CAUCHI The Cauchi surname in Malta and abroad A research project highlighting the Greater Malta concept

by Mark Caruana April 2011

This brief study is dedicated to Prof Maurice Cauchi of Gharb Gozo[Malta] in appreciation of a tangible joint outcome to the oral history publication of Guzepp Camenzuli Ta’ Jodros and to Maurice Cauchi’s pivotal role as the Founder of the Malta Migration Virtual Museum.

Historical Aspects AUSTRALIA 1819-1940 The first Cauchi in Australia was the convict Francesco Chauci (alias Giuseppe Cauchi). He was one of 369 convicts transported on the Dromedary on the 11 September 1819. Giuseppe Cauchi (written Chauchi) was convicted in Malta for a term of seven years, together with the ship’s captain, Salvatore Diacono who was sentenced for 14 years. The charge was the alleged sinking of a ship in a fraudulent claim on insurance purposes. 1912 NAME

USA Background From 1892 to 1924, more than 22 million immigrants, passengers and crew came through Ellis Island and the Port of New York. The ship companies that transported these passengers kept detailed passenger lists, called "ship manifests." Now, thanks to the generous efforts of volunteers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, these manifests have been transcribed into a vast electronic archive, which I have searched to identify the Cauchi immigrants to America. From this huge database, a search of the surname Cauchi listed 46 entries. Of these, 5 were crew members of Maltese nationality and one of Greek nationality. One Cauchi passenger was of Hungarian nationality (written as Magyar) born in Citta Nichia Malva who arrived in Ellis Island in 1906. Another was born in Nantes France and one Cauchi was of Italian background born in Terranova Sicily. The remaining 38 were Malta-born. 3 mothers embarked from Portsmouth England. 1. 2. 3.

One was a Rose Cauchi from Southampton who travelled with her son Albert aged 8 and her daughter Giovanna aged 5 and arrived on the 3 June 1924. The second mother was a Cauchi Angela from Portsmouth who travelled with their child Elizabeth aged 4 months. The third mother was a Giuseppina Cauchi, Malta-born aged 23 who travelled with her daughter Paolina aged 8 and arrived in Ellis Island on the 2 March 1919.

There are nearly twice as many Cauchi surnames in the southern Sicilian port-city of Gela alone, than in all the other towns in mainland Italy. The maritime city of Gela also has a relatively high number of Cauchi hyphenated surnames. The Cauchi’s in mainland Italy could possibly be former residents of Gela who sought better employment opportunities in the industrial areas of northern Italy, such as Milan and Turin. In his book “The Malta Language Question – a case study in cultural imperialism” Geoffrey Hull states that “ the GelaCaltanisetta-Agrigento axis appears to be the source of most of the oldest Maltese surnames”.

It is of interest to note that four of the hyphenated surnames in the city of Gera namely Cauchi Costa and Cauchi Vella, would be indistinguishable from present day hyphenated Maltese surnames.
