hen your back hurts so much you can’t pick up your granddaughter and it’s been months since you met your buddies for golf, you need a team that can kick that “OUCH” to the curb. At Sugar Land Spine and Disc, Drs. Stacy, Michele, and Nicole work together to make your back say “AHHH!” The bigger the “Ouch” the better the team you need…and you won’t find a more dedicated group with more personal attention anywhere in town. Dr. Stacy says, “All three of us graduated from Texas Chiropractic College (although at different times). We all enjoy the multitude of personalities and backgrounds we come into contact with every day, and we all take a deep, personal satisfaction in helping others improve their health…and their lives!” “We all entered this field so we could help people who are suffering,” says Dr. Michele says. “I always wanted to work in the medical field. While shadowing Dr. Stacy, I saw firsthand the benefits of chiropractic care and heard the life-changing stories of patients who’ve benefited from it. We’ve had patients who’d lost hope they’d ever find relief…and today their pain is completely gone…without narcotics or surgery!” Dr. Nicole says, “My senior year of high school, a driver ran a red light and hit -me headon. The following day my mother took me to the chiropractor for the first time. I was amazed at how much better I felt and how fast I was able to recover with chiropractic treatments. I also had migraine headaches since childhood and after treatment for the car accident the chiropractor treated my migraines…and I could stop taking the multitude of medications that I had been taking daily for years. Now that I’m a chiropractor, I love getting to know each person, as I decide what the best treatment options are for them.

I also like to educate my patients about what is going on and give them things to do at home so they can get better faster!” Who wouldn’t benefit from effective treatment that’s also non-invasive, non-narcotic, and non-surgical? Dr. Stacy says, “We help patients of all kinds and all ages…from infants with colic to kids with earaches to teenagers with sports injuries to adults with neck and back pain to seniors with bad hips or backs. We have a range of solutions gentle enough for a child, yet effective enough for the most chronic, stubborn pain. Now I’m taking certification classes in Dallas with other chiropractors and veterinarians so I can offer chiropractic care to your pets as well…and Dr. Michele and Dr. Nicole look forward to working towards their certifications, too. We want to help your whole family (including your four-legged ones) feel fantastic!” Doctors Stacy, Michele and Nicole want you to know: “Our goal is to instill a total awareness in our patients about the entire body…not just where it hurts! Call today to schedule your free consultation.”

Have You Found the Fun?

t might be some place you’d never think to look…a dental office! Little People’s Dentistry is such a blast that kids don’t want to wait six months to come back again. Dr. Bianca Sanchez says, “I have a great time taking care of kids’ teeth…and I want to make sure they have a great time too. My biggest compliment is when parents tell me their kids can’t wait to come see me again!” Kids know when a place is really “for them” and not just “for their own good.” Patients at Little People’s Dentistry sing and dance and wiggle. Maybe it makes giving an exam a little harder, but Dr. Sanchez wouldn’t have it any other way! She says, “I love watching kids light up when they discover our arcade of wall games or get a helium balloon from our clown dispenser. I have one patient who always jumps on the hopscotch, pauses at the fun house mirror, and laughs…until he gets into the chair. But afterwards he has so much fun playing and getting a treat that he only remembers the good parts. His mom says he’s asking when he can come back again!”

Parents wish they could get in on the quality care and straight-up fun at Little People’s Dentistry...like four different scents of gloves and a soda shop of fluoride flavors including cherry cheesecake—yum! Dr. Sanchez says, “I used to say that I don’t see patients taller than me…but now I have a few eight-yearolds who are as tall as I am. Even if a grownup stoops down, I still only see patients from ages 0-17. We really are just for kids...and I absolutely love my profession!” Dr. Sanchez says, “We’re excited to welcome Dr. G. Radford to our office. He’ll be offering orthodontic exams and braces at Little People’s Dentistry starting this June, but you can call now to make your appointment. Next month we’ll tell you more about his years of experience…and the funny way we first met!” Little People’s Dentistry 281-261-0020 4706 Riverstone Blvd., Suite 200 (behind Kohl’s) Missouri City, TX 77459 www.littlepeoplesdentistry.com

