Welcome to our Island Getaway

The march of time hasn’t moved quite as quickly in Topsail as it has in more metropolitan areas of North Carolina. Here, the tide and prevailing winds have guided the clock, the sun and sand have dictated our schedules and the catch of the day rings the evening dinner bell. Spooning the Eastern North Carolina coast between Cape Lookout and Cape Fear, is 26 miles of sparsely populated sandy beaches just waiting to take your breath away. The world of Topsail Island could easily be equated to stepping back in time – a time when life was just a little bit simpler, a little bit safer and far less stressful. There are no amusement parks. No multi-million dollar museums or zoos. Instead, you will find miles of beaches and small, friendly, family-run businesses reminiscent of the beach towns of the 1950s and 1960s. Visitors from more metropolitan areas will find it hard to believe that places like Topsail still exist. It’s hard to imagine that a sunbather might find a small, isolated sliver of beach to call their own for a day without another person in sight. But, on Topsail, it’s not only possible, it’s probable. Topsail Island (pronounced Topsul), was mostly uninhabited until the 1940s. There was no structured settlement, only fishing camps and the livestock belonging to mainland farmers who would run their charges across sandbars and shallows at low tide to 12

graze on the thick underbrush. Thanks go to the military for raising awareness of this little slice of heaven. During World War II, the US Army constructed Camp Davis in nearby Holly Ridge and used the remote island for artillery training. When the Army departed a few short years later, the US Navy picked up the torch, taking up residence on Topsail Island for secret Operation Bumblebee missile tests. While it was the Army that constructed the island’s first humble buildings, it was the Navy that gave the island its most prominent structures, many of which remain. The government was gone by 1948, but it left a few remnants behind, including a pontoon bridge to Surf City, basic roads, artesian wells and electricity. Topsail Island was finally ready for inhabitants. Surf City incorporated in 1949, Topsail Beach in 1963 and the residential community of North Topsail in 1990. Life today is much like it was when the first soldiers set foot on the island, quiet, peaceful and endlessly picturesque. Days are spent outdoors in Topsail, boating, fishing, sunbathing and enjoying a variety of water sports. Even after the sun goes down, you’ll find most visitors out on their porch, listening to the waves crash against the shore with nothing to interrupt their rhythm except the sound of their own voice. The Beach The three beachfront communities of Topsail Island each has its own character, although all embrace a true laid back coastal environment.

NORTH tOPSAIL bEACH Located at the northern tip of Topsail Island, North Topsail Beach is a quiet residential community with a handful of resorts dotting the coastline. It’s the most secluded of the island’s small towns, providing families with miles of sandy beaches, colorful sunsets and the solitude some prefer. Kayaks and canoes provide a great view of the picturesque sound, a haven for a variety of birds. North Topsail has its own bridge to the mainland, making access to nearby towns easy. For more information, visit www.ntbnc.org.

If the island of Topsail had a downtown center, Surf City would fill that role. Divided between Pender and Onslow counties, the town has one leg on the mainland and another on the island, bridging the gap and welcoming guests to this island paradise. It is home to one of the state’s remaining operational swing bridges, a fitting access to Topsail Island, which opens on the hour to allow boat traffic to pass. It’s also a great spot for scenic views of the sound below. With plans to replace the bridge in coming years, there’s no doubt more people than ever will be jumping out of their cars for a final shot of the historic structure in action. Besides the addition of private homes and small business, little has changed in Topsail Beach since roads were first constructed by the military in the 1940s. High-rise development is not allowed at this southern most reach of the island and conservation is encouraged, leaving miles of natural, untouched seashore and panoramic views from just about every vantage point. The smallest of the three towns on the island, less than 600 people call Topsail Beach home year-round, however, visitors continue to grow by the year. With pristine beaches and a nostalgic charm, it’s easy to see what brings families back year after year. To learn more about Topsail Beach, visit www.topsailbeach.org. www.nccoast.com

