ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE PROACTIVE PROGRAM Students work one-on-one with mentors on a multitude of issues including academics, athletics and the university environment. The program is designed to enhance their success as a college student-athlete. EPS 199 Academic and Personal Development is a course developed by the NAU School of Education. The course is designed to assist student-athletes with study skills development, career planning and personal development as the student makes the transition into the university environment.

The NAU Swimming & Diving team totaled 21 Golden Eagle Scholar-Athlete Awards in 2012. Swimmer Kristin Jones (second row, second from left) was named NAU’s Golden Eagle Co-Female Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Academics in the athletics department has taken on a new meaning at Northern Arizona University. The academic services are under the direction of assistant athletic director of academic services Pam Lowie and academic coordinator Diana Ulrey, and offer numerous programs to help the student-athletes throughout their academic careers. The results have been impressive, especially for the swimming and diving program, which totaled a 3.36 GPA for the Spring 2011 semester. Six members of the swimming and diving team recorded perfect 4.00 GPAs for the semester, as seven NAU teams cumulative posted GPAs above 3.00. NAU places great emphasis on providing students with critical services to support their education. All academic support programs are intended to allow student-athletes to build partnerships on campus that will increase their chances of academic and personal success and prepare them for life after college. The Northern Arizona academic coordinators have created several programs to help student-athletes attain their academic goals:

COMMUNITY OUTREACH NAU student-athletes give back to the community and explore potential career paths in a unique program that includes participation in a variety of interactions within the elementary schools such as “Read Across America” and “Be a Student Athlete for a Day.” One of the most popular community outreach events is Red Ribbon Week, which features student-athletes and coaches visiting area schools to speak about and promote a drug-free lifestyle. ACADEMIC AWARDS Two of the most prestigious events on the NAU athletics calendar recognize student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. The annual Golden Eagle Awards banquet recognizes students for their overall grade-point average while the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll recognizes academic achievements based on semester success. CHOICES Student Athlete Advisory Board Leaders from all NAU varsity squads meet bimonthly to discuss student-athlete issues that are both local and national in scale. The Student Athlete Advisory Board plays a large part in the development of new programs and policies for the NAU athletics department. Academic Enrichment Student-athletes interact with support services on a weekly basis as they progress toward their degrees. Student-athletes utilize tutors, attend study-skills workshops and conduct Internet research at the Learning Assistance Centers, Cline Library and the Writing Lab.

The divers will compete at Air Force the following week and the team will end its regular season at Arizona State on Feb. 2 ahead of the WAC Championships, where NAU will look to build on its second-place finish in 2012.

Event Breakdown Freestyle NAU returns significant experience in both the sprint and distance freestyle events. Senior Kelsey Loy is the top returning sprinter after she helped NAU set a program record in the 200 medley relay with her 50 free leg last season. She will be joined in sprints by junior Becky Russell coming off an injury-shortened season and several newcomers including Ellie Morrissey, Halle Wilson, Molly Elkins, Cassie Ronai, and Trinity Frazee. Junior Emma Lowther should lead the team in the 200 and longer freestyle events after she set a program record in the 200 free last season and had top-3 all-time finishes in the 500 and 1650 free. The CollegeSwimming.com MidMajor All-American will be joined in distance events by sophomore Caitlin Wright, who also had topfive times last year in the 500 and 1650 free and was named NAU's female Newcomer of the Year, as well as newcomers Kendall Brown and Eva Pold. Alex Huff, who redshirted her freshman season last year due to injury, as well as sophomore Meagan Morrison and senior Danielle Palbykin will also be key contributors among NAU's freestyle squad.

