A Great Day At The Spring Fling

By Brenda Wiseman SUN CITY CENTER, March 2012 – It couldn’t have been a better day for the Kings Point Spring Fling, because you can’t improve on perfection. And the large number of happy people strolling through the grounds, munching on goodies, and winning raffle prizes offered proof of a fun day.

Attending the Spring Fling gave residents a chance to catch-up on many of “the doings” constantly happening throughout Kings Point, gave non-residents a chance to learn more about Kings Point, and gave everybody a chance to just have some old-fashioned fun.

If you are a gourmet cook and were planning on fixing dinner later that day, you found the place for one stop shopping.

A beautiful array of veggies was presented for your eating pleasure. It looked like a postcard when the sunlight hit the green peppers and red tomatoes as it peeked through the leaves.

Choices of breads and rolls were enough to make you want to sit right down with a stick of butter and have a yummy snack. Of course, the variety of pastries was enough to make your mouth water If you were looking for something to spice up your outfit in addition to dinner, you could pick up some handmade jewelry, or if wanted to spice up your décor, there was some whimsical pottery to take with you.

SCC to Kilimanjaro & Beyond

A Journey of Love, Compassion & Friendship, Blessed by God has brought us to this miraculous moment in time.

The journey started in April, 2011 when two dynamic Sisters of our Lady of Kilimanjaro, visited St. Anne’s Catholic Church to appeal to the parishioners for contribution for their mission.

Sister Rosamunda & Castissima asked for help for the orphanage, infirmary, medical centers, hospitals and the schools in Diocese of Moshi, Tanzania.

Their story reached our hearts.

Daily children & babies are abandoned at their doorsteps, by sick or dying parents who choose to have the good sisters save their lives and raise them.

Currently the orphanage has over 2,000 HIV Positive children in their care. So many children and so little food, clothes, shoes, and necessities of life for them.

Yet these beautiful children are always smiling because the good sisters provide love, compassion, comfort, the teachings that they are the children of God. These children are the victim of primitive beliefs & practices

that result in the spread of Aids throughout their society. These helpless children have grown up without parents relying on patriarchal relatives and the Sisters of our Lady Kilimanjaro for the essentials of life.

There needs are many and resources limited. When we asked the Sisters how we could help Sr. Rosamunda humbly replied “well the children need pencils” and the rest is history. Braces wheel chairs, walkers, crutches, medical supplies, clothing, shoes, computer, refrigerator, microwave, washer & dryer, sewing machine, organ & much more were sent. We have successfully filled and shipped the container on Feb 20th, 2012 to aid the Children & Sisters of Kilimanjaro.

you hungry, there were many alternatives to ease your hunger pains. A line formed for the cuisine from the Kings Point kitchens and as people joked, laughed, and enjoyed the sunshine. Waiting was just a part of the fun. There was even a spot to indulge in pirogues. What a treat.

Entertainment Tent from Zumba demonstrations, which had people dancing in their seats to lip sync acts, which had folks clapping, laughing and remembering special times as they listened to the old songs.

Who knew there was so much talent in Kings Point?

And those who love volunteering to give back to the community had plenty of opportunities to learn about specific organizations then sign up to help--SCC Emergency Squad, CERT, Lifeline through The Men’s Club, and Relay for Life.

A big thank you to all the folks who worked behind the scenes to provide a happy day for the rest of us. I had a great time, even if I did sit on the loaf of bread I bought.

The Editor’s Corner Calling All Summer Clubs & Groups

By Adam Porter, EIC NOKP Spring is upon us and summer is just around the corner.

That means, for those of us here in sunny Florida, that many of our neighbors will be pointing their wagons north to journey to cooler climes, leaving us to sweat out June, July, August and September down here with all the other sun worshippers. And, for folks in Sun City Center, that also means that many, if not most of the local clubs and groups will be shutting down until fall.

So, with all the snowbirds going, going, gone, what’s a “sun” bird to do?

Considering the messages I’ve been reading from group and club leaders who are beginning to announce their FALL schedules, I’m guessing some of you might be asking yourselves that same question. So, here’s my attempt to help you answer that question.

