Designed by Rem Koolhaas, it has eight horizontal layers unified with a stunning skin of structural steel and glass. MODERN MARVEL HL23, the new landmark building by acclaimed Los Angeles architect Neil Denari, welcomed its first residents this past summer in Manhattan's reinvigorated West Chelsea neighborhood. The 14-story structure houses 11 full-floor residences—including two duplexes—with sweeping views of the High Line park, thanks to floor-to-ceiling, low-iron windows. The sleek exterior is a perfect fit for the modern, clean interiors by Danish designer Thomas Juul-Hansen. Adding to the narrative of the building, HL23 collaborated with April Magen, of Magen H. Tony Duquette’s sunburst fixtures cast a twinkling glow on gray hues and silver metallic walls at the recently opened 2,200-square-foot private event space adjacent to Chicago’s Michelin star-rated Sepia. Gary Lee Partners, who designed the restaurant, was tasked with creating a sophisticated complement to the eatery’s sexy-cool interiors. Luxe sat down with longtime p.e. guerin fixture martin grubman for an intimate look at the history, philosophy and artistry behind the brand, started by master craftsman pierre emmanuel guerin when he left France for new york city in 1857, a cache of tiny chisels and hammers in hand. over 150 years later, p.e. guerin still stands in a four-story building on jane street whose simple façade belies the exquisite custom fixtures and hardware the company creates for clients around the world. the process remains much as it was when guerin himself first established his shop, and a visit to the foundry—the only one in existence in new york city—is akin to a trip back in time.

HOW DO YOU PRESERVE THE gUERin HERiTAgE? it’s a family business, and always has been. guerin’s great grandnephew, andrew ward, runs the company, and we maintain a staff of about 60. many come to us as apprentices. the process is the same as when guerin was creating his own pieces. we still use his original tools—some are even older than the company—and when one breaks, we repair or recreate it ourselves. it’s not like we can go to the hardware store and replace it. the molds are handmade using patterns from our archive; we have an entire room full of them, stacked in boxes and on shelves from floor to ceiling. there are probably 100,000 different designs.
WAlk US THROUgH THE AcTUAl PROcESS. every piece in the shop is created, start-to-finish, by hand. we cast exclusively in sand—we go through about six tons a year—and each mold can only be used once. an impression is made in the sand using a pattern, or an actual model, and the metal is poured into the sand. that produces a raw casting, which gets hand filed and braised before going to a finish filer who smooths and refines it. after that it goes to a chaser, or chiseler, who uses chisels and hammers to re-delineate the design. the piece is polished and sent back to the chaser for more detail and texture—that’s what gives it its life-like nature—before it’s polished again, plated and patinated.
HOW MUcH cUSTOM WORk iS DOnE? a lot. one time someone came in and said, “i love hippos. can you make me a hippo faucet?” and i said, “sure!” someone else came in and said, “can you make me an elephant doorknob?” it happens all the time and no matter the request, we find a way to do it. every goofy thing you’ve ever heard of, we’ve made it. we collaborate with designers, architects and historians. guerin’s original work can still be seen in the hall of records and the villard houses in new york city, and in many historically significant buildings across the country. more current work can be found in the new york city public library—that was a restoration commission—tom Ford’s store on madison avenue and in museums.
DiScUSS YOUR cOMMiTMEnT TO cRAFT. there’s a character inherent in metal that can only be achieved by hand. you cannot accomplish it through other means. i analogize it this way: a machine-made sweater is perfect and looks just like all the other machine-made sweaters. but a handmade sweater—while not perfect—has a quality that draws you to it. it’s the same with metalwork. a hand-chased fixture possesses detail and personality and breaks up the light in a way that’s incredibly appealing. you just want to touch it. it’s a tactile aspect you get from something created by hand that you just don’t get when it’s made by a machine.

