Creation to steal your heart t gives me great pleasure to point out that the country's handicraft sector has done exceedingly well and overcome the recession. Data from the Export Promotion Council for Handicraft (EPCH) shows that there was an 19.42 per cent increase in handicraft exports during April-February 2011-12. Exports for the period stood at $2016.36 million against $1688.42 million in the same period last fiscal. It is not that there is no demand from countries like the USA and those in Europe. In fact, the demand is picking up but it is yet to

I

As an industry we have been demanding the continuation of the Generalised System of Preference. The US has a GSP programme under which preferential duty free treatment is accorded to over 3,400 products from 131 countries. The US Congress extended authorisation of GSP beyond December 31, 2010 but adjourned without extending the GSP benefits. As a result, goods arriving in the US today are subject to normal trade - related duties. We are asking the government to request the US government to reconsider its decision and extend GSP.

Our handicraftspersons have proved to the world that 'Made in India' means nothing but the best in design and quality. What is even more important is that we have the capability to compete in this fast moving fashion jewellery and accessories market and come out on top Arvind Vadhera (Chairman, EPCH) reach the peak that was seen in 2008. While the US and Europe account for around 60 per cent of the industry's overall exports, we are optimistic that the Handicrafts industry will be able to get back some markets even with the present condition of the US economy. The EPCH, on its part, has worked out a market diversification strategy that is indeed paying off. We are exploring markets like Far East, Middle East, CIS nations and Central Europe. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade has been requested to include 30 more products under the focus products list in the present 42 products. 4 I APRIL2012

Our members may be aware that a number of measures have been taken by the Government of India to facilitate as well as increase growth in exports of handicrafts. On our part, we have recommended certain measures to the DGFT that have been taken note of. We have been assured that after proper examination of these recommendations, they would probably be implemented in the near future. It also gives me great pleasure to inform that EPCH recently initiated a programme to encourage and support women entrepreneurs. EPCH has made vigorous efforts to increase exports from India and the staging of the IFJAS is part of the Council's drive to promote the handicrafts sector. We invite you to be a part of this extravagant success story. e saw the back of the recession and the export of handicrafts rose to $ 128.59 million in February 2012 with the growing demand from the traditional markets in the US and Europe. Indeed, there is a good demand for handicrafts, mainly from the US and European markets. However, today with the international economy in the doldrums once again, we could look at alternative markets. It might be of interest to EPCH members that despite the problems that the global economy is going through, we were invited to display our products at the prestigious five-day-long New York International Gift Fair (NYIGF 2011) at the Jacobs K. Javits Convention Centre. More than 30 Indian companies participated within the India Pavilion. Though the largest participation was from the American continent, many other countries

our part, we have recommended certain measures to the DGFT. Ever since the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) was set up as an apex body up by the Ministry of Textiles in 1986 to coordinate, develop and promote handicraft exports, efforts have been on to boost handicraft exports. In fact, the EPCH adopted a comprehensive integrated strategy, which has over the years resulted in boosting exports of handicrafts from `387 crore in 1986-87 to `10533.96 crore in 2010-11. Not only has this strategy brought us foreign exchange but it has, in turn, increased employment opportunities for the economically and socially backward sections of the society. The country's handicraft exports have registered an average growth of 15 per cent per annum except in the last few years when the world faced an global economic slowdown. But then our product portfolio has widened: Handicrafts, which was originally confined to curios, gifts, antiques and similar other items are today a diversified range varying from utility items for daily household use to lifestyle products, etc. During the recession, the EPCH was pro-

The Indian product lines on display were textiles, garments, fashion accessories, costume jewellery and accessories, home textiles, embroidered textiles, antiques and curios, floor coverings, brocade items, marble products, incense, lamps and lighting accessories, stoles and scarves and lace products. May I take this opportunity to point out that the high export figure that we achieved in 2010 would not have been possible without the support of the Government. Even so, we have a long way to go. Our future strategy encompasses capacity development, design and product development, creation of infrastructural facilities and international marketing. Specific design and product development schemes will help create products that cater to international buyers.

