Hebburn Town FC 1912-2012 100 YEARS IN BRIEF

H

ebburn was very different back in 1912, the year the football club was formed. The collieries that had changed it from a small agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employment of 1,864 men; the shipyards launched by Andrew Leslie were in full vigour; and the town, eleven years earlier, had welcomed a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle. Reyrolle opened an engineering works, which initially employed just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak, Reyrolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures, and export to 70 countries being known worldwide. The company also started a football team, and, encouraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn history, he provided the sports ground on which team still plays on in the Northern League. The football team formed in 1912 were elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League. There had been plenty of football teams in the before 1912, most notably Hebburn Argyle – who kicked off in 1882 by Father Toner, the priest at St Aloysius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derby games with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000. The Geordie town also had shinty and curling clubs and even an annual Highland Games which was organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society. This 1912 team progressed, and flourished in the 1930s, followed by a wartime season in the North

Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and then returned to the Northern Combination where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles as we were still known as, had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points. The Tyneside club then had 28 pretty indifferent seasons in the Wearside League, though they won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968. In 1988 the name was changed to Hebburn and an application was made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promotion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy. The ground was improved, other clubs canvassed and then Hebburn got a lucky break when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding to play elsewhere. The team which had finished fifth in the Wearside League and then played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, before winning promotion and the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992 before being relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. The club then won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000. In the 2011-12 season, Hebburn Town reached the FA Cup fourth qualifying round and a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places. This was the club’s furthest ever run in the competition and the Hornets also secured promotion to the Northern League Division 1 for their centenary year.

The Platinum Lounge Y ou may be wondering about the new stand that has appeared behind the goal at the Victoria Road end of the ground?

The FA imposes fairly rigorous standards for teams in the Northern League and these actually differ between the first and second divisions. Thus when we were promoted, officials from The FA carried out an inspection to ensure compliance of their ground grading regulations.

Their report identified that we did not have sufficient covered accommodation for spectators and we were given until the end of March 2013 to comply with this and other smaller issues. This was a somewhat serious situation as if we did not meet the ground grading criteria we would be relegated from the division. To ensure that we are ‘fit for purpose’ we have built the new stand and also crosshatched’ the area in front of

the main stand – spectators are not allowed to stand in front of this stand and signs have been erected to point this out. We have also addressed the other items identified by The FA. The inspection is scheduled for 28 March, after our print deadline for this programme, so hopefully, as you read this, we have passed the inspection test. As you can imagine, it hasn’t been cheap to meet the criteria. The bad weather continues to cause major disruption to the fixtures; simultaneously, our run of disappointing results continues and we hope Paul Bennett and the lads can turn this round with a solid finish to the season and keep us mid-table – a very successful outcome in our first season back in the first division. Today we welcome our visitors from Bishop Auckland and hope that their officials, players and spectators enjoy a pleasant afternoon on Tyneside – not too pleasant, hopefully, as we look to repeat our earlier victory at Heritage Park when we left with a 1-0 win. We also extend a warm welcome to our three match

The Dugout I write this on Wednesday morning as I’m preparing for tonight’s all-important clash with Sunderland RCA.

In our last home game we were up against Celtic Nation and after a dreadful last two months we played well early on, panicked a bit, but managed to defeat Celtic Nation and claim a valuable three points.

Then we had two games cancelled due to the weather and rolled on to Norton expecting to kick on and put in another hearty performance. However, that was not what happened; it was quite the opposite in fact. The lads just didn’t perform. When one player doesn’t perform, you can maybe get through it, but we had a whole team that didn’t turn up. The lads were rightly

embarrassed and things have been said, which will remain private to the dressing room, but these are the same lads that got us to fourth place in this league after 18 games. So yes, I have every confidence in them to see us through, starting tonight at RCA and then again on Saturday against Bishops. Bishops will be a hard game as they will come looking for revenge after we defeated them 1-0 at their place with an excellent team display complimented by shape, work rate, togetherness and belief…all the things we need to carry into the remaining games of this season. Enjoy the game!

Bishop Auckland Play SONNY ANDREWS A former scholar at Middlesbrough FC, he has been a prolific striker wherever he has played, frequently finishing the season as the club’s top goal scorer. Had Northern Premier League experience with Whitby Town before moving on to Norton and Stockton Ancients where he was top scorer. That was followed by a season at Shildon, where he again finished as the club’s top scorer. Spent last season at Spennymoor Town, where his 27 goals made him the club’s top marksman and helped Moors lift their third consecutive Northern League title.

GARETH AYERS Goalkeeper spent three years at Durham City in the Northern Premier League, he moved to Esh Winning mid way through last season but sustained an ankle injury which limited his appearances for the club. Signed for Bishops last December.