Smith provide a dynamic pair at the top of the returning Lumberjack breaststrokers. Burnes won the WAC 100 breast title last season with a program record and NCAA "B" time and also posted the third fastest time in the 200 breast. Smith also made the top-five list with her 200 breast time at WAC championship and will also contribute, along with Burnes, in relay events. Freshman Monica Pruett will also be a strong scorer in breaststroke events and has already begun to push NAU's returners in practice. Morrison and sophomore Emily Lewandowski add experience to the breaststroke group while Ronai will also add depth to the event. Butterfly Palmer, the 2011-12 NAU female athlete of the year and a CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major All-American, won the 200 butterfly WAC Championship with a school record and NCAA "B" time of 1:58.82 - more than three seconds faster than the previous program record. She will look to lower that time to ascend to her first NCAA championship this season while leading the team in the 200 fly along with returning junior Andrea Derflinger. Sophomore Alexis Juergens was NAU's leader in the 100 fly at the 2012 WAC Championships in posting the fifth fastest time in program history and will be aided by newcomers Elkins and Morrissey in the sprint butterfly event. Russell, Brown, and others will also contribute to a deep group of butterfly swimmers.

Individual Medley Connell and Palmer set program records in the 200 and 400 individual medleys, respectively, at the 2012 WAC Championships. Palmer also posted the fourth fastest 200 IM Arrivals time in program history and Burnes also had top-four allSwimming 5-3 Fr.-HS Wichita, Kans. time finishes in both events. The Swimming 5-8 Fr.-HS Aliso Viejo, Calif. trio should once again lead the Swimming 5-10 Fr.-HS Mesa, Ariz. squad in both the individual and Swimming 5-10 Fr.-HS Mesa, Ariz. team medley events while Smith Diving 5-6 Fr.-HS Flagstaff, Ariz. Swimming 5-9 Fr.-HS Huntington Beach, Calif. will also provide experience in the 200 event. Freshmen Pruett, Swimming 5-6 Fr.-HS San Diego, Calif. Brown and Pold will be expected Swimming 5-3 Fr.-HS Houston, Texas to contribute, especially in the Swimming 5-5 Fr.-HS Chandler, Ariz. 400 IM, as the team has no Diving 5-7 Fr.-HS San Clemente, Calif. shortage of swimmers who can Swimming 5-4 Fr.-HS Phoenix, Ariz. compete at a high level across several events.

Backstroke Senior Fi Connell, a three time Mid-Major All-American, will look to cap her outstanding collegiate career by building on her program record times in the 100 and 200 backstroke and reaching the NCAA Championships. She has won the 200 back WAC title in each of her three seasons and will look to claim a second 100 back title this season. Junior Ashani Gottlieb returns after posting the fifth fastest 200 back time in program history last season and junior Rachel Palmer also brings plenty of experience on both backstroke events. Freshman Brooke Brittain is also expected to be a contributor in the events along with Huff and newcomers Frazee and Wilson. Ardavanis finished second on 1meter and fourth on 3-meter at the 2012 WAC Championships and competed on both boards at the NCAA Zone Diving Regional. She earned Verizon WAC Diver of the Week honors five times in 2011-12 and will look to end her superb NAU career with a pair of WAC titles. The Lumberjacks also return junior Gwen Smithberg, who last year in her first season at NAU scored the fourth highest platform score in program history, as well as sophomore Katie Dallmann and junior Jane Wakefield, both of whom will look to build off their experience into scoring positions at the conference meet. The returners will be joined by two newcomers, including Flagstaff native and Northland Prep graduate Chelsea Jackson. Carlye Townsend also joins the team after leading her AAU diving team to the 2011 national championship, as Nikki Huffman's squad once again looks to be the premier diving program in the Western Athletic Conference.