he Indian Fashion Jewellery & Accessories sector is on a growth path and it is high time our creative manufacturers and artisans took a step to carve out a share from the $ 16.3-billion global market. Earlier editions of the mega B2B (business-to-business) Indian Fashion Jewellery & Accessories Show (IFJAS) have set the trend and we must endeavour to attract more buyers. As one of the leading jewelry industry trade events in India, IFJAS serves as a convenient platform for leading professionals from the sector to directly interact with each other and deliberate upon the latest news, views and prevailing trends around the world. With more than 300 exhibition stalls and a wide range of eminent jewelry brands that are launched during the show, IFJAS provides participants the scope to expand their business networks and get in touch with a large number of qualified and well-targeted buyers. India already exports fashion jewellery and accessories to the tune of `1737.49 crore, but still its share in the world market is very less and holding of IFJAS is part of Council's drive to promote and expand horizons of key verticals of the handicrafts sector, which has unbound potential to expand further. A global platform for the Fashion Jewellery & Accessories sector, IFJAS is a showcase for a wide range of materials, products and designs in five categories comprising fashion jewellery, semi - precious jewellery, fashion accessories, handbags and fancy and embroidered fashion shoes. magine an imitation stone elephant pendant with a Swarovski crystal as its eye, or a stoneencrusted butterfly brooch. That is the trend today: from the opulent but affordable jewellery that is written about so much in the romantic novels set amidst distant shores. While designers the world over are falling head over heels to replicate India and its mysteries in their creations, our very own master craftspersons are drawing inspiration from the imagery and culture of the land of their birth to create ethnic and contemporary motifs that add a perfect dose of glamour to any lady’s wardrobe. Welcome to the creativity of Indian craftspersons who can work magic with artificial and natural material. Our jewellery has been rooted in the Indian soil, not from today, but from ages that has lent itself to the creative hands of our craftspersons. Just as Indian traditions have evolved with time, so has Indian jewellery. Exemplary designs, precious stones and the adroit craftsmanship of Indian designers and artisans have given birth to a new line of Indian fashion jewellery which is elegant, captivating and defines attitude of individuals to

make a ravishing statement in the world of fashion jewellery. Jewellery-making is an art and each piece which is made is crafted out with well-balanced hands. Here’s the exquisite collection of our rich inheritance. KUNDANKARI Inspired by Mughal jewellery, Kundankari is done on gold and silver jewellery. The beauty of kundan work lies in the precise setting of stones into kundan and the overall look of the ornament. Gemstones are set within solid walls of gold. The jewellery features stones encrusted on one side and colourful and intricate meenakari on the reverse. This technique famous from Rajasthan is now being used to make some of the most in demand in the fashion jewellery industry. FILIGREE WORK Popularly known as ‘tarkashi’ - a style from the state of Odisha, Filigree work is done on silver. Twisting the delicate silver wire into delicate loops knitted in a zigzag pattern, lends this style of jewellery in an intricate lace like appearance. Inspired by the way it was done in Greece in

FOLK AND TRIBAL JEWELLERY Much assorted in India, folk and tribal jewellery delicately worked with wood, ivory, plastic, bones, beads and shells, is a visual delight. Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and the tribal zones in central, eastern and southern India are popular for ornaments in silver and a particular type of alloy called ‘Pewter’ that intimates silver. The craftsmen explore the use of all these to give crude and tribal yet fashionable look. BEADED & METAL JEWELLERY The enamel workers of Kangra, Chamba, Mandi, and Kullu are very famous for their exquisite chunky bead and metal jewellery. Elliptical anklets, solid iron-headed bangles, hair ornaments and necklaces known as chandanhaars (a bunch of long silver chain linked by engraved silver plagues) are some of the exquisite pieces that they usually make. TEMPLE JEWELLERY Temple jewellery of India is used to adorn the idols of Gods and

