welcome to our WONDER When you visit Niagara Falls, you’re struck by the wonder of it all. Where in the world does the water come from? And where does it go? How high are the Falls, how wide, how deep? How much water rushes over the mighty cataracts, minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour, day-by-day, and season-by-season? You’ll be fascinated to discover the answers to these questions, and more because Niagara Falls continues non-stop, just like the adventures that await year-round. You’ll fall for Niagara in all seasons – winter, spring, summer and autumn. Your journey begins with the rushing waters the Native North Americans called “Onguiaahra” or “Thundering Waters.” Its breathtaking views are highlighted by misty magic and sun streaked rainbows that arch over the Niagara Gorge during the daytime, and illuminated after dark by powerful spotlights that pierce the night. Both visuals offer a different perspective on the natural wonder you believe you have come to know. Seeing the sights and the lights of the magnificent Falls is only the beginning. There is so much to experience in Niagara, it is naturally ‘One Wonder After Another’.

a hint of History An excursion to Niagara Falls offers more than you could imagine. Niagara Falls has often been called “the world’s most famous address.” While the Falls is certainly our most visited natural attraction, the rest of Niagara is a rich, varied, and rewarding experience, too. Niagara Falls, and the surrounding Niagara Region, have evolved and grown into one of the world’s foremost travel destinations. Millions of visitors a year agree! Niagara’s fascinating history and rich, cultural heritage is the foundation for many interesting discoveries today. Our past sets the tone for our present, and you will find many places to see and things to do. Niagara’s past will keep a history buff captivated. There are archeological remnants of the people who lived in the Niagara area thousands of years ago. Villages from the ancient Iroquois culture reveal an agricultural subsistence, a relationship with the land that even now characterizes much of Niagara. European explorers and missionaries arrived in the New World at the beginning of the 17th century, but did not make their homes here until the War of 1812. This was a turning point in our history, when the fledgling United States army fought British Loyalists who fled America for the new lands that would become Canada. Niagara’s historic sites, battlefields, museums and military re-creations are a memorable journey into the past. History in Niagara is present for anyone who looks with an appreciative eye to times gone by.

Did You Know? How much water runs over the Falls? The Horseshoe Falls (Canada) is considered to be the most impressive of the three falls that make up Niagara Falls. It receives approximately 90% of the water of the Niagara River that goes over Niagara Falls. The combined water flow over the Falls (April to October, daytime) is 2,832 cubic metres per second/750,000 US gallons per second.

Did You Know? Do the Falls freeze in winter? Neither Niagara Falls nor the Niagara River freezes in winter. However, in 1848, the waters stopped flowing over Niagara's famous cliff when the Niagara River was plugged temporarily at the mouth of the river in Fort Erie, Ontario. During the winter months, an ice bridge forms at the base of Falls and over portions of the Niagara River below the Falls.

an exquisite EVENING Delectable international cuisine is the cornerstone of Niagara Falls fine dining, and the Niagara wine region lends a regional flair and complement to the diverse options. Elegant Fallsview dining and Niagara wine bars are as abundant as family-style Niagara restaurants and casual pubs and grills. Whether you desire Asian or Indian, contemporary American or seafood, the world awaits in Niagara Falls fine dining. Looking for a dinner with a view? Skylon Tower’s Revolving Dining Room, Edgewater’s Tap & Grille, Terrapin Grille, Coco’s Terrace Steakhouse, The Watermark and 17 Noir are just a few that will astound all of the senses! A spectacular backdrop of the Falls perfectly complements the gourmet cuisine. Pamper yourself tonight at one of Niagara’s fine dining establishment.

Did You Know? Why is Niagara famous for wines? Within a 30 minute drive of Niagara Falls, you will find an impressive array of Niagara vineyards. The region is home to numerous wineries, many of which produce award-winning wines, including the region's famous ice wines. Wine-producing grapes only grow in two geographical belts around the globe – one just north of the equator, and one a little bit south of it. These are the only areas with the right mixture of sun, rain, and temperature. Niagara sits on similar latitude to the famous Bordeaux Region of France and parallel with California‘s Napa Valley – making the Niagara climate ideal.

Did You Know? How many people have gone over the Falls in a barrel? There have been a total fifteen people that have attempted to go over the Horseshoe Falls in a barrel or makeshift craft, since 1901. Of those that intentionally went over the Falls, five died. Two people (Steven Trotter and David Munday) went over the Falls twice and lived to tell their tales.

golf & outdoor Adventure There are several places to see the Falls up close and personal – from downstream along the river boardwalk or through the Niagara Glen, the beauty of the Falls is revealed in all its splendour. Or take in a spectacular aerial view of the Falls by helicopter. Rim tours and glen hikes, geology and nature walks all provide exciting and different excursions. Hiking and biking paths abound but one of the best is the Niagara River Recreation Trail. The trail winds past places of historical and cultural interest, wineries, vineyards and beautiful scenery. Niagara contains an extensive system of rivers and lakes for swimming, sport fishing, water skiing, leisure boating, sailing, canoeing and kayaking. There’s jet boating along the Niagara River for the adventurous, and of course, the famous boat cruise that takes passengers on a wet ride near the base of the Falls. One of the reasons outdoor activities thrive year round in Niagara is golf. Tee off at one of more than 40 excellent courses in the Niagara area. We’re enjoying a golfing boom, and with one of the longest golf seasons in Canada, Niagara has become Ontario’s golf destination of choice. The Niagara Region has one of the highest concentrations of golf courses in North America and many consistently earn high ratings from some of the world’s top golfers and major golf publications. Niagara offers an excellent selection of quality courses, ranging from the private club to the semi-private and public to executive par 3’s.

Jams, jellies, preserves, syrups, condiments, dips and sauces – all made with local ingredients like peaches, grapes, pears, apples, tomatoes, herbs, berries and more. Unique souvenir stores are sprinkled across the region, with such Canadiana paraphernalia as Eskimo carvings, maple syrup products, native crafts, Royal Canadian Mounted Police gifts and clothing and accessories. And before you leave, visit a Duty Free Shop, where you can stock up on brand name merchandise like wine, liquor, beer, tobacco, fragrances, jewelry, china, crystal, clothing, sunglasses, specialty foods, gifts and more, all at discounts of up to 50%, and no taxes.

Did You Know? Why is Niagara Falls called “The Honeymoon Capital of the World”? Niagara Falls received its reputation as the "Honeymoon Capital of the World" when the daughter of Aaron Burr, the 3rd Vice-President of the United States, chose to honeymoon in Niagara Falls in 1801. A few years later, Jerome Bonaparte, Napoleon's brother, and his bride did the same and, thus, a tradition was born. Now over 50,000 Niagara honeymoons are arranged each year.

Did You Know? What is the foam in the water below the Falls? The foam in the water is a natural phenomenon. It is actually calcium carbonate which comes from the mist as it evaporates while going over the Falls. The calcium carbonate mixes with decaying algae to create the foam. As it moves downstream, it will remix with the water and disappear. This foam is also present around the Whirlpool.

Where is the Niagara River deepest? The deepest spot in the Niagara River is just below the Horseshoe Falls. The water is roughly 170 ft (52 m) deep. The erosion from the tumbling water has gouged into the river bed, creating a depression almost as deep as the falls are tall.
