By Seth DuChene EDITOR If film photography is a dying art, there’s at least one who’s doing his part to keep it alive. With a portable dark-

Tamworth students ditch digital, try film room in tow, Andrezej Maciejewski of the Out In The Sticks Studio in Yarker was giving Tamworth Elementary School Grade 6-8s a crash-course in old-fashioned black-and-white photography, complete with photo paper, chemicals and — compared to digital photography — patience. The week-long course was provided in connection with the Ontario Arts Council's Artists in Education program. Through the program, the OAC provides Maciejewski with a grant for six such class projects each year. Maciejewski says he’s been providing the course for 12 years.

On Tuesday, the students were experimenting with pinhole cameras. The cameras would be taken outside, and the paper would be exposed from anywhere between 30 seconds and four minutes, depending on the available light and cloud cover. Then, the camera would be brought back to Maciejewski for processing. Using a large wooden ‘darkroom’, Maciejewski would take the paper and begin developing the negative. The portable darkroom provides Maciejewski with the ability to take his film photography into class-

rooms, although the entire process must be done by touch. Besides the paper and chemicals, the only things inside the box are Maciejewski's gloved hands to ensure no light from outside can ruin the process. However, a red light and some eye scopes allow students to watch Maciejewski at work — even though Maciejewski himself can’t see what he’s doing. Maciejewski admits that, with the advent of digital photography, it's becoming more and more difficult to get the materials he needs in order to do traditional film photography.
