from thepublishers’son Hello. My name is Adam Thomas Stafford and I am the newest Nelson County Life. My birthday is September 28 which means I am a level-headed Libra. I was born on my due date which is a rare thing for us newborns. I pride myself on being punctual. I expect my parents to be the same. When I’m hungry, I need to be fed now. When my diaper is dirty and I cry, I need it to be changed now. My first diaper change happened in the hospital as my parents were sleeping. I woke mommy up and when daddy asked what that noise was, she sarcastically described it as an Adam Bomb. Get it? My mom can thank me for her sense of humor. Like the time the doctor was checking her belly to make sure I was head down. I flexed my rear end to make it feel hard and bony like my head. The nice doctor lady thought I was breach and so they had to take pictures of me. The pictures showed that I was head down! I am so funny. You see that tree in the picture? It’s an apple tree I got for my birthday. It is my Adam’s Apple tree! My parents often ask what I must be thinking when they are holding me and I begin to smile. Am I really smiling or am I working on something? Chances are, I am working on something. Someone needs to tell my mommy

that it is too early for her to be singing the alphabet song to me. Like I’m going to remember that now. I do know that H is for Hair and I have lots of it on my Head. Daddy told me one night that those mean, loud words mommy was saying on my birthday were not directed at anyone in particular. Furthermore, she promised never to say those words again. Even though I was still in the womb, I do remember what she said. But, since I am a gentleman, I’ll have to leave out some letters. H. F. S! M. F! Now I know my ABC’s, won’t you come and play with me? – Adam Thomas Stafford (Mom’s version of events is on pg. 47)

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz kpfaltz@mbc.edu www.basicnecessities.com Wine and Tourism It’s a sign of the time that tourists today now “do” the châteaux and vineyards of Bordeaux and Burgundy or the route des vins in the Loire and Alsace just as they would take a boat ride down the Seine. More than ever, learning about wine and vineyards have become part of the tourist industry. In our own Virginia we see a new vineyard popping up every month—or so it seems. As wine is taken more and more seriously, wine standards are improving greatly. In Nelson County we have local wine of exceptional quality and the rest of Virginia is not far behind (!) Visiting Provence and the French Riviera in September, I decided to enjoy the role of American tourist and explore the shifting perception of wine as the national beverage undergoes global market changes and France is forced to compete with other wine-producing countries. Wine tourism is not new. Even before the Revolution, Bordeaux’s reputation for wine led travelers to venture out of the city to the Graves estate of Haut-Brion. These early tourists had a general interest in wine-growing procedures, but a few went further. Thomas

Jefferson’s passion for wine was such that in 1787 he used a visit to take the waters at Aix as an excuse to travel through a number of wine regions: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Provence and northern Italy, and the following year he extended his explorations to include the Rhine Valley and Champagne, keeping travel diaries which are now invaluable documents for wine historians. Although tourist interest in wine goes back many years, it was a long time before the tourist and wine industries got together to satisfy this interest by setting up the Routes des Vins. Alsace became the first region in 1951 to acquire a ‘wine trail’ which followed a medieval track between Marlenheim and Thann. This was copied by other appellations and more recently vineyard owners have started opening their cellars to visitors, even setting up miniature wine museums. My Route de Vin through Provence and along the fabled Côte d’Azur was less structured and a little random with exclamations of, “Oh, I remember this place! Quick, let’s turn here.” Sometimes the folks would remember me, but more often not, as the old guard gave way to sons and daughters. To be continued.

BACKBONE’S FINISHING TOUCHES A trim carpenter puts the finishing touches on the copper topped bar at Devils Backbone Brewery, set to open mid November.

AMBROSIA

BAKERY & DELI

The wait will soon be over for Nelson County’s second brew house. Devils Backbone Brewery is set to open this month in Beech Grove. “It’s been a dream for almost a decade to [build this brewery]. Not so much for me, but for the community, for Nelson” said owner Steve Crandall, who said he is very much working with Taylor Smack, one of the owners of Nelson’s other brewery, Blue Mountain.