Goddesses and the designs have become a part of every woman’s jewellery collection. Traditionally, the jewellery consists of gold ornaments studded with red and green semiprecious stones. The designs in solid gold jewellery of Tamil Nadu and Kerala are made of paisley motifs. Other than traditional jewellery, our craftspersons and fashion jewellery and accessories designers are keeping in tune with contemporary trends. And this is where costume and fashion jewellery come in. Having options for accessories that go beyond the expensive and rare jewellery is incredibly appealing for most women and always has been. Dating back hundreds of years but having grown in popularity in the 20th century, costume jewellery and fashion jewellery have provided women the ability to look and feel glamorous. There are several similarities and differences between costume jewellery and fashion jewellery. Both styles of jewelry revolve around the same general concept which is to provide some kind of replication of higher-end jewellery. The metals and stones used are not precious but tend to be plated metals and glass or lower-cost semi-precious stones. Some typical components of the jewellery include rhinestones, rougher earth-

based stones such as turquoise and coloured or blown glass. In the last few decades, Swarovski crystal has become a staple in costume jewellery and fashion jewellery as it provide a definite middle ground between cheap-looking rhinestones and real jewels. Though more expensive, they still allow for a very reasonably priced piece. Costume jewellery was created to replace finer pieces of jewellery and that would otherwise be worn only several times and passed through generations as an heirloom. Costume jewellery allowed for everyday wear without fear of damage or loss. Women have enjoyed being able acquire a sizeable collection of jewellery and expand their personal style but adding to it with costume jewellery accessories. It also got its name due to its use in stage productions where the accessories needed to be seen by the audience and using real jewel was simply not feasible. Fashion jewellery only differs from costume jewellery in what it’s intended to be used for. If a more bold statement needs to be made or something is needed to dress up one outfit in particular, fashion jewellery would be required for in that it’s much less timeless than costume jewellery. The name fashion jewellery comes from the idea that it follows the latest trends and allows someone to keep current with what is fun and exciting without having to invest in something they may not wear after a year or two. This is not to say that costume jewellery and fashion jewellery can’t be used interchangeably. Regardless of what you call it, a great piece of imitation jewellery is going to add pizzazz to any outfit and make it a sure win. Fashion forecasts for the next year are full of 10 I APRIL 2012

solid colours among them shiny solid colors and metallics, animal prints and stripes, bohemian looks as well as over-sized and bulky fashion accessories. Today’s fashion dictates pendants that adorning and accentuate clothing. Some common styles include cartoon pictures while others show off boldly a single word like “Hope”. Cherries are a prominent feature in matched necklace-and-earring sets while shell pendants are much sought after. Playing along with the cherry theme are charm bracelets. Images like anchors, skull and crossbones are often seen on a pinup girl’s wrist. The idea is to grab a silver-link bracelet and start collecting a mélange of charms and funky dangles to build your own original, unique rockabilly-style bracelet. Along with the bracelets come the earrings in black, red and white. Or, if tastes run towards the sweet and demure, a girl might try a cherry cluster or a flower dangling from her lobes. The more adventurous might try a bangle bracelet that is a bracelet worn on the wrist and is generally spherical in shape. Bangle Bracelets became popular in the 1980s and are available in all shapes and sizes. The fashion icon who sports such bracelets stacked up her forearm is Madonna. These bangle bracelets are obtainable in countless designs and different styles. They could be of wood, stainless steel, sterling silver, white metal, plastic, lac, stone, beaded or glass. Perhaps, one of the latest trends that is catching on fast is hair accessories. Hair accessories can vary widely and can be made out of substances ranging from wood to crystals. There is a hair accessory for every occasion like a wedding or dinner parties.

