W ELCOME!

On behalf of the entire New York Medical College community, we are honored to welcome you to the 2014 Founder’s Dinner. Your generous support of this dinner and your presence here this evening signal your strong partnership with New York Medical College and your belief in its ability to improve our world. Institutions cannot progress without the help of many partners, and New York Medical College is no exception. In fact, it has been through numerous strong partnerships that the College has advanced its mission throughout its 154-year history. That is why we are so excited about New York Medical College’s partnership with the Touro College and University System under the leadership of Alan Kadish, M.D., president, and of Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer. The opportunities that this partnership presents for continuing growth and increased excellence hold great promise for the College’s future. Tonight we are honoring three individuals who embody the spirit of committed partnership and distinguished leadership that lie at the heart of the College’s mission and success. The William Cullen Bryant Award recognizes individuals who, in the tradition of the College’s founder, William Cullen Bryant, demonstrate distinguished leadership in health care, science, education, business or the arts. It will be presented to Joanne Kurtzberg M.D. ’76, an internationally renowned expert in pediatric hematology/oncology, pediatric blood and marrow transplantation, umbilical cord blood banking and transplantation, and novel applications of cord blood in the emerging fields of cellular therapies and regenerative medicine. The Jackson E. Spears Community Service Award is bestowed upon individuals or organizations who have demonstrated exceptional service and commitment to their communities. This year the award will honor Andrew P. Ordon, M.D., G.M.E. ’85, an acclaimed surgeon in the areas of aesthetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgery with a private practice in Beverly Hills and Rancho Mirage, California. The Distinguished Service Award recognizes an individual who has helped advance the College’s mission of education and research though service, commitment and expert ability. This year’s award will be presented to Richard Stone, M.D. ’68, who is a board-certified pediatrician, fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the New York Academy of Medicine and a member of many other professional organizations. We are delighted to have this opportunity to recognize these individuals and all they have accomplished on behalf of this institution at this gala occasion. Once again, thank you for helping to advance New York Medical College’s mission through your generous support of the Founder’s Dinner. We look forward to maintaining our partnership with each of you as the College continues to evolve as one of the finest health sciences universities in the country. With our deepest gratitude and best wishes for a wonderful evening,

William Cullen Bryant

A w ard

New York Medical College established the William Cullen Bryant Award in 1983 to recognize those remarkable individuals who, in the tradition of the College’s founder, William Cullen Bryant, demonstrate seminal leadership in health care, science, education, business, or the arts. Bryant, the son of a physician, was an editor, philosopher, poet, lawyer, and dynamic civic leader who substantively influenced the issues of his day through the power of his pen. During the second half of the 19th century, he led a select group of influential individuals in creating New York Medical College, which today has become one of the nation’s largest private health sciences universities. Bryant subsequently served as president of the College’s Board of Trustees for more than a decade and was the medical school’s first president. The qualities of distinguished and broad leadership that Bryant demonstrated have been characteristic of all William Cullen Bryant medal awardees.

Joanne Kurtzberg, M.D. ’76 New York Medical College alumna, Joanne Kurtzberg, M.D. ’76, is an internationally renowned expert in pediatric hematology/oncology, pediatric blood and marrow transplantation, umbilical cord blood banking and transplantation, and novel applications of cord blood in the emerging fields of cellular therapies and regenerative medicine. After her graduation from NYMC, Dr. Kurtzberg completed her internship at Dartmouth Medical Center and her residency at Upstate Medical Center at the State University of New York in 1980. In that same year, she began her career at Duke University Medical Center as a senior research fellow in pediatric hematology-oncology. Within three years, she was appointed assistant professor of pediatrics. She became professor of pediatrics in 1993 and professor of pathology in 2003. Dr. Kurtzberg pioneered the use of umbilical cord blood as an alternative stem cell source for unrelated hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Over the last two decades Dr. Kurtzberg has established an internationally known pediatric transplant program at Duke which treats children with cancer, blood disorders, immune deficiencies, hemoglobinopathies and inherited metabolic diseases. In 2010, Kurtzberg established the Julian Robertson Cell and Translational Therapy Program (CT2) at Duke. CT2 focuses on translational studies from bench to bedside with an emphasis on bringing cellular therapies in regenerative medicine to the clinic. Additionally, Dr. Kurtzberg established one of the largest unrelated donor cord blood banks in the world, the Carolinas Cord Blood Bank, at Duke in 1998. Her lab has developed novel assays to predict cord blood potency from segments attached to cryopreserved cord blood units, and is performing translational research testing cord blood expansion, cellular targeted therapies and tissue repair and regeneration. In 2012, under the direction of Dr. Kurtzberg, the Carolinas Cord Blood Bank received FDA approval for DuCord, a stem cell product derived from umbilical cord blood, for use in transplants between unrelated donors and recipients. Dr. Kurtzberg has published more than 300 peer-reviewed papers, multiple chapters and scientific reviews. She is a member of numerous medical societies as well as other organizations and serves on the Board of the Foundation of Accreditation of Cellular Therapies, co-chairs the National Marrow Donor Program’s Cord Blood Advisory Group and is a member of the Advisory Council of Blood Stem Cell Transplantation to Health and Human Services. Dr. Kurtzberg was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pediatric Blood & Marrow Transplant Consortium in 2012.