Now Open – Wednesday thru Sunday 8:00am – 6:00pm Closed Monday & Tuesday 434-361-9661

“There’s a very unique brotherhood of brewers and the brewing community,” said Crandall. “And Taylor was certainly the pioneer in coming into Nelson County and starting his brewery before anyone else. He had the vision.”

Crandall said he’s had the vision for a while, but it’s finally all starting to come together. When the brewery and restaurant opens its doors in mid-November, Crandall expects there to be something for everyone. “Basically the restaurant has three separate souls to it,” he started to explain. “Maybe four souls, really. Maybe five.”

Located between the Blue Ridge Pig & Valleymont Grocery

He explained each area of the business with just as much dedication as the one before. First the brew house featuring house-made beer, non-alcoholic root beer and brews made by other Virginia breweries. Next the bar area that will serve wine, liquor, beer and “bar-style” food and the dining room that will serve everything from appetizers to main courses. He finished with the outdoor Germanic-style beer garden, complete with fireplace and covered dining area. “We have a lot of different personalities,” said Crandall of his soon-to-be-complete Devils Backbone Brewery. The restaurant will serve one menu all day long every day – it’ll be open seven days a week – and it will be non-smoking with an outdoor covered area for smokers. The bar will showcase three flat screen TVs. “And, of course, we’ll be piping music through the whole place,” Crandall said. NCL

HENRI WEEMS

“I remember my mother getting a phone call and when she got off the phone, she said something like, ‘Something’s happened to your father. He’s missing.’” – Robert C. Bryson (pictured above) continued from page 12 That’s the memory 88-year-old retired Marine Colonel, Robert L. Bryson has of his military T-28 that crashed into the side of Humpback Rocks just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway around sunset May 1, 1964. We first told you about the mystery surrounding the military airplane crash in our February 2008 issue. Then in our May issue, we introduced Henri Weems of Rodes Farm who, through his research, solved the mystery. Henri Weems verified the crash, found out who the pilots were, and the circumstances surrounding the 1964 wreckage. Henri Weems thought that would be the end of it. So did we. Last month Henri Weems got an e-mail from the son and daughter-in-law of Colonel Bryson. He wanted to see the place where his dad’s plane had gone down 44 years earlier. “I was around 10 or 11 years old when it happened,” said Robert C. Bryson. Today he is 56, working at The State Department in Washington, D.C. He knew he had to see the wreckage. Reenter, Henri Weems. “I was a little reluctant to turn them lose in the woods without any guides, because you are going down off the [Appalachian Trail] without any markers or anything,” Henri said. So one weekend in October, Henri and his hiking buddy Tom Marker, met Robert. and his wife Melissa, to make the journey back. The couple wanted to take pictures and share them with Colonel Bryson who now lives in Colorado. “I confess, the closer we got to the site, the more

14 NELSON COUNTY LIFE NOVEMBER 2008

mixed emotions we had,” said Robert. “On one hand enjoying the beautiful weather, the scenery and the conversation, but as we got closer to the crash, I don’t what else to say other than it was fairly eerie.” For 44 winters and 44 summers, the twisted metal and broken Plexiglas lay quietly up on Humpback waiting to tell it’s final story. In October 2008, it finally did. “Actually it was a very normal day. Col. Joe Warren, my companion that day, were flying to Tennessee where his mother lived. We have to go out and get proficiency hours now and then,” says Colonel Bryson of that day in 1964. “It was very dull and boring. Dusk was starting to come and we apparently lost oil pressure,” the Colonel continues. No oil pressure, means no engine. When you are 7000 to 8000 feet over a solid cloud deck above the mountains, your options suddenly become much fewer. “You can’t glide, you can’t do anything, you have to bail out,” the Colonel remembered. He and Col. Warren had to leave the airplane before it crashed into the mountains, but the plane, a trainer for the military, had no ejection seats. “We stand up in the seat and roll out and tuck your legs under you and hope you don’t get hit by the tail when it goes by,” said Col. Bryson who flew in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Luckily, they didn’t get hit by the plane’s tail. Instead he and Col. Warren dropped into the murky sea of clouds over the Rockfish Valley.

