R

egular physical activity helps keep your heart, lungs, and muscles in shape and can stave off the effects of aging. In much the same way, exercising your brain can help keep your mind sharp and your memory intact. Here are four ways to activate your brain from Harvard Medical School.

4 Ways To Stay

• Walk instead of driving when possible. • Set aside time each day for exercise.

Mentally Sharp Keep busy and engaged

The MacArthur Foundation Study on Successful Aging, a long-term study of aging in America, found that education level was the strongest predictor of mental capacity as people aged. The more education, the more likely an individual was to maintain his or her memory and thinking skills. Intellectual enrichment and learning stimulate the brain to make more connections. The more connections, the more resilient the brain. That’s how a habit of learning and engaging in mentally challenging activities—like learning a new language or craft—can help keep the brain in shape, especially later in life.

Finally, exercise has been linked to increased production of neurotrophins, substances that nourish brain cells and help protect them against damage from stroke and other injuries. Here are some ways to build physical activity into your daily routine:

Meaningful, socially engaging activities may prove especially helpful. In a study conducted with the Baltimore Experience Corps, volunteers were assigned to either a waitlist (control group) or a group that helped elementary school children during class and library time. Early results suggested that participants who remained engaged in the program for many months improved their executive function and memory.

Exercise

beyond. Although the precise “dose” of exercise isn’t known, research suggests that the exercise should be moderate to vigorous and regular. Examples of moderate exercise include brisk walking, stationary bicycling, water aerobics and competitive table tennis. Vigorous activities include jogging, high impact aerobic dancing, square dancing and tennis.

Physical fitness and mental fitness go together. People who exercise regularly tend to stay mentally sharp into their 70s, 80s, and

= Make new friends

Establishing and maintaining close ties with others is another way to maintain mental skills and memory. Social interaction and mentally engaging activities often go hand in hand (think volunteering or tutoring schoolkids). Social relationships can also provide support during stressful times, reducing the damaging effects that stress can have on the brain. Lifestyles After 50 • September 2014 • page 6

• For extra motivation, ask your spouse or a friend to join you.

• Use the stairs instead of the elevator. • Plant a garden and tend it. • Take an exercise class or join a health club.

• Swim regularly if you have access to a pool or beach.

• Learn a sport that requires modest physical exertion, such as tennis.

Go Mediterranean

Exercise helps memory in several ways. It reduces the risk of developing several potentially memory-robbing conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke. Exercise is good for the lungs, and people who have good lung function send more oxygen to their brains. There is some evidence that exercise helps build new connec connections between brain cells and improves communication between them.

Mediterranean-type diets highlight whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats from fish, nuts, and healthy oils. This eating style helps promote heart health and may also lessen the risk of memory and thinking problems later in life. In a study that followed more than 2,000 people over four years, those who most closely followed a Mediterranean-type diet had a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. A later study suggested that following a Mediterranean-type diet could slow the conversion of mild cognitive impairment into full-blown dementia. Eating several servings of fruits and vegetables can also protect memory. Foods from plants are chock full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients that may protect against age-related deterioration throughout the body. From Harvard Medical School.

MindSpa Stimulates Brains to New Horizons BY TOM CHANG

D

arla Thixtun has a lot to be grateful for after being treated at MindSpa after suffering two car accidents. “I had post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic fatigue, sleep disorder and sensory disorder,” Thixtun said. “I stuttered and had a memory dysfunction.” Thixtun recalled times when she was driving home but couldn’t remember how to get there. “I lived in the same house for 18 years,” Thixtun said. “Can you imagine knowing that you’re going home but not remembering how to get there? It was very hard and I’m a perfectionist.” Thixtun said her IQ dropped below a ninth grade level. She was referred to MindSpa by a patient. After eight sessions, people started to notice a difference in her. “My voice sounded better and I looked different,” she said. “I found

out that my chronic fatigue was due to my brain not perceiving my sleep.” Thixtun said she was treated with neurofeedback and Nexalin, a therapy that generates electric waves to stimulate areas of the brain. “(Before MindSpa) Nobody knew what was wrong with me,” she said. “I couldn’t function. This was my last resort and it worked.” Thixtun now works as MindSpa’s office manager. Rozelle started MindSpa in Sarasota ten years ago as an extension of his private practice in neurofeedback. “I’ve been doing neurofeedback for 24 years,” Rozelle said. “What makes MindSpa special is the combination of the clinical and subclinical things to help people maintain their mental sharpness and mental balance. We do a lot of the easy biofeedback work like brain mapping.”