Who’s Looking Out for Mom? Sarah Warburton

r. Leslie Cohan of The Woman’s Place says, “Over and over I see moms put their own health at the bottom of their ‘to-do’ list. Remind the moms you know and love to schedule regular mammograms…and remember to stay on top of your own self-exams. A minute in the shower could be the wake-up call that saves your life!” “Breast cancer symptoms vary widely,” says Dr. Cohan. “You may notice lumps, swelling, or skin changes...but many breast cancers have no obvious symptoms at all. Self-exams are important, but don’t worry if your breast tissue feels lumpy, as long as that texture is the same throughout the breast. Warning signs that you should see a doctor include: a lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm that persists through your menstrual cycle, a mass or lump (even as small as a pea), a blood-stained or clear fluid discharge from the nipple, a change in the feel or appearance of the skin on the breast or nipple (dimpled, puckered, scaly,

or inflamed), redness of the skin or an area that is distinctly different from any other area on either breast. Sometimes, symptoms similar to those of breast cancer may be the result of an infection or a cyst. The only way to be sure is to see your doctor.” Women of all ages come first at The Woman’s Place. Dr. Cohan says, “Breast cancer affects moms, sisters, friends and daughters. At your regular gynecological exam, I’ll always do a clinical breast exam. We’ll talk about changes in your breasts, your family history, and when to start mammograms. In general, I recommend women have a baseline mammogram between the ages of thirty-five and forty, and then have an annual screening mammogram at age forty and beyond. However, if you have a family history of breast cancer or the inherited BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes should get an MRI and a mammogram every year. Anytime you have a worry or concern, know that I’m

here for you.” And as a breast cancer survivor, I understand. The Woman’s Place (affiliated with the Woman’s Hospital of Texas) 713-795-0349 16552 Southwest Freeway Sugar Land, TX 77479 www.womanshealthgroup.com

and stop my walking.” Thankfully, a little over a week after the procedure she returned to her walking routine. “My legs are looking so good it actually made me want to go out and exercise more!” “Dr. Baltazar and his staff were so friendly and supportive. He has a wonderful personality and a great bedside manner. I felt so comfortable with him, it felt like he was a brother – that I was a part of his family. I was sad at my last appointment because I would miss seeing him. He was a friend already.” Will Mary be wearing shorts this summer? “I already am!” Varicose veins are more than ugly lumps on the surface of your skin, they are an indication of improper blood flow and can cause pain, redness, itching, burning, and can lead to some critical medical conditions. Dr. Baltazar is covered by most insurance plans and offers free vein screenings during regular office visits. Summer is a time for shorts. If varicose veins are keeping you from being comfortable don’t wait, call today for your appointment.

et’s face it, summers in Texas can be hot, steamy and sticky. Shorts are almost a necessity for surviving those long summer months. What if, every time you wore shorts you were embarrassed because of extensive varicose veins?! Now add to that every night the varicose veins in your legs caused you pain and discomfort in the form of a stretching pulling sensation that you never got relief from. What would you do? When this happened to Mary Hernandez, she sought out the expertise of Dr. Ulises Baltazar. Dr. Baltazar is certified by the American Board of Surgery in both General and Vascular Surgery and is dedicated exclusively to the treatment of varicose veins. Although vascular surgery is a large field, Dr. Baltazar has chosen to focus exclusively on varicose veins to offer the expertise, the comfort and the best treatment possible for the Sugar Land area.