This article is my official SOS call to all those who have group activities planned for the summer. Tell me – and, by extension ALL of your neighbors and new friends about them. Send me an email through the submission form at www.NewsOfKingsPoint. com or via the email there under SUBMISSIONS on page 3 of the fine publication you now hold in your hands.

Whether you are a group that meets all year or you are a club, activity or an informal hobby group that continues to meet during the hottest of Florida’s three hot seasons* the News of Kings Point wants to hear from you. We will be running features on clubs and groups all summer long and, if you want yours to be one gets top billing, get your

submissions in here fast. First come, first listed.

Beginning in the fall we will also start featuring our seasonal clubs again, so you can send in those submissions as well, beginning in July. So, what about it? Do you have some group summer fun planned? Will you be getting together, learning stuff, trying things and going places?

Would you like some more folks to know about it? We’re here, waiting for you to tell us, so we can tell everyone else.

Birkenshaw Fills Top Library Post

SCC Library is a “partnership library” with the Hillsborough County library system. That expands SCC’s range of service since residents can pick up and drop off reserved HC materials.

Elaine, a Columbus, Ohio, native, graduated from Ohio State University. Her move to Florida came in 1981 where she earned a Masters Degree in Library Science from the University of South Florida.

For 20 years she was with the St. Petersburg Public Library System, with her most recent post being Manager, Main library & Branches. She and her husband Stan moved to Sun

By Phyllis Hodges Elaine Birkenshaw joined the team at the SCC Library team in January as Library Administrator, filling the vacancy created by Irene Glow who retired late last year.

Elaine says that she likes the hands-on interface with customers at SCC. Since the basic purpose of a library is working with people to find what they need, Elaine’s sunny disposition seems perfectly

suited for the post.

Because the library has 40 volunteers, only five employees are required for a smooth operation. In addition to the administrator, it has one fulltime and three part-time employees. Elaine reports to Lyn Reitz, Community Manager; the others report to her. The experience of the employees and volunteers covers a wide spectrum. Many are retired librarians or media specialists;

She said the SCC opportunity came at a perfect time. The long commute had become exhausting and she was considering retirement at the time.

Regarding changes to the library under her watch, she said that new interior paint and rearranging material is slated for this summer. A big change not too far away is removal of outdated formats (VHS and audio cassettes) to clear space for new material. “We will be doing whatever we can with what we have available. That means better use of our limited space and making it look more modern and fresh,” she said

Millie Shepherd took her News of Kings Point along with her to Tacoma, WA for her son’s retirement from the Air Force after 22 years. This picture was taken just off of the flightline at McChord Field (Air Force Base), in Washington state. This statue was in remembrance of a crew that went down with a C-141 aircraft years ago. Mt. Rainier is in the background but due to the cloud covering it cannot be seen (typical WA weather during this time of the year).

m a Wi se April. I have to admit, even after living in Kings Point for 13 years, my mind wanders back to spring in Ohio--daffodils, tulips, forsythia, and snowstorms. The thought of snow storms have brought those thought right back to Florida in a heartbeat, but no matter where you live or what you are doing April 15th and the taxman will find you.

Fortunately, we have the help to make that day as painless as possible. We have AARP tax counselors available right at our Main Clubhouse. With a computer, a book of the current tax guidelines, and a smile, these volunteers can put your information into the computer, calculate the amount of the payment or the return, and send it off while you are sitting there.

You can find this help in the Communications Room of the Clubhouse from 9 AM to 3 PM Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and at the United Community Church in Sun City Center and the Ruskin Community Center in Ruskin.

You can make reservations for the Clubhouse tax office by calling 813.938.8959 or you can take your chances on

4th Annual Mardi Gras Golf Card Parade

Jameson Condo in Kings Point celebrated Mardi Gras with its 4th annual Mardi Gras Golf Cart Parade. 21 Golf carts, decked out in Mardi Gras colors, banners and assorted posters, paraded through Kings Point accompanied by traditional New Orleans Jazz music. Revelers, some in costume, headgear and masks, threw beads and candy

to delighted onlookers. Partiers from Grantham Condo joined the festivities.

