The oldest of the five towns that dot the beautiful shores of Bogue Banks – it turns 80 in 2017. With ample opportunities for surfing and fishing, Atlantic Beach is home to one of the two remaining fishing piers on the island and provides the perfect opportunity to prop your feet up and drop a line. The town has a collection of shopping and dining options and is convenient to area attractions. EMERALD ISLE With an almost perfect blend of modern amenities and old-fashioned beach town values, Emerald Isle is a favorite vacation spot. Located at the far western end of Bogue Banks, the town’s warm hospitality has made this community a summertime home for many families. Bogue Banks remained largely uninhabited until the 1950s when it was purchased by a group of developers. Viewing the lush green maritime forest from a plane, a consultant suggested the name “Emerald Isle.” Attractions include a water slide, miniature golf, movies, fishing, bike paths that span the town, and, of course, swimming, sunning, sandcastle building and a nice assortment of shopping and dining. Indian Beach/Salter Path These bedroom communities in the middle of Bogue Banks swell each summer with second home owners and vacationers searching for a perfect stretch of beach to call home for a day. Salter Path, the more business-oriented of the two towns, sits smack in the middle of Indian Beach. Watch the signs carefully as you drive first through Indian Beach and into Salter Path, then back in to Indian Beach once more. Here, visitors will find a handful of locally-owned restaurants and shops. Salter Path was the first on the island, having emerged in the late 1800s. Still a hub for commercial fishing, the day’s catch is abundant in Salter Path and Indian Beach. Details: www.indianbeach.org.
Pine Knoll SHores Home to one of the state’s three NC Aquariums, Pine Knoll Shores is about midway between Atlantic Beach and Indian Beach and features one of the most natural untouched areas of Bogue Banks despite a population of more than 1,500 residents. While development is allowed in this mainly residential community, it is done with a focus on minimal disturbance, making Pine Knoll Shores one of the state’s most environmentally-sensitive towns. Small in stature, the town does have a big place in history. Visitors will notice an historical marker along Hwy 58 noting the site of one of the first landings in the New World by Florentine explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano. Details: www.townofpks.com.
Fort macon state park Like a sentinel guarding the coast, Fort Macon State Park is one of the country’s best preserved Civil War fortresses and continues to be one of the most visited state parks in North Carolina. Garrisoned in 1834, Fort Macon is a living example of 19th century architecture and masonry. More than nine million bricks were used in the construction and it took some eight years to complete. Seized by the Confederacy in 1861, the site came under bombardment by Union forces in April of 1862 in order to secure the use of the harbor. A reenactment of the bombardment is celebrated annually at the site. A visitor’s center and education space helps serve the approximate 1.3 million visitors to the site, sharing the story of Fort Macon and providing a backdrop for workshops and conferences. In addition, audio programs, displays and a variety of artifacts throughout the protected site help illustrate what life was like at the fort during its years of service. The park itself encompasses 385 acres of pristine beach, dunes and maritime forest just east of Atlantic Beach. At the park’s beach access, visitors can fish from rock jetties or park at the bathhouse area for swimming and summer concessions. The park opens daily at 8am and closes at sunset. NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll shores Sign the kids up for summer fun. Camp registration begins April 1 at 6am. Camps are popular so set your alarm. Camps are offered by age group for kids entering kindergarten through eighth grade throughout the summer. Kids enjoy behind-the-scenes action and plenty of outdoor hands-on adventure. The aquarium is open 9am-5pm daily, including all of Easter weekend, Memorial Day and all other spring and summer holidays. • On April 16, visit with aquarium educators and live animals as part of the Crystal Coast Earth Day Festival at Fort Macon State Park. The aquarium comes together with a number of other conservation–minded organizations for this annual event. • Want to volunteer with your children, friends or organization? Get your hands dirty with us on Saturday, April 23, as part of the aquarium’s new Volunteer Service Corps. From 1:30-4pm, we’ll work on restoring natural habitats by planting marsh grass. There’s no commitment or training necessary. Simply sign up online and join us in the field. This is the first of four Volunteer Service Corps days the aquarium will offer this year. • Join the festivities at the aquarium’s Earth Day Party for the Planet, April 22-24. This year’s theme focuses on migrations. Watch for displays and activities emphasizing the birds, sea turtles, and other animals that make their