stablished in 1985 by Sandeep and Rajan Malhotra, SVM has been successfully manufacturing an exquisite range of scarves, stoles, pareos, bandannas, hats, caps, bags, linen, wool, acrylic and woven cotton silk. A textile made from the fibres of the flax plant, linen is labor-intensive to manufacture, but when woven into garments, it is valued for its exceptional qualities in warm weather conditions. Silk is manufactured by several other insects, but normally only the silk of moth caterpillars has been used for textile making. On the other hand acrylic is a lightweight, soft, and warm synthetic fibre with a wool-like feel and it can be made to imitate other fibres, like cotton. Hand woven pashmina shawls and stoles are made with great skill and dedication. Rajan Malhotra says that basing his creations on quality jewellery, his company uses gemstones for hairclips. Additionally, we create lightweight, durable and unique pieces of wearable art In keeping with the turbulent world of designing (not to mention, the ever-changing and forever exciting landscape of fashion), SVM, with its strong work place ethics, is constantly evolving to meet international standards. nnovation and imagination is the key to fashion jewellery. Rakesh Daing of Elcorp Private Limited does not use precious metals such as gold or silver though brass and stainless steel is extensively utilized. The term fashion jewellery is a misnomer since the creations are everyday-use items. Therefore, the cost factor comes into play. Apart from using traditional beads, the company used new concepts: cloth beads and related accessories are put to good use. Elcorp has its own design team many of whom have done professional designing courses. In addition, it has a designer from Greece and that gives the design team an extremely competitive edge. The company's design concepts differ depending on the countries where its main markets are. For example, the preferences of Italians, Spanish and French are different though they are all Europeans. On the other hand, the Japanese prefer sleek designs. The concept of one design fitting all is not there in this industry. Similar differences are prevalent in the domestic market as well. Elcorp 's major market is Europe. Apart from that, Rakesh Daing sends designs to Japan and China while the USA accounts for just seven per cent of its exports.

here is no standard prescription for fashion jewellery and what is in fashion this year may not be so next year. Though K. G. Maheshwari keeps an eye on expected fashion trends, his manufacturing unit uses all kinds of material to craft jewellery using beads, bone, ceramic and glass but rarely use gold or silver except perhaps in strings specifically on demand. Says Maheshwari, “The fact is fashion jewellery uses material that is not high-priced but within the affordable range of buyers.” Krishna Beads Industries has its own design team but accepts suggestions from its buyers regarding materials and colours to be used. These buyers even forecast the next season's fashion trends. In addition, Maheshwari travels abroad frequently to get the feel of fashion jewellery trends and that helps a lot. Since most of the raw materials are available in the country, acquiring them at short notice does not cause hindrance or delay in the company's production schedules. The main market is mostly in USA, South Africa and Western Europe. Over the last few years, Maheshwari has expanded his portfolio to include scarves that have become fashion accessories.

The strength of a creative

instinct

“The creations of Kohli intercontinental depend on the imaginations of its team of in-house designers which creates fascinating jewellery.”

ohli Intercontinental came into existence in 1994 under the thoughtful guidance of H S Kohli. The company has established its existence in almost every nook and corner of the global market through its vast and creative product line such as necklaces, earrings, bangles and other fashion jewellery items. “The world is enamored with Indian handcrafted fashion jewellery that have become objects of possession for almost every lady who love to wear and show them off,” said Kohli. No wonder, there is an intense competition in this line of business from most of the Asian countries. However, Indian products are preferred for their handcrafted creative designs and blend of cultural heritage. The scope in this field is immense and the world market can be taken as the arena to face this bout. Kohli said, “The creations of a company totally depend on the imagination of its team of designers.” At Kohli Intercontinental, there is always emphasis on quality standards and creating eco-friendly products and with the help of EPCH, the company has been given a strong platform for a connection with buyers.

jewellery ashion is a state of the mind. So, what is fashion to someone may not mean much to another. There is no set prescription to a fashion and since there are so many variables, fashion become that much more interesting and challenging to create as well. It is all about creativity but one has to understand the subtle variations in different parts of the world. For example, the colur and size of the beads that South America & Middle East costumers like is entirely different from those preferred by Spanish or Portuguese. There is intense competition from other Asian countries in this field who offer cheaper alternatives. As regards handcrafted items are concerned, India still remains supreme and Indian jewellery is handcrafted. And for this, there is no alternative yet. Ravi Khanna mentions this because NCCR Exports export handcrafted jewellery and accessories and there is competition in this segment. On the other hand, competition brings out the company's best