Don’t call Brandon Peterson a garden designer. That title is much too fussy for a guy who likes to dig his fingers into the dirt; ‘gardener’ will do just fine. Peterson, owner of The Palm Room in Seattle, where patrons can find

potted plants, consultation and design services, and terrarium workshops, grew up in Los Angeles, dreaming of forests and farms. “I turned birds of paradise into swords and kissed the strawberries good night,” he says. Today, he takes pride in passing on this affection by pairing plants and people, rooting them to the good earth. “Plants help us relax,” he says. “Each garden is a reflection of its owner.” Peterson tends his own small urban plot and uses his shop as a lab. “Visiting my store is like walking into an oasis,” he says. “Presentation is what gets people to love plants the way I do.” Private gardens are all well and good, but someday Peterson would like to leave his mark on a public space, where people and plants are free to grow up together. thepalmroom.com; 206.782.7256

BRANDON PETERSON I got started… When I was 24 and moved into a house that had neglected roses. I asked a friend to teach me how to care for them. Spring came, and the blooms amazed me. When I realized there could be a career in this, I quit my job and got an old Ford and a shovel.
Design icons: I like artists like Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who share and document and recognize that so much of the joy is in the process of building something.
Trend you’re excited by: There’s a growing awareness of drought-tolerant plants, and people are realizing that they don’t have to remove everything to start over. Using recycled items tastefully and interpreting their uses are on my radar.
I’m reading… Just Kids, by Patti Smith, a few volumes of poetry by Robinson Jeffers and Rainer Maria Rilke, and My Summer Vacation: 1965, by Mary Swope.
Favorite space: The studio in my garden because it has power tools, train sets, every arts and crafts supply you can imagine, and a lineup of items to be made from found objects. luxe interiors

The words art glass might summon images of colorful vases, elaborate chandeliers or other functional objets d’art. But the utterly original
As part of her Funiki series, which means “atmosphere” in Japanese, Ichikawa captures washi paper, beads and cotton threads inside a handblown glass jar.
pyrographs of Tokyo-born artist Etsuko Ichikawa lend an entirely new meaning to the term; her creations are delicate charred traces of molten glass drawn on heavy Lanaquarelle cotton paper made in France. Indeed, Ichikawa’s finished work time and again bears no physical evidence of the glass used to make it, which is often recycled for new pieces. “The way I work with glass requires a certain skill level and an understanding of the material, but I use it in a very different voice or language,” says Ichikawa, who initially moved to Seattle to study at Dale Chihuly’s Pilchuck Glass School and then settled in the city to be part of its community of innovative glass artists. “I use my body as part of my process and people see that the work is gestural,” she says. “I think abstract is an accurate description, but people say it’s spiritual, ethereal and ephemeral.” etsukoichikawa.com; 206.799.1520

ETSUKO ICHIKAWA Why molten glass? When I gathered glass for the first time, I got goose bumps. I was so inspired and immediately attracted by its fluidity—the state of molten glass is like honey—and its viscosity, color and temperature.
Dream collaboration: Ryuichi Sakamoto; he’s a sound artist and performer. His music has much in common with what I try to achieve. He’s eliminated decorative things around his work and made it simple, pure and straightforward, yet so strong.
Current project: I recently finished a solo exhibition that featured a series of pyrographs, and I’ve started a new series of aquagraphs where I’m drawing Sanskrit letters by dripping water onto paper and then using soot to reveal the area that’s wet.
Art period you find most enchanting: The 1960s Fluxus movement—John Cage and Joseph Beuys are a huge influence on my art. When I first saw Beuys playing piano and making the sound of a wolf, that was shocking to me. They taught me that everything is possible; just get out of your box and experiment. luxe interiors

Craft is undergoing a renaissance at the Bellevue Arts Museum, thanks to Stefano Catalani, BAM’s director of curatorial affairs. “Craft, art and design are vast fields,” he says, “and there’s been a blurring of lines between

the three that’s given me the chance to explore how and why these fields overlap.” The answers are significant in a society that values diversity and equality, since “many conceptual artists are using craft to explore their cultural heritage, identity and traditions, and address issues of great importance,” notes Catalani. Not surprisingly, the Italian expat is a renaissance man himself, learning the classics and studying the arts and sciences in Rome, where he earned a master’s degree in engineering. But, like the artists he supports, Catalani continually breaks convention, first, by abandoning engineering for the arts, and now, with exhibitions that inextricably connect craft, art and design. “The wind blows in every direction, and I am like a weather vane,” he says. “I am here to interface and explore the ‘here and now’ through the works of these artists.” bellevuearts.org; 425.519.0770

STEFANO CATALANI Work approach: I work with the artists rather than their pieces, and put their work in a perspective that is both personal for them and shared for the audience.
Greatest influences: I admire scholars like Arthur Danto, Anthony Julius, Paul Virilio, Fredric Jameson and Rosalind Krauss.
Current project: “Travelers: Objects of Dream and Revelation,” on view through December 31, as well as the 2012 BAM Biennial, which will focus on the medium fiber. The museum is also opening a retrospective on George Nelson in October, organized by the Vitra Design Museum in Germany.