Andy Johns enters for his 17th season as the Northern Arizona head swimming and diving coach. Throughout his NAU career, Johns has continued to take on new challenges and strives to take his program to the next level. Johns' squad reached new heights during the 2011-12 season, as his team won five individual titles and placed second overall at the WAC Championships. Junior Fi Connell and sophomore Rachel Palmer each won two individual titles and NAU won the 800 freestyle relay, its first WAC really title in program history. The Lumberjacks combined for a program-record 11 NCAA 'B' Standard times and broke eight school records during the meet. NAU also earned dual meet wins during the season over Washington State, Idaho, New Mexico State and Colorado State, among others, before placing second among the eight teams competing at the conference meet. Connell, Palmer, and sophomores Emma Lowther and Jordan Burnes were all named CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major All-Americans, while Palmer was named NAU's Female Athlete of the Year and freshman Caitlin Wright was named Newcomer of the Year. NAU continued to excel in the classroom as well, posting program-record GPA's during both semesters including a 3.52 mark in the spring, the 10th highest GPA among all Division-I women's swimming & diving programs. Johns led his Lumberjack squad to a third place finish at the WAC Championships in 2010-11, with the Lumberjacks collecting 21 All-WAC awards during the four-day championship meet. NAU broke six school records and produced 41 top 16 individual finishes and five point-scoring relays. Sophomore Fi Connell repeated as the 200 backstroke champion, won silver in the 100 backstroke, and bronze in the 200 individual medley. Connell built off her sensational freshman season in which she won gold medals in both the 100 and 200 backstroke. She became the first multiple winner for NAU at a championship meet since Emily Simon in 2004 and hit NCAA qualifying times in both events. Connell was named to the 2010 and 2011 Division I Mid-Major AllAmerica team by www.collegeswimming.com. She was joined on the 2011 squad by Emma Lowther after the freshman took home a silver medal at the WAC meet. Johns led NAU to a pair of second place finishes at the WAC Championships prior to a fifth place finish in 2010. The Lumberjacks earned the runner-up title among nine teams in 200809 and finished second among eight teams during the 2007-08 season. At the 2009 WAC Championships, the Lumberjacks earned 43 All-WAC Awards and set 11 school records, marking the most records set at the WAC meet in the five years NAU has been a member as well as the most records ever set at a conference meet in Johns’ 14 years. The 43 All-WAC Awards are also the most to date, and were four more than NAU had earned the previous year. Johns coached an individual gold medalist as then-junior Rachael Foe earned the honor in the 200 individual medley. Two of NAU’s relay teams also earned silver medals along with school records. Along with its second-place team finish in 2007-08, NAU earned 39 All-WAC Awards, set six school records and earned two special awards. Diving Coach Nikki Huffman received co-WAC Diving Coach of the Year and senior Natalie Hughes was named the WAC Diver of the Year. Six years ago Johns helped NAU finish third among the eight teams in the WAC and set seven school records at the conference meet. Alexis Buckley earned an individual WAC title for the second year in the row, winning the 400 individual medley in a schoolrecord time. In 2005-06, the Lumberjacks placed third at the WAC meet for the first time, and also set three school records. Johns coached Buckley, a distance freestyle swimmer, to a qualifying time for the NCAA Championships. Buckley swam in both the 1,650 and 500 freestyle at the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., and was the first female swimmer JOHNS’ MEET RECORD at NAU to represent Year Overall* Pct. Duals Pct. Academic Team, and set a total of nine school records at the championships. In 2003-04, the year before joining the WAC, NAU finished second at the National Independent Conference (NIC) Championships and Johns was named the NIC Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year. NAU had seven individual conference champions, tying the team record for the most champions in a single conference meet. The Lumberjacks also set 10 school records, and earned two other honors in addition to Johns’, as assistant coach Nikki Huffman earned her fourth Diving Coach of the Year honor and then-sophomore Blair Buder was named the Female Diver of the Year. Over the years, Johns has put NAU swimming and diving on the map on several levels, including the regional stage as well as producing perennial conference-title contenders when he moved the program from the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference into the all-Division I NIC in 1998-99. In 11 years against exclusively Division I competition at the conference level, Johns has led NAU to seven second-place finishes (including three straight from 2001-04) and three third-place efforts. Success for NAU not only shows in the team standings, but also in the record book. In Johns' 14 years, NAU has earned 47 individual and relay conference titles, 95 school records (a high of 11 set at the 2009 WAC meet), nine conference records and 16 NCAA qualifying marks. In 2001, NAU earned its first individual NIC champions (Chelsey Urban and Kate Morgan) and finished a strong third in the conference meet. Johns then raised the bar even higher and led NAU to a second-place NIC finish in 2002, just a few points shy of the program's first Division I conference title. Johns has always been a proponent of the "total" program one that also succeeds in the classroom. Since the fall of 1996, his student-athletes have posted cumulative grade-point averages of 3.00 and higher in 32 of 34 academic semesters. The Lumberjacks have consistently had the most student-athletes earn Academic All-WAC honors among the schools in the league, with 20 earning the honor last year. The 2007-08 squad earned a record 28 NAU Golden Eagle Scholar Athlete Awards. NAU has been recognized six times as an Academic All-America Team by the Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) including last year's squad which posted a 3.52 grade point average in the fall. Johns came to NAU in 1996 from Clemson, where he trained the sprinters, including one NCAA All-American. Prior to that, he spent three years as head coach at Northeast Missouri State (now Truman State). During his tenure, his teams set 45 school records and five athletes posted their first national qualifying times. Johns is well-respected in the swimming research community, having presented at the American College of Sports Medicine national meeting twice, first about the effects of warm-up in 1991 and tapering in 1992. Johns is published in many sports medicine journals, including the International Journal of Sports Medicine and Medicine and Science in Sport in Exercise. He was awarded a research fellowship from the Institute of Nutrition at the University of North Carolina in 1990. As a collegian at East Carolina, Johns helped his team to the Colonial Athletic Association title in 1989. Prior to ECU, he was a junior-college All-American, earning the honor eight times in two years at Broward (Fla.) Community College. Outside of his time as a coach, Johns has performed with the Flagstaff Light Opera Company, including the musicals Oliver and The Secret Garden, and is currently a member of The Flagstaff Master Chorale. Johns received his bachelor's degree in physical education from ECU in 1989 and followed that with a master's in exercise physiology in 1991. Johns has one daughter, Ali.

