Member’s Voice The greatest part of NICA is the Membership! The Member’s Voice influences where the organization is headed and what it can improve, especially when it comes to which benefits are being used and which events people are interested in attending. The NICA Office has been continuing their survey of responses from Renewing Members. This month, we focused on our Concession Members. Charles Duquette, Crystal Fantasies out of Largo, Florida, stated that he jumped on pretty quickly (actually joined in 1994) as he felt that it was an organization needed by Concessionaires. According to Charles, it seems that with the ongoing regulations and fees today “that every one is in your pocket.” Charles generally plays inside the expo halls at his events, but he does play at least two outside locations in his tent. He has an RV, but has used the CLC Lodging / CheckInn Direct card, especially when visiting other events. He enjoys reading the NICA News, as it helps to keep him up to date, and he feels it does a good job of that. “NICA is definitively geared to the Food Concessionaire, as they are the largest amount of members, but I am still a member as it has benefits for me.” After 40 years in the business, he is now cutting back to only five spots a year, but he still works the “Wagon Wheel Flea Market” in Florida during the winter, which he has done for over 35 years. Ken Nunn, Pet ID Tags from Hudson, Florida, ranks his involvement with NICA as a three out of ten, only because he is in straight sales. He joined NICA when it first started in 1993 and has been a member ever since. He said that he continues to support NICA because “it gives us a seat at the table.” He did not have the background in this business as he worked as a city fireman in Denver, Colorado. He likes NICA and he feels it is a good organization for Concessionaires. Ken has made use of the Ford Fleet benefit twice and described it as “great!” He was also familiar with the Sherwin Williams and AutoZone benefits. Ken defined a lot of straight sales people as “we pay our rent and

leave us alone kind of people.” He said he is “old school” when it comes to the NICA News, as he wants to be able to turn the page in person — not on the computer. He enjoys seeing pictures of places where he does not go to see trends and what is happening elsewhere. He also enjoys the human interest stories such as Dr. Vegetable’s stolen trailer and the tale of how it was tracked down and returned. He also pointed out that the straight sales people are usually a two person operation and it is hard to get out and visit as much as others since they are, hopefully, “too busy doing their own thing.” Richard Allen, Sierra Korn Enterprises of Oroville, California, commented that his relationship with NICA “has been great” even though he has only been a member for three and a half years. He stated that the NICA Sysco Marketplace has been able to give him “great service.” He also makes use of the Coca-Cola and Pepsi benefits and was aware of several of the others, but he admitted that he had not made much use of them. He thinks the NICA News does a good job of showing what goes on

Thoughts from a This month’s Statement of Communications & Management Philosophy is from Jeff Thornberry, CCE, Pristine Systems, Inc. DBA Gadgets and Neat Stuff: “Doing well by doing good.” “A rising tide raises all ships.” “Treat everyone around you well, including the janitor; they might end up being Fair Manager one day!” My crew calls these sayings “Jeff-isms” and I have a bunch of them. I do not claim to have invented any of them; I simply use them to project and reinforce my philosophy for business and life. I feel that for my company to grow and succeed, I must use every opportunity to communicate my vision for what is fundamentally important to my organization. “Jeff-isms” are but one way for me to project the code of ethics that I hold dear. I believe that we choose how we will conduct our business and that we have influence over the environment around us. This influence impacts the way people behave and treat one Jeff Thornberry, CCE another. Therefore, by setting high expectations for myself and Pristine Systems, Inc. DBA those around me, I positively shape the industry and the quality of Gadgets and Neat Stuff the lives that I touch. My enterprise becomes a channel to project my values and strong code of ethics to a larger audience. I believe CCE Earned in 2015 that by taking this “high road,” I position myself and my company for success! ▲

Don’t Delay! The CCE deadline is quickly approaching on October 1, 2016! Celebrates

Long Term Partnership with NICA Tina Walker, First Data When NICA decided to add a merchant solution to its member benefit program, the NICA Board wanted to be sure that the provider would be able to service its members nationwide, support extensive hours, offer competitive pricing, and have a point of contact that fully understood a Concessionaire’s business needs. I knew that First Data was a guaranteed fit based on service and support needs and this was an exciting industry that I absolutely wanted to be part of. In Spring of 2009, the Board of Directors embraced my enthusiasm to want to learn more. Past President Tom Sattler, CCE took the time to walk me through the Florida Strawberry Festival fairgrounds. It was there that he and other Concessionaires explained the environmental conditions that point-of-sale hardware would need to stand-up to, the consumer traffic impacts wireless technology would have to adapt to, and how important it would be to have a representative that was familiar with their members and cared for their industry. The more I listened, the more I learned that though the Concession Industry was competitive and demanding, it was also one big family. Over time this, NICA’s family has become my family. I care for and appreciate each NICA Member for their support, the passion for their operation, and their independent views on business concerns. My love for this Industry has

Tina Walker giving a presentation during NICA’s Member Benefits Rally at the Florida Strawberry Festival