The Mainland

HAmpstead

A haven for golfers, with four courses to choose from, Hampstead, north of Wilmington and just inland from Topsail Beach, continues to grow with its ideal best-of-both-worlds location. Close to the shopping, dining and culture the big city can provide, yet close to Topsail Island, Hampstead is a favorite for young families and retirees. Surely embellished over time, it is said that President George Washington once spent a night in the region, eager to dine on wild mullet from Topsail Sound. Mullet, however, had not begun to run and the feast was swapped for ham, hence Hampstead. For more information visit topsailchamber.org.

holly Ridge This quiet residential community at the intersection of Hwys 17 and 50 touts the motto “The Gateway to Topsail Island.” And, while that statement is certainly true, Holly Ridge’s role in bringing people to the island getaway runs far deeper than its convenient location on the way into town. On Dec. 10, 1940, the contract was signed to build Camp Davis here. Constructed in five short months, the Army’s presence brought the population from about 30 area residents to more than 110,000. To learn more, visit www.townofhollyridge.net.

Snead’s Ferry Tucked into the woods on the mainland, this small Onslow County community is best known throughout the state for one thing – its shrimp. Each August it celebrates its fishing industry and the species that has put it on the map with the Sneads Ferry’s Shrimp Festival, bringing visitors from around the state eager for a taste of the wild shrimp that is abundant in the region. The state’s most recent statistics note that Sneads Ferry is responsible for about 385 tons of shrimp a year, making it the county’s largest seafood producer and giving this community of less than 3,000 residents a lot to celebrate. To learn more, visit sneadsferrynorthcarolina.com. 16

entertaining, enriching and exciting for all participants, putting sea turtles, alligators, snakes and other critters at the public’s fingertips – literally. The goal, said Gould, is to teach people about species that are native to North Carolina and teach them how they can help protect them for generations to come. Topics include Dinosaur Discovery, Jammin’ Jellies, Wild Wetlands, Changing Oceans, Turtle Time and Aquarium Olympics. It is not necessary for participants to register in advance, walk-ins are always welcome. While there is no set cost for the program, donations are graciously accepted to help support the program.

Autumn on the Island

Seafood Celebration

Sneads Ferry, a quaint seafood village, is most famous for its main catch, shrimp, and each year it brings in more than 385 tons of this popular crustacean. Each year, in an effort to celebrate and honor local fishermen and the seafood industry, the Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival attracts shrimp and seafood lovers from all over North Carolina and beyond. Hosted by the Sneads Ferry Community Center, the festival is a two-day affair, Aug. 13-14. Spot on Fun

Hit the streets of Hampstead for one of the largest festivals that celebrates this town’s most abundant catch, the spot. Hampstead is host to the NC Spot Festival each September offering a two-day event filled with fun, food and entertainment.

There isn’t a better way to end the summer season and enter the crisp, cool months of fall than Autumn with Topsail, held Oct. 15-16. It is hosted each year on the third weekend in October by the Historical Society of Topsail Island. All proceeds go directly to maintaining the Missile Assembly Building and the Missiles and More Museum. The event started in 1988 and continues to offer excellent local crafts, carnival rides, food, a wine and beer garden and other fun. The festival features a juried artists’ court with several regional artists displaying and selling artwork. The 2012 entertainment lineup will feature local favorites, the Band of Oz and the Coastline Band. Things get started on both Saturday and Sunday with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Kiwanis. But it’s the juried art show that is always sure to bring in the visitors. Local and regional artists display and sell their work on-site amidst the food vendors, games, children’s art activities, rides and live entertainment. One-day admission is $5 for adults, $8 for both days. Children 11 and under and active duty military are free. Details: autumnwithtopsail.com.

