Morning delights
Mom’s
Five restaurants worth their weight in breakfast gold story and photos by
Meredith J. Cooper
S
ince moving to Chico nine years ago, I’ve eaten at the vast majority of local restaurants. But a few have eluded me and I realized recently that most of those fell in the breakfast category. Apparently, I just tend to cook my own morning skillets and therefore have been missing out on some local gems. So, I decided to make it my mission to visit five Chico restaurants known for their bacon ’n’ eggs (and all that other delicious morning fare). Here’s what I discovered:
The Roost When I mentioned my mission to my boyfriend, Chuck, he instantly told me I had to go to The Roost. One of my favorite breakfast dishes is corned beef hash, but I’d only ever had it out of a can. He promised The Roost would ruin that for me. I was intrigued. I’d driven by the little nook 8 SAVOR

nestled just off Park Avenue many times, but never stepped inside. When we got there around noon—they’re open till 1:30!—we had our choice of sitting at the counter, on the patio or in the dining room. We chose the latter. Chuck didn’t even look at his menu; he knew he wanted the Irish Benedict (over-easy eggs atop corned beef hash atop English muffins).
The Roost
I mulled mine over and settled on the corned beef potato pancake with scrambled eggs. All I really want to say here is “Wow.” Chuck was not wrong. My dish was awesome—the chunks of corned beef mixed into the potato pancakes tasted amazing. Then I tried the Irish Benedict and about fell off my seat. The eggs were perfect, as was the housemade Hollandaise. We’ve been back a few times since and that’s my new go-to. Well done, Roost! 1144 Park Ave., 892-1281
Morning Thunder Ever since arriving in Chico, I’ve driven by Morning Thunder and seen the seemingly endless lines out the door, especially on weekends. And I’ve heard great things about the food, too. So on an early morning before work, I headed over to give it a try. A book in hand, I took a seat at the counter and was quickly tended to. Clearly, this popular diner is accustomed to a prework crowd that needs to be in and out quickly. After browsing the menu, I settled on the biscuits and gravy, another breakfast staple, particularly because the gravy is made in-house. I also ordered a mocha, pleasantly surprised that this old-school establishment served espresso drinks. The ambiance at Morning Thunder was bright and cheery. The dining room was more or less full, and more diners spilled onto the outdoor patio. When my food arrived, I was a bit overwhelmed, as the gravy engulfed the better part of a large plate. But I eagerly dove in anyway and found the gravy quite tasty—not a hint of spice in there, which is fine by me—and the biscuits light and fluffy, making this otherwise heavy meal a little less so. 352 Vallombrosa Ave., 342-9717

Russell’s Family Restaurant
BREAKFAST continued from page 9
Nash’s 7th Avenue Omelette House I’ve eaten at Nash’s Restaurant for dinner, but despite having been told for years of their epic champagne brunches, I’d yet to try the a.m. menu. I arrived there on another early morning and was one of only a handful of diners in the main room, a spacious and elegant space that could easily host a small wedding or other fancy affair. I was quickly greeted and my orange juice was in hand before I’d even had a chance to peruse my breakfast choices. Seeing as I was in the Omelette House, I had to order an omelet. I opted for the smoked salmon variety after the waitress told me they smoke their salmon in-house. I definitely made the right choice. The salmon was simply divine. And it matched perfectly with the cream cheese blend they’ve created to go inside with it. The eggs were cooked beautifully, as were the hash browns I chose to accompany the dish. All 10 SAVOR

in all, it was the perfect combination of comfort food and gourmet flavors. Highly recommended. 1717 Esplanade, 896-1147, www.nashsrestaurantchico.com

instead for one of their “famous” skillets—I chose the Popeye skillet, with spinach, mushrooms, bacon and Swiss cheese over hash browns (instead of home fries) and topped with over-easy eggs. Take it from me: Russell’s does breakfast right. OK, I’ll vouch only for the Popeye skillet, but my, was it delicious. I almost packed some of it to go, but decided to just go for it—my book was getting really good, anyway—and finished nearly the whole thing in one sitting. Awesome. 185 Cohasset Road, 343-5543
Of all the restaurants on my list for this adventure, Russell’s is by far the most traditional diner among them. Booths line the walls and form an island in the middle. Country-Western décor adorns the walls. And an old-school counter sits in the back of the room, where diners get a glimpse of what’s going on in the kitchen. Morning Thunder Armed again with my book, seeing as it was 7 a.m., I took a spot at the counter and chatted briefly with the waitress about menu options. She suggested French toast, as that’s one of their most popular items, but I don’t have much of a sweet tooth in the morning, so I opted

Mom’s Mom’s is another one of those bright spots when it comes to breakfast dining rooms. Lots of light comes through the windows and there’s a spacious patio that wraps around the downtown eatery, lending itself nicely to people-watching. I stepped into Mom’s and immediately felt the warmth of the place. All the sunlight, plus the portraits of mothers on the walls, elicits a cheerful vibe for a morning meal. Seating myself at the counter once again, I was quickly offered a menu and a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice. That in itself was enough to start my morning off right. I opted here for the chickenfried steak, with over-easy eggs and home fries. And once again, I was not disappointed. The steak was cooked perfectly, the breading wonderfully crispy and the gravy thick and hearty. And it paired well with the lightness of the eggs and the flavorful potatoes, which were perfect for soaking up the yolks and gravy. De-lish. 209 Salem St., 893-3447, www.momschico.com
