New Equipment Installed at CA Fitness Center By Phyllis Hodges The C ommun it y Ass o ci at i on’s yearlong $80,000 Fitness Center project of installing a new circuit of 14 machines, four new treadmills and five specialty benches is completed—and these machines are beauties! It was a major effort for the Fitness Center Committee that consists of Chairman Ernie Kociban, Jim Blackstone, Kevin Burke, Doug Seipelt, Kathy Tanzner and Paula Terrenzi. Sam Sudman, CA director, serves as the committee’s board liaison. “The CA with the guidance of the Fitness Center Committee is committed to providing high quality physical fitness equipment to meet the expectations and needs of our members. Equipment is replaced according to its projected life,” Sam said. Although the committee uses a systematic approach for updating the Center, there has been nothing of this magnitude in recent years. Included in the 23 new pieces are replacements for 18 old ones, some of which were 20 years old. Ernie sends kudos Kevin Burke’s way for spearheading the selection process. “Many advancements have been made to

EDITOR’S NOTE RE: Submissions to News of Sun City Center. Several folks have inquired as to the proper format in which to submit content to the News. Any submissions to News of Sun City Center should be sent one of three ways: • 1 Through the submissions link at www.NewsofSunCityCenter.com • 2 Via email at “newsofscc.ca@gmail.com” If you choose this format, send the text of the email IN the email body and attach all photo images (jpeg, png, pdf) • 3 If you prefer, submitting text via an attached Word .doc or .docx is acceptable. Images should also be attached separately. In the past few months we have seen an increase in submissions that appear to be zipped Microsoft Outlook email files with the file suffix “.eml” … This is an unacceptable submission format. Please do not submit content that has been formatted as a flyer or in ALL CAPS or BOLD, etc. All formatting is removed prior to layout. We do this because multiple formats dropped into our layout programs can create extensive formatting issues throughout the entire publication. Thank you for your consideration.

Looking Back

Volunteers of the Past

Sylvia Willis, History Society How did Sun City Center’s long heritage of volunteering begin? It began in 1962 with Stan Clark, who was assigned by the Webb organization to serve as “Activities Director.” Mr. Clark noticed one of the newcomers calling out “Hi, neighbor!” to another newcomer and was inspired to form the Hi Neighbor club in April 1962. All 295 new residents that year were given the title of “Pioneer Members” of the Hi Neighbor club so that they were already “one of us,” as Clark put it. We preserve the spirit of the club today with our annual “Hi, Neighbor!” event that introduces new residents to all that SCC has to offer. Clark conducted the earliest Town Hall meetings in 1962. He later used those meetings to recruit talent who would “manage” the Town Hall activities, which included the woodworking shop that soon became known as the Sawdust Engineers. He worked with the Woman’s Club to establish a volunteer library, dances, shuffleboard and croquet organizations, card groups and some early gardens. SCC now supports more than 150 clubs and organizations, most of which August 21, 1962, Del E. Webb Activities Director, Stan Clark are managed and run by volunteers. Clark astutely observed that putting volunteers in charge of the presents gravel to Mrs. David activities saved him all sorts of time and money, so that all he had to Affleck, first President of The Sun do was pay for whatever facilities were needed. This also meant more City Center Woman’s Club. and more residents had a new purpose in life, something of value to do, inspiring them to bring their time, talents and interests to their volunteering for the benefit of the whole community.

OFFICIAL NOTICE SCCCA MEMBERSHIP MEETING WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11, 2015 7 P.M. COMMUNITY HALL

President’s Report By CA President David Floyd

CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

It seems as though we have been mentioning this item for years, but we are only going into our ninth month of the project. When we first started, we mentioned that it could take up to ten months to complete. We were hoping it would only take eight to nine months, but we had some unanticipated events. These delays are common in all construction projects. We expect the multi-purpose building, the Information Center, and the Samaritans building to open shortly. The library expansion has been delayed due to the problem discovered under the original section of the library. A void was discovered that had to be addressed and fixed before we could begin the renovation of the restroom facilities. We are finalizing the library plumbing. We are working as quickly as possible to make-up some of the lost time. We know that this delay is not only an inconvenience for our members but also for our library staff and the library volunteers. The Roadway lip at Pebble Beach Blvd. North and North Course Lane has been ground down and filled to smooth out the transition to parking lot and North Course Lane. The blank wall at the new Information Center will have a Sun City Center graphic that will say – Sun City Center Community Association – Information Center. The signage should be completed in the next 3-4 weeks. Final landscaping will be completed after we receive the certificates of occupancy from Hillsborough County. Sod has been placed on the vacant land north of North Course Lane. The unsodded central section has been seeded. I would like to thank all the members of our community for their support, cooperation and patience over the past months.

OUR CAMPUS

Over the past year we repainted the buildings and roofs to improve the appearance and update our central campus. As part of this, we stuccoed some of the brickwork to modernize their appearance. We are reviewing trim colors for our buildings to further enhance their curb appeal. We appreciate the input on colors and decorating advice that we received from our membership and welcome further suggestions.

SOFTBALL FIELD

In January your Board of Directors approved an expenditure of $33,500 from the Replacement Fund to upgrade the softball field. The Softball Club contributed $8,500 towards the total cost of the improvements. The project was to improve the playing area, most specifically, the infield. The area was laser-leveled and resurfaced to improve the bounce angles for hit balls and improved the fields’ drainage. Working together, the Club and the Community Association were able to complete this improvement in a very short period of time. I wish to thank the club members for both their help and guidance on this project, which has reduced the potential for dangerous ball rebounds which could cause player injuries. The recent rains have shown that the work definitely improved the field’s drainage.

FITNESS CENTER

In January the Board approved an upgrade to the Fitness Center. On

February 10 outdated and worn red circuit equipment was removed and replaced on February 12. The old red circuit machines were moved from the original Fitness Center and had passed their useful life. The cost of this replacement is $58,000 and was from the Replacement Fund. We were able to sell the old machines to offset some of the costs of the new machines.

WI-FI

Wi-Fi has been installed in the Arts and Crafts building on Cherry Hills Drive. We are just waiting on Verizon to activate it. Our new buildings have been set up for Wi-Fi. We will be further expanding the Wi-Fi on our campus areas in 2015. We thank the Computer Club for their support in helping the Community Association expand the Wi-Fi on our campus.