way to North Carolina. • In 1976, all three NC Aquariums opened their doors and this year marks their 40th anniversary. To celebrate, the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores wants to see your old aquarium photos, taken between 1976-2003. Selected shots will be featured with credit once a month on the aquarium’s Facebook page. You can submit photos on the Facebook page or send them to pksmail@ncaquariums. com. Centrally-located, Morehead City serves as the retail and business hub for the county. Small boutiques, gift shops and major chain stores make this a haven for shoppers. While an expanding general hospital, makes this the primary site for medical care. At the eastern edge of the downtown waterfront is one of the state’s two shipping ports where military ships and freighters from all over the world can be seen coming and going on any given day. While big in stature, it does little to overshadow Morehead City’s own fleet – its charter boats that line the waterfront. The scenic views give Morehead City a walk-worthy waterfront with a mixture of locally-owned shops, restaurants and nightspots. Spend the day fishing, grab dinner with friends and cap off the evening over a cold beverage. Cape Carteret & SwansBOro Cradled by the White Oak River and the Intracoastal Waterway, Cape Carteret, Cedar Point and Swansboro at the southwestern end of the Crystal Coast include a collection of neighborhoods, waterfront eateries and scenic beauty. At the intersection of Hwys 24 and 58, Cape Carteret welcomes visitors with golf courses, restaurants, shopping and more. A variety of well-known chains make this a busy retail intersection, and its easy access to the beach in Emerald Isle makes it a popular spot to settle. Cape Carteret rolls right in to Cedar Point which lines Hwy 24 with antique shops, boutiques and small businesses. The waterfront village of Swansboro is the largest of the three towns yet it continues to retain its historic charm and quaint beauty. The site is home to the oldest running Carteret County festival. History Museum Of Carteret County
Lauded time and time again for its vast genealogy library, The History Museum in Morehead City is a great place to get an overall history of the region. For genealogy and Civil War buffs, the Jack Spencer Goodwin Library houses more than 6,000 publications and an extensive county photo file. The Civil War collections are especially notable – drawing a large research audience annually to the site. The museum itself is nothing short of a success story. Originally housed on the campus of Carteret Community College, the Carteret County Historical Society members undertook a fundraising campaign that would bring them to a new home in downtown Morehead City more than 10 years ago. An old furniture store was renovated to house exhibits, the library, meeting space and a small café. Space rentals and the leased restaurant space continue to buoy the nonprofit operation. From Carteret County’s relationship with the sea to its military history, the stories are told here at The History Museum. Browse the antique doll collection, Native American artifacts, award-winning carved decoys, vintage clothing, period furniture, military memorabilia, coastal artwork and more. Learn the history of shrimp boats, read about the Tuscarora Indians and take a look at the carriage Civil War spy Emeline Pigott was riding in when captured. It is purported that Pigott carried more items of importance in her petticoat than would fit in any modern-day suitcase. The Museum Store offers unique gifts and a wide variety of local books and merchandise for all ages. Publications feature the Civil War, black history, pirates, poetry and local cookbooks. irplugs are optional as Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point welcomes guests for its biennial air show. This year’s undertaking, aptly themed “Celebrating 75 Years!” takes a look at Cherry Point’s 75 years in Eastern Carolina, April 29-May 1. Regularly playing host to more than 150,000 guests over its three-day schedule, the air show is one of those great opportunities to entertain the entire family at one venue. Add to that the fact that entry and parking is free – and folks really can’t go wrong. The show starts out with a bang Friday night, with the always-popular night show – a must see for those who haven’t experienced it before. While the Blue Angels do not perform due to safety concerns, the show includes spectacular aerial pyrotechnic displays, roaring afterburners, skydiver demonstrations and a large fireworks display set to patriotic music as well as live music. Gates open at 5pm. On Saturday and Sunday, gates open at 8am and full days of activities are on tap. for a full schedule of activities. Static displays, ride simulators and a fun zone for kids combine with vendors, live entertainment and plenty of options for food, to create a perfect family day. It’s the acrobatics in the sky, however, that steal the spotlight. This year’s air show will feature US Navy Blue Angels. Other highlights in a long lineup of performances will be the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter; 24