The parade was followed by a community potluck dinner.

A feature of this year’s Mardi Gras was the 90th birthday for

resident Lenora Chapman. She received many cards, good wishes and a tasty birthday cake.

Jameson Condo, famous for its activities, continues to be a place for friendly neighbors to

share good times, laughter and great food.

Golf Cart Safety

Submitted by Deputy Chris Girard Before we begin this month I want to state, for the record, that what I’m about to share is intended for general knowledge.

While there has not been what you might call “an outbreak” of the following issue, there have been enough incidents for me to want to call attention to both the problem and a simple way to help keep it from happening to you.

The issue I am discussing is golf cart theft and the related crime of golf cart batteries and chargers being stolen from unattended carts. Again, while there is no battery-related crime wave happening, there were at least 3 incidents in a recent month.

Remember, as times get harder, crimes of opportunity will be on the rise. A crime of opportunity is one that is not necessarily planned, but one in which the bad guy sees a potential opportunity and takes it. For example, car keys left in an unlocked, running vehicle or a back door left open with no one at home.

This specific crime of opportunity is happening because some residents are leaving their golf carts unattended. Even if you are “just running in for a minute” be sure to take your keys with you.

Also, if you are at home, even if you only plan to be inside for a few minutes, put your cart in a garage, if possible. You may be delayed for a few moments and it only takes seconds for an

opportunistic bad guy to take your cart and ruin your day.

Also, concerning the batteries and chargers. Always be certain to lock up all of your battery chargers when you are not using them. As for your batteries, be sure to install battery brackets so that it makes it more difficult for anyone to quickly remove the battery. This might be a slight inconvenience for you, but it will likely send a potential thief down the road empty handed.

Above all else, be aware. This includes being sure to keep your valuables, keys and accessories on your person or safely stowed away when you are not in your cart as well as not leaving any potential valuables visible while you are out and about.

Let me close this month by saying, again, we all know what safe and wonderful communities Kings Point and Sun City Center are. It only takes a simple bit of preventative effort and careful vigilance to help keep it that way.

So, lock up your carts and your chargers and be sure to protect your batteries. And, most of all, enjoy all of your days in this great community.

SCC Year-Long 50th Celebration Closes April 20 with Gala

by Judy Schings and her committee members Barbara Gingrich and Janet McRee promises to be a fitting grand finale indeed. On the program for the evening will be dancing with music by FLASHBACK. George Seeley, Photo Club president, will be showing pictures from the past year’s 50th events so we can all reminisce about the wonderful year we have all enjoyed.

The “closing ceremony” will include comments by Ann Marie Leblanc, chair of the 50th Anniversary Celebration.. .

How Broadway Comes To Kings Point

By Linda Halperin This year’s Pelican Players Spring production will be SOCIAL SECURITY, a comedy written by Andrew Bergman. Before becoming a playwright, Bergman was a screenwriter whose films included Blazing Saddles; The In-Laws; and Fletch.

SOCIAL SECURITY first opened on Broadway in 1986 and was directed by the very talented Mike Nichols. His cast included Ron Silver, Marlo Thomas and Joanna Gleason.

Fast forward to 2012. On April 20 and 21st, SOCIAL SECURITY can be seen at the Borini Theatre in Kings Point.

This sassy and saucy play is directed by the very talented Carlyn Postle. Carlyn has been a high school drama teacher for almost 50 years She has worked in community theatres here in America as well as overseas.

Her experience includes: directing, acting, and managing most technical areas. She says she “loves

the ‘rush’ that you get only by being involved with the theatre. And when you have a cast and crew that take what you suggest and make it really work, well WHAT CAN BE BETTER THAN THAT??!!”

The cast includes Delyse Axinn, Linda Halperin, Jim Klamer, Jack Parry, Wendy Smith and Bill Turcotte. It has been reported that rehearsing for this play has been a labor of love, with cast and crew having way too much fun. As one member of the cast stated, “the actor’s job is to follow directions, to bring the character on the page to life on the stage, and to be darn sure the audience is entertained. And *** is it a fun job!” SOCIAL SECURITY is indeed an entertaining and witty play about the highs and lows of relationships and love.