ROADS AND SIDEWALKS

We receive a lot of complaints regarding the roads and sidewalks. Hillsborough County is responsible for the vast majority of the roads and sidewalks in Sun City Center. There are a few private roads which are the responsibility of the neighborhood HOA or POA, or the abutting property owners. The Community Association receives complaints about the roads (potholes) and sidewalks (broken or cracked); when we do, we forward the complaints to the county. We often get complaints about stained sidewalks. The county will not clean sidewalks. They will only repair them. However, the sidewalks are easy to clean. The homeowner can mix eight ounces of oxalic acid powder in a gallon of water and spray it on the stained sidewalk, let it sit for several minutes and rinse with clean water. The stains will be removed. Use gloves as the acid/water mixture is corrosive. The Community Association will clean the sidewalks along North Pebble Beach Blvd. in front of the office.

She has a diploma from the Florida Regional Policing Institute at St. Petersburg Community College and has arranged for reps from that program to speak and give training sessions. One experience of note occurred in 2011 when students from Rollins College signed up for a three-day course to study Human Trafficking. The concerns voiced by these students showed that the message was getting through —in June’s words, “I was never involved in social work; this cause is my passion.” But when she witnessed young people willing to take up the cause, she felt her efforts were worthwhile. June is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Sun City Center, Soroptimist International of the Americas (30 years!), the GFWC Woman’s Club and Public Issues Chair and the SCC United Methodist Church. She has been recognized numerous times, including 2010 Pinellas County Victim Services Award, 2010 Largo Mid-Pinellas Chamber of Commerce “Citizen of the Year” award. Since moving to Sun City Center, she was recognized with the 2012 Clearwater/Tampa Bay Area Task Force on Human Trafficking Distinguished Service Award and, in 2013 the GFWC SCC Woman’s Club “Volunteer of the Year” award. A person to be reckoned with, June Wallace, truly a “woman on a mission.”

Minto, founded in 1955, is one of North America’s leading builders, with more than 70,000 homes built—20,000 of them in Florida. The sales center is located at 105 Commercial Center Drive in Sun City Center.

By Phyllis Hodges Fellowship and a desire to assist with health-related community programs— that’s what has drawn retired nurses and other medical professionals to the SCC Registered Nurses Club since it was founded in 1972. The club roster is now 70+ strong. President Lynne Murphy says that their members seek out volunteer opportunities relevant to the health of area residents. A major program until recently was collaboration with the Kiwanis Club to take blood pressures at the CA Atrium. They have a search underway now for another community project. Through the club’s activities, members nurture friendships with those who share common medical knowledge and experiences. “Some of our members come from other countries and have a different knowledge base, so we value their contributions,” Lynne says. “Although we are continually trying to learn and be of service, not everything is serious; we like to have fun too.” The club has social gatherings as well as monthly meetings and field trips and all are well attended. By Agnes Baker June Wallace is a “Woman on a Mission.” June is from upstate New York; a widow with two grown children and four grandchildren. She has a diverse background, some as a result of circumstances that necessitated facing situations such as her son’s critical illness which required a move to a warmer climate. Sarasota was chosen but the move also triggered a divorce and she was left to raise her children, Jeffrey and Donna, with no financial assistance. Facing that situation, June brushed up on her secretarial skills, going to work in an attorney’s office. That move also engineered a meeting with members of the “White Shrine” - a division of the Shriners - who worked with June in obtaining a prosthesis for Jeff, while the “March of Dimes” provided therapy and named him their Easter Seal poster child. She also met and married her second husband, Ron Wallace. With his encouragement, she continued her education and acquired designation as an Enrolled Agent, Certified Financial Planner and Expert Witness in Orange and Seminole counties. A life-changing event came when June attended a Soroptimist International meeting in April, 2009 and, as she related the experience, she had no idea her life was about to change forever, for the speaker was Linda Smith, a former U.S. Representative from the state of Washington. Her topic? Child Sex Trafficking. Listening to this talk June found her “Mission” and immediately went to work, ultimately founding the Tampa Bay Community Campaign against Human Trafficking in Largo, where she lived at the time. When her husband died, June moved to our community and, in 2011, founded the Sun City Center “Community Campaign” while continuing on as a member of the Clearwater/Tampa Bay Area Task Force on Human Trafficking.

developments. (As you might expect, relatives and friends often ask for health advice.) “Nursing is considered one of the most trusted professions in this country today. Each year, it comes out on top or near it,” she says. “Our members are proud of that.”

The SCC Registered Nurses Club will again be taking blood pressures at FunFest March 21.

What’s New at the Library?

By Elaine Birkinshaw Thank you to all who supported the annual library book sale the first weekend of February. We brought in more than $2,000 to help support library services for Sun City Center. We especially thank our maintenance department for transporting the three truckloads of books from the library over to the Atrium Building and our dedicated volunteers who sorted and organized the thousands of items. Although it is a lot of work, we always enjoy seeing the smiles on the happy shoppers walking out the door with their treasures. We are seeing a lot of progress with the library construction project. The new wing now has power and the restrooms are nearing completion. Our request system with Hillsborough County is fully functional again. When we were reactivated in early February, we received over 400 reserve items the first week. Mason Cross’s new hero Carter Blake is an agent who specializes in finding the unfindable. In The Killing Season, the first book in the series, Caleb Wardell, the infamous “Chicago Sniper” has staged a daring escape from Death Row and instead of going to ground is continuing his killing spree across the United States. With a national election hanging in the balance, the FBI brings in Carter Blake to find and stop Wardell by any means possible. Hailed as the most exciting character since Jack Reacher, Carter Blake is a man with unusual skills and talent. The Killing Season is a great debut for a new series of thrillers. For those of you who find real stories more thrilling, few are as fascinating as Deep Down Dark: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine, and the Miracle That Set Them Free by Héctor Tobar. In August of 2010, a chunk of mountain 550 feet tall and twice the weight of the Empire State Building collapsed into a mine in San José, Chile. Thirty-three men were trapped for an incredible sixty-nine days. Pulitzer Prize winner Tobar has spent four years interviewing the miners, their families and their rescuers. Due to his exclusive agreement covering the first seventeen days of their entrapment, Tobar reveals details previously unknown about their miraculous survival. Happy Reading!

Claire is primarily self-taught, complimented by selected community and college classes and art workshops in Ottawa, Brookville, Belleville (Ontario, Canada) and Florida. Her medium of choice today is oil. Pen and ink also hold a distant attraction, Having used ink washes as underpaintings. ‘66 Chevelle Super Sport Is Cruiser of the Month

A pristine and powerful 1966 Chevelle Super Sport owned by Jerry Dixon of Sun City Center is the Roamin’ Oldies February cruiser of the month. The Super Sport was a serious muscle car right from the factory, with a 396-cubic inch V8 and an available 4-speed transmission. Jerry’s car, with the engine upgraded to 496 cubic inches and matched to a five-speed Tremec transmission, is a great deal stronger. A long-time racer and enthusiast, Jerry said he’s been looking for 15 years for the just-right ’66 Chevelle. The one he found only three months ago already is a show winner, and looks to be a formidable competitor should he decide to go back to racing. The Roamin’ Oldies host a cruise-in from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. the first Thursday of every month in the Apollo Beach Winn-Dixie Plaza on US41, with a rain date the following Thursday. There is no charge for spectators or participants, who vote to select the cruiser of the month. About 100 of the area’s finest antique and collectible cars often take part, accompanied by classic oldies music played by DJ Joey Ferrante. The event is sponsored by Thompson’s Auto Parts and Sun City Center Funeral Home. For information, call Chet at 813-842-1511.