a spectacular demonstration by the F-22 Raptor; the Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 demo team; Geico Skytypers; the tightly choreographed aerobatics of local favorite Hubie Tolson; and a Marine Air-Ground Task Force demonstration. While all events are free, including parking, there are a limited number of special premium seats and packages available, from $10 for a bleacher seat to $80 for a full Flightline Club package, which includes breakfast and lunch, beverages, preferred parking and access to the air conditioned chalet tent and semi-private restrooms. box seats and chalet tickets available. Lawn chairs, blankets, sun screen, umbrellas, hats, jackets, cameras and, of course, those earplugs, are suggested. ATM’s are available on-site, but organizers note that the lines are often quite long. Shuttle buses will operate throughout the festivities to help people get from parking areas to the tarmac. Keep in mind that pets, glass, coolers, alcohol, pocket knives, weapons and any wheeled vehicle other than strollers and wheelchairs are prohibited. It’s also important to be mindful of the fact that guests are entering a government facility and are subject to searches at any time.
DMCRA Brings Boat Show to Waterfront
T
he Crystal Coast Boat Show, set to take over the downtown Morehead City waterfront May 21-22, is shaping up to have more boats, vendors, artists, vintage automobiles and entertainment than ever before. “We’re becoming one of the biggest boat shows in this part of the state,” said Capt. Steve Miller, chairman of the Boat Show committee. “Before the end of last year’s show, dealers and vendors were signing up for 2016. New this year, fishing seminars will be presented by Coastal Carolina Fisherman eMagazine on a variety of topics. And at the 10th Street beach, Sail Carteret, a new nonprofit organization, will be holding sailing races and offering free rides. In addition, plans are underway for a bigger and better ARTrageous art event held all weekend on the waterfront in conjunction with the Arts Council of Carteret County. At the art event, children’s activities are planned throughout the weekend. On Saturday, May 21, the Morehead City Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America will hold its 43rd annual car show at Katherine Davis Park featuring vintage vehicles that are no less than 25 years old. On Sunday, May 22, the park will host the Morehead City After Hours Rotary Club’s regional Cornhole Tournament starting at 12:30pm. Burgers, hot dogs and cold beer will be available. A beautiful walking waterfront is at the heart of this small seaport village, inviting visitors to forgo their cars for an up close and personal tour. Scenic strolls are highlighted by quaint shops, fine dining establishments and fiery red sunsets. No worry, there are plenty of spots to stop and sit along the way, giving everyone a chance to take in the scenery and perhaps a glance of the wild horses that roam Carrot Island, located just across Taylors Creek. Beaufort (pronounced “Bo-furt”), is well deserving of its “America’s Coolest Small Town” title bestowed in 2012 by Budget Travel. Noted as North Carolina’s third oldest town, Beaufort residents have gone to great pains to retain a great deal of the seaport’s history and architecture. down east Recognized as anything east of Beaufort, the small rural communities of Down East Carteret County have one thing in common – their dedication to preserving the heritage and culture of their region. Atlantic, Bettie, Cedar Island, Davis, Gloucester, Harkers Island, Lola, Marshallberg, Otway, Sea Level, Smyrna, Stacy, Straits and Williston are communities built around the water with a strong focus on fishing and boat building. It is the striking views of the water and its wildlife, however, that brings many visitors down this twolane stretch of roadway. So many so that in 2009 Hwy 70 from Merrimon Road to Cedar Island was made part of the Outer Banks Scenic Byway. On Harkers Island, you’ll find the National Park Service Visitor Center offering information on Cape Lookout Lighthouse and the Outer Banks. There are also marinas, campgrounds and accommodations, plus ferries and charter boat services available for visitors ready to hop over to the islands for the day. Beaufort Historic Site