Recommended by her primary care physician, Mary immediately made her appointment. “During the initial consultation, I was nervous until Dr. Baltazar came into the room…then I immediately felt comfortable. He just has an air of knowledge and comfort about him.” Using an ultrasound machine Dr. Baltazar was able to diagnose that Mary had bleeding in the main valves of her legs and without treatment the bleeding would continue and her symptoms would worsen. “Throughout the actual procedure Dr. Baltazar told me everything he was doing and when he was going to do it. That made me feel a lot better and more at ease.” Recovery for Mary was very easy and she never needed the pain medication. Being an avid walker, at first she was afraid that the recovery time would get her out of her walking regime. “I’ve lost 60 pounds in the past year and I didn’t want to get out of the grove

ooking for smoother, tighter skin and a “just back from vacation” glow? You don’t have to rearrange your schedule around injections, extended recovery time, or surgery. At Kalologie Skincare and Medspa in Sugar Land, clients are discovering the ease and effectiveness of Thermage, a non-invasive, FDA-approved procedure featured on Dr. Oz’s “Ultimate Anti-Aging Show.” You can look rested, rejuvenated, and roll back the decades with the experts at Kalologie. Do you look as amazing as you feel? Manager Jennifer Blichmann, says, “As we age, our skin loses elasticity, so we develop sagging, looseness, and wrinkles. Thermage works by stimulating your body’s natural renewal of collagen using unique radiofrequency (RF) technology. It’s a single treatment that delivers an immediate difference… and results continue to develop naturally over time. Our clients and even our staff have loved seeing tighter smoother skin, softened lines and wrinkles, and increased lift and firmness.” Has a lifetime filled with the joys of work, family, and kids taken a toll on your skin? Maybe sun exposure, time, and gravity are to blame…but Thermage can turn back the clock and help you get your sexy back. Its amazing, anti-aging technology reduces the lines and

Sunglasses…. Fashion With a Purpose Sarah Warburton

C

ute swimsuits, stylin’ shorts, and sweet sundresses are in all the magazines, but one fashion accessory is a must-have for your look and your health! We asked Dr. Anh Doan of Missouri City’s Vision Source about sunglasses…the hottest trend for your eyes this year (and every year!). She says, “Anyone who spends time in the sun—athletes or fashionistas or infants—should wear sunglasses. Choose a frame that flatters your face or expresses your personality and lenses to protect your eyes from exposure to UV rays. Wearing the right kind of sunglasses makes you look stylish…and smart!” Even the coolest sunglasses have an important job...to protect your eyes from sun’s UV radiation like sun block protects your skin. Dr. Doan says, “Exposing your eyes to the sun’s rays without any protection can burn the delicate tissues of your eye and can increase your risk of developing cataracts and cancers of the eye. Long-term exposure also increases the risk of macular degeneration. Protect your eyes before you suffer any permanent damage. Any time you’re in the sun,

wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation.” Why settle for sunglasses that are only decorative when the protective ones are just as stylish? Dr. Doan says, “Wearing dark sunglasses without UV protection is as dangerous to your eyes as wearing only a self-tanner with no sun block is to your skin. Look for sunglasses that block at least 99% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. Frequent drivers may choose lenses that are also polarized to eliminate light that distorts vision. And if you need a prescription or protective sportseyewear, we can get those with UV protection and darkened lenses as well.” Stay cool this summer with the one fashion accessory that’s essential for your health. Vision Source has a wide selection of sunglasses to keep your eyes safe, stylish, and healthy at any age. As Dr. Doan says, “The sooner you start wearing UV protection, the better for the long-term health of your eyes. That’s one reason sunglasses never go out of style!”

Hitting Your Stride Again

Sarah Warburton obody wants to limp along the street while taking the dog for a walk or hobble to the mailbox in agony. If you’re suffering from pain in the middle of your foot, our lower extremity specialist Dr. Mark Vann, MD has the answers. He says, “Arthritis of the foot is a common problem…and the most common symptom is mid and rear foot pain. Together we’ll work through the options to help you hit

