• Playing varsity sports in high school is challenging enough. Kicking for a top 5 NCAA football program at the University of Oklahoma and getting signed by the Green Bay Packers is a wholly greater challenge. On a few occasions this summer, NDCL alum Gabe Brkic ’18 came back home to kick on his favorite field at Lion Stadium. Our core values are Justice, Respect, Integrity, Community, and Excellence. Witnessing Gabe kick, knowing his love of our school, and knowing how he rallies our community with hope, inspires me greatly, knowing our core values live in our student community and flourish in our alumni. message our and Continual

I hope throughout their time on campus, our students recognize that they are loved, challenged to be great, and called to find joy everyday. I hope this letter finds you well, enjoying time with family and friends and relishing warmer weather. We have had a truly remarkable summer on campus.

• It was July 4th at 6pm. I had returned to campus to water the grass seed at Lion Stadium. A number of us had been taking turns with this task for the hot and dry weeks this summer, wanting everything to be ready for our students’ return in August. On this holiday weekend, working every day were David, Jesus, Jorge, and Victor. Four of the most decent, hardest working people I have ever met. In less than three weeks, working every day –including the holiday weekend – they built the new 1400 seat grandstand and press box. We educate leaders who transform the world. These gentlemen build tirelessly throughout the country so we all • Replacing so much 30 year old roofing at NDCL this summer, we anticipated challenges. We had them. Significant portions of rusted roof deck yielded building floods on too many occasions, including five times this summer. On a Saturday, without question, our Assistant Director of Facilities, Elmore James, our roofing consultant, Joe Slattery, and our custodians Savedra and Chris, rallied to address a flood so significant it went through two floors and 8 classrooms. Though these hallways and classrooms had already been cleaned and prepared for the fall semester, they did not give up. They leaned in with ready help on a weekend to get the work done. We ask our students “to live the truth in love.” In deed and in truth, our staff rallied all

It was so warm this summer, it reminded me of picture day in first grade. My parents had chosen a lovely brown wool sweater over an oxford cloth button down shirt. I loved recess and it was so warm.

Dominic DiMarco sums up his newest venture in one simple phrase: An opportunity to serve. The 1969 graduate of Cathedral Latin School and Kent State University alumnus has held wideranging leadership positions over the last 40+ years.

“It’s about caring for each other, caring for our fellow human beings,” he says. “I spent many years working with people overseas with little education and training, but they wanted to be part of the Ford Motor Company family. The education is important, but life skills and how we treat one another is so important for schools to teach and foster. I learned that at Latin. I use that in my career, and now I look forward to serving the Board of Notre Dame Schools.”

A LIONS welcome to Dominic DiMarco 1969 Cathedral Latin graduate joins Notre Dame Schools Board of Directors 4 NOTRE DAME SCHOOLS

DiMarco and his wife Erin live near Detroit, Michigan. He made his mark at Ford Motor Company serving in a number of international and leadership roles, largely in South America and Asia. After leaving Ford, he steered his career towards education. From 2008 to 2021, DiMarco was in multiple leadership positions at the Cranbrook Educational Community in Michigan, the last 9 years as its President. In his career at Ford and at Cranbrook, he leaned on his Catholic school foundation many times.

“Notre Dame Schools is such an outstanding institution, and one whose core values are consistent with my own,” DiMarco says. “The school’s focus on loving, educating, and respecting one another is very familiar to me, and the mission living the truth in love is what Cathedral Latin stood for. It’s a true honor for me to serve the school in this capacity.”

The proceeds from khrustyky and pierogi sales, plus added contributions from members of the NDCL community totaled over $22,000 that was directed to the Ukranian Eparchy of Parma who will disburse the funds to churches in Ukraine and Poland. gets “rolling”

After the all-school Mass celebrating the Feast of the Annunciation, students experienced Ukranian music throughout the day and joined in prayer and spirit for the people of Ukraine.

This past spring, NDCL found a creative way to help relief efforts for our friends suffering in Ukraine. Students, faculty members, and volunteers made and sold khrustyky, a sweet dough treat also known as angel wings, over the course of several days in March. In addition, over 400 dozen pierogi orders were sourced from the local Ukranian community and members of the NDCL community gave above and beyond the cost as a donation to support the efforts.

Luchowski credits much of her success both in college and professionally to her time at NDA.

8 NOTRE DAME SCHOOLS

Her work as Executive Director for the conference ultimately is about delivering championship experiences for the member colleges and universities and their student-athletes. With a lean staff and responsibilities including operational, educational, and strategic objectives, she sees her role as telling the story of the “Istudent-athletes.believethatathletics really compliments the academics in a college setting,” she says. “What we deliver for the 5,000+ student-athletes is part of the whole experience and not just a means to an end. Big difference from the ‘big business’ that is Division I. However, we do benefit from that financial success since our budget is a percentage of the NCAA overall. I consider our conference and Division status to be a family. You want to beat your ‘brother and sister’ schools when you are up against them, but when someone else comes in and tries to take them down, you’re all in.”

