Midshipmen Pick Gallagher as 2011 Captain

• Senior defensive midfielder Marty Gallagher has been voted by his peers to serve as the 2011 Navy lacrosse captain. • It is the eighth-consecutive season a member of Navy’s defense has been chosen as the team’s captain ... the trend began in 2004 when long stick midfielder Thomas “Bucky” Morris anchored a Navy squad that would set a school record for wins and play in the National Championship ... Morris was followed by goalkeeper-turned-long stick midfielder Seth DiNola in 2005 and in 2006, Navy was represented by co-captains Matt Russell on defense and Jon Birsner on offense ... Navy’s next three captains all played pivotal roles as close defensemen in the likes of Andrew Dow in 2007, three-time AllAmerican Jordan DiNola in 2008 and Honorable Mention All-American Andy Tormey in 2009 ... last year’s captain, Anthony Arena, provided leadership as a member of the defensive midfield corps.. • Gallagher has played in all 47 games since arriving in Annapolis, but last year was asked to step into a leadership role among the defensive midfielders. Having had the most experience among the d-middies, he helped anchor a defensive unit that was ranked 13th nationally in scoring defense and gave up 8.67 goals per game. In Patriot League play, the Mids surrendered the fewest goals(44) and paced the league with their 7.33 goals per game scoring defense. In 2008, the Mids were ranked third nationally in scoring defense (6.50 gpg) and and seventh (7.69 gpg) in 2009. Individually, he was one of two players on the roster last spring to register doubledigit takeaways, as he caused 10 turnovers in the 15 contests. • Additionally, Gallagher has been a member of the Mids’ man-down defense over the last two seasons. In 2009, Navy was ranked No. 1 in the country, giving up just six goals in 40 attempts, warding off 85.0 percent of the opponents’ extra-man opportunities. This past season, Navy owned a 66.1 man-down percentage. • An systems engineering major, he will graduate in May and be commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy. His service assignment is Submarines.

The Nation’s Future Leaders

• Each year head coach Richie Meade looks to his senior class to provide leadership for his team ... though a small class of just nine players, the Class of 2011 has been a part of one of the most successful periods in Navy lacrosse history. • In three years, the Class of 2011 has amassed a 28-19 (.596) overall record, including a 13-5 Patriot League mark (.722). • Navy was the co-regular-season Patriot League champion in 2008 when this class of seniors was plebes and captured the 2009 Patriot League Tournament title. • It has twice made NCAA Tournament appearances (2008, ‘09). • It has turned in 10-plus wins in two of the last three seasons. • Meanwhile, this class enjoyed the Mids’ first win over Johns Hopkins since 1974 when the Class of 2011’s Andy Warner scored the game-winner in overtime against the Blue Jays last spring. • The following is a list of Navy’s seniors and their service assignments. The Youth Revolution

• After graduating 19 seniors off last year’s team, 17th-year Navy head coach Richie Meade will field one of the youngest teams in recent memory. • Of the 56 players on the roster, 39 are either freshmen or sophomores ... the plebe class is made up of 27 players alone, easily the largest rookie class he’s had at the Academy. • Meanwhile, Navy’s senior class is made up of just nine members, the third-smallest senior class in his 17 seasons. • With just five starters returning off last season’s squad, Meade is expected to put three freshmen on the field at attack, while newcomer Pat Kiernan will play an instrumental role as either a pole or close defenseman.

Navy Among All-Time Winningest Programs

• Navy is one of just six Div. I men’s lacrosse programs that has produced 700 wins. • With 746 wins, Navy is the third-winningest team in Div. I men’s lacrosse history behind Johns Hopkins (899 wins) and Syracuse (806 wins). • Navy will face three of the other 700-win programs this year in consecutive weekends - vs. Maryland on April 8, vs. Army on April 16 and at Johns Hopkins on April 23.