N

your stride again.” Out of the many different types of arthritis, most people are afflicted by osteoarthritis or “wear and tear” arthritis. Dr. Vann says, “Former athletes or people who participated in high-impact activities like running or jumping may develop osteoarthritis…and it usually worsens over time. Initially anti-inflammatory medication may control the pain, then we may try injections. Once those lose their effectiveness, we’ll consider surgical options. I know how debilitating the pain of arthritis can be, and we’ll work through each option step by step to find a solution.” Ready to make the leap? The most effective surgery for end-stage arthritis of the foot is fusion. Dr. Vann says, “Our primary concern is the elimination of pain and fusing the foot, while it does make the foot a little more stiff, it also eliminates pain effectively and helps most patients enjoy an active life again. After several weeks of rest to allow the foot to heal post-surgery, you should be able to resume your previous activities…without pain!” If pain has knocked you off your stride, come see Dr. Vann. He’ll put his extensive experience to work finding a solution for you!

Let All Health Break Loose!

O

ver a year ago a group of active citizens came to me with an idea to bring all the healthy opportunities in our area together: running clubs, cycling clubs, heath care advocates, excellent restaurants, and other supportive businesses. We created a committee made up of parents, athletes, medical experts, and industry representatives to put together a plan to promote wellness, raise awareness, and encourage activities that adopt healthier lifestyles for our community. We had public meetings and focus groups to find out the best way to make getting healthier easy and practical for people. Thanks to a huge up swell of support…we’re excited to launch the Healthy Monday campaign beginning in April with favorite area restaurants. Healthy Monday restaurants will offer good, better and best choices on their menus every Monday of the year. Mayor James Thompson has proclaimed Mondays as Healthy Monday through a formal proclamation. The official Proclamation will be displayed in our Healthy Monday restaurants. Visit www. shapeupsugarland.org for a complete list of participating restaurants and down-loadable coupons to use

in each Healthy Monday restaurant. For more information about the Healthy Monday campaign or to participate in the program contact me, Joy B. Dowell, at 281-844-4982 or email me at: rpjdd@aol.com. Under our Healthy Monday tab you’ll also find episodes of recipe author & The Today’s Show award winning chili cookoff winner, Rhonda Morrison’s cooking demonstrations; and “Ask The Dietician” column with Laura Laine, M.Ed, R.D, and L.D. of Sophia Grace Center. Watch for upcoming information about SUSL’s Dancing For Dollars Dance Marathon. Dance marathons started as a popular fad in the 1920s and 1930s, when organized dance endurance contests attracted people to compete to achieve fame or win monetary prizes. Dancing is one of the ways my husband, Dennis, and I enjoy exercising and having fun at the same time. Plan to have lots of fun! I invite you to visit our web site often to check out all kinds of healthy activities in our own backyard and to share activities that you enjoy doing in Sugar Land. I hope you are doing something healthy for yourself today!

The Smartest Celebration in Town Sarah Warburton t LearningRx, kids can have fun while strengthening one of the most important parts of their body…their brains! Clara M. Samuelson, Owner of LearningRx in Sugar Land, says, “We’re thrilled to celebrate our second year in our new location here in Sugar Land. Seeing our kids do so well makes every day a party! We want to thank all the trainers, parents, and especially the kids who helped us earn the honor of being the Number One LearningRx Reading Center nationwide!” Celebrate your smarts this summer with a trip to LearningRx. Clara says, “Kids think our exercises are fun—like games—but they’re designed to strengthen parts of the brain. Instead of tutoring a child in one specific subject, we actually teach the brain how to learn across the board. Working one on one with a trainer makes kids feel special and gets results. Our ‘brain training’ unlocks skills like comprehension, logic and reasoning, word recognition, and memorization… making subjects like math and reading easier and more enjoyable.”

