BROADCAST NEWS GRANTS
AAJA's mission is to encourage Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) to enter the ranks of journalism, work for fair and accurate coverage of AAPIs, and promote increasing the number of AAPI journalists and news managers in the industry.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM AAJA will award two Broadcast News Grants supporting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders pursuing journalism careers in broadcasting, an industry where AAPIs continue to be underrepresented. The 2012 grants are: One internship grant in the amount of $500 is in honor of the late Sam Chu Lin, who was among the first Asian American male reporters on network television. This grant is open to males and females in television or radio.
One scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to an aspiring male television broadcaster from the Lloyd LaCuesta Scholarship Fund. LaCuesta is a veteran KTVU TV/Cox Communications broadcast journalist, former AAJA national president, and currently a national board member of UNITY: Journalists of Color.
Applicants must be full-time college students or recent college graduates. Applicants must have already secured a 2012 summer internship before applying for the internship grants. The stipend is to be used toward living expenses or transportation. AAJA membership is encouraged for all applicants and required for those selected. To apply for membership online, go to www.aaja.org. The selected awardees will also be assigned a professional journalist through the AAJA Broadcast Mentor Program. Applications must be received no later than May 11, 2012.
TO APPLY Submit three complete, collated sets (one original, two copies) of the following materials. Faxes will not be accepted. Use paper clips, not staples when preparing your application. 1) APPLICATION FORM 2) ESSAY QUESTION: In 200 words, state why you want to pursue a career in broadcast journalism, what you hope to gain from the experience, and why AAJA's mission is important to you. 3) LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION: One copy should be an original, three may be copies. 4) RÉSUMÉ: Single-sided, 8.5”x11” white paper. 5) PROOF OF AGE: Please submit a photocopy of driver’s license, passport or birth certificate. Must be 18 years old to participate. 6) STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL NEED: Please type out a short statement justifying financial need. 7) INTERNSHIP VERIFICATION: If you have secured an internship, please include a copy of your internship acceptance letter or other verification documents.
