6 SPECIAL ACTIVITIES & FITNESS CLASSES STEP AEROBICS Mondays and Wednesdays 12:00 – 12:50 p.m. (no classes Sept. 2 or Dec. 25) Punch cards (may also be used for Power Sculpt): 10 classes/$55.00, 20 classes/$90.00 or $6.50 drop in Instructor: Julia Clemons This class will be fast-paced with a blend of choreographed step aerobics training, with simpler but intense cardiovascular intervals. Body sculpting on the step may be included as well. Each class ends with abdominal exercises and stretching. WOMEN’S SELF-DEFENSE October 15 & 17 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. $20.00 for two-night class Instructor: Clint Murphy Learn basic techniques to defend yourself in different situations. This class will be part lecture and part hands-on demonstration. This class will be cancelled if minimum is not reached, so please be sure to preregister. SPECIAL ACTIVITIES, FITNESS CLASSES POWER SCULPT Tuesdays & Thursdays 12:00 – 12:50 p.m. (no class on Nov. 28) Punch cards (may also be used for Step Aerobics): 10 classes/$55.00, 20 classes/$90.00 or $6.50 drop in Instructor: Julia Clemons This is a muscle-conditioning class that will incorporate the use of weights, bands, fitness balls, and pilates-based exercises to tone and sculpt your entire body. This class is great for all levels. Moves will be incorporated to meet individual fitness needs. Instructor Julia Clemons comes with 16 years of experience. BEGINNING ARGENTINE TANGO LESSON & PRACTICE Saturdays, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. $5.00 drop in Instructor: George Fosmire There will be a lesson from 2:00–2:30 p.m. consisting of an ongoing weekly review of basic concepts of Argentine Tango with emphasis on a different topic each week. Supervised practice dancing will follow until 4:00 p.m. Drop ins welcome. PILATES MAT CLASS Mondays & Wednesdays 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. (no classes on Sept. 2 or Dec. 25) Fridays 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Punch cards: 10 classes/$50.00, 20 classes/$100.00 or $6.50 drop in Instructor: Rebecca Cheek Pilates is an exercise program that works the core muscles of the body (upper and lower back, abdominals and gluteus maximi) and can be modified for all bodies and abilities. This class will increase your strength and flexibility, tone your major muscles, and even reduce or eliminate long-term aches such as lower back pain. NEWPORT WALKING CLUB The Newport Walking Club is a community club, started to encourage people in our community to get out and walk and is sponsored by the Newport Parks and Recreation Department. The club has a great website that allows members to schedule walks and invite others. http:// www.meetup.com/Newport-Walking-Club/ DANCE N’ FITNESS Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. (no classes on Sept. 2 or Dec. 23-Jan. 3) Punch cards: 10 classes/$45.00, 20 classes/$80.00, 30 classes/$105.00 or $5.00 drop in Instructor: Mary Solomonson Dance N’ Fitness is a fun, high-energy class geared toward the intermediate to advanced-level student. Students passionate about music and dance will get the benefits of a great cardiovascular workout while feeling like they’re at a party! Muscle conditioning and floor work are included. Come and try out your first class for free. Drop-ins are always welcome! STRETCH & FLEX Free with Annual Pass Mon. & Wed. 9:30 – 10:00 a.m. 10 classes/$25.00 or $4.00 drop in (Admission free with Annual Pass to the Rec. Center) Instructor: Shannon Rackowski If you are feeling stiff in your joints and less flexible in your range of motion, give Stretch & Flex a try. This class is geared toward seniors, but not exclusive! RECREATIONAL OPEN SKATE Saturdays 12:30 – 2:00 p.m.* Daily Admission + $1 Skate rental Bring the whole family down for skating in the small gym. Skate sizes are limited, so bring your own skates or roller blades (soft wheels and no brakes) if you have them. *Recreational Skate may be cancelled due to a private rental.