JAMIE HARWOOD Versatile player who can operate anywhere on the right or central midfield, he started his career at Crook Town before moving to Worksop Town in the Northern Premier League. Also played for Harrogate Town before moving to Gateshead where he made 97 appearances and scored thirty goals playing an integral part as they won back-to-back promotions that took the club into the Conference Premier.

Joined Shildon in 2010 finishing the season as the club’s Player of the Year before spending last season at league champions Spennymoor Town.

DANIEL HAWKINS Formerly with Middlesbrough FC, he signed from Shildon in October 2010 making an instant impact scoring on his debut at Newcastle Benfield and scoring Bishops’ first competitive goals at Heritage Park against league leaders Consett in early November. Finished the season with eight goals from 23 appearances, including four as a substitute. Scored thirteen goals last season from 30 appearances, including five as a substitute. His feat in scoring Bishops’ first ever hat-trick at Heritage Park against Penrith in November 2011 was filmed by NLFPP.

CRAIG HODGSON Played at Second Division Whickham for three seasons, he made the move to Bishops in December 2010 before going on to establish himself as a first team player. Scored his first goal for the club at Jarrow Roofing in February. Some excellent performances in the latter end of a season where he scored twice in 21 games saw him named the club’s Young Player of the Year.

PETER JEFFRIES Now in his fifth season with the club, having joined from the Wearside League’s Hartlepool

Town in 2008, he was made first choice keeper with the arrival of Colin Myers, who immediately recognised Peter’s ability. He has since gone on to produce a series of match winning displays picking up numerous Man of the Match Awards. His superb form in 2009/10 meant he deservedly swept the board at the end of season presentation evening picking up Supporters’, Players’, Management Team and Website player of the year. Ever present and dependable the following season, making 53 appearances, it was no surprise when he once again collected all four end of season Player of the Year Awards. Injury restricted him to just 37 appearances last season, he continually pesters the club secretary to buy him a pink goalkeeping outfit.

ANDREW JOHNSON Joined the club at the start of last season and had statisticians looking at the history books in a season where he scored 39 league goals and 9 cup goals in 47 appearances. Scored four in the demolition of Billingham Town at heritage Park in January, he also notched up four hat-tricks, including two in consecutive rounds of the FA Vase. Has Conference North experience with Blyth Spartans he first played under Colin Myers at Brandon United and then Jarrow Roofing. Has also played for Tow Law Town and Shildon. Contracted player.

yer Profiles CHRISTOPHER LAWSON Now in his fourth season having signed from local football in August 2009. Immediately forced his way into the first team with a number of impressive displays, his first goal was a last minute winner against Esh Winning in December 2009. Settled into the right-back role, but he can also play at centre half and has even been known to occupy some other positions when required. Made just 12 appearances last season, scoring two goals.

ADAM MCLANE A tall, no nonsense, old fashioned, all action centre half who takes no prisoners and has a fantastic will to win, he added some much needed determination to our back-line when he joined last season. Spent all his previous career with Whickham FC, where he won a Durham Challenge Cup winners medal in 2006. Notched up 29 games last season, and scored twice: at home to South Shields and then on the road at Penrith.

KIERAN MEGRAN A former scholar at Middlesbrough FC, he moved on to Darlington FC before making his Northern League debut for Consett, where he was named Young Player of the Year as they finished the season as runnersup. He can play at full back or in central midfield, and spent last season at Esh Winning where he was Player of the Year.

SIMON ORD First signed for Bishops in September 2009 from neighbours Shildon, fitting into the centre of midfield, but also helping out when required at left full back. Memorably scored a spectacular 25 yard match winner against league champions Spennymoor Town in 2009/10. Returned to the club in March 2012 after a year at Esh Winning, he made just one appearance for the Two Blues last season, playing in the narrow win against Ashington.

DANNY PARKER A former professional with Motherwell in the Scottish Premier League, he then went on to play for Durham City in the Northern Premier League and signed for Bishops in December 2011 before making his debut the following month at Billingham Synthonia. Made 14 appearances last season.

STEPHEN SALVIN Club Captain. First played for Bishops in 2001/02, he played a significant part in the 2003/04 and 2004/05 Northern Premier League campaigns, winning all four end of season players awards in the latter. Left in Autumn 2005 to join Newcastle Blue Star winning the Northern League and Cup double before moving to Gateshead. Then followed a return to Blue Star before a move back to Bishops. One of only two players to have played ‘home’ games for the Bishops at

Kingsway, Dean Street, Brewery Field, Darlington Road and Heritage Park. Won the BAFC Website Player of the Year Award for season 2008/09. Made 21 appearances last season, scoring twice.

