The Nerve Centre’s Fab Lab is a partnership with the worldrenowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is one of the first to open in Ireland. It joins a network of similar labs around the world in exploring the possibilities of exciting new fabrication technology. Students will make their own personalised key rings - specially commissioned for this year’s 25th Foyle Film Festival. Students will also have the opportunity to design and fabricate another largescale project (for example creating their own dinosaur) that they can take back into the classroom. PLACES AVAILABLE: 20

INTRODUCTORY ‘STEREO-3D-IN-ADAY’ WORKSHOP with Neil Richards from THE DIGITAL FILM COMPANY VENUE NERVE CENTRE RELEVANCE KEY STAGES 3 & 4, & SIXTH FORM SUBJECT LINKS MIA / TECHNOLOGY LEARNING FOR LIFE & WORK THEMES CREATIVITY/INNOVATION/AMBITION

The 25th Foyle Film Festival has joined forces with The Digital Film Company to provide an introductory workshop in what’s set to be one of the biggest growth areas in TV and film production over the next few years. According to Neil Richards, “Up to now, stereo 3D has been the realm of big budget feature films and blue-chip TV productions, but all that is changing with the move

to internet delivery and widespread use of mobile platforms for viewing. The demand for 3D content looks set to explode now that 3D TVs cost no more than conventional sets and “glasses-free” tablets, laptops and computers are becoming widespread. The technology is changing at the production and post-production end too, with the arrival of inexpensive 3D cameras, rigs, and stereoscopic software editing now possible on Mac and PC computers. Production costs have fallen as equipment becomes cheaper and experience has been gained within the industry.” This introductory 3D workshop covers basic stereo 3D principles, terminology and human physiological constraints leading to an explanation of the factors that produce good and bad 3D viewing experiences. Stereo 3D technology, standards, cameras, displays and 3D cinema are then explained. Emphasis in the last half of the workshop is on handson filming with the footage reviewed live on 3D TVs. AVAILABLE PLACES: 30