MindSpa offers a variety of services like cognitive brain training, computer-based training, color therapy, sensory deprivation floatation tank, infrared sauna and color dome. “I can best describe (the treatment) as it’s the more integrative side of functional medicine,” Rozelle said. “We’re not the traditional homeopathic approach. Usually people come here as an alternative to traditional

medicine. Our therapies are designed to tap into the body’s natural ability to heal itself.” MindSpa’s clientele include patients of all ages from the elderly, children with attention deficit disorder and most recently, retired NFL players. “We’re currently in clinical trials with some retired NFL players who have suffered from the affects of redundant brain trauma anywhere from their 40s to their 60s,” Rozelle said. “They develop some real impairments, both cognitive and emotional. The neurofeedback we provide could really help them, and perhaps save their lives, because many have reached the point where they’ve committed suicide. So that’s something I’m excited about, because we’re showing there is something we can do and it’s not confined to football players, but most of the general population that has had some mild brain trauma.” For more information, go to www. mind-spas.com or call 941-954-9959.

Practice Mindfulness for Joy, Confidence BY JOAN FRANCES MORAN

H

ave you ever wondered what it is like to be invisible? Maybe you’ve even felt invisible yourself from time to time. I had an experience about a decade ago when my best friend and I were at the makeup counter in a department store and no one would wait on us. “It’s our age,” she said to me with disdain. “Our age?” I asked. “We’re not even 60 yet.” “You’re clueless,” she replied. “We’re not getting waited on because they can’t see us. We’re getting older.” “That’s ridiculous. We look hot and hip and we’re just trying to buy some age-defying makeup.” I laughed. “It’s not about age. They need our business.” “Yes, it is. They can’t see us,” she said firmly. What my friend didn’t realize was that being seen has nothing to do with aging. Being seen is an attitude of confidence and style. Being seen is about understanding that women are more beautiful and certainly more interesting as they get older. Most of my friends are young— really young—and they actually find me interesting. At 70, you’ve got some pearls of wisdom gleaned from experience because you’ve lived so long.

Furthermore, you can let go of the past, get rid of emotional baggage, be present, look forward with excitement and forgive anybody who ever said an unkind word to you because it’s in the past. Aging is like being in recovery, but a lot more fun.

being you. Your conscious awareness sets you on the journey of gratitude every day for those you love and cherish and for your amazing talents and skills. A practice of mindfulness is at the center of your aging journey. Mindfulness resonates a state of peace, increases personal awareness, fosters great health and inspires growth and transformation.

“Being seen has nothing to do with aging. Being seen is an attitude of confidence and style.”

“... Have you ever wondered what it is like to be invisible? ”

Retirement Living Life gets better as you age because you are more mindful about your place in the universe. You have a greater ability to recognize amazing possibilities and imagine untold opportunities. Simple things take on new importance: You can say “NO” without guilt; you can say “YES” with more joy; you can find humor in almost anything because you finally understand irony.

According to the UCLA Mindful Awareness Center, mindful awareness can be defined as paying attention to present moment experiences with openness, curiosity, and a willingness to be with what is. It is an antidote to the stresses of modern times and invites us to stop, breathe, observe and connect with one’s inner experience. There are many ways to bring mindfulness into one’s life, such as meditation, yoga, art, or time in nature. Mindfulness can be trained systematically, and can be implemented in daily life, by people of any age, profession or background.