“You go into a thick fog and then all of the sudden the parachute hangs up on a pine tree. It lets loose and I fall out and hit a big rock,” said the Colonel. He had landed somewhere near Greenfield, not too far off from Afton. Col. Warren was nowhere to be found. Col. Bryson walked to a house, that belonged to a preacher who then walked another few miles with Col. Bryson to a find a telephone and call the Sheriff. “I remember my mother getting a phone call and when she got off the phone, she said something like, ‘Something’s happened to your father. He’s missing,’” Robert. remembered about that May day in 1964. Eventually his dad made it to Lovingston, hooked back up with Col. Warren who also parachuted to safety, and both men got in touch with friends and family to let everyone know they were okay. Neither man ever made it back to the crash site up on Humpback, and sadly, Col. Warren was killed about a year later in a crabbing expedition out of Beaufort, South Carolina. It was the day before his daughter was to marry. Both Col. Warren and his future son-in-law to be were caught in a swell and never seen again. So for an hour or two on a crisp autumn day, Col. Bryson’s son got to see, and remember, how his dad survived on what started out as a boring day in May of 1964. “You could almost see the fear on their face,” Weems recalled. “That if [he (Col. Bryson’s dad) hadn’t bailed out, there was no way he would have survived,” says Henri. NCL

Warren – along with his future son-in-law – went missing about a year after the crash in a crabbing expedition off the coast of South Carolina.

feeding the world 6 people at a time STORY by JENNIE TAL PHOTOGRAPHY by YVETTE STAFFORD

18 NELSON COUNTY LIFE NOVEMBER 2008

This past May, Judy Parrish was one of 25 people to package 11,000 meals in two hours. It wasn’t for a contest; she didn’t win a prize, but it wasn’t all work and no play, either. She was in North Carolina as part of a small church conference and she and her peers were packaging for a cause. “Basically we had a good time and we laughed,” said Parrish, rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Massies Mill. “And when we all walked away, we all felt like we had really done something worthwhile for the world.” While she was at the conference, Parrish learned about people who were hungrier than she could have ever imagined. “Because we’ve never experienced that [hunger],” she explained. A representative from Stop Hunger Now said in a presentation that Haitian women would mix meat fat and mud to fry in the sun, just to have something in their stomachs. Now back in Virginia, Parrish wanted to continue helping the organization feed the hungry. Her church and a handful of others in Nelson County have monthly ecumenical lunches that rotate from church to church. She decided that instead of inviting people to Grace Episcopal for a presentation, they would all get together to do something as a community for the world. “And [the group] is a predominantly older population,” she explained. “We can’t go out and build houses anymore, but we can do something like this.” So she raised the money and in October, the group got together for lunch and meal-making with Stop Hunger Now, an organization based in Raleigh, North Carolina, that recently opened a Lynchburg office. There were 36 people involved who came from Jonesboro Baptist, Grace Episcopal, Bethlehem Methodist, Rose Union Baptist, Cornerstone Baptist, Oak Hill and Trinity Episcopal churches. Their goal was to package enough food to feed 10,000 people in two hours. Each bag of dehydrated vegetables, chicken stock, rice and a tablet made from protein powder and soy costs $1.50 to package, but will feed six people who really need it – that’s only a quarter per meal. Once packaged, Stop Hunger Now ships the bags around the world for people to add water, heat up and eat. Currently, the organization feels there is enough aid in the United States, so the food they package will be shipped internationally. At the conference she attended, Parrish was actually able to try the food she packaged. “They cooked up a batch of this and we ate it,” she said, excited. “It’s really good!” Parrish hopes the event was not the last of its kind to be held in Nelson; she is trying to initiate a community effort to help feed the hungry. If you live in Lovingston, you probably know about Ray Bibb (above right). He’s the guy who carried a high school classmate injured in a hunting accident up the stairs at school. He’s the same Ray Bibb who delivers fire wood to an elderly couple whose only source of heat is a wood stove. These days, Ray needs your help. Diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma – a cancer affecting the immune system – Ray’s friends recently held a fundraiser for him at the Lovingston Opry to help pay for his treatment. Folks spent a picturesque fall Saturday enjoying the food and fun at the 3rd Annual Bethlehem United Methodist Church Fall Festival in Roseland. Visitors bid on silent auction items while the kids enjoyed a cakewalk and hay rides.