DIVING COACH NIKKI HUFFMAN

NIKKI HUFFMAN Diving Coach 17th Season Oakland University, 1991

Nikki Huffman begins her 17th year at the helm of the Northern Arizona diving program, a squad that she has consistently led to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. A four-time National Independent Conference (NIC) Diving Coach of the Year, Huffman now takes her team into its ninth year of Western Athletic Conference (WAC) competition, a league which boasts some of the top divers in the country. NAU placed four divers in the NCAA Zone meet in 2011-12, including All-WAC First Team performer Kristy Ardavanis, who was named Verizon WAC Diver of the Week five times during the regular season. She took the silver on 1-meter and placed fourth on 3-meter to lead NAU at the WAC Championships and posted the second-highest scores in program history on both boards during the season. Seniors Holly Frost and Cassie Anderson and freshman Kali Lents joined Ardavanis as qualifiers for the NCAA Zone meet, and Lents' score of 221.00 on platform at the WAC Championships was the second-best platform score in program history. The program reached new heights in 2010-11, as the Lumberjacks sent six divers to the NCAA Zone Regional Championships, the most in school history. Senior Lana Christensen was the top finisher posting an 11th-place finish on 3-meter. NAU combined to take home five All-WAC selections, while senior Taryn Harris named WAC Diver of the Week twice and Christensen was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America At Large Team. In 2009-10, the diving team picked up nine All-WAC honors including medals from Harris and freshman Kristy Ardavanis. Ardavanis won bronze on 3-meter springboard and Harris won silver on 1-meter. Huffman qualified four divers for the NCAA Zone Diving Regional Championships. Harris went on to place 12th on the 1-meter at