The Hope Fund’s Breakfast and Bingo Fundraiser Coming April 7th

Saturday, April 7th is the date for the next Breakfast and Bingo fundraiser sponsored by the Hope Fund twice a year to benefit the children who attend the afterschool and summer programs at Bethune Park in Wimauma.

The breakfast, which still costs only $6.00, takes place from 8:30 am to 11 am at Community Hall at 1910 S Pebble Beach Blvd. in Sun City Center and consists of a large omelet of your choice, a bagel and cream cheese or a Danish, orange juice, and coffee or tea. For the April 7th Breakfast and Bingo the number of chefs flipping those omelets will be doubled to get you through the line quickly! Starting at 9:30, if you wish, play bingo for cash prizes.

Bingo cards cost $1.00. Tickets for the event are available at the door. Bring your friends and neighbors. All are welcome.

The Hope Fund, an all volunteer, 501©(3) organization, is made up of people who care about kids

and is pleased to announce that it is now partnering with RCMA (A mission that works with children) to lease the Bethune Park buildings in Wimauma from Hillsborough County so that the after-school and summer programs can continue!

Most of the children who attend Bethune Park are from low income homes and do not have the advantages of children who come from more affluent families.

Attending the after-school and summer programs gives the children the self-esteem they need to get a good start in life and become caring, productive citizens. At Bethune Park, the children are in a safe, nurturing environment with responsible, caring adults while their parents are at work. Many of the children would otherwise be home alone after school, without supervision.

Volunteers work with the kids as tutors, mentors, and readers.

Florida Estates Winery – A Grape Place to Visit

By Eddie Dixon Buying local is a concept that’s near and dear to my heart. I love to support local vendors, shopkeepers and restaurateurs.

Another something that’s near and dear to both my missus and me is the good ol’ vino. Florida Estates Winery, in central Pasco County is a fun and refreshing place to visit just about any time of year.

Surprising is one of the adjectives that springs to mind when folks visit Florida Estates.

For one thing, the location, 4 miles west of the Highway 52 exit off I-75 does not exactly Carriage at the December Wine Festival shout “this way to fine wines.”

In fact, the place is located in what was likely once, and may still be at times, a cow pasture.

But that doesn’t mean these folks don’t know their fruit of the vine.

After a quarter century of extensive wine study and involvement in the industry, the proprietors of Florida Estates opened for business in December 2001. Unlike some other local vintners, Florida Estates does not focus on Florida Estates Wines fruit fusions or eclectic vinos.

They focus on quality and just enough variety to keep most palettes happy. Selections at the winery include: Plantation White. This light wine was created to be enjoyed with good foods. They advertise full, luscious grape flavors. A great wine to sip and enjoy with friends. While the whites aren’t my glass of choice, you’ll get no argument from the wife, who pronounced her glass, “delish.”

Plantation Red. This one is more my speed. A light-bodied wine full of flavor but lower in tannic acids. In other words, less gritty aftertaste. They tell you to pair it with pasta, fish or chicken. I’d drink it with just about anything.

Plantation Blush. Not necessarily the best of both worlds, but a beautiful compromise if you must go home with only one bottle. This is Florida Estates’ version of the famed California White Zinfandel. Fruity and crisp, but not exactly sweet. I like a white Zin with fruit and cheese, but would not pass up a glass all by itself.

Plantation Spice. Don’t let the name fool you. This one is sweet, almost a dessert wine and a perfect pair with chocolate, cheesecake or a light mousse.

By now you’re getting quite happy and the list of selections is only half complete.

Casa Del Sol Florida Orange.

An homage to Florida’s signature citrus fruit. Interesting is the best way I can describe it.

Casa Del Sol Florida Key Lime.

Okay, so forget what I said earlier. They do get a little bit wild with their selections. But this one is surprisingly good.

Tangy and redolent of that mischievous little yellow fruit from down south. Nice with fish.

Chateau Soleil Chardonnay.