Offering a full calendar of special events and programs to keep visitors and residents excited about Beaufort’s rich history, the Beaufort Historic Site features 11 historic buildings and the town’s original burial site, the Old Burying Ground. At the site and beyond, the Beaufort Historical Association strives to document the lifestyles and customs of Beaufort’s past to preserve its historical identity for the future. For more than 50 years, the organization has led the way in the restoration and preservation of some of the town’s most prestigious structures. The site itself includes 11buildings: the Courthouse of 1796, the oldest surviving wooden courthouse in the state; the apothecary shop, circa 1859; the Carteret County Jail, circa 1829; the Rustell House, circa 1732 and others, all enhanced by authentic artifacts. Year-round, the BHA offers tours of the town on an authentic double-decker bus complete with interesting commentary by volunteer tour guides. It also offers a variety of seminars, volunteer opportunities and special events, including several of the town’s largest annual social engagements. From the educational Kindergarten Thanksgiving to the popular Old Homes & Gardens Tour held each June, there is always something on the horizon at the Beaufort Historic Site. Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center
Found at the end of Island Road in Harkers Island, the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum strives to promote and preserve the Down East region’s valued heritage by showcasing the talents and skills of Down East residents. Preservation of the rural Eastern Carolina lifestyle is at its core, striving to document the history before it slips away. With a focus on decoy carving, boat building, storytelling, oral history or the region, local writers, traditional music, food, hunting, fishing and other skills, the talent is bountiful Down East, and Waterfowl Museum is a great place to find samples of it all. NC Maritime Museum One of three maritime museums under the NC Dept. of Cultural Resources, this Beaufort site tells the tale of the waterfront town’s relationship with the water that surrounds it – from fishing and boat building to pirates and aquatic life. The site was thrust into the spotlight in 2011 as it became home to one of the first permanent exhibit of artifacts raised from the vessel believed to be the Queen Anne’s Revenge, Blackbeard the Pirate’s flagship. Located in 1996 just outside of Beaufort Inlet, the Dept. of Cultural Resources and the museum have played a large role in funding the excavation and bringing the artifacts to the surface. New pieces are added regularly, making it a must-stop for visitors, even if they’ve been there before. Free to visit, the museum features a variety of additional exhibits, from sea life and sailing to boat building and commercial fishing. Across the street, the Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center features an active boat and model shop, where visitors can observe the active construction of wooden boats, or take a class to learn how to build their own. Rachel Carson Reserve Teeming with wildlife and natural vegetation, this series of islands located across from the Beaufort waterfront is a component of the NC National Estuarine Research Reserve. Often referred to as Bird Shoals or Carrot Island by locals, it can only be accessed by boat. Comprised of salt marshes, salt flats, tidal flats and eelgrass beds, the reserve is a favorite place for beachcombing, swimming and sunbathing. More than 200 species of birds have been sighted on the reserve and a checklist of these feathered-friends is available. Guided nature tours are offered from 8:30-10:30am, Tuesday and Thursday, June through August, including nature hikes and cruises offered by the Friends of the Reserve. Closed toe shoes, sunglasses, hats, water and sunscreen are recommended. Guests should be prepared to get their shoes wet and muddy, especially during the nature hikes. Cape Lookout National Seashore Best known for its towering lighthouse covered in black and white diamonds, Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile stretch of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, spanning from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. Three pristine barrier islands make up the national seashore – North Core Banks, South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks. Accessible only by private boat or ferry, this incredible ribbon of sand hosts unparalleled fishing, shelling and a working lighthouse. The undeveloped seashore allows for true-to-nature camping, features a restored lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a boardwalk to the beach, daily ranger programs and facilities in summer. There are no lifeguards on the beaches or maintained roads. North and South Core Banks, both noted for wonderful shelling, clamming and surf fishing, also offer rustic cabins as an alternative to camping from April through November. For those seeking to discover the seashore’s history, picturesque Portsmouth village, found at the northeastern tip of Core Banks, is a 250-acre uninhabited island community dating from 1753 and preserved as a national historic site. Exhibits in several of the historic buildings tell the history of this island community. Many visitors come to the National Seashore to view the black and white diagonal checkerboard-patterned Cape Lookout Lighthouse. A landmark since 1859, the lighthouse tower is maintained by the National Park Service. Visitors can climb the tower from mid-May to mid-September. On Shackleford Banks, history may wander past you in the form of the Shackleford Banks wild horses. The Light Station Visitor Center, found near the lighthouse ferry dock, has a shaded pavilion and boardwalk