Lifestyles After 50 • September 2014 • page 10

In the last ten years, significant research has shown mindfulness to lower blood pressure and boost the immune system; increase attention and focus, aid those suffering from ADHD; help with difficult mental states such as anxiety and depression, foster well-being and lessen emotional reactivity; and thicken the brain in areas in charge of decision making, emotional flexibility, and empathy (marc.ucla.edu). Mindfulness reminds you that the gifts of acceptance and surrender are never far from your consciousness. It is a relief to know that you no longer have to “prove” you are worthy of

Back to the makeup counter or other store where you may feel ignored. The salesperson is not waiting on you because she is busy at the cash register helping another customer. You are not invisible. Being invisible because of age is a myth perpetuated by those of us that feel badly about aging. We need to empower ourselves and be more mindful. Because those that spread negativity to others or sit in a state of mindlessness in front of the television are throwing themselves a pity party. That’s not a party you need to attend. Mindfulness is what is hip and cool. Joan Moran is an author, keynote speaker, corporate wellness expert and an authority on remaining vibrant and active in later life. Hey, Don’t Call Me That! BY ELLE LAYNE

enior or boomer? “Active adult,” “55-plus” or “older American?” “Nursing home” or “retirement community?” These words have power as well as positive and negative connotations. They affect the way society treats us and the way we see ourselves. But what do we want to be called? A recent article from Newswire referenced a survey conducted by SeniorMarketing.com, which gauged the responses of 1,114 people to the language used when describing individuals 50 and older. Most respondents (71%) were comfortable with the term “Baby Boomer,” but opinions were evenly split over the term “senior,” with only 49% approving, the article stated.

According to Kevin Williams, president of SeniorMarketing. com, words that were once acceptable a generation ago have now become taboo. “Nursing home” got the worst response from his survey participants. “Perhaps most surprisingly, 44.2% agreed that the terms ‘senior living’ and ‘retirement community’ are outdated,” he said. Furthermore, when addressing ageism, or discrimination based upon age, the survey found that half of respondents said they had been victims of ageist stereotypes, while 72% said that they knew someone who had. Boomer Jeanne Adams wrote about an ageist encounter with an 18-yearold waitress who called her “honey.” “Suddenly and without warning, all of the authority, respect, admiration, and accomplishments you have so painstakingly accumulated over the years, are reduced to nothing but trivial pursuits,” Adams wrote.

officially marginalized to someone who is seen as simply old...and will begin to disappear from the sight and thoughts of others.” So what do we call ourselves? So far the solutions are as varied as the individuals they represent; we all think of ourselves in different ways. The consensus is that those reaching out to the over-55 crowd would do well to put themselves in our shoes—to address us with the respect and validation they would like to be given when they reach our age. We’re human beings who have achieved greatness in our lifetimes, and the language used to refer to us should not be used to categorize us, patronize us or control our interests or our lifestyle. Golden ager? The sun is hardly setting. We’re expected to live longer, healthier, more active lives than the generation before us, and the language should reflect that. Better yet, why label us at all?

“All those academic degrees, professional titles, etc., have been relegated to insignificance in the eyes of society. You have now been

Vietnam 1968 – 1969: From Innocence to Trauma BY JANICE DOYLE

J

ack Estes remembers the moment he became emotionally “flat.” He and a buddy he calls PJ in his autobiographical novel “A Field of Innocence” had crawled through a rice paddy in Vietnam to rescue some trapped Marines. They found the squad’s corpsman wounded, applied some battle dressings and began dragging him toward a line of trees. A sudden spurt of enemy gunfire hit PJ three times. Estes took off one boot and used his sock to wrap PJ’s arm. “I felt I could only save one person, and I chose PJ and headed for the tree line. I laid him down. I was shaking. I grabbed my rifle and started screaming and firing until I ran out of ammunition. I picked up another gun and started again.” A medivac truck came and loaded PJ. Estes climbed in the back too. The driver asked him what he was doing. “I told them I couldn’t stay because I didn’t have but one boot and my rifle had been shot up. The gunny sergeant handed me a rifle and the driver took off his boot, handed it to me and told me to get out.” From then on, Estes says, “I saw but didn’t feel anything and that’s how I felt for the rest of my tour. I’d see someone get shot, either an enemy or someone in my unit, and feel nothing. That was the turning point.” Back home, he did things that were very dangerous and was hyper-alert, watching everything. He got in fights. He went to college and began writing and reading about the war. Today, Estes’s condition is called PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress

Disorder)—when a human experiences something above and beyond the human experiences of life. At Southern Illinois University he began writing and reading about the war. The anti-war movement was in full swing. He says, “I wrote in ways to punish people. At that time I wanted people to fear me. Many decades later I changed that to wanting people to respect me.” Decades later, Estes says he has gone through “hundreds of hours of therapy and been on medication. Those things plus my wife’s love turned me around. The trauma I felt turned to a disorder that interrupts life in negative ways. I turned things into a positive reminder of the war’s effects.” He wants all veterans suffering with war’s traumas to know there is help. With his wife Colleen, he created the Fallen Warriors Foundation to honor the sacrifices of American soldiers and help heal the pain of war. They delivered hundreds of thousands of dollars of goods to the poorest villages in Vietnam. Estes led disabled veterans back to the place of their biggest trauma for their healing. He has also taken medical teams to remote villages and primitive hospitals to give care. More recently he and Colleen have begun holding meditative retreats for help with healing. They produced a film titled “Wounded Spirits, Healing from Trauma: The Vietnam Veterans.” His book “A Field of Innocence” is a realistic and chilling story which details the sounds, the sights, the smells and the fear that accompanied the very young Estes and others on the battlefields of Vietnam. This fall his second book “A Soldier’s Son” will be released.

hat was her name again? Forgetting things from one second to the next—for example, walking into a room and forgetting why you went there, or occasionally misplacing personal items, like a wallet or car keys—are minor memory slips that are usually considered signs of benign age-related forgetfulness, and are not cause for worry, according to Harvard Medical School. Potential signs of cognitive decline involve situations like getting lost in familiar surroundings, having difficulty remembering important details of recent events or difficulty following the plot of a television program or book because of memory problems. If you notice that your memory changes that are worse than those of people your same age, or that it begins to interfere with daily life, it may be worth a visit to your doctor for a baseline assessment.

In the meantime, for those everyday normal senior moments, here are a few tricks that will aid your recall ability:

Easy Memory Helpers • Keep your keys, phone, and eyeglasses in the same place every day. • Pay closer attention when you need to remember details. • Do one thing at a time; multitasking increases forgetfulness. • Repeat names of new acquaintances, silently or aloud. • Link a person’s name to a rhyme or vivid mental image. • Repeat important facts back to people as you talk to them. • Eliminate distractions when you’re trying to learn something. • Read instructions more than once on different occasions.

Men Get Hot Flashes, Too S

eptember is national menopause awareness month. But the male equivalent—andropause—deserves attention as well. Andropause is a gradual decrease in testosterone levels that affects men in their forties and beyond. It can lead, in some cases, to erectile dysfunction, diabetes, loss of energy and concentration, depression and mood swings. Hot flashes are a rarer occurance in men, but they do happen. It occurs most often in men with a history of prostate cancer, or in the case of a testosterone deficiency, according to author Gary Elkins, Ph.D., director of Baylor’s Mind-Body Medicine Research Laboratory and a professor of psychology and neuroscience in Baylor’s College of Arts & Sciences. “Men are more reluctant to report hot flashes, and it’s not as prevalent. There are fewer ways to deal with it. If a guy has hot flashes, you can’t say, ‘Well, why don’t we put you on estrogen?’ But it’s a pressing problem.”

Current treatments for men are varied, ranging from testosterone supplement therapy to acupuncture. Outcomes have been mixed—and safety of some treatments remains in question, Elkins said. In a study by Baylor University, one drug-free treatment that has proved effective is hypnotic relaxation therapy. One of the subjects, “Mr. W.” visualized fishing at his favorite Texas lake whenever a flash would hit. He donned imaginary rubber boots, waded into the water and enjoyed a cool breeze as he cast a line and fish began to nibble. The therapy “eliminated the flashes, calmed me down, cooled my body off,” he said. “During one session, I needed a blanket...The self-hypnosis was empowering.” He went from 160 hot flashes a week to 15, and the technique proved beneficial for women as well. There may be hope for hot flash sufferers, as long as you are willing to try an unconventional treatment. (Info from Newswise and Baylor University)

Interactive Tool Takes Mystery Out of Menopause

W

omen can turn to an expanded online resource to explore the stages of menopause and learn about symptoms they may experience. The Endocrine Society and its public education arm, the Hormone Health Network, recently launched the “Menopause Map™,” an interactive tool to help women learn about menopause and start important conversations with their health care providers and peers. The Map allows women to enter info about their age, reproductive health and symptoms to determine where they are in the menopausal transition, as well as perimenopause and postmenopause.

