reputation. They have amazing knowledge and lots of experience. At first, they showed me softer, more commonly chosen carpets. I explained I wanted

something that would really last, even if it meant a higher-end product. I liked the way they listened, showed me different fibers, and helped me choose the best for our home. The carpet they installed looked great and held up well...but it was their customer service that really brought me back!” When it was time for more flooring, the Stepps figured why mess with success? Rebecca says, “There was no question in my mind that we would come back to All About Carpet. This year I came back for hardwood in the family room. I looked at everything from bamboo to hardwood. Bob and Shaun steered me towards a variablewidth dark wood that was lightly scraped. It was

beautiful and more practical for our home. They picked out a color I might never have considered, Shaun actually recommended it and it was fabulous. He’s got a great eye for color and design. Truthfully, I also saw a sample my neighbor Shelly had from them and it was the very same one we ended up with!” Getting your flooring redone is a big job, but it doesn’t have to be a big hassle. Rebecca says, “We were only home for the first day of the work, then we left the installers to do their thing. By four or five every afternoon they were gone, so we could have dinner and family time. As a family company, they really respected our home. All About Carpet and Flooring was a pleasure to work with!” About the same time that the Stepps decided to put hardwood in their downstairs...so did their neighbors, Shelly and Geoff Kaplan. Shelly says, “Rebecca first referred me to All About Carpet...and Geoff and I chose to work with them because of their years of knowledge. They’ve done such a good job, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that they’d installed most of the flooring in our neighborhood. We certainly recommend them!” If you see a beautiful hardwood floor or carpet that lasts, ask if it’s an All About Carpet Floor. Shaun says, “Our family is so grateful for your professional and personal support over the years. We want you to know our showroom is still open and we’re still here to fill your family’s tile, counter, and flooring needs.” All About Carpet and Floors 281-265-3700 3145 Highway 6 South (next to Shipley’s) www.allaboutcarpet.com

Fighting Cavities Sarah Warburton

W

ould you rather prevent a cavity or get a filling? There’s a reason they say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Thomas M. Lomonte, D.D.S. says, “Your teeth may have pits, fissures, or rough grooves. Sticky food like raisins or potato chips could get stuck... and not even brushing can remove them from deep inside those cracks. Protective dental sealants can fill in and seal off those gaps to prevent cavities... and they’re not just for kids!” Maybe you remember getting sealants as a child...or maybe the procedure was so quick and painless that you don’t remember getting it! Dr. Lomonte says, “In children, sealants can be applied to baby molars to protect them from cavities. Eventually, these molars fall out and the new, permanent molars come in and can be sealed, too. These sealants usually last about ten years...which means many adults can benefit from sealants, too!” Brushing and flossing help remove plaque from off the top of your teeth... but you won’t always be able to get deep down inside the almost-invisible grooves in your enamel. Sealants protect these vulnerable areas of your teeth from tooth decay by “sealing” off grooves so

plaque and bacteria won’t get stuck and make cavities. Dr. Lomonte says, “I can’t put sealant on a tooth with a filling, but I can put sealant on a tooth that’s starting to show signs of decay. The sealant stops decay by sealing off nutrients and preventing deterioration beneath the plastic.” Sealants are effective at preventing cavities...and that makes them costeffective, too! Let’s crunch the numbers. Sealants can be put on teeth that show early signs of decay. But once the decay has broken through the enamel, the tooth will need a filling. A sealant that can prevent cavities is usually around $35-$50 per tooth. A non-mercury cavity filling can cost $150-200. With sealants you could save the pain of a cavity...and some money, too! Moms, dads, and kids can all get their ounce of prevention from Dr. Lomonte. He says, “I’ve always believed in making choices that protect your health and your pocketbook. Doesn’t that make you smile?” Thomas M. Lomonte, D.D.S. 12122 Murphy Rd. Stafford, TX 77477 (281) 530-1440 www.drthomaslomonte.com

“Stranded on a strange continent, with a strange language and a strange husband, I became a stranger to myself. Since my husband brought me to this country he had prevented me from learning the language, learning how to drive, work or making friends. I lived in total isolation and he was the only person I knew for years. My neighbors were always a source of threat to my husband, so they became off limits for me. I learned how to scream on the inside when he beat me and to do the housework with one hand when the other one was twisted out of shape. I was strong, resilient, creative… but I was also a victim of domestic violence. AADA helped me move to a safer location, found me a part-time job, started me at a literacy school to learn English, helped me with my criminal case against my abuser, helped me obtain a divorce lawyer and guided me with my immigration procedures.”

nfortunately, this story is not unique. The non-profit organization Asians Against Domestic Abuse (AADA) receives between 200-250 calls for help each year. “This year we’ve already helped sixty-five women,” says Rashmi Sharma. “Many women from Asian countries are very private people. Over half the women we help also speak no English, so asking for help is a big leap of faith. We try to match them with advocates from the same country and help them find transitional housing, educational training, business assistance, childcare...so they can achieve independence. We also raise public awareness through outreach to teens and parents, community empowerment, and working with other like-minded organizations. For example, we provide translation and cultural assistance to the Fort Bend Women’s Center and they provide us shelter if a woman calls us after hours.”