connecting it to the beach. There are exhibits along the boardwalk and at the nearby Keepers’ Quarters Museum. Exhibits focus on lighthouse history and early shipwrecks and rescues. The Light Station Visitor Center and the Keepers’ Quarters Museum are open to the public, April through November. A Visitor Information Center is located on Front Street in Beaufort. Inside exhibits introduce visitors to the stories of the island communities, the lighthouse and other local history as well as some of the island wildlife. Ferry tickets for trips to Shackleford Banks may be purchased here. The seashore’s main visitor center, located on Harkers Island. Exhibits tell the story of island communities, the US Life-Saving Service and other local history. An indoor theater offers a short film and the visitor center bookstore features books, tapes, videos and children’s items related to Cape Lookout National Seashore. A nature trail winds along the shore to an observation deck overlooking Core Sound. Public restrooms and a nearby picnic area are available and wheelchair accessible. Wooden Boat Show Sets Sail
W
hether you’re a boating enthusiast or prefer to keep your feet on dry land, the 42nd annual Wooden Boat Show has activities for all ages on Saturday, May 7. The show organized annually by Beaufort’s NC Maritime Museum, however, most of the displays spill out into the streets of downtown Beaufort. The longest ongoing wooden boat show in the southeast, free to attend, celebrates the art of North Carolina boat building and the sport of boat racing. Dozens of handcrafted wooden boats will be on display and activities are available for all ages from 10am to 4pm. Paul Fontenoy, Curator of Maritime Research and Technology, says the show has something to offer everyone, even if you’re not a wooden boat enthusiast. “We pay a lot of attention to making sure the show is not just interesting for wooden boat enthusiasts,” Fontenoy explains. “So we have activities for children and opportunities for families to do things together, such as taking a boat ride.” Youngsters can take part in maritime games and crafts in the kids area. Families can team up to test their skills in sailing radio-controlled model boats. And, kids can also make their own model sailboats. 30

Enjoy traditional skills demonstrations & displays, educational activities, historic vessels, boat models, traditional sailboat races at 3pm, and sailboat rides from 1 to 3pm. On of the most anticipated events is the demonstration by Jim Goodwin and his Ships in Bottles. Attendees will have the opportunity to see one of the best known craftsmen in the art of building ships in a bottle. His demonstrations take place Friday from 5:30 to 7:30pm and Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Last year, the legendary Cricket II made its debut at Beaufort’s Annual Wooden Boat Show. Once again, visitors to the Beaufort waterfront will have the opportunity to see the fishing boat that became the inspiration for the book and movie “Jaws.” On Thursday, May 5, and Friday, May 6, free boat rides will be offered from 1 to 4pm outside the Watercraft Center (a $5 per person donation is suggested, which goes toward the sailing program). The Wooden Boat Show weekend opening event on Friday, May 6, includes a reception and live music from 5:30 to 7:30pm. The NC Maritime Museum is located at 315 Front St., Beaufort. f we had to pick a theme for spring along the Crystal Coast, it would definitely involve music. Free concert series around the county begin in earnest, and two great music festivals draw crowds to waterfront towns. Always a favorite, the Beaufort Music Festival returns to downtown Beaufort May 20-21 after two years outside of town. When road work forced organizers to bring the festival to the Beaufort Historic Site on Turner Street in 2015, a partnership was forged that will keep the popular two-day event close to the action. And hardcore fans will delight in the news that the festival is once again free to attend. 34

Beer, it seems, has saved the day. For the past two years, a free event was held on Friday and the main event on Saturday required a small ticket price. Last year, however, with the advent of beer sales, organizers found there is more than one way to raise the much-needed funds to hold the festival. “We’re excited about it,” said board member John Hackney. “It’s a community event so we’re really glad to be back in the heart of the community, without having to take a drive or a trolley. “There are certainly pros and cons to both places, but last year when we moved the festival to the historic site, we really liked the location and they were great to