Recently published - Synopsis JOYCE LEE McINTOSH: Dancing on the Border Forensic psychologist and New York City cop Leigh Durham is tenaciously in pursuit of Raptor, a fiendish criminal preying on young women. He creates his own unique flock by marking them with a grotesque V symbolizing a bird in flight. The scar will forever remind them of him and what they did together. Leigh’s relentless search for Raptor draws his attention and, fascinated by her, he resolves to make her one of his own. When he forces her to his remote aerie, Leigh must rely on her intellect and training to outwit his cleverness and end Raptor’s reign of terror. Author and clinical psychologist, Joyce Lee McIntosh, draws on personal experiences to create fast moving psychological suspense novels. Her often disreputable characters delight in causing mischief and mayhem, disrupting the romantic entanglements of the heroine. Dancing on the Border is the second in a series featuring the adventures of Leigh Durham. The first novel, Inside Out, received enthusiastic reviews and left the readers asking for more. Dr. McIntosh is an active participant in Florida’s Sun City Center Writers Club and Mid-Michigan Writers. The critiques and encouragement she receives from fellow writers in these groups is invaluable. You may contact the author at docjjmac@myway.com.

Some people watch things happen; others make things happen and Esther Hagen, Sun City Center weaver, does just that! She weaves sleeping mats for the homeless. Esther arrived in SCC from New Jersey eight years ago, and for six of those years was a “snowbird.” Not one to sit around, she joined the Weavers Club, took lessons, and has been weaving ever since. And it is that skill that enables Esther to “Make a Difference.” In the community where she lives she noted a number of people knitting/sewing for others; e.g., hats for veterans who were on chemo; blankets and other items for abused children; caps/jackets for newborns. It was during a trip to Miami on her way to board a ship that she noted homeless people under bridges. That scene made a lasting impression. An avid recycler, she remembered that there were large spools of left-over carpet warp in the weaving room that was not being used. Back home in New Jersey she had used plastic bags (yes, the ones that find their way into landfills and waterways) to make mats to use for wiping feet. Quick and easy to keep clean; great for shedding water. So off she went, collected bags, cut them into strips to use for the weft, dressed two looms with the leftover yarn and started her project. The result: sturdy, lightweight, nice looking mats that are long enough for adults to stretch out on, and easy to roll and carry. A blessing if you are sleeping under a bridge. But how to get them to the ones who needed them? Looking for an answer, she stopped at Beth-El Missions one day. Pleasant onsite workers greeted her and offered to do that job for her! They knew people who could use her mats. They also told her that they could use “sit upons” (small versions of the sleeping mats) for nursery and kindergarten children. Esther is now making mats for children and the homeless. Our “Hats are Off ” to Esther for using her hobby to Make a Difference!!

SCC Swim Dancers Welcome Everyone to their “WHODUNIT “ Aquatic Show

By Dana Ellerbrock When Erma Bombeck was asked what she would change if she had her life to live over, she offered some musings and ended with “given another shot at life, I would seize every minute of it...look at it and really see it...try it on..live it...exhaust it and never give that minute back until there was nothing left of it!” Well, that pretty much sums up the Sun City Center Swim Dancers and their preparation for the 2015 annual synchronized swim show that will be performed in the Atrium indoor lap pool, 961 North Course Lane, on Saturday, March 14, at 2 p.m. Sue Muise, known as Susan to everyone else in Sun City except the swim dancers, developed the concept for the show on the nights she could not sleep. She created a “WHODUNIT” murder mystery plot at the pool. The investigation would be influenced by famous crime scene detectives, familiar policemen and lawyers, with a murder mystery writer thrown in for good measure. The swim dancers loved the story when presented last spring. First, they made Sue the Show Director, then everyone took some aspect of the show and ran with it. The swim dancers reviewed hundreds of movie and television theme songs that applied to the plot. The gals who volunteered to choreograph a swim number, selected a song and designed a swim routine constructed from familiar synchronized swim figures. Most of the theme songs in this category are instrumentals, no words, like the theme from Pink Panther, and the tune from Law and Order. Lovely music to listen to, twice as hard to swim to, with no words as clues, the whole number requires the swimmers to count. More than half the songs are instrumental, and the count has to be perfect if the swimming is to be synchronized! When the swimmers are not perfecting swim routines, they are designing and creating costumes that will take the abuse of water and not restrict movement. Sewing hands are reconstructing thrift store finds and new fabrics into criminal system costumes, knitting hands are clinking together creative hats, craft hands are fabricating props, shopping hands are searching for accessories and measuring hands are fitting all of the above to coral swimsuit covered bodies. Non-swimmers too are pulled into the current of activity. The audio engineers at the Atrium installed new speakers at the pool, enhancing the music played plus the sound delivery of John Bowker, a professional announcer, who offered to return for this year’s show as the Master of Ceremonies. Joe Elam, the lost tourist from last year’s show, is offering his theatrical talent this year as Inspector Steve McGarrett (Hawaii Five-0) who just happens to be on vacation in Sun City Center from Hawaii. Former swimmer and creative genius, Ilona Merritt, is generating all the graphic designs for the show, from posters, to tickets to programs. Husbands and friends are playing music during practice, taking photographs and videos, making props, and running errands. If that isn’t enough activity, the Swim Dancers have invited another senior synchronized swim team from Palm Harbor, the Synchro-Belles to join in the swim fun. They are bringing their Synchro-Stars, ages 7-9, who will swim to the music of Peter Gunn. Hot off the press tickets will be available at the ticket kiosk for a donation of $3 on March 9-13 (M-F) from 9 a.m. to noon. Swim dancers will also have tickets and any remaining tickets will be available at the door. The hour-long show will be filled with style and grace and fun and mischief!