Fans of local artist Richard Crozier chatted with him and admired his newest landscapes of Nelson and Albemarle County. The works are on display at Spruce Creek Gallery.

According to Robin Clark, the commonwealth’s coordinator, there were 26 events in Virginia last year. “And we’re on schedule to have 34 events this year,” said Clark, who was a hunter before becoming disabled in a diving accident in 1972. “That’s something going on every other weekend and more.” He went 10 years without hunting, but now he hunts year round and wants to help others do the same. “When I saw this opportunity to get involved with this program, I wanted to do it to help other hunters,” said Clark. “So they wouldn’t have to recreate the wheel to get back out there today. Who is ...?

Identifying with home buyers and sellers.

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Long gone are the days in which you could stick a “for sale” sign in a yard and expect something to happen. In today’s real estate climate in which purchasers have many options, yet less available funds, and sellers are confronted with stiff competition and escalating days on market, having a carefully crafted plan of execution for buying and selling is essential. Statistical findings from the National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers (2007) may help market participants better understand one another and develop more customer centric approaches to buying and selling. Here are the report highlights: Characteristics of Home Buyers; The typical home buyer is 39 years old, while the typical repeat buyer is 46 years old; The median household income of buyers was $74,000. Among repeat buyers, the median income was $85,700; Nine percent of home buyers reported they were born outside the United States.

Characteristics of Homes Purchased; The typical home purchased was 1,810 square feet in size; Sixty-seven percent of first-time buyers purchased a detached single-family home, compared with 79 percent of repeat buyers; The median distance recent buyers moved was 13 miles; Buyers typically plan to stay in their home for 10 years. The Home Search Process; Nearly one-third of recent buyers reported that their first step in the home buying process was looking online for properties for sale; Eighty-four percent of home buyers used the Internet to search for homes; The typical home buyer searched for eight weeks and viewed 10 homes; Real estate agents were viewed as a very useful information source by 70 percent of buyers searching for a home. Home Buying and Real Estate Professionals; Seventy-nine percent of buyers purchased their home through a real estate agent or broker; Forty-three percent of buyers found their agent

through a referral from a friend or family member; The most important factor buyers consider when choosing an agent is their honesty and integrity; Nearly ninety percent of buyers would definitely or probably use or refer their real estate agent again. Financing the Home Purchase; Ninety-three percent of home buyers financed their recent home purchase; Nearly three-quarters of first time buyers rely on savings for their down payment; More than three-quarters of buyers felt their home purchase was at least as good an investment as stocks. Home Sellers and Their Selling Experience; Eighty-five percent of sellers were assisted by a real estate agent when selling their home; Over half of recent home sellers reported that they undertook home improvement or remodeling projects within three months prior to putting their home on the market; More than half of home sellers traded up to a larger home when

purchasing their next home. Home Selling and Real Estate Professionals; For one-quarter of sellers, their most important expectation is that the real estate agent will help sell the home within a specific timeframe; The most important factor when choosing a real estate professional, cited by 38 percent of recent sellers, is the reputation of the agent; Eighty-eight percent of sellers reported that their home was listed or advertised on the Internet. More than eight out of 10 sellers would definitely or probably use or refer the same agent again. Whether buying or selling, understanding the market participants may pave the way to a more successful real estate venture! BUSTERS STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by TOMMY STAFFORD