Parents and kids love LearningRx. One pleased parent writes: “I want to thank you again for everything you did for our son. I bless the day I ran into Learning Rx’s website and had the conversation with Clara. She read my mind with our concerns about our child…and at the same time she listed everything she could do to help him. Will (the LearningRx trainer) was our next blessing. The way he connected with our son and made him feel special through encouragement has left a footprint in his young life.” “I also want to thank you, for all of your patience with my youngest during our waiting time. Teaching Should be Individualized Not Standardized Sarah Warburton ocal educator Carol Appelbaum says, “That’s exactly why my husband, Marty, and I started The Turning Point Academy. In elementary school my daughter waited for others to grasp a subject or watched as kids acting up took much of her teachers’ time and attention. By middle school, we were ready for a change. Twenty years ago my husband and I founded the world-renowned teacher training company, www.atiseminars.org that now trains over 50,000 teachers annually…so we had a clear idea of the kind of educational and social setting we wanted for our child. Unfortunately, it just didn’t exist… until now. I hope someday Turning Point Academy will be a model for how all children are educated.” Looking for an alternative to outdated models, traditional curriculums, and “mandated timeline” education? TPA uses a superior, easy-to-learn, technologyenhanced curriculum and DOES NOT HAVE HOMEWORK.

L

Here, motivated students discover how to learn and retain knowledge for long term success. Carol says, “We focus on content mastery as well as study strategies, SAT/ACT test taking skills, leadership skills, speech making. We teach success principles of Dale Carnegie and Jack Canfield, and life-skills like goal-setting, planning, and mentoring.” “An individualized pace helps our students make better grades, score higher on the PSAT, SAT, and ACT, and qualify for college scholarships. Requiring school work be completed at school means our students have NO HOMEWORK and more time for after school activities like sports, scouting, or volunteering. Team

sports available to public school students are also available to our students. TPA understands what colleges are looking for… high GPA’s, SAT/ACT scores, leadership, and community service. TPA knows the importance of earning college scholarships and we strive to ensure every graduate has academic scholarship offers. We provide one-on-one guidance through the college application and academic scholarship process.” Carol states, “We would not recommend something that we have not chosen for our own daughter. She entered TPA two years ago in 6th grade; today she is taking 10th grade honors courses. She is now two years ahead of her peers enrolled in traditional schools. With no homework, she has time to play competitive sports and pursue other interests. At The Turning Point Academy, we’ve restructured education to be more effective, more efficient, and more enjoyable.” Call today and find out what an individualized approach would look like for your son or daughter. The Gift of Time Donnielle Carter

e all have hectic lives and hectic schedules. At the end of the day do you wish you’d spent more time cleaning your house or more time having fun? This is why Joan Adams has been having Professional Maid Service clean her house for over a year now. As a matter of fact she enjoys a clean house so much she often gives Professional Maid Service as a gift! “So many people dread cleaning their house, I want to give them a gift that gives them peace of mind and more free time to do something they really enjoy.”

So many people dread cleaning their house, I want to give them a gift that gives them peace of mind and more free time to do something they really enjoy Professional Maid Service’s number one priority is making their customers happy and giving them a thoroughly cleaned house to relax in. Perhaps no one knows this better than the woman at the heart of the company, Customer Service Representative Connie Gillick. Joan says, “Connie is such a doll. She is so warm, pleasant and personable. You talk to her about

something and you know it’s going to get done. You are instantly at ease.” Joan’s original reservation about having a cleaning service was the need to trust a stranger in her home. Professional Maid Service knows this can be a concern, that’s why their staff is bonded and insured. Joan said, “The ladies that come to clean my house are the sweetest and most trustworthy people I have met. I have no worries.” Wondering what to give your mother, wife or sister this Mother’s Day? Take a suggestion from Joan and give a clean house from Professional Maid Service! “With the long hours people work we lose our family time. Paying for a cleaning service is worth every cent so you can have that time back in your life.” Joan’s clean house has even removed friction from her household, “They don’t even know that they are like counselors.” Call Connie today to schedule your free in-home estimate and let Professional Maid Service give you the time and the clean house you’ve been dreaming of. Don’t Live a Life of Pain