The South Shore Symphony Orchestra will present its next concert, “Destinations,” on Sunday, March 8, 2015, at United Community Church, in Sun City Center. The church is at 1501 La Jolla Avenue. The concert will be in the sanctuary of the church and will begin at 4 p.m. Tickets are available at the church office and can also be purchased at the door. Tickets are $15 (free for children under the age of 10). The concert will highlight various travel destinations, such as Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite and Smetana’s The Moldau (Czechoslovakia). Also featured on the concert are the first movement of Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in B Minor (Czechoslovakia), the Gershwin/Whitney An American in Paris Suite (France), Ford’s Blunderbuss Battles (high seas), and John Williams’ Star Wars (outer space). The South Shore Symphony made its Sun City Center debut on May 21, 2010. Since then it has grown significantly in size and quality. It features professional musicians from all over the Tampa Bay area who are committed to offering the South Shore community excellent light classical and pops music. The orchestra is very happy at its new home, The United Community Church. The Conductor and Artistic Director of the SSSO is June C. Hammond who holds a Doctor of Music degree from The Florida State University has done post-doctoral study in orchestral conducting at the University of South Florida. Music selections will include the first movement of the Dvorak cello concerto, The Moldau, An American in Paris Suite, English Folk Song Suite, Blunderbuss Battles, and Star Wars.

The Pelican Players: A Legacy Of Giving

By Ilona Merritt The Pelican Players is a robust community theatre group whose philanthropy is alive and well. The group recently gifted $12,000 to the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, bringing their total endowment, The Pelican Players Scholarship Fund, to over $30,000. “We are very proud to be in a position to provide financial assistance to students majoring in the performing arts,” states Linda Halperin, President of The Pelican Players. The Board of Directors works diligently to ensure that their productions are as financially successful as they are entertaining. In 2014 this was particularly true. Their productions included “Sylvia,” “The Queen of Bingo,” and “The Cemetery Club.” On average, more than 1,000 people attended each production. As a 50l(c)(3) organization, The Pelican Players donates twenty percent of its proceeds to The Pelican Players Scholarship Fund. The Pelican Players established the Fund with a gift of $18,000 to the Community Foundation in 2013. As a life-long endowment, the interest on the fund supports local college students majoring in the arts who meet the scholastic and financial criteria defined by The Players. And as the endowment grows, there is more money available for financial aid. “This is a win-win for Pelican and for the Community Foundation, which supports so many worthwhile causes in the Tampa Bay area,” states Pelican’s Treasurer, Wendy Smith. The Pelican Players has a long history of providing scholarships to local high school students with an interest in the arts. In fact, along with endowing The Pelican Players Scholarship Fund, they continue to support the scholarship students chosen before 2013. Until those students complete their college degrees, they receive $1,000 per semester from the Pelican Players. The Pelican Players next production, “All The King’s Women,” a charming and funny play that recounts stories about the King of Rock ‘n Roll and his impact on the people and culture of the times, can be seen on March 12, 13, and 14 in the Borini Theatre. Tickets are available for $15 at the Kings Point Box Office. The Pelican Players invites the participation of all Sun City Center residents. “Anyone interested in performing onstage, working back stage, or just being in the audience is welcome to become a member. A love of theatre is all that is required,” states Linda Halperin.

To die with dignity; Affirming I’ve passed through.” © February 2015 Suzanne S. Austin-Hill

Meet Our New District Commander By Kai Rambow While working undercover, Rob Bullara, identified himself as a law enforcement officer to a drug dealer. The dealer didn’t register that he was under arrest and asked, “How many of those badges can you get me?” A memorable and funny moment for our new District 4 Commander, Major Rob Bullara. “Every day is something a little different,” reflects Bullara, “and it’s been that way regardless of the position I’ve held.” Rob Bullara’s wide range of experience started in the jail, then on patrol, narcotics, recruitment, screening, administration, operations, homicide, shift commander and child protective investigations. A few courses at college led him to select criminal justice as his major and law enforcement as his career. Bullara rotated through South Hillsborough County several times during his 33 years with the Sheriff ’s department. “When I was first assigned in 1981, we had three patrol cars operating out of Ybor City to cover the south. I’ve lived in Tampa all my life, but had never been to Wimauma until I started working here. I’ve seen the population grow and districts created to better serve the community.” Change is also reflected in Bullara’s love of sports, particularly baseball. “My favorite moments have been anytime the Yankees won the World Series. People often question my love for the Yankees. When I grew up,

there wasn’t a baseball team here, and the Yankees were not a good team.” Today he follows the Yankees and the Rays. While many baseball fans want to watch a game in every major ballpark, Bullara prefers to collect pins and to coach. He has coached little league teams with several of those teams competing successfully over the years. And it seems as if each pin in his collection tells a story. Major Bullara is serious about his profession, yet relaxed in his interaction with others. He completed a Master’s in Education to aid in courses he’s taught at HCC and course design for the department. He also has a wonderful sense of humor. When he learned the staff of The News wanted to know the secret to getting out of speeding tickets, he laughed heartily. (By the way, do not use the excuse, “I’m in a hurry to get to a bathroom.”) Bullara looks forward to working with the community here once again in his new role.

New Softball Field Open

Submitted by the Softball Club Build it they will come ! Sun City Center Softball field received a much needed facelift, and the first game on the new field was played January 30th. Ten teams and 120 players played on the new field. Sun City Center softball began thirty-five years ago, in 1980, where the current Freedom Plaza now sits. Don Senk took the time to clear that first field so teams could “Play ball!” Eleven years later, in 1986, the Community Association began talking about building a sports complex where it currently stands on South Pebble Beach. In 1991, the softball field was moved to Ruskin while waiting on their new field to be completed. In 1993 the field was dedicated to Bill Van Dine and Don Senk. Over the years, changes were made. A bleacher section was added along with a pavilion where hot dogs and hamburgers are made every Friday afternoon by the Diamondnettes. Fences were added and permanent covers were put over the dugouts. Many names are on plaques where players MVP and other achievements are listed. Today the field looks very different. We took out the grass and the red dirt is gone. A company out of Pennsylvania called Dura Edge leveled the field and laid out several truckloads of dirt. No longer is first base higher than the third base side. The new surface is tremendous! Over the years hundreds of players have played on the field. Don Senk passed away in 2014. We know he was looking down when that first pitch was thrown out! The club would like to thank Lynn Reitz and Michael Chute for helping us achieve our goal. CA officials and members of the Board of Directors helped softball players and fans dedicate the new field on February 17. The dedication and re-opening celebration was a fun and elegant event!

The new field looks spectacular and ready for action!

L to R: CA Director Sam Sudman, CA President David Floyd, Softball Club leader Lou Klusty, CA Community Manager Lyn Reitz, Michael Robinson of Dura Edge (the contracting company that did the extensive work), Softball Club President Doug Seipelt, CA Director Joe Elam, and CA Maintenance Manager, Michael Chute.

Suncoasters Singles Champ for 2015

LAWN BOWLING

Eleven lady lawn bowlers began the competition for the coveted title of Suncoasters Singles Champion in a single knockout elimination tournament, originally to be played over four afternoons. With two rain days canceling play at the beginning and towards the end of the tournament, it stretched to six days when the two finalists were Chris Heller and Diann Thomas.