Who you gonna call? Goat Busters! Dial 434-531-6166, or visit vagoatbusters.com

28 NELSON COUNTY LIFE NOVEMBER 2008

I hopped in the pickup with Jace Goodling of Afton one October afternoon to take a look at his newest semi-occupation. He is now a self-proclaimed, goat buster. We headed north up Old Stoney Creek for about a mile then pulled off into what looked like an overgrown field. But just a few more steps, and it looked like the placed had been freshly mowed, everything was trimmed down. “It’s an earth-friendly way to go about something that’s traditionally done with highly toxic chemicals. This way you don’t just kill the weeds, but you get rid of them,” Jace Goodling said of his newest business that started several months ago. Goat Busters came to life after the building trade began a slow decline late last year. Jace, by trade, is a general building contractor. “This was just a good fit, building’s down, environmentalism is up.” According to Jace, his goats can clear, on the average, an average of an acre and a half every two weeks, depending on the type of growth in the field. “We just finished a job in Farmington Country Club and we thought it was going to take the goats three and a half weeks. They did it in two,” he said. After being called to a customer’s place, Jace loads up the goats and heads out. “People will come up and talk about the goats, and their first reaction is they’re headed to the market,” explained Jace. “I’m like, ‘Oh, no! They’re going to work.’ Then we’re heroes all of the sudden!”

To compensate for the building market slow down, general contractor Jace Goodling (above) started Goat Busters several months ago with business partner Scott Wilcox (below). The goats offer a greener – environmentally and financially speaking – alternative to traditional methods of clearing brush that involve the use of chemicals and heavy machinery.

Once on site, Jace and his business partner, Scott Wilcox, set up 42- inch high portable electric net fencing to keep the goats in. They also have two Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dogs that stay in with the goats to keep predators out. “They were born in a field with goats, they’ve never lived a minute of their lives outside of a field of goats,” said Jace of his dogs, laughing.. “They think they’re goats.,” Jace tells told me there aren’t many similarities between building a house and Goat Busters. “In goat busting, the clients seem a lot more appreciative all the way through.” Jace says this isn’t a new method of clearing overgrown land. In California it’s been done for years for fire control, eating the underbrush to control wildfires. While goats will eat just about anything, there are a few things they can’t and should not eat including “Mountain Laurel, Rhododendron, and Japanese Ewe.” But other than that Jace said they’ll eat most any weeds including jimson, pokeberry, and those most other animals won’t touch. As far as the cost, Jace said in his experience, using goats versus chemicals and herbicides actually comes out notably less expensive by the time you hire a farm truck to come out and spray a field. Alpha Phi Omega, the University of Virginia’s only coed service fraternity, has chosen the Rockfish Valley Community Center as its Fall 2008 service project. “Every Saturday we do a community service project in various place,” says Briana Evans, a Foreign Affairs and Anthropology major. “There are about 75 of us and almost everyone tries to go to a community service project. We do eight hours a semester. “ “They called and asked to meet because they were considering doing RVCC for their big Fall project,” says RVCC board member Margaret Claire. “ I didn’t really understand what they were going to do. What the project entailed. I was walking around the building saying ‘You can paint this’ or ‘We want to have picnic tables here.’ I just figured they would pick one thing, if we got chosen. I got called back and were told we had been chosen. Basically everything we had shown was chosen to be done, all of it.” On the job list: build a picnic shelter, picnic tables, a garden for the seniors, a courtyard, and a sidewalk for the Treasure Chest. Sweet!

As part of its 25th anniversary celebration, North Branch School buried an eco-friendly clay time capsule that included the day’s newspapers, and a topological map of Nelson County. The celebration coincides with plans to expand the building; sitework has just begun for the addition to the Aftonbased school.

As part of its annual Community Helper Day, students at Rockfish River Elementary School interacted with the folks who serve our community each day. Participants included members of law enforcement, local fire and rescue workers, and even an electric company lineman!