New Year’s Dip

Each New Year’s Day, the Dolphin Dip Foundation brings people together for a fun opportunity to take the challenge and hit the cool ocean waters for a refreshing way to embrace a new start. The water is chilly, but it doesn’t seem to stop crowds in Surf City from taking a brave immersion in the frigid ocean waters of the Atlantic during the annual Dolphin Dip. The annual Dip will be held at 11am on Jan. 1 at the Roland Avenue Beach Access in Surf City. The swim begins at noon. Participants are invited to wear creative costumes since the event includes an award ceremony rewarding those for being the best dressed. Mixing History & Fun Separated from the mainland until the 1940s and reachable only by those few locals who knew how to hop, skip and jump their way across the marsh during low tide, it’s easy to think there is little history on Topsail Island. But nothing could be farther from the truth. Almost as abundant as its seafood, the history of Topsail Island is rich and flavorful. From pirates to missile launch tests, this remote island has been home to many in the last 50 years, some more colorful than others. One place, however, has information on them all – the Missiles and More Museum in Topsail Beach, home to the Historical Society of Topsail. It was the US Army who first came to the beach. In less than six months during World War II, the government constructed Camp Davis at Holly Ridge on the mainland, bringing the modest community with a population of less than 50 to a max of 110,000 in just a few short years. Troops could conduct artillery training under the shroud of safety provided by the barren island. But the growth, and the Army’s presence, was short lived. By 20

www.nccoast.com

the end of the war, much of the base was dismantled and the troops were transferred. But the island’s potential was noted and it didn’t take long until the US Navy had the ideal use for the site. Operation Bumblebee, a missile test project coordinated with the John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, sealed Topsail’s name in the history books. Some 200 missiles were launched during the program, some of which are on display at the Missiles and More Museum. The Assembly Building, which houses the museum, was exactly what its name says – the place where the missiles were constructed. Other structures were built on the island as well, including roads, a pontoon bridge and observation towers. The control tower is located between the Assembly Building and the launch pad, now the patio for the Jolly Roger Motel. Searching for the remaining towers, four of which have been incorporated into home construction, can be a fun game for the family and a great way to get the kids interested in history.

Now protected by the Historical Society of Topsail, the Missiles and More Museum is on the National Register of Historic Places and has a great collection of artifacts and photos left from the Navy’s beach vacation. The site is open from 2-5pm, Monday through Saturday, May through September, with reduced shoulder season hours. Admission is free. For additional details, call 910328-8663 or visit missilesandmoremuseum.org. If the museum only whets your appetite for military history, a short drive south will take you right to the deck of the Battleship North Carolina, now a museum in its own right. Moored across the Cape Fear River from downtown Wilmington, the ship allows visitors to have a true feel for what seaman experienced aboard the ship. From the barber shop and dining hall to sleeping quarters and medical clinic, guests are allowed to mosey through the ship at their own pace, staying as long or as little as they like. Commissioned on April 9, 1941, the battleship was the first of 10 to join the US fleet during World War II. At just over 728 feet in length, the ship was armed with nine 16-inch 5 caliber guns in three turret and 20 5-inch 8 caliber guns in 10 twin mounts. Through her career, the vessel was involved in nine shore bombardments and destroyed at least 2 enemy aircraft. She was retired in 1947, however, when word spread through the state in 1958 that the battleship would be scrapped, a successful bid by the state’s residents helped save the ship and bring her to her home state.

The site was dedicated on April 29, 1962 as the state’s official memorial to World War II. Because of its memorial status, the ship is open for guests 365 days a year, however, hours vary depending on the season. Tickets are $14 for adults, $10 for seniors and military, $6 for children 6-11. In addition to self-guided tours, special events and behind-the-scenes tours are held throughout the year. The Azalea Coast

When deciding what to do with yourself during your island vacation, don’t discount nearby Wilmington for a daytrip. With an array of first-class museums and attractions, this break from lounging by the ocean may be exactly what you need. If you go, make sure you visit the Battleship North Carolina, Bellamy Mansion Museum, Cameron Art Museum, Children’s Museum of Wilmington and Fort Fisher.

Karen Beasley Turtle Hospital

After a grand opening in 2014, the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center welcomes guests through the summer at its new home, 302 Tortuga Lane in Surf City. Tours cost $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and active duty military and $3 for children 13 and under. Visitors can access the gift shop, talk with volunteers, and look through the windows for free. Since its opening, the hospital has successfully rescued, rehabilitated and released more than 400 turtles, excluding any hatchlings that made their way through over the years. The hospital also runs the Topsail Turtle Project, a group of volunteers that walk the beaches during nesting season identifying turtle nests. To learn more about the facility, visit www.seaturtlehopsital.org.