WHOLE GRAINS It’s sometimes easy to get lost in the sleek, minimalist lines of contemporary design; there’s something inherently soothing and appealing about a blank, uninterrupted surface. The drawback, however, is that there’s a very thin line between clean and sterile, and the team at Ornare had to tread it carefully. So, they paired the super modern cabinetry of their new Satyrium series with reclaimed wood on the walls and table and carefully sourced antique light pendants from Brazil to bring a warm, lived-in feel to this contemporary-meets-organic kitchen. “The idea was to give the space a real human element,” says Claudio Faria, director of Ornare Miami. “All of the natural woods make the straight, sharp shapes of the cabinetry more comfortable and homey.” A custom-made range hood and plenty of wine storage courtesy of GE Monogram coolers work to introduce a bit of stainless steel to the otherwise matte finishes used throughout, while illuminated shelves pop against their wooden backdrop for an unexpected touch.

CLEAN WASH Nature calls—literally—in this bathroom by Dion McCarthy, Mark Kirkhart and Andrew Alper, of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara-based DesignARC. Pocketing glass doors slide away to create a seamless transition between indoors and out, offering a stunning view of the reservoir in the distance from the cozy contours of the Agape bathtub. “Absolutely every part of the room has a view of and a strong relationship to the outdoors,” says McCarthy. “We let the site dictate the texture and color palette, which brings a nice organic quality to the space.” It’s a quality that is carried through to the knotty wood bench and chair and the interesting metallic-inspired finish of the glazed, porcelain shower tiles by Tau Ceramica from Stone Source. While the bathroom is purposely spare to keep the focus on the unique materials and panoramic vistas, the designer is careful to point out how much the space accomplishes with its less-is-more credo. “It’s not the kind of minimalism you see in a museum,” says McCarthy. “There’s an effortless accessibility to it that speaks unabashedly to and about the human body.”

when a modern home inspires talk of ancient artifacts and dinosaurs, there is something radical going on behind the scenes far beyond the use of glass, concrete and steel.
And everyone involved in
the building of this contemporary gem nestled into a lakeside setting in Seattle points back to the one element that cemented the home’s progressive outcome: the homeowner, Anne Croco. Architect Stuart Silk and design principal Michael Troyer say she was a dream client. “This is the fourth home we’ve designed for her and a true departure for her stylistically. She wanted a stripped-down environment and minimal surroundings,” says Silk, who, along with Troyer, joined forces with the firm’s project manager Michael McFadden on the residence. Croco blames her modern turn on her past, as she studied

seeing felt good to me,” she explains, attributing the austere impulse to her state of mind. “I am entering a new era of keeping things simple in my life.” Though she was ensconced in the French countryside when construction was underway, Croco was highly involved. The team placed a camera on site so that she could be part of the action. Builder John Hoedemaker marveled at Croco’s savvy, as her input from so far away was spot-on. “Her level of sophistication in terms of understanding what we were doing made the process wonderful,” says Hoedemaker, who worked with Chris Lange on the build. “The word ‘collaboration’ is often used to describe projects, but with this one it was fitting.”

design collective The custom hearth in the living room was designed using pre-cast concrete from Dogpaw Design, while blackened steel surrounds the Montigo fireplace. The homeowner paired a Living Divani sofa from Limn with a Tord Boontje table by Fiam, Marcel Wanders’ end tables for Cappellini and Flexform chairs.
light weight The main entry door—custom steel and glass by Argent Fabrication—pivots open, its design allowing for the maximum infusion of light. The design team wanted the home to be quiet yet richly rewarding to the eye, so light quality was an important consideration throughout.