the Zone meet. In 2008-09, Harris earned bronze medals at the WAC Championships on both 1-meter and 3-meter. Harris went on to earn eighth place at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships on the 1-meter, joining two other Lumberjacks at that meet. Huffman and her divers had a breakout year in 2007-08, as senior Natalie Hughes became NAU’s first-ever gold-medal winner in diving in the WAC (3-meter) and was named the WAC Diver of the Year. Huffman herself earned her first WAC Diving Coach of the Year Award, sharing the honor with Mike Brown of Hawaii. In the eight years prior to joining the WAC, the Lumberjacks dominated conference competition in the NIC. Huffman has brought the Lumberjacks to an elite status at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships, represented by schools from the Pacific-10, WAC, Big West and Mountain West conferences. NAU won 11 individual conference diving titles in eight years in the NIC women's competition under Huffman's guidance, and earned four conference diver-of-the-year awards (including back-to-back honors by Kate Morgan in 2002 and 2003, and the most recent by Blair Buder in 2004). Huffman was named the Women's Diving Coach of the Year four times (1997, 2002, 2003, 2004). A year prior to Harris’ impressive eighth-place finish at the Zone meet, Hughes, who represented NAU all four years of her career, finished seventh on both 1-meter and 3-meter. Danielle Borth was a three-time representative, and placed 10th on the 1meter and 12th on the platform as a senior. Both divers finished in the top-8 on all three events at the WAC Championships their junior and senior years, with Hughes earning the bronze medal on the 1-meter as a junior and the gold as a senior, and Borth taking bronze on 1-meter and 3-meter as a senior. Not only has NAU been dominant on the conference level, but it is starting to gain a name for itself on a national level. Over the last nine years, Lumberjacks have taken 32 spots at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships, which is the fourth-most among all schools represented at the meet over that span (trailing only UCLA, Stanford and Arizona) - ahead of most Pac-12 and all Mountain West, WAC and Big West schools. The senior class of 2003 for Huffman was the most successful, as all three - Kate Morgan, Maryann Wagener and Courtney McKenzie - participated in the zone meet in all four years they were at the Mountain Campus, led by Morgan as the top finisher every year and even being a second alternate to the NCAA Championships in 2003. Over the last 13 years, Huffman has produced multiple divers that qualified for the zone meet every year. All in all, 23 different divers have represented NAU at the zone diving meet on the women's side since Huffman arrived; that is nearly twice the number that represented the school in the previous 13 years of the program's existence. While success on the boards has been prominent in describing Huffman, her student-athletes have also been superior in the classroom. The divers have helped the Lumberjacks be named an Academic All-America Team by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) six times - an honor given to a team with a grade-point average of 2.90 and higher. Anna Deem was named an honorable-mention Academic All-America by the CSCAA and Courtney McKenzie also earned the CSCAA honor and, in addition, was named the NAU Golden Eagle Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2002-03. She also earned selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Women's At Large District VIII First Team, making her a nominee for Academic AllAmerica consideration. Danielle Borth was the first diver to be named Academic All-WAC every year of her career. Borth earned another first when The Leadership Consortium (TCL) in Phoenix named her one of their 2008 Community Leadership Award winners. Borth contributed 132 hours of community service as a senior, and was also named the female Lumberjack Service Award winner. Prior to NAU, Huffman spent two years at Clemson, where she was voted the 1996 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Diving Coach of the Year. With the Tigers, Huffman coached both men's and women's diving teams to winning seasons, with the women's team being ranked in the top-25 of the national coaches' poll in 1996. She had one ACC champion each year and took five divers to the zone meet in 1996. Huffman began her coaching career at her alma mater, Oakland University. She coached six All-Americans and three Division II national champions, being named Division II National Men's Diving Coach of the Year in 1994. At Oakland, she coached Dario D'Fazio, who represented Venezuela in the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics. As an athlete, Huffman was a seven-time All-America and two-time national champion during her career at Oakland, where she returned every time the NIC Championships were held at the Rochester, Mich. school. A 1991 graduate of Oakland, the former Nikki Kelsey was married in the summer of 2001. She gave birth to a daughter, Kayla, in the summer of 2003, and to a son, Darren, in the spring of 2005.