Some excellent lawn bowling was watched by spectators on all four play days and in various types of weather conditions. Strong winds were the most prominent of these on the final day when 24 onlookers watched as the two ladies battled for the title. Chris took an early lead but Diann then put on a spurt to bring the scores closer but after 24 ends Chris (pictured) prevailed and achieved the 21 points needed to win the game and title of Suncoasters Singles Champion for 2015. The Suncoasters Club is part of the Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club that will be holding an Open House day on February 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All SCC community residents are invited to attend and learn more about the

game - one that can be enjoyed by men and women of all ages - and the club. Demonstration games will be played and basic lessons given, so come out and give it a try. Free lessons are also given every month from November to April. For more information about the club and lawn bowling, visit our website at www.suncitycenterlbc.com.

By Marge Lange The 26th of January, on a very windy Florida day, we had 32 people watching the final match of our club’s mixed pairs tournament. The wind can have a direct impact on the bowl so needless to say the bowlers were bowling in adverse weather conditions. When that happens, we never know just what to expect. However, both Linda Hawken, Skip, and Dave Clarke, Lead, nailed the draw and brought the bowls in to score points for their team. We congratulate them for their first place win. They became the top winners in the club’s mixed pairs game. Coming in second were their opponents Jim Bryne, Skip, and Kathy Gonnella, Lead.

Emergency Squad Vial of Life and DNR’s

When you have a health emergency in your home, there are several documents that will assist paramedics and EMT’s in determining how best to assist you. The Vial of Life may not be an actual vial, but contains important medical documents that can assist medics when they are assessing your health. These documents include your list of current medications, allergies, and previous health history. If you are computer literate, you can make this list, save it and update it on your computer. Once that is done, fold it up, put it in an empty medication bottle and place it inside the refrigerator door. This is where medics will look for that information. Too much information to put in a bottle? Attach it to the refrigerator with a refrigerator magnet. If you do not use a computer, stop by the Emergency Squad and pick up a Vial of Life at our front desk. This bottle contains pink and blue forms – one for the lady of the house and one for the man. Fill them out as completely as possible, but your medications, history and allergies are the most critical pieces of information. Make sure this information gets updated as your health changes. When the Emergency Squad responds to a call for someone who is “unresponsive,” we will ask the spouse or caregiver if the patient has a DNR. What is a DNR form? A Do Not Resuscitate Order is an important document to aid EMT’s, paramedics, doctors and nurses in identifying those people who do not wish to be resuscitated in the event of cardiac or respiratory arrest. When a patient has suffered a cardiac or respiratory arrest and is essentially dead, a DNR means that CPR will not be initiated. It does not mean that care will not be provided if a patient is having an active heart attack and is still breathing. To be a legal document, the DNR must be on yellow paper, properly signed by a competent patient or their representative and a licensed Florida physician. It should be easy to find and available at a moments notice. Ask your doctor if their office has DNR forms, stop by the Squad to pick up a form or you can go to the State website at: http://www.floridahealth.gov/about-the-department-of-health/about-us/patientrights-and-safety/do-not-resuscitate/index.html

Security Patrol Security Patrol Volunteer of the Month

By Lynn Knapp Tom O’Meara is a long-time resident of Sun City Center. He moved here from Michigan with his wife in 1989 and has enjoyed it ever since. He was an avid golfer in Michigan and continued to play here. One day as he backed his golf cart out to play on one of our golf courses, he thought to himself, “Lord, give me five years of this great life and I won’t complain.” Twenty-six years later, he is still enthusiastic about Sun City Center. He is also enthusiastic about Security Patrol which he has served for nearly all those twenty-six years as a driver and now dispatcher. One of Tom’s neighbors was Captain of Team 30 and a fellow golfer. He said he knew Tom needed a couple of months to settle in before joining the Patrol. His neighbor didn’t say anything about quitting the Patrol. Tom feels that Security Patrol is a worthwhile endeavor where he can serve and help others in the community. He has seen numerous instances where Patrol drivers have found lost people and lost dogs. It is always a happy occasion when the Patrol reunites a pet with its owner. Dog lovers themselves, Tom and his wife were active in supporting the Southeastern Guide Dog facility in Parrish where they walked the dogs and helped in other ways. One day when he was driving for the Patrol, Tom noticed that the front door of a home was wide open. He got the address and notified the dispatcher who called the sheriff. A deputy sheriff arrived soon and secured the home. These are just a few of the many ways that Tom has given assistance as a valued member of the Security Patrol.

The Emergency Squad Announce New Emergency Medical Responders

Patrol Board President/Acting Chief Karen Ryan (r) congratulates the Patrol Volunteers who have served 20 or more years.

Robin Watt The Emergency Squad is pleased to announce its newest Emergency Medical Responders from its January class. Emergency Medical Responders go through 40 hours of training in addition to 8 hours of CPR class. They must pass CPR in order to become an EMR. After finishing the class, all the volunteers go through mentoring. Pictured below, back row. Elaine Shaefer Asst. Emergency Squad Featured Volunteers for January Tom and Marty Mallak

By Robin Watt Marty Mallak moved to Sun City Center in September of 1994 and joined the Squad the very next month. She met Tom in 1997 while she was in EMT school and they married within a year. Soon after, Marty convinced Tom to join the Squad where he became an ambulance driver. Unfortunately, after two hip replacements, duty as an ambulance driver became too difficult and he became a wheelchair van driver. Marty worked as an EMT until 2008 when two knee replacements kept her off of the ambulance. It was then that Chief Christine Patrick asked her to become Captain of Team 5. She served there for two years and then she also became a Wheelchair van driver. She has since switched to dispatching. Like many of our volunteers, Marty and Tom found that as their health changed, there were still other volunteer jobs they could do to serve the community. Marty has held an abundance of positions including Captain, Assistant Chief and Chief. Tom, she says, has consistently supported her 110%. Tom decided to retire from the Squad at the end of January after 17-plus years of faithful and devoted service as a driver. Marty still serves as dispatcher and Asst. Captain on Team 5. Together they have served their community for over 38 years. It is an honor and privilege to have such a dedicated and committed couple on the Squad. Thank you for your service and Tom, you will be missed.