Becca Bragg skiing accident left eighteen-year-old Jason Schell with a spiral fracture of his femur that resulted in eight reconstructive surgeries. He says, “I had just been accepted to Texas A&M University and it took four years before I could walk without assistance. After the orthopedist had taken me as far as he could, I still suffered from excruciating back pain. He recommended that I see a chiropractor. Within a few months that chiropractor relieved my pain and gave me back my life. At the time my major at A&M was premed in Biomedical Sciences, but I decided to become a chiropractor instead. And I’ve never forgotten how lucky I was to have doctors who worked together on my care.” If you need flexibility in your back and neck, you need an office with a flexible, multidisciplinary approach. At The Houston Spine and Rehabilitation Center’s Sugar Land office, Dr. Schell D.C. offers diagnostic exams, chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, and a wide range of physiotherapy. A Genuine Miracle

hen you see a product that is used by Disney and Hilton, when you hear experts talking about it on the Today Show, HGTV, the diy network, and This Old House, it’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s hype. For the inside scoop on Miracle Method...we asked local owners, Jonee and Paul Barnett. Jonee says, “Paul and I are just down-to-earth, genuine folks and we make a great team. He supervises the installations and I do the sales. We live with Miracle Method in our home, so we really know the product inside and out. I’m not going to tell you it’ll change your life, but it sure will change your kitchen or bathroom…without the time, mess, or expense of remodeling. That’s a miracle I can recommend!” What makes the Miracle Method so miraculous? Miracle Method transforms porcelain, ceramic, laminate, acrylic, or cultured marble counters…without ripping them out. After your original counters are cleaned, the scratches and chips repaired and grout lines sealed, you can customcreate the perfect shade for your finish,

choose a finish that looks like natural stone, or request a “color match” to coordinate with your décor. Switching up a big surface like a countertop and backsplashes makes a big impact. Not only that, but the Miracle Method saves up to 75 percent over the cost of removing and replacing your old cabinets. Less time, less dust, and less expense means you’ll enjoy dramatic changes…without any drama! As a small business owner, Jonee understands the importance of the bottom line. She says, “After years in the corporate world, starting our own business was a dream come true. Honestly, I really love doing sales, especially meeting and chatting with people. Call us for your free estimate and I’ll come out and show you what we can do. Over the last nine years, we’ve found the Miracle Method is so easy and the results are so beautiful…people do call it a genuine miracle. Give us just a few days and we’ll give you a kitchen or bathroom that looks like new!”

Their Future Starts Today

T

he road to success starts early for today’s students…and one local non-profit is pulling together to give the kids in our community a boost. Pastor Ed Lee says, “At the Mosaic Learning Center, a faith-based after-school tutorial and mentorship program, we’re helping kids get the strong start they need for success in school and in life. Equipping these children with skills and confidence today will make a difference in the future of our country.” When Pastor Lee and his congregation saw the drop-out numbers for our community, they asked, “What can we do to stem the tide?” He says, “Studies show that mastering good habits at an early age makes kids more confident learners and more willing to resist peer pressure and work to succeed. We developed a four-pronged approach to the problem. First, the Mosaic Learning Center offers after-school homework assistance, so kids get the immediate satisfaction of seeing good results. Then we offer tutoring in math and reading with exercises and drills so they’ll master the

material for the long term. Thirdly, we offer faith-based mentorship. This character-based approach is essential. If children understand that a higher being cares about them and they see firsthand what a difference that makes in the lives of adults who also love and support them…they’ll have the inner strength of character to get through any challenge. Finally, we offer workshops and support for parents to help them with life

skills like making good financial decisions and creating the kind of home environment that’s conducive to learning.” Mosaic Learning Center continues to evolve. This summer they will offer an enrichment program June 6th through July 29th. The hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, mornings will consist of tutoring in math and reading while afternoons will be open to arts and crafts, karate, dance and music. Each Friday is reserved for field trips to various local cultural attractions such as the Children’s Museum, the Health Museum, Moody Gardens, and more. private reception was sponsored by UpClose Magazine to benefit Sugar Land Area Artists (SLAA) on March 30, 2011 to invite community leaders to dream along with them about a place “Where Art Lives.” SLAA is a nonprofit group made up of about 100 local artists whose talents include nationallyrecognized artists as well as beginners. Mayor James A. Thompson introduced SLAA’s President, Jan Hall, and thanked her and SLAA for contributing to cultural development in the Sugar Land area while City Council Members: Thomas Abraham, Jacqueline Baly Chaumette, Donald L. Smithers, Donald G. Olson, Russell Jones