Hope for November folks. Because that is when Sal Mannino is hoping to open the doors of his second Vito’s restaurant in the heart of Nellysford. Right now the inside of the building that previously housed Grill 151 looks a little rough, but the extensive remodeling work has all ready made it a much lighter and more open feeling space. I got a tour; the dining rooms are still scattered with ladders and pallets of brick, and missing the paint, carpeting and tiles, but soon there will be the central pizza oven in it’s own tiled area, a wine cellar that will be able to hold up to six hundred bottles of wine toward the back, and a gas fireplace creating a cozy corner. Vito’s in Nellysford will feature much the same menu as the restaurant in Lovingston, but add more gourmet pizza toppings, offer Sicilian crust style pizza, and have at least 10 different kinds of beer on tap. “People are exploring different kinds of beer,” explains Sal, adding that he will try to serve locally brewed beer as well as other commercially available labels. Things that won’t change include the tiramisu, which tempts even Sal, who usually passes up sweet treats, to enjoy a helping with an espresso. Sal himself comes from a family of restaurateurs. His four siblings all own establishments, in areas ranging as wide as New Hampshire, and as far as their native Italy. That is where he got his start; at his sister and brother-in-law’s restaurant in Sicily. He started as a dishwasher, but didn’t remain in that position long, quickly moving to owning a pair of restaurants in Massachusetts. It was the need for a change of scenery that brought him to Virginia, ten years ago, where he became partners in Vito’s in Lovingston. Eventually, he bought the place, but never changed the name to Sal’s. Sal considers himself an artist when it comes to pizza making, and he likes working in the kitchen: he developed the panini that are so popular at Vito’s. Many of his workers from the first Vito’s will have a hand in getting the new one started, training new staff, and even sharing the kitchen Sal credits a good relationship with his employees in Lovingston for Vito’s success there, and hopes to continue that with the new place in Nellysford. Buona fortuna, Sal, and welcome to the neighborhood. NCL

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Saunders Landscapes, LLC

The Dawn Redwood There have been few times in my life where plants, in their natural form, have truly overwhelmed me. One such time occurred while working as an intern for Iseli Nursery Company in Oregon during the summer of 1989. Being a bachelor at the time, my weekends were filled with road trips to just about anywhere where we could make it to and from the destination in a weekend’s worth of driving – and for three 19 year-old young men, that pretty much opened the door for just about the entire continental US! One such trip took some other interns and me to northern California to see the great Redwoods. To say the least, it was awe inspiring. Although this tree is a distant cousin at best, it does remind me of those enormous trees in both leaf and bark. It is called the Dawn Redwood or Metasequoia glyptostroboides and truly deserves a place in any landscape – mountain, valley and anywhere between. The Dawn Redwood is a fast growing, conically shaped, deciduous tree (loses foliage in fall) that can reach 60 feet in height and around 25 feet in width. The foliage is feather or fernlike, about ½ - 1 inch long, very soft to the touch and has a bright, rich green hue. In fall it exhibits a nice, foxy red

snapshots

brown color before it drops all of its foliage to reveal a cinnamon colored, exfoliating bark – much like our native Eastern Red Cedar. The limbs of the Dawn Redwood come off of the plant at about a 30-45 degree angle creating a very unique conifer type appearance – formal yet incredibly soft in appearance and form due to its graceful foliage. Older specimens will have pendulous, dark brown cones on long stalks - globose or cylindrical in shape. Unfortunately, due to inbreeding from a few select specimens located in the US, many trees will not have fruit at all. Preferring a deep, moist, well drained soil, Dawn Redwood meets most typical urban and rural settings for soil types in the central Virginia area – even swampy areas where it sits in water 24-7. In regards to exposure, try to site this tree in as much sun as possible to ensure a deep dense canopy and a nice leaf color. However, if placed in more shade, the end result is just a looser plant with an almost lime-green hue to its foliage. Other cultural notes should include that it does not experience any real insect or disease issues and transplants quite easily in late fall and winter. In regards to landscaping, the sky is the limit with this specimen. It has shown to be quite pollution tolerant which opens it up for any kind of street,

driveway or city use in the USDA Hardiness Zone 4-8 settings. When trying to locate plants near or under the Dawn Redwood, try to pick specimens that have large bold leaves like hosta, hydrangea, rhododendron and cherry laurel. Unlike other plants that possess a similar growth habit, Dawn Redwood can be planted as a single specimen just about anywhere but in my opinion, should be located where it can be viewed up close as near a walk, window, patio or other outdoor room. When used en masse along a walk or path, this tree truly rewards all of those

who pass by with glimpses of large shafts of light landing on the ground in a diffused manner due to its feather-like foliage. This unique foliage coupled with its beautiful bark makes groupings of Dawn Redwoods a true conversation piece as well as a nice place to tie up a hammock and grab a book, a cold beverage and a little peace and quiet. In today’s Dow, gas and political mess, that cold beverage probably needs a hint of something that’s been fermenting a while … Until our next article, Happy Gardening!