work with. It just makes sense to hold it there again.” An additional stage featuring North Carolina bands will be located on Middle Lane and a children’s area will be manned through partnerships with the Tiller School and Beaufort Elementary. Bands scheduled to perform include North Carolina favorites L-Shape Lot, Midatlantic, The Paper Stars, Beaufort Blues Project, Tan & Sober Gentlemen, Banditos and the Low Counts, who brought the crowd to their feet two years ago. While Beaufort is rocking and rolling, Atlantic Beach is hoping the third time is the charm as it unleashes its third Beach Music Festival on Saturday, May 21. The family friendly festival is held on the beach at the Circle from 11am to 6pm. Guests are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets as they cozy up to the stage. But with plenty of great beach music on tap, we’re sure it will be challenging not to get up and dance with area favorites. John Moore serves as emcee as the Holiday Band, Band of Oz, the Fantastic Shakers and Mighty Saints of Soul bring take to the stage. The festival atmosphere will be enhanced with food and beer vendors along with T-shirts, hats and cozies to commemorate the
event. “The Circle location is an important part of our past, but it is also a critical part of our future,” said Mayor Trace Cooper. “Holding events like this at the Circle ensures that it will remain the heart of Atlantic Beach while we wait for the commercial redevelopment in area to take hold and once again make the Circle our downtown. One of the special things about the event is that we hold it on the beach along the Boardwalk. This is a natural place of beach music, but it is also the former location of The Pavilion which is an important part of our town’s history and the history of beach music. Some beach music historians believe that the shag was invented there.” Leading up to the main festival, several events are slated that honor just that – Atlantic Beach and its place in shag and beach music history. On Saturday, May 14, a Jolly Knave Reunion is planned at Memories Beach Club and on Wednesday, May 18, the Doubletree by Hilton hosts a beach music celebration as part of the Chamber after Hours program. During the festival, parking will be available at the Causeway Shopping Center, Doubletree by Hilton and Town Park, with free shuttle to and from the Circle/ Boardwalk area every 30 minutes. Riders are only allowed one folding chair per person. Be sure to pack those dancing shoes!

Highlights Going Publick in Beaufort
To kick off the spring season, the Beaufort Historical Association brings patrons back in time for Publick Day, an old-fashioned marketplace set up on the grounds of the Beaufort Historic Site. Visit the market from 9am4pm on Saturday, April 16. As in years past, the grounds of the site will recreate Publick Times when colonial merchants set up shop outside during court session. Vendors will sell antiques, vintage finds, collectibles, arts and crafts, wood crafts, furniture, hand-made jewelry, baskets, pottery and much more. Fashioned after Williamsburg of the 1700s when the general court was in session, Publick Day gave visitors from far and wide an opportunity to come to town to see and be seen, conduct court business, shop, gossip, dine and dance. This event is held rain or shine. All proceeds from Publick Day go towards to on-going restoration efforts and educational programs of the BHA. Start Spring on the Right Foot
An annual family and fitness road race, the annual Lookout Spring Road Race is sponsored by the Lookout Rotary Club and scheduled for Saturday, April 23, be-

ginning at the Sports Center, Morehead City. The course for the race is fast and flat, with an event for every age and skill level. There are 10K and 5K races, along with a 1-mile fun run, each with numerous age divisions. Race registration begins at 7am on Saturday; the 1-mile run begins at 8; 1-mile fitness walk and toddler push begins at 8:05; and the 10K, 5K run and 5K fitness walk begin at 8:30. All events feature electronic chip timing and take place on accurate courses; finish line timing and registration provided by Run the East, LLC. The cost is $25 per person and $50 per family before April 17; $30 per person and $60 per family after. Race proceeds are donated to Rotary-supported charitable groups with emphasis on local programs. Bluegrass by the River
The biannual White Oak Shores Bluegrass Festival provides a great opportunity to see 20 bluegrass concerts in two days. Located in Stella, the White Oak Shores Camping and RV Resort plays host to the festival scheduled for noon to 11pm on Friday and Saturday April 29-30.