and Michael Schiff showed their support. Other dignitaries in the crowd included Precinct 1 Commissioner, Richard Morrison and Nancy Olson, wife of Congressman Pete Olson. Jan said, “We are stepping up our activities to increase public awareness of how visual arts can and does contribute to the cultural fabric of our community.” SLAA is expanding their outreach program; their next project is a student art exhibit at Whole Foods in May. Gina Pizzini, Publisher of UpClose Magazine, had this to say about their sponsorship, “Thanks to Karen Shaw calling me at just the right time; I had an ‘up close’ view of the community that makes up SLAA. They support artists and the artist in all of us. Our Sugar Land neighbors need a local venue where art and artists can hang out.” Sugar Land Area Artists is a visual art society committed to the enhancement of the fine arts in Fort Bend communities through art exhibits, competitions, education and scholarships. Keeping Mom Proud Sarah Warburton

hen we talked with Joe Rangel of Ameristar Roofing, we learned some sad news. Joe’s mother, Sonya Parvaneh, passed away on February 26 of this year at age 64. Born August 7, 1946 in San Antonio, TX, she lived in Richmond for over 35 years. She retired from Amoco after working there over twenty years and eventually came to work in the office of Ameristar Roofing. Joe says, “Mom always showed everyone a smiling face and she thought of everyone as a friend. It’s important to me that our community knows I treat every customer like I would treat my own family. I miss my mother every day and I promise I’ll continue to do the kind of work that would make her proud.” Joe’s mom raised him and his siblings right here in Fort Bend, just like he and his wife are doing with their own kids…so he knows the kind of roofs he’ll find all over our community. He says, “When you need a new roof, we’ll help you find one that will protect your home, its value, and your own back pocket. CertainTeed’s new Energy Star®rated Landmark Solaris™ shingles are solar reflective and look like traditional asphalt. They’re durable and will give your air conditioner a hand in keeping your house cool… for savings on your electric bill.” How many of us now have older parents who’ve lived in the same home for decades? Joe says, “Used to be that homes were built with wooden shakes or shingles…but today converting a wood shake/shingle roof to an

asphalt/composition roof makes good sense for your bottom line. If you’re doing a complete re-decking, we’ll use a Radiant barrier to block ninety-five percent of the sun’s heat from heating your insulation and your home, so you’ll save money on your air conditioning costs.” You don’t want to worry that someone will take advantage of your parents. Joe says, “Our guys never lose sight of the fact that the roof we’re working on protects your family. At Ameristar, we don’t want a single cent from you until we’ve done the job right. We’ve been in this community for a long time, and we’re always happy to provide references. We also offer you CertainTeed’s 3 Star, 4 Star, and 5 Star Extended Warranties because our guys have earned the elite certification of CertainTeed Quality Master Installers… something only one percent of roofers nationwide can offer. In every case, inspection, repair, or replacement; we want your recommendation because of our reputation!” “When you call us out to check on a roof for yourself or your parents,” says Joe, “remember, we’re there to help. We’ll come do a free, on-site evaluation. Go ahead and ask us any question you like… that’s what we’re here for. My mother loved living here with her family and friends in Fort Bend, and I’ll always do my best for this community we call home. ” Ameristar 281-238-4230 3821 F.M. 359 Richmond, TX 77406 www.ameristarroofing.com

