story and photos by

Meredith J. Cooper meredithc@newsreview.com

T

here is no shortage of excellent restaurants in Chico, especially when it comes to traditional breakfast, lunch and dinner fare. Brunch is also a standard in this town, and pretty much every place that sells food before noon offers a few perks (i.e., champagne!) on weekends. But what about happy hour, that joyous, all-tooshort period between work and home? Generally speaking, happy hour is from 5-6 p.m. and is highlighted by discounted drinks and appetizers, just enough to celebrate the end of the work day without spoiling dinner. In Chico, many establishments extend those hours and start at 4, or 3, or even 2:20 p.m. (read on for an explainer on that one). In honor of this beloved post-work tradition, I set out to explore a few of Chico’s many happy hour destinations (I couldn’t possibly try them all). My goal was to locate a good mix of drink and food options, and I certainly found what I was looking for. 8 SAVOR

Two Twenty Restaurant 220 W. Fourth St., 895-1515 Two Twenty, the restaurant inside the swanky Hotel Diamond downtown, is a nice retreat, especially if you’re inclined toward upscale wines and specialty cocktails. The food, too, is a mix of comfort and creativity not easily matched by other establishments. My boyfriend, Chuck, and I headed over to Two Twenty on an early Saturday afternoon (happy hour there starts at, you guessed it, 2:20 p.m.). The game was on the television behind the bar, so we found seats and

perused the menu. Happy hour at Two Twenty is quite the opposite of happy hour at Christian Michaels, as it’s the food that’s on special rather than the drinks, which we ordered anyway. I stuck with the house Cab and Chuck ordered a Chico Origin, which is Chico Chai-infused Bulleit bourbon. Off the happy hour menu, which doesn’t surpass $6, we chose the Eggs Deville ($4) and zucchini fritters ($5). Other options included Hexeginia beer cheese with a fried pickle, and “compressed watermelon.” The Chico Origin ended up being the priciest thing on our bill

at $7, but boy, was it tasty. The zucchini fritters came in second on the flavor scale, especially when paired with a squeeze of lime juice and a swipe through the dipping sauces. The Eggs Deville turned out to be a fancy name for deviled eggs. Delicious, but nothing special.

Christian Michaels Ristorante

Christian Michaels Ristorante 192 E. Third St., 894-4005 Of the five spots on my pub crawl map, Christian Michaels was definitely in the top two. First, the drink specials are very reasonable: $3.50 for your choice of house wine, well liquor, lemon drop martini or cosmo (beers run $3-$3.50). I’m a wine drinker, so a glass of the house Cabernet sounded just fine. It was good, too. (As a rule, you can’t go wrong with a nice restaurant’s house wines.) Now, there aren’t actually specials on food during happy hour at Christian Michaels, but the small plate menu is available only in the bar/lounge area, so it’s a darn good reason to pop in. Items range from appetizers (seared

ahi, calamari, garlic parmesan fries) to small entrees (barolo braised pork shank, baconwrapped meatloaf medallion) to salads and personal pizzas. Nothing costs more than $8. The crab cake with lemon aioli and crab salsa sounded delicious, so I ordered that to accompany my wine. I was flying solo on this venture, and I was lucky to have found an empty seat at the bar, as the entire room was full of chatty, happy people; an older, sophisticated crowd. The crab cake came and was quickly consumed as it was, indeed, as good as it looked.

Unwined at 980 980 Mangrove Ave., 809-2634 One of Chico’s newer restaurants, Unwined at 980, is a hip spot located just a stone’s throw from downtown. It used to be a Blockbuster Video, but feels like nothing of the sort thanks to a thoroughly modern retrofit. Its happy hour consisted of a small selection of discounted drinks and a few specialty appetizers.