PHIL SHEAD Highly rated player, who can operate equally well in defence or midfield, he joined the club on a permanent basis last season after a couple of appearances the season before. Was with Middlesbrough FC for eleven years and scored the first goal for the ’Boro at the Commemorative Match at the opening of Heritage Park. Made 21 appearances last season, including one as a substitute.

ARRAN WEARMOUTH An exciting young striker who came to the club following spells at Middlesbrough FC, where he was a trainee scoring over 30 goals in his first season. Big, strong, and very quick attacking player with a very good eye for goal. Played for Lumley Under18’s where he won a Durham County Cup winners medal, scoring a hat-trick helping them to victory. Scored his first goal for Bishops against Stokesley in the League Cup. Made 32 appearances last season, including nine as substitute, scoring six goals before a shoulder injury prematurely ended his season.

Bishop Auckland T he kings of non-league football was how Bob Paisley described Bishop Auckland. The future Liverpool legend had “two wonderful seasons” with the County Durham side culminating in an FA Amateur Cup, Northern League and Durham Challenge Cup treble in 1939. “The most pleasurable experience (of my life) was when we beat Willington in the Amateur Cup,” Paisley recalled towards the end of his long career.

The Two Blues have always been a high-brow club. Founded by theological students from Cambridge and Oxford Universities, they’d already lifted six Northern League titles and two Amateur Cups when Hebburn Town were formed 100 years ago. Ten-time Amateur Cup winners and Northern League champions on no fewer than nineteen occasions, nigh on fifty players have moved straight from Bishop Auckland into league football since Paisley departed for Liverpool. John Barnwell played for Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, Mick Gooding made over 300 appearances for Reading, Seamus O’Connell won a First Division title with Chelsea and Warren Bradley, just as famously, went to Manchester United, where he became the first man to play for England at amateur and professional level in the same season. O’Connell and Bradley both turned out in the club’s 1950s heyday, when Bishop lifted three successive Amateur Cups, six Northern League titles and reached the fourth round proper of the FA Cup, eliminating Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town

before falling at the hands of eventual semi-finalists York City. In later years Lawrie McMenemy began his managerial career with a Northern League championship before coaching Southampton to an FA Cup and second place in the Football League. Three times quarter-finalists in the FA Trophy, the Two Blues eventually left the Northern League in 1988. In 1996-97 they finished second behind Northern Premier League champions Leek Town, missing out on promotion to the Conference by a single place. Having reached their modern high water mark, the club suffered the first relegation in their long and illustrious history in 2002. Twelve months after leaving Kingsway, the famous, threesided stadium which had housed the Two Blues since 1886, Bishops were forcibly relegated after failing to meet ground grading requirements. Demoted back into the Northern League at the end of the 2005-06 season, the club only avoided the ignominy of dropping into the Second Division when Durham City took promotion in 2008. Since new manager Colin Myers pulled off the great escape in 2009, however, the Two Blues have been on an upward trajectory, finishing eighth last season and improving to fifth this time round. In Peter Jeffries Myers has one of the league’s most consistent and talented goalkeepers at his disposal, while Andrew Johnson – 48 goals in 47 games last season – is the division’s most prolific scorer. With a thirtieth Durham Challenge Cup Final still to come against local rivals Spennymoor Town, let’s hope better times are ahead for one of north-east England’s most famous old clubs.

Hebburn Town Official Programme

The Two Blues and the Reds A t the time of the Munich air disaster Matt Busby’s Manchester United side had high hopes of becoming only the third English club to win three successive league titles. Six points behind Wolverhampton Wanderers with 14 games remaining, they’d also made it through to the fifth round of the FA Cup and their second European Cup semi-final in a row. Munich took twenty-three lives and decimated the first team squad, leaving eight dead and two who would never play football again.

Short of players and with a backlog of fixtures, Busby turned for help to the man who’d captained his Great Britain amateur side to fourth in the 1948 Olympic Games. Bob Hardisty arrived at Old Trafford with seven Northern League titles, three Amateur Cups and two of his Bishop Auckland teammates, Derek Lewin and Warren Bradley. All three turned out in United’s reserve team, Hardisty doubling up as coach. “Just stand in the middle of the pitch and give the youngsters the benefit of your experience. There’s no need to do anything else at all,” Busby told him. The trio of Northern League men made their Central League debut against Burnley in front of a crowd of 11,000. “I remember being amazed at the crowds thinking we must have been brought to a first team game by mistake,” Lewin, another three-time Amateur Cup winner who had also represented Great Britain in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, recalled. Lewin and Hardisty would return to the Northern League, but right-winger Warren Bradley stayed on. After making his first-team debut against Bolton