On January 22, 2015 the Sun City Center Security Patrol held its Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at Community Hall. Luncheon Chair Barbara Lewis reported over 500 members attended the event, the largest Appreciation Luncheon in the Patrol’s history. A catered lunch by Sun Coast Caterers included beverages, salad, three entrees, rolls, and dessert. Entertainment followed with an outstanding performance by The Sun City Center Men’s Chorus. Patrol Captain Tom Hinkebein astounded his fellow patrol members with an ‘a capella’ performance. The “Metamucil Mama’s” a three-woman comedy group, sang a hilarious parody of “My Favorite Things.” Leading the comedy trio was Patrol Captain Uta Kuhn. Adding to the enjoyment were door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Nine restaurants, thirteen Sun City Center clubs, eighteen local businesses, and one patrol member, donated a number of door prizes. The items donated by clubs included artwork, a shell canvas picture, jewelry, woodwork and other assorted crafts. Restaurants donated gift certificates for free or discounted meals, while businesses included several beauty salons, barber shops, jewelry, golf cart discounts, and clothing. The 50/50 raffle netted the winner over $500. The Patrol is very grateful to the clubs, restaurants and local businesses for their generosity. After completing his enlistment, he Brown, president of local MOAA. graduated from college and worked in retail management for several years. Answering a ‘call to ministry,’ he attended seminary and was ordained in the United Methodist Church. While serving as a local pastor, he joined the Ohio Air National Guard as a chaplain. In 1993, he began his career as an active duty chaplain. His assignments included numerous stateside bases, Howard AFB, Panama; Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan and five deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Sam discussed the recent policy changes that have adversely affected the service chaplains. In particular he discussed the constitutionality of the services inhibiting what chaplains have always done, i.e., openly advocating specific religions and beliefs. Freedom of religion has not been barred, but it has become harder and harder to openly profess. His comments were very well received by the members.

MOAA Presents Operation Warmheart Donation

By B. F. Kepley, CAPT USN (Ret), Military Correspondent The Military Officers of America (MOAA) presented a check for $2,100 to the MacDill First Sergeant Council to assist in supporting Operation Warmheart (OWH). The donation was presented to First Sergeants representatives from MacDill AFB at the SCC Atrium on February 2, at the monthly MOAA luncheon. Representing the First Sergeants Council from left in photo above were MSgt’s Anthony Cruz, Aaron Bonham and Todd Schuler. Thom Brown, on right, president of the local chapter of MOAA, presented the check. MSgt’s Schuler and Cruz provided the group with an overview of the First Sergeants Council functions. Operation Warmheart, is an organization that assists families in all branches of the military in time of need. One of its primary missions is to provide emergency grants to MacDill AFB members. They also provide various types of gift cards and gasoline and in general provide morale, health and welfare assistance to as many needy military families as funds will allow. They are able to act quickly when other charitable organizations are unable to render aid in a timely manner.

Hospice Comes to SCC

By Agnes Baker The first hospice legislation, introduced in 1974, was not acted upon. However, Connecticut Hospice, Inc. opened in spite of this setback and, with assistance from the National Cancer Institute, a program was established to study home care for the terminally ill. Pleased with the results, the NCA continued the study with this project ending in 1980. Congress acted a number of times to enhance and expand hospice care. In 1986, the Medicare Hospice Benefits were made permanent and included entry in military hospitals or under CAMPUS. Additionally, hospice care was included in the veterans’ package. In 1993, the President included hospice in the basic health package as a nationally guaranteed benefit and it is now an accepted part of the health care program. We must give credit to Florida’s Congressman Sam Gibbons for his tireless efforts working with the Medicare systems and with the veterans’

groups to assure the best benefits allowable were introduced and, in most cases, passed. The number of hospices participating in the Medicare program grew from 31 in 1984 to 1,288 in 1993. Where do these facts lead us? Right here, folks! Right here to our community where, in 1994, a group of dedicated individuals organized as “Friends of Hospice Auxiliary of Sun City Center.” Several speakers explained the need for a concerted effort in obtaining the funds needed to support the facility and Sun City Center resident, Betty Pettersson, spoke of her visit to an established hospice house in Venice, Florida. This began a year of educating their neighbors about hospice and the need to raise funds to support this special program. With speakers outlining the benefits of having a hospice facility in Sun City Center, this enthused group, under the guidance of first president Joyce Mather began working towards a required 1.1 million dollars,

which seemed to be an impossible task, but the funds started coming in, albeit slowly. Then, a tremendous boost in funding and to lift up sagging spirits was a large bequest from the estate of Kathryn LeBeau! Special thanks to Ray and Ann Purcell, who became known as the “Dynamic Duo” as they worked tirelessly to assure the construction of the South County Hospice House, and to Sam Kupper, Clare Falkner, Susanne Proch, Ruth Anderson, Sarah Buckwalter, Eleanor Gladiszewski, Rebecca Kull, Betty Pettersson, Dick May, and Lee Albrecht, first secretary. If we missed any, our apologies. The artist’s rendering was completed

on January 26, 1999, and construction began in January 2001 at the site on American Eagle Drive. Construction was completed and the new facility was dedicated on August 9, 2001. Hundreds came out to tour the facility and listen to Ms. Kathy Fernandez, President/CEO of LifePath Hospice who, in her speech, called this “A Dream Come True,” giving recognition to the many volunteers who had worked so tirelessly for over six years. Oh, Yes—a true labor of love come to fruition thanks to a dedicated group of Sun City Center Residents. Next Month: The opening of the South County Hospice House.

Any submissions to News of Sun City Center should be sent one of three ways: 1 Through the submissions link at www.NewsofSunCityCenter.com 2 Via email at “newsofscc.ca@gmail.com” If you choose this format, send the text of the email IN the email body and attach all photo images (jpeg, png, pdf) 3 If you prefer, submitting text via an attached Word .doc or .docx is acceptable.

News of Freedom Plaza By Peggy Burgess March at Freedom Plaza will be a month of magnolias and mint juleps with preparations for Gone With the Breeze in full swing. We will put things on hold to celebrate St. Patty’s Day, of course, for the O’Hara’s of Tara, setting for Gone with the Wind, were, after all, Irish. Gone with the Breeze, our comedic spoof of Margaret Mitchell’s famous novel and film classic, will mark the 23rd production of Freedom Frolics, an annual stage show benefitting the Freedom Plaza Scholarship Fund. It is slated for April 10 and 11, curtain time 7:30 p.m. in the Freedom Plaza Auditorium. Tickets are $10. Initiated in 1992, the Frolics began as a resident talent show embellished with an original comedy skit. The next year brought a more prominent story line; next, music was added. By Freedom Frolics IV, the show was fully scripted, with scenery, costumes and musical parodies highlighting the action. As Frolics grew, so did its cast, for it

was--and remains--open to any resident who wishes to participate. There are no auditions. Everyone who wants to be onstage gets onstage, if only as a “walkon” or in a group. The 2014 Freedom Frolics cast numbered forty-eight and this year’s company will probably equal or exceed it. Residents enjoy being in Freedom Frolics for several reasons, not the least of which is because it is simply lots of fun; “having fun for the Fund” is the way they put it. Memorization is minimal with off-stage narration and lip-sync freely utilized …though there are some speaking parts, as well, for those who prefer a greater theatrical challenge. Fun though it may be, the primary

reason residents keep signing up, year after year, to spend their time and energy in Frolics is that they can witness their investment first hand and on a daily basis. Freedom Plaza Scholarship recipients are the hourly employees who keep residents’ lives comfortable: the dining service wait staff; the housekeepers; the office personnel; the nurses and aids at Plaza West Health Care Center. To date, the Freedom Plaza Scholarship Fund, a resident-directed corporation, has awarded grants for both traditional and non-traditional education totaling over $600,000, all of it generated at Freedom Plaza. Freedom Frolics is the organization’s major fundraiser. As steeped in the Old South as the

