Created by NextD in 2005 to help explain the changing landscape of design thinking from a process scale perspective, this diagram is one of several that can be found in NextDesign Geographies. Community based research done by NextD showed strong indication that much of graduate design education had not yet begun making connections between challenge scale and approach language. In tandem we observed that awareness that Language 1 skills mastery is not Language 2 skills mastery remains in its infancy. Reflecting faculty skills, most graduate design programs remain focused on teaching design thinking as Language 1. We believe that the shift depicted here will fundamentally change graduate design education in the next ten years, in many programs slowly and in a very few programs rapidly. This shift has already taken place in many leading design innovation practices. See NextD Geographies story here: http://issuu.com/nextd/docs/nextdfutures2011_v02