Wanderers, he played for the Reds a total of 63 times, scoring 20 goals. In May 1959, little over a year after appearing in the Northern League, Walter Winterbottom selected him to play for England on their tour of Mexico and the United States. He played three times, scoring twice. A knee injury eventually cut short his Old Trafford career, Bradley losing his place to Johnny Giles before moving on to Bury. He took up a teaching post in Stretford – “All I really wanted was to be a headmaster,” he said shortly before his death in 2007. The help Bishop Auckland gave Manchester United hasn’t been forgotten at Old Trafford. When the Two Blues play their next evening fixture at their Tindale Park ground, they’ll run out under a set of floodlights donated by the club they lent three players to over half a century ago.

ixture postponements continue, with little halting the extended winter weather we’re on the receiving end of. Ross Gregory talked in the last programme about the benefits of having an artificial pitch (certainly Durham City have staged games that would’ve been postponed on a grass pitch), while fewer teams in the league would’ve eased the fixture congestion in advance. Whatever happens, lessons need to be learned. The weather this March reminds me of the weather in Sweden, where football is played from this month until November. Could a summer league be something we see more of if winters don’t improve? Ireland moved to a summer league a few years ago, though that was to increase revenue and attendances by not competing with the English Premier League. I haven’t heard of any discussions that are going on, or are planned, to identify lessons, or to engage with clubs. Hopefully the League Management Committee isn’t as frozen as many of our pitches have been.

D

o the Northern League and clubs within it need to think bigger and act more professional? I was asked that question recently, and it’s something that pretty much applies across all of non-league football. For example, does having a decent programme enhance the experience for supporters? This programme changed over the course of the season and sponsorship – albeit on a small scale – has increased, along with sales. Do supporters care, especially when they are reading ‘errors’ for their money. Celtic Nation provided little squad information while even Bishops have provided Callum Hassan as a squad player today (he moved to West Auckland in December and then, at the start of this month, transferred to Billingham Synthonia). There’s a misconception that acting professionally in a non-professional

environment actually takes up more time. If money is being spent on anything then quality should be expected. This is an area that nonleague clubs often fail in. True, volunteers need to be skilled, yet how many clubs look to operate outside of their comfort zone? How many have really launched into this contemporary era? Even the Northern League focuses heavily an anti-swearing campaign to bring fans in rather than looking at improved media output. Times change and the social media generation is well in charge. People expect, demand, immediate news that is concise and correct. This is today’s society – fail to understand that and you fall by the wayside in business. Does this equate to professionalism? Most definitely. Will many people be interested in clubs if they fail to communicate, to deliver what society now expects? Probably not.

Match Report Wednesday, 27 March 2013, Meadow Park

D

espite having the better of the match, Hebburn Town fell to a 1-0 defeat against Sunderland RCA and now find themselves only seven points clear of the drop zone and their horrendous run of form in 2013 continues. During a first half where both teams had a number of chances - few of which were clear cut - RCA shaded the possession. Stuart Nicholson had the better of Hebburn's opportunities and having shot wide from the edge of the box after 17 minutes, the forward then managed to get a half touch on a Wayne Gredziak cross and headed just wide right minutes later.

Sunderland RCA Hebburn Town

1 0

Four minutes later, James Luccock's cross was spilled by Foden and with Gredziak about to touch the ball into an open goal from four-yards out, the referee, who was in poor positions throughout the game, failed to see a clear push that sent the Hebburn striker sprawling.

On a rock hard pitch, both teams struggled to pass the ball cleanly, but RCA overcame that five minutes into the second half.

Dan Kirkup's header was then cleared off the line by ex-Hornet Adam McGuinness after 78 minutes before the referee then failed to spot Thomas Marron's shove on Nicholson in the final minute, again due to poor positioning when the ball was inside the penalty area.

Dan Regan's goal kick hung in the air and after was Jamie Clarke collected the ball, his forward pass split the defence and allowed Gary Shaw to slip the ball under the Hebburn 'keeper for the only goal of the game.

Hebburn, who at Christmas were looking at the top six, now have the bottom six targeting them and Billingham Town, after their away win at Bedlington Terriers, are seven points behind having played one game more than the Hornets.

From that point onwards, Hebburn pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

An Easter Saturday home game against Bishop Auckland is next for Hebburn as they search for only their third win of 2013. Having created a number of chances in this game, more than any other match during this wretched run, Hebburn have not lost hope of a return to their great form of 2012.

After 69 minutes, a long Gredziak throw was volleyed towards goal by Scott Donaldson but only found the waiting clutches of RCA 'keeper Mark Foden.