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine

Dear Dr. Cole, I keep hearing that I should get a flu shot again this year. I got one last year. Why should I get another? This is a great question. We are entering flu shot season, and if it is done correctly it will make what follows – flu season – a little less severe. Influenza – “the flu” – is a respiratory infection that can make you very sick, and in some people can even be deadly. Symptoms of influenza include high fever, body aches, nasal congestion, extreme fatigue, dry cough and sore throat. Complications from influenza can be serious and include pneumonia, dehydration and worsening of chronic medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, asthma or diabetes. People with chronic medical conditions, very old and very young people are more likely to suffer complications and die from influenza. Your best protection against influenza is to be vaccinated. Because the influenza virus changes over time, the vaccine is different each year and yearly vaccination is necessary. The best time to be vaccinated is in the fall and early winter. It takes about 2 weeks for immunity to develop so don’t wait too long! According to the CDC, all children ages

Another reason why people trust Afton Family Medicine.

6 months through 18 years old, pregnant women and people 50 years and older should receive the flu shot. So should all health care workers, people with chronic medical conditions and residents of nursing homes and long term care facilities. Household contacts of people at high risk of complications, and household members of infants less than 6 months old should be vaccinated. The flu shot is also recommended for anyone wanting to decrease their risk of getting influenza. Certain people should not receive the influenza vaccine. These include people with a severe allergy to chicken eggs, a severe reaction to a prior influenza vaccine, a history of Guillian-Barre Syndrome after a flu shot and children less than 6 months old. Flu shot season is upon us. In order to stay healthy through the winter, and help others remain healthy, please go to your doctor’s office to get your flu shot. Yoga instructor Bindu Johnson wrote this month’s column: The Benefits of Regular Yoga Practice The best way to find out the benefits of yoga and meditation are to simply give a class a try. Even after one class, most people leave feeling more peaceful, connected and grounded. What does that mean? It means you will have a greater awareness of your body and your surroundings. It also means that yoga helps you to keep everything in your life in perspective. It has a calming effect on us. And it helps to reduce stress and lower blood pressure. Many people report sleeping more deeply and soundly on the night after their yoga classes. With a consistent practice, these benefits stay with you. On a physical level, yoga strengthens, tones and creates flexibility in the body. These practices also create increased awareness on many levels. Most people have forgotten how their body moves and yoga increases your awareness, balance, strength and flexibility. Mentally, concentrating on the physical poses and breath-

ing brings greater clarity and focus. Emotionally you will experience self love and acceptance and feel a sense of peace in your life. Because of my yoga and meditation practice, I am more productive, effective and fulfilled in all areas of my life. When first starting to take classes, it is important to seek out “gentle” or “beginner” classes so you do not get injured. In addition, inform the instructor if you have any ailments or injuries so the instructor can offer you a modified pose to try. I recommended taking 6-8 classes before deciding if it is for you or not to get a true taste of yoga! Agnes F. Tye River Elementary’s

community helpers

Thanks to students at Tye River Elementary School, a little girl from El Salvador has a toy in her hands. And other children like her now have a shot at an education. “Girls usually get married and start a family when they’re 1 , then they can look forward to getting up at the crack of dawn and gathering firewood and feeding the chickens, starting a fire to cook the morning breakfast, says Jonna Clarkson, a guidance counselor at Tye River. She and her husband work with

an indigenous missionary in a rural, isolated village in El Salvador. After showing a group of students pictures of her trip there, the kids told her they wanted to help. So they collected Christmas presents as other members of the community donated money to sponsor educational efforts. “I think it really helped them see that their education isn’t just something that grown-ups make them do, that it does impact their future, Jonna says.