2015 Frolics may be, good old Yankee ingenuity will likely play a vital part in its production. The Woodworkers building the stage set, the Art League members painting scenery, the resident seamstresses sewing costumes, plus the numerous people involved in other auxiliary roles are all of varying backgrounds. Many of them are bound to be Yankees. But unlike the harsh reality of the Civil War, or even in the classic movie model, in Gone With the Breeze the Yankees and the Rebels meet happily and humorously, and for a good cause. To enjoy a heapin’ helpin’ of this hilarious example of Southern hospitality call 642-1215 during business hours for ticket purchase information. Nominees for Freedom Plaza’s 2015 From the Heart Award are, Luke Amato, Judi Allen, Ray Adams, Sandy Bryson, Laura Borak, Helen Bredehoft, Sarah Chambers, Marjorie Chandler, Frank Daniels, Ann Graff, David Houck, David Nicholson, Terry O’Niell, Kathleen Riviello, Ann Marie Vercelli and Dorothy Wagasky.

Tax Club Salutes the United Community Church for 26 Years of Support for Free Tax Return Filing in Sun City Center

Submitted by Bob Larson The Sun City Center Tax-Aide program will celebrate their 26th year doing free tax returns for the residents of the Greater Sun City Center area at the United Community Church at La Jolla Avenue and North Pebble Beach Boulevard. This AARP Foundation affiliate, with an all-volunteer staff of local residents, assisted more than 6,000 people during last year’s tax season! This remarkable total was accomplished by 58 Sun City Center volunteers who worked more than 4,000 hours at the United Community Church and the Ruskin Neighborhood Center preparing over 3,200 federal 1040 returns and assisting many shut-ins with their taxes. In addition, 19 Kings Point residents were trained in tax preparation law, filing procedure, and in e-filing tax returns by

computer and they e-filed an additional 900 returns. Nine more volunteers arranged the appointments, greeted clients, and helped them identify the records needed. Tax-aide volunteers assisted older persons and working poor from Riverview, Gibsonton, Ruskin, Lithia, Wimauma, Apollo Beach, and Balm as well as Sun City Center. Eighty five percent of their clients were over 60 years old. The returns they filed resulted in $5.4 million in tax revenue with more than $1.9 million in tax refunds, $93,000 in child tax credits, and $217,000 in earned income credits for local residents. The IRS estimates that they save local residents more than $400,000 in tax preparation fees. Marilyn Wilson, the program local coordinator, advises everyone to bring photo ID and Social Security cards

or Social Security statements for all persons mentioned in the return, including dependents. Bring a copy of death certificate for any spouse deceased in 2013 or 2014. Bring a copy of any Power of Attorney if you plan to sign the return for that person. We need last year’s tax return, current W-2 forms from employers, 1099 forms for interest, dividends, stock sales, pensions, and IRA distributions. Please gather information about the purchase date and purchase price of any stock, etc. sold

in 2014. Be sure to bring an accurate list of any estimated tax payments you sent to the IRS. Bring information about any potentially deductible health insurance plan premiums you or your employer paid and any forms 1095 or other Marketplace forms you received. The Beach is Not Number One

Even though Amelia has one of the widest beaches, the number one attraction is Fort Clinch State Park. The fort served as a military outpost during the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World War II. Visitors are most interested in what the fort was like during the Civil War. Period-costumed interpreters bring history to life. Our interpreter had a great sense of humor, making the visit fun.

A Variety of Activities

Walking the wonderful, wide beaches is a top choice. Additional active pursuits span a range. There are plenty of trails to hike or if you prefer there are trails to bike. If you’d rather not bike, you can rent a scooter to explore. On the inland coastal waterway, you can kayak and quietly view the wildlife. If you’d rather not break into a sweat there are pontoon boat tours to view the island, wildlife (including tourists), and even Fort Clinch. Or if you’re looking for speed, there are motorized, no-sail catamarans – something I’d never seen before. More traditional activities include several golf courses nestled in the beauty of the island. Strolling the picturesque town of Fernandina Beach, window shopping and eating in one of the many restaurants fits a leisurely pace. Quite a few of the buildings in town are historic. The wide variety means you can be active, relax or mix it up. It adds up to a memorable and fun visit.

Good Choices for Places to Stay and Eat

Amelia Island has everything ranging from inexpensive hotels to B&Bs to

a Ritz-Carlton. You will also need to decide whether you want to be close to the beach or in town. Locations are close to each other and parking is available, so you can stay in one place and get to the other easily. Prices will, of course, be higher during the summer season. Prices for restaurants were slightly higher as there are fewer chain restaurants and more locally owned and operated ones on the island and in town. However, no real difference when compared to some restaurants closer to home.

Tips for a Great Trip

When to Go: Many people think of October and May as two of the best months here in Florida with great temperatures and relatively low humidity. These would be two great times to make this trip. You’ll have the added benefit of fewer tourists and lower prices. Note: Watch out for event weekends. If you want quiet, avoid such weekends. If you want to attend the book, blues, jazz, wine or antique cars festivals, it may add something extra. Driving: It may be suggested to drive north to Ocala and then cut across the state to reach Jacksonville. Don’t bother. The drive is no more scenic than on I-95 and the constant changes in speed ranging from 35 to 70 miles per hour will be frustrating. The drive will take approximately four hours. Finding Everything: Amelia Island is well prepared. Be sure to visit their web site and get a booklet upon arrival. The booklet is well organized and can help you find everything you need to have a great stay. Web site: www.ameliaisland. com