Their efforts birthed an open, airy home with infusions of soft light and pale tones interrupted only by occasional pops of color, which Silk says were born of Croco’s impishness. “She’s a bit of a troublemaker!” he quips. “She brought in an Hermès purse and said, ‘I want this orange in the house!’ ” Bright hues in the art express her wishes, as does the lacquered glow coating the top of the kitchen cabinetry, which is visible when descending the stairs and from the reflection emanating up to the ceiling.

and present but we didn’t want it to overwhelm so the materials were thoughtfully considered,” he explains, noting the wood treads and the dark steel as examples of their studied choices. “We brought a beach feel to the interiors with the weathered textures and bleached tones,” says Troyer. “But ease was also paramount, so we concentrated on a nice marriage of warm whites and soft materials.” The home’s finishes and color palette got an added boost courtesy of Croco’s background in design, and input from Seattle designer Michael McQuiston. And she turned to contemporary art and design retailer Limn to help her source the pieces she selected for her new space—Eric Fassett, Limn’s showroom manager at the time, played a significant role in aiding her. luxe interiors

Outside, landscape designer Mike Doyle took the home’s quietude and gave it greater depth. “We decided to respond to the site in a geological sense—considering the time when the last ice floe came through,” he explains. “Our aim was to create an ancient glacial meadow.” Ginkgo and metasequoia were chosen because they have survived since the time dinosaurs roamed. The latter was thought to be extant only in fossilized form until a British expedition to China uncovered a live specimen during the 1940s. “Stuart and I worked with metasequoia on a project in China and felt it would be perfect to bring the spirit of our plans to fruition with Anne’s home,” Doyle says. “She understood that we were striving to create a garden that spoke of man’s link to the past, eternal evolution and our need to find those ancient echoes.” L

He likes the location right
on the water—he and his wife Lisa have been enjoying the islands for years—and Friday Harbor has nice restaurants and all, but passion really enters his voice when he talks about the view. “We love the broad overlook onto Griffin Bay that seems to go and go all the way to Seattle and beyond to Mount Rainier,” he says. While the house might seem as expansive as the views, it actually had to be slotted onto a sliver of land perched between the road and the bay. Delicately placing the structure was crucial to saving three

mature fir trees, and meeting all the criteria required by local authorities was also complex. Losh explains that there were road setbacks, seaside setbacks and a pair of nesting eagles nearby. “We wanted the house to fit the site, not force the site to fit the house,” he insists. Architect Geoffrey Prentiss agrees. “When you have problems like that, you end up with good architecture,” he says. One of the better problems Prentiss faced here was the owners’ desire to maximize those views. His strategy was to site the house in its native, natural surroundings, and keep most of the rooms aligned along a gentle stone arc wall matching

dollar vistas. “We call it a pavilion, but I think of it as a lighthouse,” says Prentiss, who collaborated with project manager Brandon Woodward. This structure stands on the earth draped in glass and powder-coated steel to resist the marine air. With floors and an outer deck of Brazilian slate and a ceiling of Douglas fir, the pavilion supports windows with slender horizontal bars paralleling the wide horizon beyond. And while the view offers enough of an inspired backdrop, artful decisions inside give form to function: In the living room, for example, a fireplace claims one end, fronted by a bench of basalt, and the walnut dining table is lit from above by light passing through a glass sculpture suspended where a chandelier would normally hang.

“The word to describe this project is ‘harmonious,’ ” says designer Holly McKinley. All the colors inside are cued to organic hues outside, she explains. The bedroom’s duvet echoes the meadow beyond. A glass pattern on the master bath partitions recalls a rain-drippy day. Repurposed Chinese elm flooring calls to mind the trees that were saved during construction. And the living room area rug’s layered greens seem woven from the panoply of forest just beyond the windows.

timber and twilight The house perches on a sliver of land that seems to jut onto Griffin Bay. The height of the ceiling inside extends the views, while its material— Douglas fir—warmly balances the cool color of the water. Stone pavers juxtapose the use of steel by Andgar Corporation.