Rawbar

10 SAVOR

I met my friend Wendy at Unwined after work one afternoon and the atmosphere was perfectly pleasant for small groups who want to have intimate conversations, as the tables are spaced a comfortable distance from each other. She ordered the house Chardonnay and I the (guess what?) house Cabernet. I chose the salmon bruschetta as an appetizer and Wendy picked the Hawaiian ahi poke. The poke defiUnwined at 980 nitely won the show at Unwined, the ahi perfectly fresh (especially we were pumped. I stuck with important because it’s served wine ($1 off the house wines, so raw), mixed with cucumber, avo$4.50) and Chuck opted for the cado and jalapeño. The smoked Black House oatmeal stout from salmon bruschetta was a salmon Modern Times, which was much spread on top of a crostini, which too dark for me—but he enjoyed was good, though I’d expected it. (Tap beers also are $1 off for sliced salmon, and a bit too spicy happy hour.) for me. The happy hour food menu consists of one item, at $1 off (totaling $5.95). Lucky for us, it The Handle Bar was the item we most wanted to 2070 E. 20th St., Ste. 160, try: the beer cheese and house894-2337 made pretzels. Next to Christian Michaels, As soon as Chuck Rawbar’s happy hour was in my and I walked into top two. The only downside is this south Chico that it ends at 5 p.m. So, Chuck eatery, our noses and I headed over there on a perked up. It smelled Saturday, determined to take absolutely amazing advantage of the happy hour in there, the aroma menu, which is extensive and of hearty German ranges from $2 to $6. dishes lingering in Seeing as we were in a sushi the air. the flow and share a bottle of the pearl nigori sake ($5.50). It hit the spot. Rawbar also has a pretty good list of drinks on special, with beers starting at $2 and specialty cocktails running $6.50. On the food side, decision time was difficult. I tend to order simple sashimi when I go to Rawbar, but it’s not on the happy hour menu, so this was a fun opportunity to branch out. I opted for the scallop crunch roll ($6) and Chuck ordered an oyster hot shot ($2.50) and the Korean tacos ($6). The scallop crunch roll was raw scallops tempura’d and rolled up with asparagus and served with tobiko and spicy mayo. Awesome. But the Korean tacos stole the show. The short-rib meat, cabbage and kimchi sauce go together amazingly well. This is probably the only non-fish item you’ll ever catch me ordering at a sushi restaurant. Period. •

We asked some of Chico’s food purveyors:

What’s your favorite

Alvin Rowe

? d o o f t r o f com

Sweet Cottage

Popcorn. Put a little brewer’s yeast on it and I can’t look forward to any other comfort foods. It was kind of a normal family routine Saturday night. This is before VHS. We would sit out and watch The Love Boat. We’d sit out there at 9 o’clock on Saturday—this was a different situation because it was the ’70s, you couldn’t order up whatever you wanted to watch, you had to watch what was on. We’d have some popcorn and soda pop and sit down in front of the TV.

John Geiger Inday’s Filipino Food

My favorite overall food is pizza. About 25 years ago, I worked for Domino’s Pizza, delivering. I’ve eaten a lot of pizza, and I’ve never burned out on it—maybe because there are so many different kinds and they are all different and I like all of them. I used to work at Chuck E. Cheese’s too. They let me make my own pizzas, so I was able to improve on their pizzas. 28 SAVOR

Sara Gitter Boba Tealicious

Mac and cheese, because it’s creamy and cheesy and sweet at the same time. My family used to make it and I’d always love it the next day.

Jamie Hawthorne Cali’flour Foods

I’m kind of a cheeseburger girl. I just love cheeseburgers, your classic American cheese with pickles, tomatoes, add some lettuce and some bacon. I just enjoy them a lot. When I’m not eating healthy, that’s my cheat.

Joey Haney

Chico Natural Foods Cooperative

My favorite comfort food is a block of cheese, a package of prosciutto —cured meat—and two or three different kinds of fruit. I

put it on a plate, and I don’t stop until it’s done. It’s got it all: It’s sweet, it’s savory, it’s got dairy, and I always feel good afterward.

Cody Choate Smokin’ Mo’s BBQ

My favorite comfort food is ice cream. It’s delicious. There are so many flavors and chocolate always comforts everybody. You can have it when you’re happy, or when you’re sad, any time. My mom has a fondness for ice cream, too. Plus, I’m lactoseintolerant and it’s just enough so it doesn’t bother me.

Ty Hartl

Woodstock’s Pizza

It would have to be my mom’s pumpkin roll. It’s like a thin pumpkin cake, but then she does this cream cheese filling and you roll it up. I grew up eating it. It’s fattening and delicious. If I was having a bad day at school, I’d go home and eat that. It was so good. —MASON MASIS