PROGRAM HISTORY The Northern Arizona swimming and diving program began just as the foundation was drying on the Natatorium. The athletics director at the time, Hank Anderson, added a women's swimming and diving program to the athletics department in 1983, and tabbed former Arizona State All-American Pam Rogers as head coach. Since the program was not affiliated with the Big Sky, Rogers went to find a niche for her new program. After wandering in other conferences, Rogers worked with coaches from other independent schools and established the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference in 1986, a league of Division I, II and III schools. The word 'dynasty' was quickly applied to Rogers' program, as NAU won

the first four PCSC championships on the women's side (1987, 1988, 1989 and 1990). Upon the success with the women, athletics director Tom Jurich put Rogers on the national map when he added men's swimming and diving in 1990 and named Rogers the head coach - making her one of only three women in Division I to lead a combined program. Her winning touch rubbed off on the men, as they won the PCSC title in their first two years (1991, 1992). The men's program would win six titles in seven years. NAU would reach regional and national success by producing NCAA Championships qualifiers in the 1990s, the program's first such athletes. The first Lumberjack to see NCAA competition was

diver Rob Sherman, who finished 22nd in the nation in 1992. April Diez made the biggest national splash, becoming the first NAU woman to compete at the national meet and the first swimming All-American when she finished sixth in the mile freestyle and ninth in the 500 in 1994. The program joined the National Independent Conference in 1998 and returned to women-only status in 1999. After Diez, Andrea Redman was an NCAA qualifier in 1998 and 1999 and was followed by Chelsey Urban in 2001. NAU was a strong member of the NIC, finishing second in 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2004 and a solid third in 2001. In 2004-05, the program moved on

from the NIC and joined the Western Athletic Conference, placing fifth in the first year and earning head coach Andy Johns the title of WAC Coach of the Year. A year later, NAU finished third and Alexis Buckley became the first swimmer in 12 years to represent the Lumberjacks at the NCAA Championships. NAU again finished third in 2007-08, and the 2008-09 season saw NAU earn its highest WAC finish, placing 2nd. After finishing fifth in 2009-10, the Lumberjacks placed third in 10-11 and were second last season with five event titles with 11 NCAA “B” times and eight program records. In 29 years of existence, the NAU women have won six team and 88 individual and relay conference titles.

HALL OF FAMERS AND NCAA PARTICIPANTS Valerie Carter (1984-87), a 2006 NAU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, didn’t know it but, right after the ball dropped to start 2006, the ball started rolling on her induction. Keeping it a complete secret, Joe Carter contacted the NAU Athletic Media Relations office in early January to inquire about nominating his wife for the honor, and from there, Carter’s numerous accomplishments in diving at NAU began to surface. Carter (formerly Simmons) qualified for the NCAA Championships twice, becoming the first athlete in the program to ever qualify, and also became the school record-holder in both the one and three-meter events as well as the Pac-West Conference champion in both events as a junior. Carter was the team co-captain as a senior, all-academic Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference honoree and was twice named the team’s most outstanding diver. Carter didn’t just receive a degree, pack up and leave. She has made Flagstaff her home, and NAU her career. She has four different degrees from the university in physical therapy including an advanced master’s and a doctorate. Carter currently works as an associate professor in the Physical Therapy Department, and also owns and operates Carter Rehabilitation in town along with her husband.

April Diez-Walker (1992-96), a first-ballot inductee into the NAU Athletics Hall of Fame, was the first female swimmer to compete at the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships and is the only swimming All-American in school history. Diez-Walker was a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier and still holds three individual school records - the 500 freestyle, 1,000 freestyle and 1,650 freestyle. A 1994 NCAA All-American in the 1,650freestyle, she finished sixth overall at the NCAA meet and placed ninth in the 500-yard freestyle, earning honorable-mention AllAmerica honors. She was also a championship finalist at the 1993 World University Games in Buffalo, N.Y. Diez-Walker was also named the top female scholar-athlete in the nation following the 1993-94 academic year based on her athletic and academic accomplishments (a perfect 4.00 grade-point average). The former April Diez was named Female Swimmer of the Year following the 1995 Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships after winning the 1,650 free, 200 free, 500 free and 400 individual medley (setting an NAU record in the process). A native of Phoenix, she earned her degree in sociology at NAU, completed law school at the University of California, Berkeley, before moving back to Phoenix.