paneled diversion The den is a wood-walled nook residing between the kitchen and the master bedroom. Architect Geoffrey Prentiss designed it using cherrywood to tie it to the kitchen. Built-ins create a cozy office area for the owner.
Perhaps the subtlest color selections were saved for the roof of this house, but not the shingle or tile choice—this home has a planted roof. “It was a given on this site,” says Prentiss. The owners wanted the house to blend in, not stand out. “We used 8,000 sedum plants,” says landscape designer Warwick Hubber, who implemented gabion basket retaining walls, and designed and fabricated steel elements and lighting throughout the landscape. Sedum are those colorful, waterstoring succulents that line paths in gardens around the world.

calm creation Chinese elm climbs the master bedroom wall as wainscoting, tying the private and public rooms together. McKinley custom-designed the nightstands using cherry, metal and mahogany. A Baker chair in John Hutton fabric from Susan Mills Showroom reposes in one corner; Nessen sconces cast a soft glow.
shower power A curved stone wall passes through the entire house and ends up as one wall of a glassed-in shower. The pattern on partitions from Island Glass Service conjures a rain shower. A Flux fixture and a Kohler sink from Keller Supply Company join the vanity area.

A palette of yellow, green, white and purple in this case creates a constantly changing organic mural. “The roof is strong visually yet blends the house right into the landscape,” builder Peter Kilpatrick says. It does make you wonder though, if Lisa Losh ever turns to her husband to say, “Honey, I think you need to weed the roof this weekend.” L

While
in medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, Brodie had a friend who would take him sailing off Long Island on weekends. “That exposed me to seeing a lot of shingle-style homes,” he recalls. “I swore that if I ever had the opportunity, I’d want to reinvent that vernacular in the Northwest.” Today, the Olympia orthopedic surgeon and his family reside in a house at the southern edge of Puget Sound that is rooted in East Coast shingle style with its gambrel roof, copper moldings and, of course, shingle siding. The aesthetic is surprisingly well suited for its Northwest locale, particularly the waterside site. The houses that Brodie saw while sailing back East were designed in long strips to give every room a view of the ocean. This, too, is how the Wood residence is laid out.

Architect Stephen Sullivan and project architect Jeff Adberg, AIA, who worked with builder Mark Hamilton and designer David Bettencourt Goularte, endeavored to authentically recreate the desired aesthetic. Sullivan was raised in New England and shares the owner’s affinity for the style. He fondly describes a hierarchy of details in the house: A window above the front entrance foyer, for example, is deliberately more ornate to express the importance of this central gathering space. Some of the construction was also especially time-consuming, like the

steaming of individual exterior shingles to conform to the slant of the gambrel roof. “Great care was taken to make this historically accurate,” Hamilton says. “If you drive up to this house, it feels like it’s been here for a century.” As one enters, passing underneath a mezzanine with a winding staircase to the side, the dining room lies directly ahead with a striking view to the water through sparkling French doors. “It was important to express this as a family center,” Sullivan says. “It was a symbolism we worked into the plan. You come right into the core where people gather together and eat, and you also get the view. The journey completes under the low ceiling entry and out through the trees.”

To one side of the dining room lies the kitchen and a family room in a semi-detached wing, which is common to this style. “The owners came from a more formally furnished home and realized that they wanted something different,” says Goularte, who incorporated his clients’ antiques into the design but juxtaposed them with new furniture provided through Drees, the Olympia-based retail store he owns with his wife. “The Woods appreciate the light and sunny colors associated with Provençe, and shingle-style houses traditionally have very eclectic interiors. I said, ‘Go for it.’ ”

On the home’s other end is the family library and music room, where the kids can study and take lessons on the piano. It’s also a place for Brodie and Cindi to read quietly amidst rich floor-to-ceiling cherrywood bookshelves. The music room also acts as a transition to the quieter master bedroom, the design of which began with the Woods’ antique armoire. Goularte created custom draperies to balance the handsome piece, adding a second layer of fabric to give dimension. Given the unwavering commitment to detail and authenticity, it’s no surprise that the house is intended to be passed down to Brodie and Cindi’s children and grandchildren, just like a family heirloom. “The Woods wanted to create a home that was a house for generations. That’s how they described it,” Sullivan says. “I don’t always get people thinking long-term like that.” L