The Menopause Map™ offers free, reliable information and accessible resources to help women gain peace of mind and control of their health at menopause.

Health What is Menopause? When a woman enters menopause, she stops menstruating and her body produces less of the sex hormones estrogen and progesterone. During that time, a woman may experience moderate to severe symptoms, including hot flashes, interrupted sleep, vaginal dryness and other symptoms that affect her quality of life. This change can take place gradually over the course of several years.

“Menopause is a natural part of a woman’s life, but many women are hesitant to reach out to physicians or other women to learn more about the changes and symptoms they may experience,” said Susan Kirk, MD, an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia and a member of the Hormone Health Network’s advisory committee. “The Menopause Map™ offers information women need to

fully understand the transition and feel comfortable so they can reach out for any support they may need.” About the Map The Menopause Map™ features interactive questionnaires to help women gauge what stage of menopause they are experiencing. Based on an individual woman’s responses, the Menopause Map provides a printable resource she can take to a doctor’s appointment as well as links to other information.

In addition to menopause, the map covers the risks and symptoms of other medical issues associated with the biological changes that come with menopause— including thyroid issues, heart disease, bone loss and diabetes—as well as tips and treatments for managing and preventing these illnesses through adopting a healthier diet infor and lifestyle. Helpful information can also be found on treating the symptoms of menopause through hormone therapy, medications and non-pharmaceutical means. Some tips are included below. The Map was developed by Endocrine Society physician experts and members of the Red Hot Mamas®, the nation’s largest menopause management education and peer support program. It includes links to the Red Hot Mamas’ Menopause Support Group, where visitors can connect with other women who are going through the change. Share your story along the menopause journey and be empowered, encouraged, and informed! The Menopause Map™ can be found at menopausemap.org. (Newswise)

Ragweed: Most prevalent in the Eastern and Midwest states, ragweed results in symptoms that include itchy eyes, nose and throat, sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, tearing or dark circles under the eyes. An allergy symptom is the result of the immune system overreacting. It mistakes the pollen or other allergy trigger as a foreign invader and attacks it, which leads to the release of chemicals called histamines into the blood. The histamine travels through the blood and latches onto histamine receptors on other cells, causing them to swell. This inflammation causes many familiar allergy symptoms.

• Maintain an allergen free environment at home • Focus on your bedroom: keep your pets out, eliminate dust-magnet rugs and avoid feather pillows. • Make sure the fireplace is wellventilated and be careful of any leakage. • Keep damp places like basements and bathrooms dry to deter mold. • Have your heating system cleaned to avoid dust mites when you first turn on the heat Infections: The third trigger is infections and the flu, which affect the body’s immune system and cause it to release antibodies and histamines to fight them off. The flu vaccine is recommended to help reduce the risk of getting sick, but it’s even more important for the elderly or those who suffer from asthma or other lung conditions. “There’s no reason for people with allergies to suffer,” Dr. Rosenstreich said. “As long as you take the proper precautions, you should be able to enjoy the beautiful fall weather and make the most of family time in your home.” David L. Rather than providing the standard B&B-style homestays, FEXEXA offers participants the opportunity to be the only guests in the host’s home. Participants will be matched with a local host based on personal interests. The program allows travelers to experience a country up close, to have homecooked meals instead of restaurant meals, to become involved with the people and immersed in the culture of each country, to celebrate holidays together, and to shop where their hosts shop. FEXEXA offers a gentler way of being a tourist, a more engaging way to travel.

Examples of FEXEXA’s diverse program possibilities include: • Istanbul: A mosaic of four different cultures.

• France: Explore lesser-known regions. • Galway: Get to know the most Gaelic county in Ireland.

• China: Discover the smaller cities.

• Argentina: Experience “Vendimia” (grape harvest) in Mendoza.