As part of Tye River’s Community Day of Caring, visitors are shown a DVD slideshow of Jonna’s trip to El Salvador. The event, Jonna says, is part of an overall campaign to expose students to community helpers. In turn, students are learning hands-on what being a community helper is all about. Jonna is planning to travel back to El Salvador later this year and hopes to bring back more toys and donations for ongoing educational projects. For more information, you can reach her at Tye River Elementary by calling - 6 -8960. NCL

babylove Name: DOB: Time: Weight: Length: Place:

Adam Thomas Stafford September 28, 2008 11:49 am 8 lbs. 1oz. 19.5 in. Charlottesville, VA

I got the first tickle Sunday morning at 7:07 am. Was it the real thing? I wasn’t sure since most babies don’t arrive on their due date. But for Adam, the womb thing was getting old. I waited an hour to wake up Tommy. When I did, the tickles got stronger and I decided to take a shower. I never got a chance to dry my hair. Tommy called the hospital, Martha Jefferson, and began packing. Knowing I didn’t want to do this on ice chips alone, I threw some stuff together in a blender. You know it’s the real thing when you spill half a bag of frozen blueberries on the kitchen counter. We get in the Jeep and I immediately recline the seat. With one hand on the steering wheel, and the other on a stop watch, Tommy begins driving to Martha Jeff, timing each tickle along the way. Going into labor on the interstate wearing a seat buckle is not fun. Unbuckle. Buckle. Unbuckle. Buckle. Unbuckle ... Sorry, State Police. We get to the hospital and Lietzle Ford, the rock star nurse, greets us. She wants to know our birth plan. “No drugs,” I tell her. Lietzle (reminds me of The Sound of Music) checks me and I am dilated at 6 centimeters. “So can we go ahead and fill up the tub?” I ask. She does, and I jump in. I’m so cool, look at me. I’m laboring in the tub! There’s a reason why they install handle bars around these tubs. It’s so you don’t tear open your husband’s flesh. It didn’t take long for my mouth to unleash a shock and awe of vulgarity. Naked and cursing like sailor, this soon-to-be momma is one hot mess. “So when would I get a narcotic if I decide I want one?” I ask. Lietzle tells me 9 centimeters would be too late.

There’s a trick they teach you in Lorrie Bricker’s baby class at Martha Jeff. When you begin second-guessing your intentions of having an unmedicated birth, your spouse is supposed to say, “Let’s do two or three more contractions.” So, I endured a few more. After several more minutes of shock and awe, nurse Lietzle checks me again and tells me that I’m already at 9 centimeters. Conspiracy! In comes Dr. Michael Arnold which means we’re ready to push. For the record, pushing is great. It is more than great. It is fabulous. I love pushing. Pushing should be President! Tommy says I pushed for about 20 minutes. At 11:49 am, less than 5 hours since I felt the first tickle, out came our boy! They plopped him on my chest, Tommy cut the cord, and then they cleaned him up a bit before putting him back on me. 8 lbs 1 oz and 19.5 inches long. And all of you ladies told me he was going to be small. Ha! Giving birth is definitely an endurance event. My advice if you want an unmedicated birth: • Read Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin and Childbirth without Fear by Grantly Dick-Read. • Get rid of your stuffy desk chair and replace it with a $15 pilates ball. I am not kidding. • Get in the best shape of your life before you get pregnant, and once you’re there, don’t slack off for those 9 months. • Don’t put crap in your mouth. • Believe this: The female body is built for birth. Finally, remember that the “pain” of natural childbirth is not a curse. Rather, it is perhaps the most empowering thing a woman can ever experience. NCL

Here I am finally at home, with my mommy!

Nurse Laura Matheny is helping me with my first diaper. My other nurse, Lietzle, had to leave to celebrate her wedding anniversary. Congrats!

Mom, dad and me in the recovery room.

But Wait! There’s More! Me and dad like to take naps on the office couch while mom puts together this magazine. My swing is still a bit too big for me.