Feline Folks

Have you ever wondered about the sizable outdoor cat population here in Sun City Center? Most of these “Free Roaming Community Cats” are feral; cats that are born in the wild and not socialized to humans. Included in this mix are domesticated social cats, who are lost or abandoned by owners who are unable or unwilling to care for them. Feral cats are beneficial to our environment. Born hunters, they control the local rodent/snake population. Feral cats or “Community Cats” are a universal fact of life, and are managed and maintained by various organizations throughout the United States. Catalina Island, California, and Key West, Florida, support feral cat colonies. Locally, Feline Folks was created to reduce the large number of homeless, unwanted cats, by initiating a TNVR (Trap/ Neuter/ Vaccinate/Return) program. This effort entails humanely trapping, transporting for spay/neuter by a veterinarian, aftercare, and subsequent return to their outdoor colonies. Also, while in surgery the left tip of each cat’s ear is removed. This is called “Ear Tipping” & is a universal sign that is used to determine if a cat is sterilized. As a result of TNVR the feral cat population stabilizes. Zero population growth, no more kittens! The behaviors and stresses associated with mating, such as roaming, yowling, and fighting subside. Killing of these cats as a means of control is considered inhumane and ineffective. Studies demonstrate that TNVR is the single most compassionate and effective program to reduce the free roaming cat numbers over time. In addition to TNVR, the cat colonies are fed once daily by dedicated Feline Folks volunteers or other community members. Feral cats do best when not overfed. Keeping them slim is not only beneficial to their health but it keeps the cats hunting; fewer snakes and rodents. To learn more about our resident free roaming cat population and the mission of Feline Folks log onto the Feline Folks website: www.felinefolks.us. If you would like to speak to a member of Feline Folks or wish to make a donation of food or money, visit Feline Folks in the Kings Point North Club House lobby any Thursday morning from 10 a.m. to noon. The Sun City Center Chamber of Commerce also has a food barrel for donations of canned and unopened dry cat food. Cadence Bank, located in the Publix shopping court, is sponsoring a food drop and information table March 30 through April 3. Monetary donations may be made through PayPal on the Feline Folks website: www.felinefolks.us or mailed to: Feline Folks PO Box 6294 Sun City Center, Fl. 33571-6294 Watch for future articles about Feline Folks, including some of their success stories and ways you can help our “Community Cats.” Kindness counts!

Our Lady’s Pantry Needs Your Help

By Paula Lickfeldt w/ Tom Bullaro Our Lady’s Pantry, in Wimauma, is hopeful of expanding so the people of the area will be better served. In 1999, when the food pantry first opened, 20 families weekly were given food. The number of families given food in 2005 broke 100 a week and, in 2014, 195 families a week were fed. Each family is given 60-80 pounds of food a week. A new building with more space to keep the food, both perishable and nonperishable, and to better serve the community, is desperately needed. The majority of the money used to buy the food comes from The Knights of Columbus, the Nearly New Shop and the Community Foundation. Using the donated dollars, Our Lady’s Pantry is able to purchase food from “Feed America Tampa Bay” for 18 cents a pound. Food is also donated by many The Building Committee of Our Lady’s Pantry includes -- from left to right: Tom and Anita Bullaro, Brian McNamara, Ray Lennon, Frederick Lamitte, and Bob Buchowski. area groups and organizations. in this space are seven stand-alone freezers and two refrigerators. “The new building will have a bigger parking lot, allowing a better flow of traffic for cars coming and going, and people walking here and there. It will, therefore, be safer for everyone.” According to Bullaro, the new Pantry, which will be 50 feet by 80 feet, for a total of 4,000 square feet, also will be located on the grounds of Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission. If your Sun City Center or King’s Point club or organization is searching for an important 501 (c)(3) nonprofit to help support, a representation of Our Lady’s Pantry would love to talk with you. Contact Tom Bullaro, director, or his wife Anita at 813-741-2000. The building plans have been completed and have been approved by the diocese. All of the necessary permit applications are at the county engineer’s office for review. The expanded pantry is moving forward. Construction is estimated to cost $150,000. Construction can begin when half of the funding $75,000 is in hand. A total of $22,355 had been donated thus far.

Faith & Service Redeemer Lutheran Women to Meet

The women’s organization of Redeemer Lutheran Church (Women of the ELCA) will meet on Wednesday, March 18 beginning with refreshments at 9:30 a.m. The 10 a.m. program will be a presentation by Sigi Espino on Kuna Handcrafts. The Kuna are an Indian tribe living in the San Blas archipel of Panama. Today there are about 40 to 45,000 of them. The traditional dress of a Kuna woman consists of a patterned blue cotton wrappen skirt, red and yellow headscarf, arm and leg beads, gold nose ring, earrings, and the many layered and finely sewn mola panel blouse, the Mola. The artistry of a mola reflects a synthesis of traditional Kuna culture with influences of the modern world. Mola art developed when Kuna women began access to store bought yard material, mainly colored cotton. Mola designs were first inspired by geometric body paintings, by Kuna mythology, legends, and by nature. In modern times they are influenced by posters, political adds, commercial labels, books and TV cartoons as well as daily living. Samples of Molas and what can be made out of them will be shown in the presentation. Everyone is invited to attend. For more information, call 813-634-1292.

Cameroon Missionaries Speak at Trinity

Trinity Baptist Church, in Sun City Center, recently hosted a visit by Missionaries Tim and Amy Moline, who serve in Cameroon, West Africa. Cameroon is one-third Muslim and two-thirds Christian. English and French are the official languages, complimented by some 270 tribal group languages. The Molines serve in an English speaking area. Cameroon is one of the most corrupt countries in the world and that is a constant challenge for them and the residents of the country. They presented an overview of their work at the evening service and explained that their mission is to multiply Christian leaders and strengthen churches. They serve at the Cameroon Baptist Theological Seminary (CBTS), which provides education from primary school through the Master’s degree level and has 250 students per year. CBTS trains Cameroonian missionaries, who serve in remote villages and reach thousands of people. A lot of new churches are being started and there is a real need to strengthen and grow them. A reception was held after the service, which provided more time for the Moline’s to discuss their work and to answer questions from the attendees. Saint Anne Dedicates New Facility

The weekend of February 14 and 15 marked a new milestone for the Saint Anne Food Pantry, located on the church campus at 106 11th Ave. N.E. in Ruskin. Parishioners and community representatives joined in the celebration as South Hillsborough’s newest facility was blessed by Very Rev. John F. McEvoy, Pastor of St. Anne Catholic Church, on Saturday evening and again on Sunday morning. In honor of the celebration, Food Pantry volunteers from the Saint Anne outreach ministry prepared a light reception following both observances. The 4,000 square foot facility was filled to capacity on both days. The Food Pantry Committee and volunteer staff members have worked very diligently over the past four years to make this vision a reality. This accomplishment is truly a community event. The donations of both long-time and new parishioners, and the very generous contributions and grants of the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, The Simmons Foundation, the Community Foundation of Greater Sun City Center, and The Interfaith Council have resulted in a debt-free building. The greater South Shore Community is ultimately the recipient of this cooperative effort. More information about Saint Anne Catholic Church is available on its website: www.SaintAnneRuskin.org.