A flavorful, rich wine that manages to be upscale but not pretentious. Fruity without being

too overwhelming. Good flavor and nice aftertaste. Of all the others, this one made me feel most like I was “savoring” my selection.

Casa Del Sol Strawberry Port.

Very nice dessert wine fills your mouth with sweet winter fruit and a hint of, believe it or not, caramel. This one is pricier than the others, but, at 19% alcohol, you are getting your money’s worth.

Now that you know what’s offered, here’s what I suggest.

Pack up your picnic basket and make a day of it. The winery is only about an hour away, but you will want to take your time here. Tour the winery and taste their selections. It makes a great day away, and, this time of year, the weather here in the Sunshine State is perfect for an afternoon or late morning outdoors.

The Sun City Center Photo Club to Meet on Tuesday, April 10 at 6:30 p.m. If you want to learn to create unique photos, you will want to attend the April 10 SCC Photo Club meeting. John Hynal, Education Director at Johnson PhotoImaging in Bradenton, will present “Using Shutter Speed to Create Effective and Unique Photos,” a closer look at the benefits of changing your shutter speed for different conditions and effects. Controlling shutter speeds can create many different results, from the classic “freeze effect” stop action to contemporary blurred images using pan shot speeds. But then there’s more. Discover the excitement of controlling long exposures for fireworks, lightning and abstract imaging. You will also learn creative techniques such as how to ghost and trace your subjects.

Community members and guests are welcome to attend. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Caper Room with a tutorial. After a short business meeting at 7 p.m., the program will begin. Club meetings are open to all in the area.

Kings Point Chorus will present “A Spring Musicale” on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 4 pm at Borini Theatre. This concert will reflect on the history of choral music from serious to whimsy. The conductor will be Charles Wirick, accompanied on the piano by Ruth Hewitt.

There will be cabaret seating at round tables of eight, which proved very popular at the last concert in December. This time there will also be seating in the balcony. Attendees may bring their beverage of choice. Cheese and crackers will be provided for all attending.

Tickets may be purchased at the Kings Point box office at the North Clubhouse. The price is six dollars. You are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance for table seating. Tickets will also be sold at the door, but table seating cannot be guaranteed. Come and enjoy this beautiful music!

Scandinavian Club Meeting

At the 16th April meeting of the Scandinavian Club of SCC we will learn about genealogy and the Internet for tracing roots and ancestors. Following a genealogy slide presentation by a librarian at the SouthShore Regional Library, club member and Director of South Bay Genealogical Society Ed Frank will demonstrate online searches of Scandinavian ancestry. The Parade is Coming

A golf cart parade planned for December 8 has a goal—setting a record for the most decorated golf carts for a community our size!

Dave Birkett, parade chair, said the theme of “Tis the Sea Sun” was chosen to let your creativity and imagination soar.

The cash prizes are spectacular—thanks to the generosity of Minto Communities. There will be $5,000 in cash prizes—three for individuals, three for clubs and one for nonprofit organizations such as Lions, Kiwanis, etc. Commercial and other groups such as homeowner associations are welcome to join in the parade but they will not be eligible for prizes. British Connection News

All residents of Sun City Center and Kings Point are invited to join The British Connection for an evening of entertainment on Wednesday, April 18, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. in the Florida Room of the Atrium. The East Bay High School chorus, “Sounds of Time,” under the direction of Brian NeSmith, will present a musical program of traditional and contemporary music.

“Catering Specialties by Steve” will prepare gourmet pizzas to your order prior to the concert. Tickets are $8.00 for members and $10.00 for guests. Non-alcoholic beverages including soda, tea, coffee and setups for mixed drinks will be provided (BYOB). Dessert will also be included.

Six new” Emergency Medical Responders” have graduated from the SCC Emergency Squad training program. The month long course included certification in CPR as well as medical and trauma emergencies, airway management, the human body, bleeding, shock, and poisoning. Now, students are assigned to one of 8 teams and will begin a period of mentoring with an experienced ambulance crew. The Squad consists of 430 volunteers and is growing. Interest has grown in a the art of sculpting at the Kings Point Pottery Club Studio at the South Club in King’s Point at Sun City Center through the efforts of Jack Summers, the club’s sculpting teacher.