Cleaning to the “Max” Max’s Cleaning Tip: Max says, “If you need to make mess disappear quickly, I have a magic trick every family can use. Set a timer for fifteen minutes, pick one room, and start working. Give little kids a damp washcloth to wipe the floors, older kids can work a vacuum or dust, and mom and dad can handle clutter on the counters. If you’re doing the entire house, switch rooms when the timer goes off and do another fifteen minutes in the next room. Otherwise, fifteen minutes in one room each day can really help keep things under control. Who knew a timer could be such a great cleaning tool?”

Taking Care of the Tiniest Smiles

Amy Sharp ne momentous milestone in every parent’s journey is their baby’s first smile…an unforgettable sign that your baby is communicating with you. Dr. Bianca Sanchez at Little People’s Dentistry remembers her little boy’s first smile well…and is looking forward to that moment again with another baby on the way! With the big kids back in the school routine, let’s talk about taking care of these precious “tiny” smiles. “Caring for your child’s teeth begins at birth,” says Dr. Sanchez. “Clean baby’s gums and tongue with a washcloth, gauze, or special dental wipes. When teeth appear, start brushing with a baby toothbrush or finger…and continue helping your child with brushing until he/she has the manual dexterity to write in cursive. We’ll let you know when to start using toothpaste with fluoride. Start flossing as soon as there are teeth next to each other. I learned as a parent it’s easiest to lay children on their backs for brushing and flossing, so you can see what you’re doing. And no drinking at night (even milk or breastfeeding), without brushing afterward to prevent tooth decay!” appointments directly to your phone calendar. ow that summer’s over, are the problems you remember from school bigger and badder than ever? Gossip in the hallways, bullying, and overcrowded classrooms can overwhelm even the best students. If your child is struggling, disengaged, or unhappy, don’t wait until things get worse. Betsy de Vega is a Learning Specialist with over twenty years of experience ranging from Montessori schools to Cognitive Skills Training. She says, “I founded the Kn.I.L.E. Center, home of Kn.I.L.E. Prep Academy (KPA) and EduCoachNow for all kinds of students. Our select private school and our afterschool coaching give kids the encouragement, state-of-the-art tools, and drama-free environment they need to love learning!” When did middle school turn into a survival-based realityshow with the theme song, “Welcome to the Jungle?” Whether your child needs an accelerated curriculum or educational support, the boutique style learning experience offered at Kn.I.L.E. Prep Academy delivers. Here kids thrive while progressing through subjects at their own pace, making better grades, and scoring higher on the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. Betsy says, “We believe in building kids up through a customized, technology-enhanced curriculum and a cozy, supportive atmosphere. We’re currently accepting enrollment for students fourth through eighth grade for the 2012 school year, but space is limited! As a Back-to-School Special, we’re waiving the application fee for students who enroll before September 30th ($150 value).” If your child just needs a boost to get back on track, EduCoachNow can help any school-aged child start the school year right! for Representing the Victims “A courtroom is insulated,” says Fred Felcman, the First Assistant District Attorney for the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office. “Everyone’s dressed in a suit and on their best behavior, so it’s difficult to truly grasp the extent of what these people have done.” When Mr. Felcman was still a law student, he interned at the DA’s office. That’s when he knew he wanted to represent the people of the State of Texas, seeking justice against those judged continuing threats to society. He says, “Every case is bad, but the one that affected me the most was the capital murder case I tried in 2011, the Turner case. In that instance, we had a 911 from the twelveyear-old daughter in which she described the horror of watching her father kill her mother and grandmother and begged her grandmother not to die. Her grandmother died before the officers arrived on the scene

and her mother died shortly after. Listening to that call is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. When I give lectures to law students considering criminal law, this is the case I bring up as an example of the worst you may have to face.” For portions of five decades, Felcman has served as a capital murder litigator, beginning with the trial of James “Sugarman” Russell in 1978. He has been a leading capital murder litigator for the last thirty-five years, and with only five exceptions, the lead or active second chair prosecutor against every capital murder defendant tried during that time. By March of 2012, Felcman had been an active prosecutor in fifteen capital murder case, all of which he won and none of which were ever reversed on appeal. Since the infamous Turner case, he has tried two more cases. He says, “Getting justice for the victims is the best we can do. I’ve found in

this type of case, the jury is deeply moved... and Turner received the death penalty he richly deserved.” The prestigious Association of Government Attorneys in Capital Litigation is pleased to award Fred Felcman the Board of Directors’ Trial Award for Outstanding Advocacy in Capital Cases for 2011-2012. He is one of only four litigators to receive this national award, which was presented on July 25, 2012 at the Association’s annual conference. In nominating Felcman for the award, District Attorney John Healey wrote that “Felcman’s toughness is offset by the tenderness he feels towards victims and their families.” Fort Bend County Administration of Justice 281-342-3411 301 Jackson Street Richmond, TX 77469 www.co.fort-bend.tx.us