When to Call a Friend

Sarah Warburton hen you’re in trouble, you pick up the phone to call a friend, a relative, or a neighbor, right? You need someone you can count on in a pinch. At Alan’s Plumbing you get a family-owned, local business that delivers professional, friendly service you can count on…no matter what your plumbing problems are. When you pick up the phone, you’ll hear the friendly voices of Jennifer or Alan’s mother Lena. Her three sons, Alan, Brian and Chris, have built up a plumbing business that helps families all over Fort Bend. Alan’s wife Jennifer says, “When you call us, you’ll know who’s coming out to help you. We’ve got three teams: Chris and my son Beau, Brian and another of our talented plumbers, Zack, or Alan. These guys work well together, they’re on-time and courteous, and they’ll get you the plumbing help you need.” Think about how many times you’ve called your parents for a helping hand…could they use a little help now? If your parents are still living in the same home where they raised you, little problems like dripping faucets, running toilets, a temperamental garbage disposal, or old hot water heaters may be piling up. Call Alan’s Plumbing and one of their three highly-trained teams will check out their old pipes, inspect an ancient hot water heater...even install some grab bars in those deep tubs or a seat in the shower for extra safety. If mom spends her days in the flowerbed, take a look at the hose bib up against the house. Leaking water there can back up into the wall and cause structural damage over time. Fixing little

You don’t have to hit the shops for a solution—we’ve got the real deal right here with the Snore Guard.” All the undereye cream and double lattes in the world won’t give you the same glow as a good night’s sleep. Dr. Lomonte says, “Throwing money at the symptoms of snoring is just throwing money down the drain. The FDA-approved Snore Guard is an extremely effective, reasonably priced solution to snoring and mild sleep apnea. It has to be fitted by a dentist…but it takes only one visit with no needles, no drugs, no x-rays, lab work or pain. After a few weeks of uninterrupted, blissful sleep, your friends will want to know your secret. Tell them it’s as simple as getting your beauty

sleep…and the Snore Guard makes it easy!” You’ll get way more bang for your beauty buck with a good night’s sleep and a healthy smile. Name That Smell

N

Sarah Warburton obody wants to play “name that awful smell” in their own house. One local man, Javier Avellan of Reach Local, says, “Around October, 2009, when the temperature started to swing hot one day and cool the next, we smelled a stink in our house. We looked everywhere, wondering if it was a dead rat or something, but when things got really hot outside and the A/C was on all the time…the smell went away; therefore we didn’t address the issue. That was a bad mistake, as the smell came back at the same time in 2010. By then, Wanda from All Out A/C had joined my BNI (Business Network International) group, so I asked her advice. She said, ‘Does it smell like dirty socks?’ and I knew she recognized what was going on.” “You won’t believe the hoops All Out A/C will jump through to get to the bottom of the problem. Turns out, we had mold all throughout our system, so Wanda sent a team out to clean all our ducts and we replaced one of the air conditioning units. We’d only been in the house eight years, and one of the original units quit working and it was out of warranty. We went with a Payne that was bigger, came with a better warranty at a reasonable price and Wanda set us up with interest-free financing. Instead of replacing the upstairs air conditioner, we went with a media filter and a UV light to kill bacteria and mold before it gets into the system.” “Not only is the smell gone,” says Javier, “but the entire experience was absolutely wonderful. Chance Kamp and Bryan Bellamy have really assembled an amazing team. I just wish Wanda wasn’t a Steelers

ome things can’t be taught, they have to be experienced. Being respectful is an easy lesson when you are shown respect. At International Preparatory School, students, parents and faculty all benefit from the atmosphere that is warm, inviting, and respectful of others. Owner/Administrator Susan McMahon gives credit for the school’s success to her talented staff, some of who have worked with her for almost twenty years. She says, “They are extraordinary people and I feel very fortunate to have them here. As individuals they have unique talents and abilities, while collectively they make a powerful team.” She sees herself not so much a leader, but rather a co-creator with her highly qualified, competent, caring staff. At IPS the emphasis is placed on the personal achievement and self discipline of each student. The school is based on the premise that students and teachers will achieve goals together, individual success is viewed as everyone’s success. As one parent put it, “Their top priority is the kids.