Jack was trained by world famous sculptor and teacher Philippe Faraut of New York. Here Summers leads a class in beginning sculpture. Those pictured seated are: Nancy Metcalf, Gloria Masi, Tom Wuenstel, Bill Patterson, Nancy Metcalf, Marti Goodman and Linda Peterson, Many other classes are available to the residents such as Beginners and Advanced Hand Building classes, Glazing Techniques, and Beginning and Advanced Pottery Wheel Classes.

All are taught by qualified teachers and classes are very reasonable.

West Central Florida Area Agency On Aging Announces Winner Of 2011 Arts And Entertainment Senior Of The Year

The West Central Florida Area Agency for Aging presented Joe Kanoza with the 2011 Salt and Pepper award for Arts and Entertainment the 6th Annual Gala. Joe Kanoza is a talented and highly regarded illustrator, portrait artist, and designer with over 40 years of experience as a professional painter. He is particularly wellknown for his vibrant portraits and golf landscapes. The exceptional quality of his art and his ability to work well with people attracts clients internationally. Being a relatively new resident to the Sun City Center, Kanoza was delighted to receive local recognition of his accomplishments.

A recipient of several national awards for his commercial work and portraits, Kanoza’s art has been headlined in galleries in Pennsylvania, Texas, New York, New Mexico and Nevada. His celebrity portraits have been featured on the covers of publications such as the U.S. Open and Wall Street Journal.

In addition to his portraits, Kanoza is an outstanding golf landscape artist. He was selected by Golf Digest as being one of the top 15 golf course artists in the country. His intense passion for the game of golf makes it possible for him to capture the mood and stunning beauty of each golf course he paints. He resides in Sun City Center, where he continues to create award-winning art and shares his knowledge of painting in both private and group lessons.

Swim Show A Splashing Success

The SCC Swim Dancers, a synchronized swim team, presented its 2012 show “The Way We Were” to a sold-out pool viewing area on March 10th. As a new touch, four mermaids opened the show with their feet encased in fish tails - to make swimming more interesting. This year’s show also included the talents of four great men - good sports, willing to entertain with their own routine in - and out of the water! The audience was treated to a colorful program, complete with swim numbers which included a solo, duet and group numbers, and ending in a finale, with the entire cast of 24 - swimming, singing and waving the flag to “God Bless America“ and including a banner congratulating the CA on its 50th anniversary.

The club welcomes any ladies interested in becoming part of this team. This is the time to jump in and work on the swim skills.

Practices are Monday and Wednesday evenings at 7:30 and/or Friday morning at 7:30. Come on in - the water’s great!!! For info call President Ginny Williams at 634-1710.

The Tournament games are over. Frank Crowley is the new Men’s Champ and Judi Freiboth is the new Women’s Champ. George Fenwick and Judy Fenwick were second in each event. It was the Club Championship Game that kept the spectators and guests glued to their chairs. It was nip & tuck and ended in a Sudden Death game, with Frank Crowley ONE POINT ahead of Judi Freiboth! The Pairs Game was won by Judi Freiboth & Sam Giliberto in a close match against Bill Moore & Bill Healey. Paul Bradshaw was the Novice Winner. All the competitors were cool, calm & collected & many had the time of their lives with kids and grandkids on the sidelines urging them on to bigger & better scores.

The Crazy Bowls Social and Banquet Awards Dinner Dance will be held in March. The Wine & Cheese Party is scheduled for a date in April. All dates & times are posted.

Marge Hile, a long-time resident of Kings Point and Highgate IV Board member, has moved to California to be near her daughters and son-in-law. Her friends from the neighborhood had a luncheon at Cypress Creek Restaurant on February 23 to say goodbye and good luck to Marge as she starts a new chapter in her life.

Darlene Walters’ troupe of hula dancers, the Hula Honeys, performed on March 14th at the Queens’ Luncheon in the Kings Point Borini Theatre. The meal was consistent with the tropical theme and included sweet & sour chicken with Hawaiian vegetable fried rice.