Keri (Alexander `88) Luchowski fell in love with sports at a young age. It turned into a career as Executive Director of the NCAA’s Division III North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). Now in her 24th year at the conference, Luchowski started out in Cleveland’s soccer industry.

“There are so many opportunities if you have a strong work ethic and as long as you remain curious. Whether it is communication, sales, legal, compliance, or athletic training, there are multiple doors that you can walk through and be part of college athletics. It’s a big family, and there’s no wrong way of doing it.”

“I was so well-prepared for college and that’s thanks to the teachers and Sisters at Notre Dame Academy. They pushed me to do more than I thought I could do myself. Mrs. Vinka Hartman and Miss Rhonda Rickelman were especially important to me. They saw my potential and believed in me.”

Luchowski has advice for the young men and women seeking a career in college athletics: There is a place for you.

"While I love swimming & diving while at NDA, I also played soccer and loved it. I played in college at Wheeling Jesuit, and then my first job was interning with the Cleveland Crunch, which was at that time the highest level of professional soccer in the country. There was a communications job with the NCAC, I went for it and got it. I figured I’d be there for three years. Now, 24 years later, I am privileged to serve thousands of studentathletes as the Executive Director.”

The Bowdens have been married for 13 years and knew that when they were blessed with children, a Catholic school is where they would send them. Adelynn is entering the 5th grade and Kayla is entering 2nd grade at NDES this fall. “I went to Catholic and public schools growing up,” Jason says. “We wanted our girls to be in an environment like NDES all along. The moral values that the school demonstrates supports what Rachel and I are teaching them at home. The community is wonderful. We’ve met what I am sure are going to be lifetime friends here in the NDES community.”

“The kids learn so much (from the Sisters) and love seeing them in the hallways, outside, and at Mass,” Rachel says. “It really is a family. The teachers, the parents, the Sisters, and the students. It’s everything, we just love it!”

Where are you now? George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School. I just completed two summer courses in Italy taught by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch and Professor Jaffer. An unbelievable experience! Studying what? Second year law student with a focus on antitrust law. I graduate in 2024.

Morgan Uveges `17

Looking back, how did NDCL prepare you for college? Having awesome teachers that you can connect with was important for me. In college, fostering strong relationships with your professors can open up so many opportunities. You get good advice from people that have been through similar experiences. The academic rigor that NDCL instilled in me prepared me for the college courses at Miami and now in Law School. What impact has your family made for your success? I tell my mom and dad all the time that I’d be nowhere without their support. I have a great family to come home to. They challenge me to go for the top. After graduation: I am applying for a federal clerkship. Whether it is a District Court or the Circuit Court. We’ll see what happens!

SEASONS SUMMER 2022 21

Tom Fogarty `17

What life lessons did NDCL teach you? You can never work too hard. Everything I have achieved I worked for. Going that extra mile will pay off. Your advice to NDES and NDCL students today? Learn to manage your time. Go that extra step and the rewards will come.

Where are you now? Duke University School of Law Studying what? Starting my second year of law school Looking back, how did NDCL prepare you for college? NDCL piqued my intellectual curiosity and also taught me discipline. Nobody is standing over your shoulder making sure you are getting your work done, so learning that self-discipline and time management was important. What impact has your family made for your success? My mother’s unwavering support and a strong work ethic were instilled in me from a young age. My father taught me to be curious. He’s a lawyer and I could always see myself in those shoes. What life lessons did NDCL teach you? Find your goal as early as you can and start working towards it. I knew that I wanted to be an attorney at an early age, so through Mock Trial and my classes it taught me to work towards something. Your advice to NDES and NDCL students today? Try new things and be yourself. For example, I participated in NDCL’s theater program as it was a chance to perform in front of my peers and overcome any stagefright.

What life lessons did NDCL teach you? You don’t have to fit into a box. Explore your interests. In high school I participated in so many clubs and activities, and that was easy to step into in college. Being busy also teaches you time management. The network of people you’ll meet, both personal and professional, comes easily with all the activities you engage in. Your advice to NDES and NDCL students today? Take advantage of the time you have in school right now to explore different interests—classes, clubs, even sports. If you spend the right amount of time on something, continuing to get better each time, you’ll achieve your goals.

Where are you now? University of Cincinnati Studying what? I am working on my biomedical engineering degree and MBA at the same time. Looking back, how did NDCL prepare you for college? I took engineering principles and biomedical studies at NDCL and I looked forward to these classes each day! In considering a major, I wanted to blend the best of both these classes, so I chose biomedical engineering. My introduction to CAD (computer-aided de sign) at NDCL made it so much easier adapting to it in college. What impact has your family made for your success? My family is always supportive of my decisions and encourage me to try different things.

Making your mark can also build a legacy that recognizes the value of Catholic education through a gift in your will to NDCL. This type of gift costs nothing today and ensures that future generations of leaders will transform the world, as Jesus did, by living the truth in love. Visit FreeWill.com/NDSchools or scan this QR code to get started. Contact Keven Krajnak ’98 to confirm your intention to leave a legacy gift to NDCL in your will.