before jd shin endeavored to have a house built for him and his wife, young, he made sure he did his homework.
By the time he walked into architect Liz Dexter’s office, he had nine binders bursting with photographs of architectural and design details. His research revealed an affinity for minimalism, and it was apparent that in the Shins’ new home, the quiet beauty of clean lines and spare spaces would be owed to thoughtful design choices that satisfy both form and function. “The Shins wanted something classic and natural, but also contemporary,” explains Dexter, who helmed the architecture and interior architectural details with associate architect Tom Shaw and interiors associate Tiffany Casey Alfrey. The materials palette, for instance, was carefully considered,

not just to bring warmth to the cavernous living spaces, but also to complement the wooded surroundings of Lake Oswego. Indiana limestone and dark sapele-wood windows—strong, earthy counterpoints to the inherently cool architecture—give the midcentury-style exterior texture and richness. Inside the house, Adriana limestone floors, the great room’s white marble fireplace, and walnut custom cabinetry in the kitchen, master bedroom and office further strengthen the organic bond between the house and its rustic site. “With the amount of wood and rock in and around the house, you could almost compare it to high-end camping,” laughs Mimi Shin, the homeowners’ daughter, a designer who worked on the interiors of the residence.

glass menagerie The owners have made a ritual out of watching the sun set through the great room’s lakeside floor-toceiling sapele-wood windows from Quantum Windows & Doors. Roofing by Architectural Metal Works and Pioneer Roofers tops off the home.

With her home base in California, Mimi tapped local designer Jennifer Baines to help achieve what Mimi calls “warm modern” interiors: In the case of her parents’ house, this definition encompasses eclectic, midcentury and Asian aesthetics. Custom-designed modern pieces such as the elegant steel barstools in the kitchen and the leather-wrapped desk in the office speak to the modern warmth. And while it took some effort to convince the Shins that their old furniture and art wasn’t “junk”—“their instinct was to replace all of their existing pieces for the new house,” says Baines—many of the antiques were updated to befit the home’s contemporary mood.

Though the architecture and furnishings satisfy the Shins’ minimalist leanings in an inviting, organic way, it was equally important for the outdoor gardens to be just as mindful. The seemingly austere, Japanese-inspired landscape architecture by Steven Koch interprets the rugged surroundings with reflecting pools to symbolize the lake and sculptural Douglas firs to represent the woods. “Here, the landscape design embraces and enhances the property, just like the mounting for a gem,” says Koch. Great strides were taken to ensure that the towering evergreens on the property were carefully protected. “They make the place so special,” says JD, who points to a pair of eagles nesting in a tree near the deck.

the constant garden Landscape architect Steven Koch honored the surroundings with a Japanese-style garden of indigenous rocks and trees, reflecting pools and a bridge to metaphorically unite the indoors and outdoors. Realizing the feature was a joint effort between Hollenbach & Hurd and Coady Construction.

Making homegrown produce readily available, quite literally, at the homeowners’ fingertips, is a good example of the design strategies used

to suit the couple; others include ergonomic countertops and vanities measured precisely to their stature, textured stone floors with non-slip surfaces, and sensory LEDs in the passageways to gently illuminate nighttime comings and goings. The home, with its sleek lines and modern materials and finishes, surpasses JD’s bursting binders and gives new meaning to the term minimalism. Still, in the spirit of simplicity, a 200-year-old urn sitting plump in the corner of the master bedroom says it all without saying a word—its timeworn texture, clean shape and cool gray hue an understated embodiment of the house and its misty neck of the woods. HigH Style It’s fitting that Zang Toi’s fashion atelier is dubbed “House of Toi.” It is, after all, where the designer crafts his luxury couture collections that, unbeknownst to many, bear striking similarities to his Upper East Side pied-à-terre. “There’s an element of glamour that shows in both my home design and fashion line,” Toi says. Inspired by Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, Toi tested his creative prowess when he set out to revamp an early-20th-century apartment with preciously detailed antiques and opuFashion veteran Valentino created these peep-toe pumps with raised black embroidery atop cream leather to mimic a lace finish. So, it comes as no surprise that Hartig’s eye for refashioning antiques seems to effortlessly translate to interiors, too. “I love collecting, being resourceful, mixing things up and surprising people,” Hartig says.