When a Child Tells a Big Secret I

magine finding the courage to tell a teacher or a friend that you need help...and realizing that was only the first step on a long, hard journey. Child Advocates of Fort Bend has worked to make the journey for a child in Fort Bend as safe and seamless as possible. Their Davis George Center is a one-stop shop for child abuse services that brings together the DA’s office, the County Attorney’s office, CPS, law enforcement agencies, CAFB staff members, child therapists, bilingual services, a Court Advocate, and coordinates CASA volunteers. They house two nationally affiliated programs - a Children’s Advocacy Center and a CASA program - under the same roof. When a child tells a trusted friend or family member about sexual abuse, they are brought to the safety of the Child Advocacy Center. Here they go through a forensic interview in a private room and their words are taped, so they don’t have to relive their story over and over again. Law enforcement or CPS may view the interview from a separate room. From the inviting waiting room filled with toys and occasional visits from friendly therapy dogs to the large “play therapy room” to the smaller group therapy rooms, children know that this is one place where they will always be safe. For children who have been removed from their homes and placed in foster care, CAFB trains specialized CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) volunteers who advocate for the child’s needs (therapy, tuturing, etc.) within the civil court system to make sure that the child’s best interests are always being served. CAFB Executive Director, Ruthanne Mefford says, “We have special programs targeted to infants, school-age children, and our ‘Wings’ program preparing teenagers for independence. I’m happy to say, thanks to our dedicated CASA volunteers, a higher percentage of kids we

serve go to college or technical schools than the national average. One adult really can make a difference in the life of a child!” More than thirty percent of CAFB’s funding comes from Special Events including the CASA Christmas Home Tour, Gala for the Children and community events like the Telfair Life “Charity of Your Choice” Walk scheduled for October 13th (register by October 9th at www. charityofyourchoicewalk. com.) Ruthanne says, “Volunteers help us run each of our events...and we always need more help! Our Christmas Home Tour scheduled for December 7-8, 2012 boasts a cost to expense ratio of less than 6%. Our Gala for the Children is one of the premier business entertainment and social events in the area and is attended by nearly 600 people.” For information about monthly tours, upcoming events, donation needs, and volunteer opportunities with Child Advocates of Fort Bend, visit www.cafb.org

Advocates are ordinary people doing extraordinary work “At the end of each fiscal year,” say Tina Roy, New Territory Women’s Association Treasurer, “we donate our excess funds to a local organization. This year we were pleased to be able to donate $1500 to Child Advocates of Fort Bend.” “As a mother, the things these children face breaks my heart,” says Mercedes Madaras, NTWA secretary. “Honestly, I joined the NTWA for the book club, but I’m so pleased that our dues support incredible organizations like CAFB...and that we combine social activities with community service.” The New Territory Women’s Association welcomes women from all over Fort Bend for friendship and community service. hen Christie Roberts, her husband Chris, and their thirteen-year-old Barrett moved into their new home a year and half ago, they knew the air conditioning was on its last leg. Sure enough, the downstairs unit went out their very first summer in the house! “I called a few companies and got quotes,” says Christie, “and All Out A/C had the best price. We were very happy with their service and the downstairs air conditioner...and we were thankful to get another year out of our upstairs

unit. This July, right on cue, it broke down...and I called All Out A/C right away.” To Christie’s dismay, the price of a new air conditioner had gone up. Just to be sure, she went ahead and got quotes from other local companies. She says, “All Out A/C still had the best price... and Bryan told me that most manufacturers change the pricing in June. If our air conditioner had broken down just a month earlier, it would have been a little cheaper...but All Out A/C gave us the best price in town! Just like before, the work was done quickly and on time. The team from All Out was very professional and super-easy to work with and they let us know what they were doing every step of the way. Bryan also gave us a two-year service agreement on our new unit, just like he did on the one the year before. With that we should get the air conditioners checked out twice a year to extend their life.” “Of course we weren’t excited to replace both of our air conditioners, but knowing that we have good, reliable equipment installed by a great local company gives me peace of mind. In fact, our neighbor is a contractor and he was really impressed with All Out’s work when he came over to look at the one they installed last summer. I wouldn’t be surprised if he contacted them, too!” If your bills keep climbing along with the temperature in your home, you need help from Chance Kamp and Bryan Bellamy’s team at All Out A/C and Heating, your local “Full System Replacement Specialists” and winner of the 2012 BBB Award of Excellence - Winner of Distinction. “Call us for a free estimate on a new system replacement or a second opinion,” says Bryan. “... and we offer new air conditioners like the ones we installed for Christie with better SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio)s to make it easier and more affordable to cool your home and save your paycheck...even in the hottest days of summer!”