Poplar Grove Plantation

Spend a morning or afternoon exploring on the oldest surviving peanut plantations in the state. Poplar Grove Plantation was in the Foy family for six generations, from 1795 to 1971. The homestead is preserved to illustrate the life of a successful farming family, along with the outbuildings and crafts typical of a 19th century working community. Aside from the Manor House, the plantation covers more than 15 acres that are maintained by the NC Coastal Land Trust. For a full schedule of events, visit poplargrove.org. 22

Missiles and More Museum

The Historical Society of Topsail supports the Missiles and More Museum, celebrating the extensive military history of the area. The building, constructed in 1946, was used by the government to assemble missiles for a secret missile operation being conducted on Topsail Island. These citizens began to examine ways to preserve the building and after several years of research, feasibility studies and meetings with state and local representatives, the building was purchased. The Assembly Building became the ideal place to house the Missiles and More Museum. For hours, or additional information, visit missilesandmoremuseum.org.

Moores Creek National Battlefield

Moores Creek is the site of the battle that ended British rule in the colony. On Feb. 27, 1776, Loyalists charged across a partially dismantled Moores Creek Bridge, only to be met by nearly 1,000 North Carolina patriots with cannons and muskets poised to fire. Take a trip to Currie to take a walking trail documenting the victory. The park also has a visitor’s center with exhibits and audiovisual programs, a Colonial forest trail and a picnic area. Learn more about the park by visiting nps.gov/mocr.

Topsail Island Skating Rink

For a blast from the past, visit the Topsail Island Skating Rink. The rink is sure to illicit some feelings of nostalgia since not much has changed since it opened in 1964. The rink is owned by the formidable Doris Jenkins. Her husband built the post office with the upstairs skating rink in 1963. Jenkins worked in the post office during the day and at the skating rink at night. The rink is located at 714 S. Anderson Blvd., Topsail Beach. For hours and information, call 910-328-2381. TC

Jazz Drawing more and more visitors each year, the Ocean City Jazz Festival brings the sounds of cool jazz to blend the waterfront breeze each summer in historic Ocean City, part of North Topsail Beach. Under the shade of a tent, artists at the top of their art will perform on the evenings of July 2-3. Started in 2009, the festival was conceived by the community’s citizens’ council who were seeking a summertime family celebration to mark the 60th anniversary of the Ocean City. Ocean City, located 3 miles north of Surf City, was developed by the efforts of Edgar Yow, a white attorney, and Dr. Samuel Gray, a black physician, both of Wilmington. Yow owned the 1-mile stretch of beach on Topsail Island and approached Dr. Gray with the idea of creating an African American beach community where residents could own a beachfront home. Dr. Gray turned to Bertram, Wade, Louise and Robert Chestnut, siblings who purchased the first tracts of land in what was to become Ocean City. The first homes were built in 1949, followed by a motel, chapel and camp dormitory. Ocean City became the first North Carolina coastal community in which African Americans could purchase land, 15 years before the Civil Rights Act. To celebrate the rich history of Ocean City, the council approached the community about holding a jazz festival, and the idea was welcomed with overwhelming positive response. “We were looking for an event that would bring some focus to the Ocean City community as well as the Topsail Island community,” Kenneth Chestnut, president of the 28

Gerald Veasley

on the Shore Ocean City Beach Citizens Council said of the event’s beginning. “We looked at other festivals in the area and there were no jazz festivals. It has grown each year and keeps getting bigger and better. It really brings a lot of people to Ocean City and Topsail Island. It has a positive impact on the area and certainly on the Ocean City community.” The Ocean City Jazz Festival continues to be a one of a kind event for Topsail Island event. The event celebrates jazz legends and up and coming jazz greats. The festival is held annually on July 4th weekend at 2649 Island Drive and offers an eclectic schedule of performers. This year’s lineup includes bassist and composer John Brown, a native of Fayetteville; drummer Herlin Riley of New Orleans; Detroit’s Althea Rene; Tia Fuller, who recently toured with Beyonce; Marcus Anderson, a saxophonist from South Carolina; Philadelphia’s Gerald Veasley; and soul singer Ashleigh Smith, who recently shared the stage with the Manhattan Transfer and Jon Hendricks at the Kennedy Center. One-day admission is $35 and two-day admission is $60 in advance. Tickets are slightly higher at the gate. The event includes food trucks and a merchandise market that features a variety of food, beverages and souvenirs. No picnic baskets or coolers are allowed. The jazz festival features signature wines provided by Duplin Winery and a silent auction. Visit the community center to bid on auction items prior to the event. All proceeds benefit the Wade H. Chestnut Memorial Chapel. For more information, visit oceancityjazzfest.com. TC