A capacity crowd was treated to a variety of hula dances, from traditional to modern. Pearl, the latest addition to the troupe, dances from her wheelchair and is an inspiration to any handicapped person who thinks they can’t join in because of a disability.

The host for the show was John Cortese and vocal entertainment was provided by Ron Leombruno. The troupe extends their warm thanks to Eva Hooley for her invaluable assistance as Stage Manager. Anyone interested in Darlene’s class, held in Kings Point, may contact her at 633-6839.

Military News National Weather Service forecaster addresses MOAA

Mr. Ernie Jillson was the featured speaker at the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) March luncheon, which was held in the Florida Room at the Sun City Center Atrium building on March 7th, 2012. Mr. Jillson’s first NWS assignment was in Barrigada, Guam from July 2000 to June 2003. His second was here in Tampa (Ruskin) from June 2003 to present.

Before he joined the National Weather Service, Mr. Jillson attended college at Lyndon State College in Vermont where he earned a BS in Meteorology in 1985. Dr. Susan MacManus, political analyst, to address MOAA

The April Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) meeting featuring Dr. Susan MacManus will be held in the Sun City Center Atrium building in the Florida Room at 11:00 am on Wednesday April 4th, 2012. Dr. MacManus is a Distinguished University Professor of Public Administration and Political Science in the Department of Government and International Affairs at the University of South Florida. She is nationally renowned for her expert and incisive commentary on public opinion and intergenerational politics and has appeared on ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CNN, Fox Photo by Frank Kepley News Channel, MSNBC, PBS, Dr. Susan MacManus BBC, NHK (Tokyo), Australian Television, C-SPAN, National Public Radio, and in various print media.

During the 2000 and 2004 election season, she served as the political analyst for WFLA News Channel 8, the Florida News Channel, and WFLA News Radio.

Dr. MacManus is a Fulbright research scholar and has written numerous books; her latest is entitled Florida Politics: Ten Media Markets, One Powerful State, and was published in 2004.

Leatherneck Club’s Military Family Coupon Program

Past Commander and founder of the Leathernecks Club Jim Glass is shown delivering coupons to the SCC post office for overseas shipment to three military bases.

Jim and his wife Jan established the coupon program in February of 2010 and with the efforts of countless community clubs, churches, synagogues, schools and individuals within the community, and in and out of state, the Leathernecks have shipped over ½ ton of coupons annually.

The coupons are manufacturer’s coupons, with a bar graph and expiration date.

Manufacturers have agreed to extend the expiration date by 6 months for military families living overseas and shopping at commissaries and PX’s. Families from all military branches of service are eligible to receive the coupons. The Military Family Support Trust has also partnered with the Leathernecks both in collecting coupons and in assisting with the postal expenses.

Leathernecks Support Annual Veterans Dinner Dance

The annual Veterans Dinner Dance was held earlier this month. The theme for this year’s dance was a “sock hop”. Several Sun City Center and King’s Point military organizations participated in this event. Shown above are some of the members of the Leatherneck’s club attending and their guests. Proceeds will be donated to James A. Haley, VA Hospital for use by the Recreation Therapy Department.

Captain Charles Marsicano honored by MOWW

Captain Charles Marsicano, Hillsborough County Fire and Rescue Department, was awarded the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) Distinguished Service Award on Thursday, March 15th at the Sun City Center Plaza Club. Capt. Marsicano has been providing exemplary, dedicated fire and rescue service for Hillsborough County residents and businesses for 28 years. He supervised the orderly opening of Sun City Center’s Station 28 in 1992. It now responds to an average of 18 calls per day to the Greater Sun City Center Community and its surrounding area. Capt. Marsicano is a highly respected senior captain of three shifts at Station 28.

General Monroe W. Hatch Jr. vice chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. was the featured speaker at the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) luncheon on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at the Freedom Plaza Club in Sun City Center. He entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1951 and graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He earned a Master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Oklahoma Photos by Frank Kepley in 1969 and completed the From left, Gen Monroe Hatch, USAF National War College in 1974. accepting certificate from Lt Col Frank He was assigned to SAC Zahrobsky, USAF (Ret), Commander headquarters in February 1982 SCC MOWW and served as deputy chief of staff for plans until February 1983, when he became the command’s chief of staff.