October 26, 2014 Dr. Mark Hasten, Chairman of the Board Dr. Alan Kadish, President Dr. Edward Halperin, Chancellor and CEO New York Medical College 40 Sunshine Cottage Road Valhalla, New York 10595 Dear Chairman Hasten, President Kadish and Chancellor and CEO Halperin, It is my pleasure to recognize New York Medical College at your “Founder’s Dinner” and to celebrate your 154 years of exceptional education that the medical college has provided already to doctors and health care professionals as well as to future ones. Today, we honor the university and celebrate its numerous most recent accomplishments. In 1860, New York Medical College was founded by William Cullen Bryant. Mr. Bryant’s ultimate goal was to create an institution where hospitals and medical education conditions were not as primitive as they were in those days. The Medical College has more than achieved this goal. Today, the college is a renowned place to work and study. The Medical College was one of the first universities to open the doors to women and minorities in the medical field. Additionally, the university is one of the largest employers in Westchester County. Of its 1,270 employees, 1,236 work in Westchester County and receive $86.5 million in annual compensation. The college is affiliated with a network of hospitals and health care facilities throughout the Hudson Valley and the New York Metropolitan region. In addition, New York Medical College joined the Touro College and University system in 2011. NY Medical College, in partnership with Touro College, will soon be offering new programs to train to be a Physician’s Assistant, attain a Bachelor of Nursing, or become a Masters of Biomedical Ethics. One of the university’s remarkable achievements has been the opening of its new 21,000 square foot Clinical and Disaster Medicine Training Center. Another project soon to be opened is the Biotech Incubator. The Incubator will occupy 4,500 square feet of the 110,000 square foot facility in which it is housed, and was a Hudson Valley Regional Economic Development Council priority project. This project will provide new wet lab space, business training, and state of the art research facilities for new growth companies. The Biotech Incubator has received $5 million in New York State funding through the Economic Development Council. I hope that you enjoy tonight’s ceremony. Once again, congratulations. I look forward to hearing about New York Medical College’s continued achievements and good service to Westchester County. Sincerely,

Sandy Galef New York State Assemblywoman, 95th A.D.

Dear Friends: Congratulations to the New York Medical College, its Board, employees, and volunteers on your annual Founders’ Dinner, celebrating 154 years of providing exceptional education to doctors and health care professionals. I offer my special congratulations to you on your many recent accomplishments. In partnership with the Touro College and University, New York Medical College will offer new programs in Physician’s Assistant, Bachelor of Nursing and Masters of Biomedical Ethics. As the elected representative of the 90th Assembly district representing the City of Yonkers, I am aware of the important role New York Medical College plays in our regional economy. It is a great tribute to your founder -- poet, civic leader and journalist, William Cullen Bryant -- that you continue to grow and change with the changing economy and needs of the community. As he wisely noted, “weep not that the world changes - did it keep a stable, changeless state, it were cause indeed to weep.”

Since its founding in by William Cullen Bryant, New York Medical College has been an integral part of our community. Thousands of medical professionals have received their training at this illustrious institution, and recent events demonstrate that New York Medical College is well positioned to expand its services to the people of Westchester County and beyond. In partnership with Touro College, the University will offer new programs in Physician’s Assistant, Bachelor of Nursing and Masters of Biomedical Ethics. This year saw the opening of the 21,000 sq. ft. “Clinical Skills and Disaster Medicine Training Center.” Soon to open is the Biotech Incubator that will provide new wet lab space, business training and state of the art research facilities for new growth companies. In the not too distant future, we hope to see the School of Dentistry accept its first students as well.

Please accept my best wishes for a wonderful celebration and continued success in the future. Sincerely,

Thomas J. Abinanti