Golfing the Treasure Coast

Visitors looking to trade their flip flops and fishing poles for a chance to practice their golf swing while on vacation certainly have no shortage of options when it comes to the Treasure Coast. With lush landscapes and picturesque water views around every bend, the backdrop couldn’t be more relaxing. Spring and fall are considered two of the favorite times for golfing in the area with sunny days and cooler temps, but golfing is truly a year-round attraction in Eastern North Carolina as our terrific climate allows for play almost any time. Most courses feature clubhouses, resident pros, wellequipped pro shops and are open to the public at great rates. All you have to do is call for a tee time. And if you’re a resident and a golfer, ask about the courses’ benefit tournaments held throughout the year. The community is always looking for teams and individuals for tournament play to benefit local organizations. From professional instruction and putting greens to pools and on-site dining options, the variety of country clubs and golf courses in the Topsail area have lots to offer, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned golfer. Summer Plunder Days The Topsail area is full of talented artisans eager to share their talents with visitors. And they have a chance to do that this summer as Summer Plunder Days in Topsail Beach. The brainchild of Topsail Beach resident Dottie Netherton, who developed the craft market as a part of the town’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2013, however, its popularity demanded that the summer market be continued. Netherton imagined a market that features just featuring local crafts. A farmer’s market it is not. In fact, shoppers won’t find any produce at all. The focus is solely on the talents, arts and crafts of local residents. Netherton built on the Topsail pirate history, conceiving the tag “Plunder Days” and invites visitors to “Come

FREE 1/4 lb of Fudge

Pillage in the Village.” There is even a treasure chest, where children can collect a piece of eight to be exchanged for a pirate pencil at the Missiles and More Museum. Held at 802 S. Dropping a line Island Fishing

Topsail offers several options when it comes to dropping a line. From piers and surfside to trolling on a charter boat, few things are better than casting a line on Topsail Island’s beautiful coastline. Anglers rave about the spring sea mullet and the Spanish mackerel, drum, flounder, cobia and spots as the water begins to warm. Pier fishing was born with the construction of the Surf City Ocean Pier in 1948, now an icon in the community. The love of the sport quickly caught on, leading to the construction of two additional ocean piers and more recently, soundside pier in Surf City. Fishermen who prefer a little solitude and peace, can easily find their place in the sand for a little surf fishing, by far, one of the most relaxing ways to participate. It’s not uncommon to find an angler resting back in a beach chair, his rod tucked into the sand by his feet as he patiently waits for a nibble. The payoff for surf fishing isn’t bad either, with catches often including flounder, trout, black drum, spot and pompano. Those feeling a little more adventurous have their choice of more than 25 charter boat captains in the immediate area, with fishing trips that range from inshore jaunts calm enough for the kids to high seas adventures in the Gulf Stream. Most captains can cater a trip to your wants and needs, however, how good of a day you have is always up to the fish. Visit www.topsailchar-

terfishing.com for a list of charters available in the area.

Rules & Regs

While fishing on any of Topsail’s three ocean fishing piers, anglers are not required to purchase a NC Fishing License. The piers carry blanket licensing to cover all fishing on the premises. A license is required, however, for the Surf City Soundside Pier. All other fishermen over age 16 must purchase a permit from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. Those interested can pay with a credit card online at ncwildlife.org or by calling 1-888-248-6834. To learn more, visit www.ncwildlife.org. TC
