NEWSLETTER August 2012

The Latest News & Announcements, Workshops, Updates and much more!

INSIDE: a special look at the new magazine CLICK from Clickin Moms!

Hello friends! The long, lazy days of summer have come to a close -- and believe it or not -- the school bells have started to chime once again. A busy time of year for us all is about to kick in! It’s a time of tradition and a time of learning, a time of togetherness and a time to give thanks. And as we recollect our own mental snapshots from the carefree summer months, we start furiously booking appointments to begin capturing and documening this new phase for our clients. The wide-eyed expressions of young children heading back to school illustrate the excitement and anticipation of this time of year – a whole school year older and an adventure-filled summer wiser. Speaking of older and wiser…. our August member spotlight features a photographer who specializes in Senior photography. Meg Borders first picked up a camera after the birth of her first child, as she yearned to capture every moment of her baby’s life – and she hasn’t looked back since! Combining her two passions – photography and working to increase the self- esteem of young women – Meg’s work focuses on the Senior Portrait through her eponymous business, Meg Borders Photography. She aims to photograph women from a perspective that allows their true beauty to shine, often leading to self-discovery and a rise of self-confidence. As a wife and mother of three (her youngest is under six months!), Meg’s story is honest and truly inspiring.

ased in Washington state, Meg Borders has made

herself a fixture among today’s senior photographers. Her portfolio ranges from light and whimsical, to bold and strong, with each image displaying a beautiful sense of detail and presence. Her two passions – photography and working to increase the self- esteem of young women – are always evident throughout Meg’s work. This month we are proud to bring you a small sneak peak at the wonderful Meg Borders!

Tell us your story. How you started and how your photography, brand, and business transformed over the last few years... I am a wife, a mother, a daughter, and a lover of beauty. I live in Eastern Washington with with my husband and my beautiful daughters who mean the world to me. Like so many other women, my story starts with the birth of my first baby. This new little tiny creation was so perfect, pure, and innocent. I knew I had to do everything in my power to capture her every moment, in perfect clarity. I didn’t want to forget a minute of her life. I have always been a lover of beautiful imagery, but when I picked up a camera and realized I could capture the beauty that I saw in the world and make it my own, I was hooked! After a couple years of honing my camera and editing skills I opened up for business in 2009 and haven’t looked back. Capturing beauty for other 09 | NAPCP

people, the way I see it, is more than a job for me. Its more than the money, its more than the title, its my way of giving back to people. There is something so incredible about seeing a client’s face light up when they see themselves in my images. I love sharing this gift with others. I treasure the relationships that I build and the people I meet along the way on this journey. It’s one of the greatest perks of this job! It isn’t uncommon for clients to turn into dear friends, and for that, I am so grateful. How did you get started in working with Seniors? What do you love most about photographing them? I have been working with teen girls since I was a teen myself. As a teen I was a leader in my local church youth group, when I was in my early 20’s I NAPCP

worked with teen girls at an Eating Disorder Treatment center, and shortly after graduated with my bachelors in psychology with aspirations of becoming a counselor for troubled girls. I’ve always had a passion for this age group, so when I picked up a camera it didn’t take long for me to realize that the Senior Portrait market was where I wanted to be. I am passionate about the self-esteem of women and the pressures they face in today’s society. I want to show young women a new perspective of who they are, and to see themselves in a way they never have. The media has morphed and distorted the standard of what beauty is and made it something that is unattainable. It’s a fraud. As photographers we know how easy it is to liquify someone, smooth their skin, and get rid of imperfections. We can draw on six pack abs in a matter of minutes. There is nothing cooler to me than when I show a senior girl her photos for the first time (even if its on the back my camera) and you see their eyes light up and you watch their selfconfidence rise. I love showing women their true beauty. In the end it isn’t the 8×10 or 20×30 canvas I sell them, its self-discovery. 11 | NAPCP

There is a growing rise of Senior Photographers out there. What piece of advice would you give to those starting out or are interested in pursuing this? I am big believer in Senior Rep Programs. I think having a solid Senior Rep Program is vital to becoming a contender in your local senior market. Who has been your your biggest inspiration in your work? When I am looking for inspiration I often look internally. I envision things, mostly while driving in the car (my only time to think straight as a mother of three little ones). I find a way to capture them in real life whether it be a scene, a pose, or a lighting scenario. I like to have a final image in my head before I even start a shoot. 13 | NAPCP

How do you balance photography, mentoring, and life with 3 kids?! I struggle daily with finding the balance between mom and photographer. My compass is to remember that above anything else, my husband and children are my priority. With that core value underlying everything I do, I then make photography work in and around it. What is your typical schedule like with your family and business? We want to hear about it all! I try my best to be “all in” when I am being mom and “all in” when I am in work mode. Right now I have a nanny that comes to me one full day a week. I schedule this day out with client meetings, a huge list of “to

do’s”, and lots of editing. I work as hard as I can for 8 hours straight and then work on day to day business tasks (email/follow ups/editing) during nap time the other days during the week. When I am with my kids, my goal is to be 100% present with them and not worrying about anything business related. I do not work in the evenings with the exception of shoots. That is my time to relax and unwinde. If I don’t schedule in “me” time, everything starts falling apart. Who are some of your favorite vendors? ProDPI, Design Aglow, Kelly Moore bag, StickyAlbums, and Kraft and Jute What are some of your best selling products? How do you market them & why do you think your clients gravitate towards them the most? My best selling products are canvases and albums. Why? Because I rave about them and show them. I let the clients see, touch, and feel the product. They NAPCP

start to envision themselves in my sample products and therefore that is what they end up purchasing. My goal is for every client to have a piece of art on their wall, an album on their coffee table, and their images digitally to show their friends and family. Where do you see yourself in 2 years, Meg?! In 10 years? In both scenarios I see myself following my dreams and passions, producing images that inspire people, and making a difference in others’ lives. To see more of Meg’s work, please visit her site here, and her blog here!

Thank you so much Meg! 19 | NAPCP

TIPS OF THE MONTH BY MEG BORDERS

21 | NAPCP

Newsletter August 2012

1) Let who you are shine through your work. It’s easy to look to someone else’s work or style, compare yourself, and feel less than adequate. Don’t be afraid to be you and let that be enough. 2) Take the time to make real connections with your clients. Incorporate client consultations into your workflow if you don’t already. The connections you make with your clients will translate into your images. 3) Follow your dreams and take risks and put yourself out there. The rewards will far outweigh how scary it may seem at the time.