Al Batten hosts both days of the festival. He has toured with the NC Symphony and is a member of Al Batten and the Bluegrass Reunion, which is scheduled to perform. Also on tap are Ted Jones & the Tarheel Boys, Three Rivers Band, Highway 58, Sweet Potato Pie, Kelly & the Cowboys, Boys from Carolina and others. Tickets for the event are $20 per person, per day or $35 for both days. Camping packages are also available, however, camping is not required. Food and beverages are available during the event. Reelin’ Them in for Research
The Reelin’ for Research Offshore Fishing Tournament, which benefits the NC Children’s Promise, a component of the NC Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill, will see committed anglers dropping their lines in the water on Saturday, April 30. Morehead City will be the hub of the weekend’s activities, including the focal event: an eight-hour deep sea fishing excursion consisting of both private and chartered vessels. Fishing begins at 8am with the official weigh-in at Morehead City waterfront from 4-6pm. Awards and bragging rights immediately follow at Jack’s Waterfront Bar. All teams are responsible for a minimum of $1,000 per boat in fundraising efforts; the winning team will be determined by aggregate weight of the three largest meat fish from the following: wahoo, dolphin, & tuna. Relive the Civil War
People often remember their history classes as boring and dry. However Fort Macon State Park will change some of that Saturday and Sunday, April 23-24 with a Civil War Reenactment. The First NC Volunteers/11th NC Regiment and other reenacting groups will portray troops from the Civil War era. The public program is ongoing from 10am-4pm each day and offers visitors a glimpse back in time to the American Civil War. Uniformed military and civilian living historians will demonstrate life in the fort. Activities include military drill and weapons demonstrations, as well as firing some of the large artillery pieces located in the fort. There are several opportunities for visitors of all ages to join in with the reenactors during the day in the form of interactive activities including drilling on the parade ground and a narrated Women’s fashion show. A small skirmish is scheduled for 1:30pm to show how the fort’s

Miles of Sand & Hope
Everyone is invited to grab their buckets and head to the beach in front of the Atlantis Lodge in Atlantic Beach on Saturday, May 7 to enjoy the sun and fun of sandcastle building during the annual Mile of Hope celebration. The annual event offers children suffering from cancer and their families a fun-filled three-day getaway at the beach. The children come throughout North Carolina, however, all of them are being treated at pediatric oncology departments at ECU in Greenville, UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University. The event involves more than 100 children in all, along with their family members, and includes lodging, food and a full schedule fun at the beach. This year’s theme is “Dragons – Keepers of the Treasure” and will feature sand sculpting, a boat ride, fun at an amusement park, hunting for shark’s teeth, tours of the NC Aquarium and interacting with pirates. The public is invited to come out and cheer on the pint sized artists as they sculpt their best castle at the Atlantis Lodge. hat started as a small annual festival has grown to offer culinary events throughout the year. The official Wine & Food Weekend, however, continues to be the organization’s show stopper. Now in its twelfth offering, the near-week of food centric events runs April 27-May 1, combining the public’s appreciation for wine and food with its drive to support worthy local organizations. During this year’s festival, guests will find even more opportunities to break bread with local and guest chefs and rub elbows with visiting wine makers, sommeliers and distributers. Always a highlight, guests will find expanded options for paired wine dinners. In past years, the much-coveted dinners were held on Thursdays only at a handful of the county’s restaurants. This year, dinners will be on both Wednesday, April 27, and Thursday, April 28 and see eleven Carteret County restaurants and two private homeowners welcome guest chefs and winemakers for meticulously paired four-course meals. “After having years of sold-out dinners, we’re pleased to be able to offer more opportunities for foodies to experience dinners in both area restaurants and private homes,” explained Executive Director Lindsay Parker. “It speaks volumes about the caliber of our local wine and culinary scene when we can grow our festival to spotlight Carteret County’s chefs with visiting talent from all over the world.” Also returning is the popular Historic District Wine Walkabout, which is held at three of Beaufort’s picture-perfect homes and the equally as interesting Harvey W.