General Hatch was appointed inspector general of the Air Force in September 1984. In August 1985 he was assigned as vice commander in chief, Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base. General Hatch is a command pilot with more than 6,000 flying hours. He Gen Monroe Hatch, USAF assumed his present duties in February 1987.

Gen Hatch related some of his experiences relative to the many challenges and changes that have occurred in the Russian hierarchy over the past forty years or so. His account of the numerous Russian leaders and the world situations they each faced was both informative and entertaining.

NCWS Exceeds Pledge Goal

South Bay Hospital Earns Accreditation in CT

South Bay Hospital has been awarded a threeyear term of accreditation in computed tomography (CT) as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

Submitted by Jackie McDow Kings Point Academy Golf Course held their 8th annual Ryder Cup weekend on February 11 & 12. The teams were announced on Saturday night with a wonderful sit-down catered meal. Entertainment was provided by the Master of Ceremonies, Jack Kubiak.

The two teams, the Red Ryders (dubbed by the other team as the "little red riding hoods" and the Kings Point Big Dogs (re-named by the Red Ryders as the chiwawas) were

introduced by the respective captains, Jack Kubiak and Jim Lahti.

Red Ryders defeated the Kings Point Big Dogs in team play match competition on Sunday afternoon. Chairman Jack Moran reported that the games were friendly but very competitive. In spite of cool weather, players were cheered on by their spouses and friends at the club house turn. A wind up dinner followed the game to allow bragging rights to the winners.

Penny is never dull and takes a shine to most visitors, volunteers or passersby. She likes her afternoon nap on the cat tower and that is where she can be found most afternoons unless she is sunning on the lanai. Come in and see Penny and give her that loving forever home. Lacey is a pretty Lab/Terrier/Boxer mix. She was found wandering in a rural area, alone. Lacey has a sweet disposition and gives out lots of kisses to her caretakers.

She knows how to sit and walks fine on a leash. She is a puppy that is eager to please. For fun, she loves to play with squeeky stuffed toys out in the play yard.

Lacey seems to be picky about her playmates but otherwise is fine around other dogs. As part of her adoption, Lacey is spayed, microchipped, and brought current on her shots.

Sudman spoke at a recent IFC meeting held at Congregation Beth Israel, 1115 East Del Webb Blvd, informing members present about the 2012 Relay for Life Event in Sun City scheduled for April 10, 2012 at Trinity Baptist Church, 702 West Del Webb Blvd. She explained the how this event not only honors cancer survivors but also remembers people we have lost. She also explained how it raises funds for awareness to help save lives. A $500 donation was presented to Sudman for the Relay for Life Event. Thanks to the hardworking volunteers of the Nearly New Shop in Sun City Center, proceeds from the sale of donated items is given back to the Southern Hillsborough community in the form of grants and scholarships. It’s not difficult to make four hearts on this deal with all four hands in view. After West leads the K-A-J of clubs, you ruff, cash the A-K of spades and trump a spade in dummy. You then lead the nine of hearts to the ace, rejecting the finesse and felling West’s singleton king. You lose a diamond trick later on, but you make four hearts.

But if you could not see the opposing cards, you might very

well go down one after losing a heart finesse to the singleton king. However, even without the advantage of a peek, rejecting the finesse is the right play!

There is a very good reason for arriving at this conclusion. First you take West’s bidding into account; then you combine it with the additional knowledge gained from the play to the first six tricks.

At trick seven, when you lead the nine of hearts from dummy, you know that West -- who must have had at least four diamonds and four clubs for his bids, and who has already shown up with three spades -- cannot possibly have more than two hearts.

(Actually, he’s much more likely to have either one heart or none.)

It follows that you cannot gain by taking a trump finesse. Even if the finesse won, you’d still have to lose a trump trick later to East’s K-x-x or K-x-x-x. Your only hope, therefore, is that West was dealt the singleton king of trumps!
