Clothed with Power excerpt

Page 1

“Clothed with Power takes the reverence and relevance of the Old Testament and marries it to the New Testament. In a brilliant unveiling of the priestly garments, Jennifer illustrates the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives and how He clothes us with power from on high. With all its splendor, each priestly garment had significance—the same significance God uses today to spill passion and purpose over our lives.” — GARI MEACHAM, best-selling author of Spirit Hunger and founder of Truly Fed Ministries.

“Oh, the irony of sending a book about being ‘clothed’ to someone who loves to shop for clothes. But Jennifer Kennedy Dean does not take us shopping through the Scriptures to find material that will fade or become a midnight snack for moths. Instead, she digs deeply — but understandably — into what it means to be clothed with power, as Jesus promised we would be. Could be. This study will show you how. And you won’t need a credit card to purchase. Joy! Joy! I love this book!” — EVA MARIE EVERSON, director, Florida Christian Writers Conference

“I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high” (Luke 24:49). “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8). “Till the Spirit is poured on us from on high, and the desert becomes a fertile field, and the fertile field seems like a forest” (Isaiah 32:15).

“Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation” (Isaiah 12:2–3).

“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters;

and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. “Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare. “Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.”

“O Lord, save us; O Lord, grant us success. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you. The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine upon us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar.”

“For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. They will spring up like grass in a meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams.

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

“When the day of Pentecost came, . . . ”

From the day after the Sabbath, the day you brought the sheaf of the wave offering [Feast of Firstfruits], count off seven full weeks. Count off fifty days up to the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then present an offering of new grain to the LORD.

“When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross (Colossians 2:13-14 NASB).

“And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you” (Romans 8:11).

“Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven . . .”

“They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them” (Acts 2:3).

“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken” (Acts 2:5–6).

“Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs — we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” (Acts 2:7–11).

“I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. Then they will follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. They will be my people, and I will be their God.”

Once the Spirit has come to take up residence in our lives, we become the Temple of the Holy Spirit. “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” (1 Corinthians 3:16).

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another [Counselor] to be with you forever — the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him” (John 14:16-21).

HOLY SPIRIT

JESUS

The world neither sees Him or knows Him

In a little while, the world will not see Jesus

But you know Him

You will see Jesus; Jesus will show Himself to you

He lives with you and will be in you

Jesus will come to you; He will be in you

“As you come to him, the living Stone — rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him — you also, like living stones, are being built

into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:4–5).

“You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth” (Revelation 5:9–10).

“For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being temptedâ€? (Hebrews 2:17-18).

“Although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bondservant, being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (author’s emphasis).