• Paraguay: Visit the Jesuit missions. There are 40 countries to choose from, and English speaking hosts are available in all countries. Participants can choose stays as short as one week or much, much longer. There are three different categories: Standard, Superior and Luxury. Where’d Da Go? Slot Machines Then and Now

ear Mark: With apologies to General Douglas MacArthur, the question still remains: what happens to old slot machines that have outlived their usefulness? I have noticed that some of my favorite machines mysteriously disappear, one casino at a time, until they are just a fleeting memory of spinning reels and flashing lights. Gone, but not forgotten. Then there are retail establishments specific to the selling of older slot machines in gambling towns like Reno and Las Vegas, where selling gambling equipment is legal. Some of these stores have a decent sized collection on site. If you are a want-to-be buyer of a “dearly departed friend,” it is important to check state and local laws before you pull the trigger (handle), although, generally speaking, antique slot machines are legal in most states if they are over 25 years old. You can also do a Google search on “old slot machines for sale,” or, go to eBay, where a plethora of slots are always for sale. Even though Nevada may be the gambling capital of the United States, the slot machine was actually born elsewhere, in San Francisco.

Atlantic City:

‘Show Us Your Shoes’ on the Jersey Shore

BY FRED WRIGHT

M

any people think of Atlantic City as an expanse of Atlantic Ocean beaches and high-rise casinos with their green felt gaming tables and hundreds of slot machines. That’s too limiting. People need to think of Atlantic City in terms of feet. Atlantic City is a place to walk—up and down the beaches, along the four miles of famous Boardwalk, the length of the Steel Pier down to where the helicopter offers 10-minute rides.

Travel And it’s the place, every September, to see 53 beauty contestants parade up and down the city as the Miss America Pageant celebrates decades-old traditions of poise, articulation, talent and shoes. Yes, shoes. While millions are expected to watch the televised finals on Sunday, Sept. 14, it is the parade the day before, Sept. 13—the “Show Me Your Shoes Parade”—that seems to provide the most conversation. The parade provides the contestants a chance to be creative in a different arena. They can create elaborate costumes for the parade and especially their anything-goes shoes. Then, as the floats and convertibles inch along, the contestants prop their feet up for all to view as thousands line the route. Dating back to the 1970s, local lore says that fans in bleachers along the Boardwalk wanted to see the fashionable shoes the contestants were wearing as their convertibles rolled by. So they began to shout, ”Show us your shoes!” Since then, the parade has grown. Last year’s parade of floats, cars, bands, dignitaries, celebrities, military heroes, youth groups and more had more than 4,000 participants.

Of course, getting the Miss America Pageant back to Atlantic City last year, after a 7-year absence, was a major feat as well. Nina Davulluri was the first Miss America to be crowned in Atlantic City since 2005. The pageant actually extends over four days—three days of preliminary competition and then the televised final selection at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall. The tradition of Americans watching around their TV sets in September dates back to the first telecast in 1954. That broadcast broke all viewer records to date, with an estimated 27 million viewers.

Grilled Salmon with Mustard & Herbs

Ingredients: 2 lemons, thinly sliced 20 – 30 sprigs mixed fresh herbs, plus 2 T chopped, divided thyme, tarragon, oregano 1 clove garlic 1/4 tsp salt 1 T Dijon mustard 1 lb. center-cut salmon, skinned

Directions Preheat grill to medium-high. Lay two 9-inch pieces of heavy-duty foil on top of each other and place on a rimless baking sheet. Arrange lemon slices in two layers in the center of the foil. Spread herb sprigs over the lemons. With the side of a chef’s knife, mash garlic with salt to form a paste. Transfer to a small dish and stir in mustard and the remaining 2 tablespoons chopped herbs. Spread the mixture over both sides of the salmon. Place the salmon on the herb sprigs. Slide the foil and salmon off the baking sheet onto the grill without disturbing the salmon-lemon stack. Cover the grill; cook until the salmon is opaque in the center, 18 to 24 minutes. Wearing oven mitts, carefully transfer foil and salmon back onto the baking sheet. Cut the salmon into 4 portions. (discard herb sprigs and lemon slices). (From EatingWell).