The next generation of Concessionaires starting early on First Data’s Clover point-of-sale system

helped me fight for and win extremely competitive pricing strategies, lower hardware costs, and software support needs as industry demands have changed. The NICA partnership is one of the most successful partnerships within the First Data organization because of the personal relationship we have built over the years. It is very important for members to understand that the NICA partnership is its own individual First Data relationship. First Data has many alliance partners and independent agents across the nation such as Bank of America, Restaurant Depot, and Sam’s Club; however, to receive NICA benefits, you must go through my NICA partner program directly. The NICA program benefits include drastically reduced processing rates, no monthly minimum nor early termination fees to support seasonal demands, and secure EMV hardware solutions that are below standard First Data price. Though you may be signed up with a different First Data program, you can still reach out to me to learn how to switch to the NICA program. Should you have any question or want to learn more, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at any time. In closing, my purpose is to be genuinely concerned about my clients and help them grow their businesses. Thank you all for your continued support! ▲ September 2016 NICA News

NICA Sysco Marketplace

Program Updates Rey O’Day, West Council Executive Manager

Each November, Sysco, NICA, and Source1 Purchasing review the NICA Sysco Marketplace program, which is free to NICA Members. During our 2015 meeting we all agreed to accomplish some very important goals that we believed would improve our 2016 outcomes. Recently, in Del Mar, we met again to evaluate our progress, celebrate some completed goals, and check our outcomes. The Sysco/NICA Operating Companies (OpCo) Execution Playbook and the NICA Sysco Marketplace Program Playbook have both been completed! Both are based on input from the professionals (yes, that includes you) using the program. The first is designed to serve as a guide for OpCo’s to effectively service NICA Members. The second is designed to serve as a guide to NICA Members to effectively enroll in this program and understand the working relationship with Sysco. The NICA Sysco Marketplace Program provides quality products through Sysco, at nationally negotiated and leveraged pricing for NICA Concessionaires. The NICA Sysco Marketplace Program Playbook is available as a printed booklet and online at nica.source1purchasing.com. It provides an overview of the program and suggests the tools and resources that help to make the Sysco relationship work successfully. Amy Davis Smith, Sysco Senior Director of

Eric Campbell: I have been a Concessionaire since I was able to walk and a NICA Member for 20-plus years. NN: What made you join NICA? EC: I joined NICA to be a part of the Concession fellowship and to be able to get to know other Concessionaires and share “tools of the trade.”

The Northeast Council Visits

Delaware State Fair Jessica Castro, Northeast Council Coordinator

On Friday, July 22, 2016, Jessica Castro, NICA’s Northeast Regional Council Coordinator, attended the Delaware State Fair in Harrington, Delaware. While there, Jessica spent time meeting with members, visiting old friends and checking out the fairgrounds. Although the day was hot and humid, it was great to see the crowds at night. While attending the State Fair, we also signed up two New Members. A big NICA welcome goes out to Henry Mitchell, owner of Amy’s Sweet Treats, and Matthew Soulier, who owns Bradley Taffy. Both Henry and Matthew are from Connecticut and participate in many Northeast Fairs, Festivals, and Rvents. Several years ago, Henry was a member, but left the organization. After learning about some of our new benefits, he has decided to rejoin our Association, and it is great to have him back! While visiting, Henry said, “I’m happy to rejoin an active organization that will benefit my business. I look forward to seeing where we are headed.” Jessica also had the opportunity to meet Eddie Porcelli, owner and operator of Spaghetti

Fun-tastic Fair Facts! The Delaware State Fair, as it is known today, began as an idea quietly conceived around a potbelly stove in the Harrington railroad station in 1919. The drive of many residents helped formulate the Kent and Sussex County Fair in January 1920; a month later, 30 acres were purchased for $6,000 and helped to formulate the layout of the track and grandstand. With plans for exhibits in seven categories, the first Fair opened on time on July 27, 1920 and continued for four days. Today, the Kent and Sussex County Fair is now known as the Delaware State Fair and boasts attendance of over 307,000. Every year the Fair continues its tradition of being “Bigger and Better than Ever.”* *Adapted from www.delawarestatefair.com/p/Info/About-Us/217

Eddie Porcelli, Spaghetti Eddie’s, Jessica Castro, Northeast Council Coordinator, and New Member Henry Mitchell, Amy’s Sweet Treats

Eddie’s. Eddie has been in the Fair Industry most of his life, and has participated in fair and events along the East Coast. After hearing about some of the initiatives for the Northeast Council this year, Eddie enthusiastically offered his commitment to the Council, and has joined as our fourth member. When asked what drew him to the Council, Eddie said, “I want to be a part of a committee that gets things done.” Welcome to the Northeast Regional Council, Eddie! The successful trip to the Delaware State Fair also included introductions to Concessionaires who were not familiar with NICA, and we are continuing to talk with them about joining our Association. Getting the word out and being visible are crucial to recruiting New Members, and this trip accomplished both. Jessica also used her trip to promote the Northeast Regional Council’s NICA Rally, to be held on September 13, 2016 from 6:30-10:30 PM, in West Springfield, Massachusetts, prior to the opening of The Big E. The event will be an opportunity to connect, recruit members, visit with our new Executive Director Michelle Card and have some fun. We are planning a raffle and additional entertainment as well. For more information, or for sponsorship opportunities, please reach out to Jessica, at our brand new email address, NortheastNICA@hotmail.com. We look forward to seeing you as the season continues! ▲ September 2016 NICA News

Rodger Smith, Vice President of Business Development for Sysco, and NICA have been in conversation about where the best place is for this NICA Master Distribution Agreement within the Sysco organization.