In addition, it has added a range of products to its portfolio. Jewellery, be it fashion or costume or ethnic, is part of this growth. Said N SKohli: “We pioneered the use of horn and bone to create jewellery. Even today, only a few can make out the difference. As an extension of this activity, we allot this work to tribal villagers in faraway places. I am proud to mention that we adopt tribal art form in fashion and costume jewellery designs.”As for designs, while there is an in-house design team, Kohli also takes suggestions from his buyers who keep watch on the market trends. These designs are tweaked to be in tune with the latest in the world. The company has a strong supplier base. Each region has its strength in a particular facet in jewellery manufacturing and as Kohli said, “We provide the necessary raw material. Our quality personnel keep a watch at each stage of production. These are finally assembled in our warehouse, checked, packed and bar-coded before despatch.” Kohli Overseas buyers are in Europe and the USA.

In the business since 1974, Rahul Agarwal specialises in scarves and shawls. Unique in their designs and quality of material used, Laaj's products have wowed the fashion-conscious in USA and western Europe. What sets Agarwal's scarves and shawls are the designs and colours. The in-house design team keeps track of the latest trends in western fashion and creates unique pieces. Perhaps, what is most interesting is the fact that the designs are a fusion of the traditional Indian motifs and contemporary concepts. Often, Laaj is advised by the overseas buyers to create products in a certain colour and that is done readily. Most of the western buyers prefer pastel shades and lighter colours. The company has been planning to add stoles to the list of its products shortly.

ee Gee Creations has been specialising in designer fashion jewellery from 1993. The products crafted from the best quality materials bring India's traditional craftsmanship to the fore. Each piece is so lovingly created that Dee Gee Creations has earned clients in Spain, Portugal, USA, Japan, France, Italy, Australia and South Africa. The designs are basically created in-house by the design team that keeps a close watch on the fashion trends in the west. However, often clients suggest designs, styles and colours for incorporation in Dee Gee's portfolio. As Deepak Gupta puts it, “The inspiration from our clients helps us build a portfolio that boasts of creations that are at once unique and popular.” Even so, many of the designs have to be tweaked to keep in tune with special demands that vary from country to country. While some may ask for lighter colours, others ask for more traditional designs and yet others demand changes according to the seasons. The company has an impressive portfolio and though there are often demands from customers around the world to introduce new products, Deepak Gupta would like to concentrate on what he has. eople are really lucky who get a chance in their life to settle themselves in a career of their own choice and I consider myself to be one of those lucky people. Like everyone else, I also had dreams in my eyes when I started this venture in 2004,” says Abhishek Arun Jain of Abhishek Creative Impex. He added, “The job of a creator is most gratifying and you feel ecstatic when your buyers or the ultimate user of your products expresses such views.” The major strength of an artisan's creativity is reflected in his art of blending modern designs with ethnic traditions and at Abhishek Creative Impex this is the thumb rule that is inculcated in the in-house team of designing professionals. Jain specified, “We have a huge variety of products and designs and this is a result of technological advancement, research and development.” The variation in the choice of buyers from one market to another is sometimes quite steep. Therefore, designs have to be quite innovative and should be created by considering the expectations and choice of buyers from a particular market. “

Shawls in varied styles and

colours

“Indian Impex's shawls and scarves have created a place for themselves in the world of fashion and their quality and colours make them stand out.”

lassy and distinctive shawls and scarves are the forte of Indian Impex Agencies. Over the nearly 38 years of its existence, Indian Impex has built a wide portfolio of varied styles and materials. That provides ample opportunity to buyers from the west to pick and choose what they want. While most of the designs are created by the in-house design team, Indian Impex also heeds to the suggestions from its buyers. Most of the time, the overseas buyers desire colours that are lighter in shades than the ones used in India. Their USP lies in bringing together unmatched richness and artistic excellence, combined with creative usages of local embellishments and contemporary designs. Indian Impex's shawls and scarves are all about innovative designs and creativity that stands apart from others. The company has skilled artisans to handcraft the intricate designs. With buyers in America and Western Europe, Indian Impex is known for maintaining its schedules and its packaging and that is appreciated. The company is environmentally-conscious and recycles its waste. Indian Impex's shawls and scarves have created a place for themselves in the world of fashion and their quality and colours make them stand out.