Blueberry, Walnut & Flaxseed Oatmeal Ingredients 2 c water Dash salt 1 c regular rolled oats 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/4 c blueberries 1/4 c walnuts, chopped 1 T flaxseeds Directions Combine the water and salt in a small saucepan and turn the heat to high. When the water boils, turn the heat to low, add oatmeal and cook, stirring, until the water is just absorbed, about 5 minutes. Add cinnamon, walnuts and flaxseeds. Stir, cover the pan, and turn off heat. Let sit for 5 minutes. Serve with blueberries. (From Sparkpeople.com).

ant to keep your brain in prime condition? It may be as simple as adding more healthy fats to your diet. According to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research, people with high blood levels of the “good” fats found in fish had more robust brains than those with low levels of those fats, a new study reports. For the study, researchers looked at blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids, the “good” fats found in fish. Oily fish like salmon, sardines, tuna and mackerel are particularly rich in omega-3s, as are some leafy greens and flaxseed oil. While brains normally shrink as we grow older, having high omega-3 levels seems to slow this process. People with the highest levels of omega-3s had brain volumes that were the equivalent of preserving one to two years of brain health, the researchers found. Brain volume was particularly well preserved in the hippocampus, a part of the brain critical for memory. Try these brain-boosting recipes:

Moodiness is often dependent on circumstances. It is normal to feel down when negative things happen to you. Depression may strike for no reason or may occur after a major life trauma. While moodiness comes and goes, depression lasts at least two weeks.

Simple Tips to Enhance Your Home’s

1.

Personality 2.

off with a simple tap. Like any good accessory, choose a finish that complements your personality and room, from the warm and inviting tones of Champagne Bronze to always in-style chrome.

3. Install new hardware.

Y

our home can say a lot about you. A state-of-the-art kitchen outfitted with a double oven likely means you enjoy cooking and entertaining friends and family. Likewise, a backyard complete with play sets, a treehouse or a basketball hoop is a sure sign that your house is also a hangout for the neighborhood kids.

Housing “My house is more than just a haven for my family. It’s a real life scrapbook, art gallery and personal sanctuary,” said Michelle Hinkley, mom to three young boys and the lady behind the home and lifestyles blog www.4men1lady.com. “As much as I want it to be functional, I enjoy spending a little extra time finding ways to keep our home uniquely us.” If you’re thinking about ways to add some personality, consider these five simple (wallet-friendly!) improvements:

1. Paint your front door. First impressions start at the front door. Consider your home’s exterior and

outdoor surroundings as you’re selecting a new hue, but when narrowing down your paint palette, also focus on the tints that best reflect your family’s vibe. A bright green door is both welcoming and fun, while a shiny black finish adds glamour. Even a crisp, white hue can be anything but boring, offering a clean backdrop for potted plants and accessories that change with each season.

2. Replace a fixture. If cooking is integral to your personality, consider updating one of your kitchen’s most frequently used appliances: the faucet. Today’s kitchen faucets come equipped with a variety of features and make for a relatively simple DIY project. The Delta Trinsic kitchen faucet, for example, features a magnetic pull-down wand that locks the spray head in place when it’s not in use and optional Touch2O Technology, which allows users to turn water on or

Small details can make a big impact. Customize furniture, closets or built-ins with stylish drawer pulls. Styles range from the whimsical, hand-painted options available at craft fairs to more substantive handles and pulls available at your

local hardware store. Take your time selecting pieces you love for a look that’s both unique and functional.

4. Start a collection. Showcase your

personality by decorating your space with small items or collectables. A collection of sea glass bottles or vases, for instance, could pay tribute to a favorite vacation spot, while ceramic animals in bright colors show off your quirky and creative side. To create a cohesive focal point, focus on collecting items similar in colors, materials or textures.

5. Build or craft something. If

you’re really daring, try creating some inexpensive home decor for your space. Sites like Pinterest.com are great resources for compiling inspiration; many blogs also offer step-bystep guides for a variety of projects for the home. Whether you’re creating a one-of-a-kind piece of art or building a coffee table from scratch your next project could be a fun opportunity to help truly customize your home. Sunburst Wreath

Mimic a blazing sunburst with this fall wreath. Fold out the husks on ears of Indian corn so they point straight out from the tops. Hot-glue the ears to a straw wreath, and “fluff ” the husks to complete the look. (from Pinterest and Midwest Living)