A 2007 graduate of NAU, Alexis Buckley was the first female swimmer in 12 years to participate in the NCAA Championships when she qualified as a junior in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:27.12, second only to All-American April Diez’s time of 16:18.13. Buckley was the first NAU swimmer to earn a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) title, garnering two of them since the Lumberjacks joined the WAC in 2004-05. As a junior, Buckley won the 1,650 freestyle at the WAC Championships and as a senior she set a school-record time of 4:23.73 en route to winning her second title in the 400 individual medley. At the 2006 NCAA Championships, Buckley placed 19th in the 1,650 freestyle and 33rd in the prelims of the 500 freestyle.

Pam Rogers, a 2007 NAU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, was the Head Coach for the swimming and diving program from 1983-96, and also the first coach of the program. Rogers won five Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference titles during her tenure and was responsible for the addition of the men’s program, which also won five conference titles. Rogers was the first woman in the sport of swimming and diving to be the head coach of a combined men’s and women’s Division I team. The team finished 29th at the 1994 NCAA Championships behind All-American April Diez’s performance in the 500 freestyle and the mile. Rogers coached 39 women’s conference champions in individual events and 47 Golden Eagle Scholar Athletes. She was a four-time All-American, a two-time national champion and an alternate for the U.S. Olympic Team in 1976, and went on to coach ASU to two national and four conference titles.

NAU: WHERE THE WORLD TRAINS The Wall Aquatic Center, home to the NAU swimming and diving program, is a prominent training facility for would class athletes, which have included several national teams from around the world, American gold-medal swimmers like Gary Hall Jr. and Anthony Ervin, as well as World and Olympic champion Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe and four-time Olympic gold medalist and Japanese swimmer Kosuke Katajima. Katajima trained in Flagstaff prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympics and went on to win gold medals in both the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke. As Katajima said to Swimming Technique magazine, “Whenever I come here (to Flagstaff), I always improve my time.” Flagstaff works for an Olympic gold medalist; just imagine what it can do for you. Living and training in an environment such as Flagstaff, at an elevation of 7,000 feet above sea level, provides many benefits to athletes and coaches in pursuit of peak performances. Unlike the international teams which only come to Flagstaff for relatively short altitude training camps, the athletes at Northern Arizona University enjoy the benefits of long-term exposure to altitude. Although not researched in depth, anecdotal evidence suggests that the benefits of living and training at a significant elevation result in long-term improvement of athletic performance. Crucial to Sophie Pascoe, the world paralympic record holder in the 200 butterfly the success of our athletes is an application of years of knowledge and continual who won six medals at the 2012 London games, trained in Flagstaff the learning from the best coaches in the world, who visit NAU regularly for altitude trainlast two years. Pcitured: Pascoe (right) with her coach Roly Critchon ing cycles. The development of a “need to rest or ready to work” baseline test set has (left) and NAU sophomore swimmer Meagan Morrison (center). helped fine-tune the science of swimming at NAU. Being smart about the timing, duration and intensity of work has resulted in NAU swimmers going to the NCAA Championships in events ranging from the 50 freestyle to the mile. Smart, scientific, efficient training with a common goal of improved performance over the long haul is challenging, but the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona University are primed to meet the challenge. In 2012, 152 athletes from 22 countries who trained in Flagstaff competed in the Olympics or Paralympics. HYPO2 Sport Management worked with athletes in swimming and track & field that desired to train at high altitude in NAU’s world-class facilities. In swimming, 11 Olympians and eight Paralympians that trained in Flagstaff brought back medals from London in representing six different countries. Tunisian Olympian Oussama Mellouli brought home gold in the Men’s 10 k Open water while four Paralympians earned gold, three of them earning multiple gold medals. New Zealand Paralympian Sophie Pascoe led the medal charge with three Golds and three Silvers. The complete list of 2012 swimming medalists that trained in Flagstaff:
