Battle of Trekkopje centenary: Visitors from afar...

“Landless” Namibians were overwhelmed with joy, after Affirmative Repositioning activists, Job Amupanda, George Kambala and Dimbulukeni Nauyoma, on a media conference in Windhoek on Thursday, and through a media statement later, indicated that the Municipality of Henties Bay had allocated erven to “121 young professional and landless Namibians.” They also reportedly alleged that they had received “their official letters of offer from the Henties Bay Municipality three days earlier, expressing their delight. The town’s Management Committee Chairperson, Councillor Michael Skini, told namib times that the munici-

pality had received 121 applications for erven, but stressed the fact that no erven had been allocated to applicants, yet. Skini says Mr Amupanda and his two friends did apply for erven, as any Namibian is entitled to do. He has indicated that only four of the erven were applied for under

the Affirmative Repositioning movement. “Meanwhile, one of these four applicants were disqualified, after it came to light that the individual already owns land in another area,” Skini remarked. He told namib times yesterday that all applications for land will be dealt with in the same

fashion and the correct procedures will be followed. He says only a few erven are currently available in Henties Bay and thus, the municipality has applied for the establishment of a new extension in the town, which has already been approved by the line ministry, though it

will take some time to get this new extension prepared and ready. The municipal erven will sell at N$350 per square meter and the sizes vary from 500700 square meters. He says applications are forwarded to the town’s Council, and if approved it will be advertised in the media, in

order to see if any objections are made. If no objections are forwarded, the applications will be subjected to ministerial approval. Only when approved then, the applicant will be asked for a 10% deposit. The other 90% is due when the erven are transferred on the applicant’s name.

The big day is almost here and reality is sinking in as performing artists of the 2015 Namibia Annual Music Awards (NAMAs) are expected to arrive in Swakopmund today. To familiarise themselves with the setting of the venue, the performing artists will arrive earlier than expected. The famous Gazza, Blossom, Nianell and Riana Nell, Diop, Bullet Ya Kaoko, Uhu-

ru, Araffath, Mr Makoya, D-Naff, Exit and Blacksheep, who are on the Friday line-up, will be roaming the streets of Swakopmund from today. The Nominated Artists will depart from Windhoek on Friday.

The Executive Chairman of the NAMAs, Mr Tom Ekandjo says “people around the World can watch both the Friday’s and Saturday’s Blue Carpets and Main Award Ceremonies live via live stream, by logging into

www.mtcnama.mobi compatible on all types of devices online and the web through any internet enabled device, computer, tablet or mobile phone handset.” According to Ekandjo, the Friday night Blue Carpet live stream will Continues on page 2

theme ‘Challenges of the Growth-at–Home-Strategy’. The minister focused on the Government’s philosophy and strategy regarding promoting domestic and foreign investment and investment incentives, and their resolute determination to achieve Growth at Home. He referred to development projects for Erongo over the next three years and said he trusted that the local business community would be fully participating in the supply chains involved with those major projects. “The value of development projects funded over the medium-term expenditure framework for the period 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2018 in the Erongo Region amounts to N$36.8 billion. This includes a small component of 1,6% which is to be funded outside the Budget. Of this amount, N$2.6 billion is earmarked for projects in the Erongo Region. It represents the third largest allocation to all regions, namely 7% of the value of all projects.” The projects costs include the new road between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay at N$1.3 billion, the Karibib-UsakosSwakopmund Road Upgrade at N$747 million, farm land purchases in Erongo for land reform at N$592 million, upgrading of the existing Swakopmund-Walvis road at N$537 million, the Walvis Bay airports upgrade at N$447 million, the Namibian Navy headquarters in Walvis Bay at N$396 million, Namibian Air Force headquarters at Karibib at N$348 million, a Desalination plant at Swakopmund at N$172 million, the upgrade of the Swakopmund-Henties bay-Kamanjab road at N$156 million, a testing and inspection centre for the NSI at Walvis Bay at N$137 million, the service of residential erven at Henties Bay- N$124

million, and the railway network upgrading in Erongo. The minister said the Growth-at-Home strategy reinforced the importance of accelerating economic growth, reducing income inequality and increasing employment, as approved by the Cabinet and eventually ratified by Parliament in 2012. “It is a strategy adopted by Government for implementing Namibia’s first industrial Policy and for attaining the strategic intervention objectives for manufacturing as outlined in NDP4. Three strategic interventions serves as a holistic frame for policy. Firstly, the interventions are to support value addition, upgrading economic diversification through a needs oriented and comprehensive approach to industrial development and structural transformation of the Namibian economy towards more productive economic activities. Secondly, interventions are planned to promote market access at home and abroad to stimulate the development of local industries and create conditions that will boost Namibian exports on international markets. Increasing the competiveness and capacity of Namibian firms through improved variety and quality of local products and enhanced productivity and efficiency are also in the top of the Governments priority list. Thirdly, there are interventions that are aimed at promoting a favourable investment and business climate. The reforms cover industrial investment and business climate. The reforms cover industrial infrastructure, the review of the SME Policy, legislative amendments to the Foreign Investment Act and the Export Processing Zones Act, the redesign of registration processes for businesses and intellectual property rights, and

the establishment of a regular Public Private Dialogue Platform. “ The minister says there is evidence that foreign investment can have both positive and negative effects, and a major objective development policy is to maximise the positive aspects whilst minimising the negative ones, so that on balance there is a significant benefit. Experience shows foreign investments play a positive role, the government must have the right and powers to regulate the terms of their entry and operations. “This is exactly the philosophy that the Government will adopt with the reform of the Foreign Investment Act into a more flexible approach by reviewing both domestic and foreign investment proposals against the national interest caseby-case. As envisaged in the new Namibian Investment Bill, the Namibian Investment Centre (NIC) will work with an applicant to ensure the national interest is protected. If it is determined that the proposal is contrary to the national interest, it will not be approved. “The Bill also makes provisions for certain economic activities that are reserved for the Namibian Government and the Namibian private sector. The Bill is flexible in that the Minister may issue Regulation to prioritise specific industries and the terms of conditions to which industries must comply. The government also recognises community concerns about foreign ownership of certain Namibian assets. The review system allows the Government to consider these concerns when assessing Namibia’s national interests. “We look forward to finalise the Bill soon and to interact with the private sector on the intention and consequences of the Bill”. The Minister has also

focused on the pros and cons of investment incentives. He says Namibia offers both tax and non-tax incentives to existing and new manufacturing enterprises after having registered as manufacturers. Firms in the EPZ regime are exempt from paying import duties and VAT on machinery, equipment and raw materials import for manufacturing purposes. They are also exempt from paying corporate income tax. Referring to a study conducted in 2013, he says it confirms that the availability of natural resources, the attractiveness of the Namibian market in terms of political stability and certainty of Government policies has played a key role in attracting FDI to Namibia. He says, given this, the Government has commenced reviewing the current Export Processing Zone (EPZ) regime, and if required, to replace it with alternatives that are more effective and less costly. “In this regard, the Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development and the Ministry are working jointly on a customised incentive regime that will stimulate the Namibian economy in the most effective way. The Minister says the Namibian budget is funded 97% through own revenue, and 1 and a half percent is through grants and donors. “We are the masters of our destiny,” was the message with which he concluded. On Saturday the Minister also visited some operations of the Ministry of Finance at the Walvis Bay harbour, which included the Customs and Excise office.

(Pan Africa, Europe), Pearl Hart, the Managing Director of Soundcity (Nigeria, Pan Africa, Europe), the Managing Director of 1Music, Fami Olagbaiye, Tim Ekandjo, Chief Human Capital and Corporate Affairs officer MTC (Namibia) and

many others in the Music Industry. The conference is limited to 500 attendees and will take place on the fourth floor at the Swakopmund Indoor Sports Centre on Friday morning from 09:00 to 10:30.

There are only two days to the 5 Namibia Annual Music Awards (NAMAs) evening that everyone has been dying to see. The NAMAs is scheduled for 1 and 2 May and is expected to bring a lot of visitors to the holiday resort, Swakopmund. A couple of months ago, Swakopmund won the battle against Ongwediva, to be the host of the NAMAs 2015. In order to raise funds for the NAMAs, the Swakopmund Municipality organised a NAMAs fundraising gala dinner which took place on Saturday evening at the Amphitheatre, in the dunes which is about eight kilometres south of Swakopmund. They invited the business community to invest in the event and take part in the networking, raising aware-

ness about the event and to provide exposure to Swakopmund as an investment destination. The evening was outstanding and the people showed up as expected. The amount of money made during the fundraising gala dinner will still be announced by the Swakopmund Municipality once they are done with all calculations. Many companies, including Namport, Standard Bank of Namibia, NACOMA and more pledged their financial support on the evening.

“Stokkies is tuis!” Hartseerverhaal kry gelukkige einde

My hart was gebreek.

Ek kry trane in my oë elke keer as ek na haar kyk. Dit is ongelooflik. Battle of Trekkopje Centenary Celebrations It was a very special moment for the sisters, Kim Webster and Kara McGeachy, both from Aberdeen in Scotland – a moment of sadness that their grandmother would never know what they've done, but also a moment of deep pride for them, to represent the whole family of Alexander Lambie, their great-grandfather. He was one of a handful of soldiers from both sides, who perished on 26 April 1915, in the Battle of Trekkopje, and who found his last resting place at the battle site. Kara's husband, Kevin, wrote on the Battle of Trekkopje Facebook page, “ My wife's Great Grandfather is the Private A Lambie buried in the middle of the front row of British graves. These photographs have

started a major crusade among our family to find out the full story of Alexander's journey from Glasgow, Scotland, to his death while mopping as the Germans retreated from Trekkopje. A journey that included British army service in India and South Africa before he settled and married in Transvaal in the early 1900s. Thank you.” The “major crusade” ended at Private Lambie's

gravesite – together with more than a hundred people, under which Representatives of Veterans Organisations and Representatives of serving servicemen and –women, they remembered the day, a hundred years ago, when German Schutztruppe soldiers and a combined Union Defence Force/ Commonwealth Force clashed at Trekkopje, about 85 km NE of Swakopmund.

Their great-grandfather served in the 2nd Kimberley Regiment. The South African Brigade under Major Skinner also consisted of the 2nd Transvaal Scottish, as well as an armoured car squadron, a total of 900 guns, of whom 8 soldiers died and 34 were wounded. The battle of Trekkopje`s claimed the lives of 14 German soldiers, 14 wounded and 13 were captured. According to the National Chairman of The Memorable Order of Tin Hats, Namibia Command Headquarters Johan Knoetze, this Battle led directly to the German troops’ surrender, a few months later after the Battle of Otavi . He thanked organisations like the Kriegsgraber Verband, the commonwealth Wargraves Commision and every individua l th a t ke e p s our Heritage in tack, and saving it for future generations.

Con artists take to social network for easy cash A 30-year-old Namibian man landed behind bars after he defrauded a person who was interested in buying a car he had advertised on the ‘Buy and Sell’ Facebook page. The man lured his victim by offering a car at an affordable price before requesting a down-payment on the vehicle to be paid to a third party. The seller, who did not add a picture of the supposed vehicle for sale (a blue VW Golf 4) on the Facebook page, then allegedly sent a picture of the car via the social networking platform, WhatsApp. The requested selling price for the car remains unknown. The con artist requested

a deposit of N$6 000, but since the car was apparently not in Windhoek, an arrangement was reached that the client would fetch the car from Mariental. The Senior Superintendent of the City Police, Gerry Shikesho told Nampa on Friday the suspect requested the client to pay the money to a third person in Windhoek, who will then give them a parcel of ‘livestock medicine’ to take along to Mariental. The unsuspecting client

paid the money, collected the ‘parcel’ and left for Mariental to fetch the car. The supposed seller was however nowhere to be found upon his arrival in Mariental, as his telephone was switched off. Becoming suspicious, the client went to the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) office at Mariental, where the parcel was opened, only to find newspapers and a bottle of liquid wrapped in the ‘medicine parcel’. Upon his return to Windhoek, the victim

approached the City Police in Windhoek and a trap for the con artist was successfully set. Upon his arrest, the suspect claimed it was the first time that he was involved in the scheme, adding that he merely operated as a middle man. His duties, he claimed, were to collect the cash from unsuspecting clients and take it to a house in Katutura. He said the man behind the scam is apparently operating his business from within the con-

fines of prison. The suspect also denied any knowledge of who places the advertisements on Facebook, arguing that doing so does not fall within true ambit of his ‘duties’. The City Police once again warned the public to refrain from getting involved in questionable deals that could result in con artists robbing them off their hard earned cash. Shikesho warned people, especially those who are desperate for a bargain, to refrain

from paying any money to a person that is not known to them. “They (the con artists) even enquire when the money is paid into a bank account or in most cases NamPost. They then withdraw the money and switch off their cellular phones,” Shikesho said. ‘Stop making deals in the corridors or in the field, rather go to a credible business or get the police involved,’ he noted. The superintendent called on anyone looking

for a deal on the social networking sites to rather consult the local newspaper’s small advertisement sections. The suspect is expected to make his first court appearance by today. In January namib times also alerted readers to the wheelings and dealings of a man who tried to rob people of their money through false advertising of cars, and by charging carriage up-front. NAMPA

Namibia Film Commission public meeting...a success Sharlien Tjambari The Namibia Film Commission (NFC) had a consultation meeting on the Namibia Film Regulatory Authority (FRAN) Draft Bill, on Saturday, at the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre. The Namibia Film Commission is in the process of amending the current NFC Act which has many limitations to the development of the local film industry. The Bill will provide for the establishment of the Namibia Film Regulatory Authority as a state-owned enterprise. The NFC invited everyone who has an interest in filming to attend and requested

the inputs from all stakeholders and public at large. The participants included film makers from the coast, both cast and crew, plus four film production companies which were Magic Touch Film, Namib Films, Dune 7 Production and Hard Work Film Production. According to the Chairperson of the Namibia Film Commission, Obed Emvula, the stakeholders and interested

participants brought up some important suggestions which might be useful for the Bill. Under the suggestions were the registration of film makers with the Namibia Film Commission and how they should go about doing so. Most of the film makers in Namibia are seemingly not aware of the procedures. How the film industry contributes to the economy

Poverty in Nam declined between 2001 and 2011 Poverty in Namibia declined by 11 per cent between 2001 and 2011. A report on poverty mapping in Namibia released by the National Planning Commission (NPC) on Friday revealed that the national incidence of poverty declined from 37,9 per cent to 26,9 per cent over this period. According to the report, of the country's 2,3 million people, about 570 000 are poor. “This indicates a total number of 125 277 fewer people living in poverty at the end of this period of 10 years than would have been the case if the poverty rate had remained unchanged,” the report noted. The greatest declines were registered in the northern regions of Ohangwena, Omusati, Kunene and Oshikoto, as well as the eastern region of Omaheke. However, two regions (Zambezi and Khomas) registered increases of 7,2 percentage points and 1,2 percentage points respectively. In 2011, seven regions (Otjozondjupa, Oshikoto, Omusati, Ohangwena, Kunene, Zambezi and Kavango) had poverty incidences above 26,9 per cent. In both the 2011 and 2001 reports, Ohangwena, Kunene, Zambezi, Oshikoto and Kavango had more than one third of their population classified as poor.

The report states that changed, with Kavango poverty in Namibia still being the poorest region bears a distinct rural face, followed by Oshikoto, with the poorest regions Zambezi, Kunene and being those in which the Ohangwena. majority of the population Over the 2001 to 2011 period, the Omusati Relives in rural areas. The participants who attended the meeting and the team from the Namibia Film Commission also came into focus, and one of the participants also stressed the importance of growth within the Namibia Film Industry. Mr Emvula said he was very impressed with the meeting. The Namibia Film Regulatory Authority

aims to promote Namibia as a location for photography and film production on the international market; attracting film producers and producers and photographers to facilitate their initiatives to carry out film production in Namibia; encour-

age film producers to employ or make use of Namibian personnel and facilities for film production; developing the film industry and establishing relationships with any local or international people, who may contribute to the development and

promotion of the film industry in Namibia. The Namibian Film Commission falls under the Ministry of Information Communication and Technology (MICT) and the Draft Bill is available at the MICT offices countrywide.

“Vaccination, a gift for life”- African Vaccination week

Namibia is commemorating the African Vaccination Week (AVW) this week, under the theme “Vaccination, a gift for life”. The initiative was designed to strengthen public awareness and the demand for immunisation by communities, improve access for high-risk populations and hard to reach areas in Namibia. This year's theme underlines the fact that vaccination is a gift that protects people of all ages against diseases. Vaccines are one of the greatest advances in human history because they save millions of lives each year and are among the most cost-effective health interventions ever developed. The AVW aims to ensure that every child is vaccinated to improve their health and to prevent common childhood diseases in the future. It is estimated that about three million children under the age of five die each year in the African region and a significant number of these deaths could be prevented by vaccines. Routine immunisations are essential to attain the highest standard of health, particularly for women and children to become healthy productive adults. The AVW complements the efforts of the Ministry of Health and Social Services in order to accelerate Namibia's achievements of the Millennium Development Goal 4, the reduction of child mortality by two thirds, by 2015 from the level in 1990. According to the representative of World Health Organisation (WHO) Dr Islam, vaccines are among the 21st century's most successful, cost

effective, high impact and most long-lasting for prevention of disease, disability and death. “Supporting routine immunisation during the AVW therefore leads to healthy communities and progress towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal 4,” Islam urges. Although countries in the African region have made commendable progress in reducing vaccine- preventable diseases, there is still more to be done. The WHO calls upon the Government of Namibia to translate the recently endorsed WHO Regional Immunisation Strategic Plan 2014-2020 into National priorities and actions as it aims to provide universal access to immunisation as well as other life-saving interventions for everyone by 2020, particularly to vulnerable populations. The AVW was endorsed by the 60th session of the WHO Regional Committee in September 2010 and came into effect 2011. The week provides an opportunity to strengthen immunisation services and systems through advocacy, education communication tools and activities. The goal of this initiative is to strengthen the immunisation programmes by drawing attention to and increasing awareness of the importance of every person's, particularly every child and woman's needs as well as rights to be protected from vaccine-preventable diseases including polio, tetanus, measles, whooping cough and diphtheria.

Obtaining Fishing

Permits

Werk vorder fluks by die Dunes Mall

Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations. WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Namibia concludes partnership agreement with EU Mavourlene Gaes

The minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernhard Esau announced at his annual fishing industry address recently that Namibia alongside other Southern African Customs Union member states concluded an Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Union.

Esau said this reciprocal agreement is World Trade Organisation (WTO) compliant and therefore does not have an expiry date. The agreement will allow Namibia to export fish and fisheries products to the EU, duty and quota free hence providing market access guarantees necessary for continued investment in the sector. “The agreement has been initialled and is

now undergoing routine legal scrubbing before being completed” he said. He further added that the Namibian Government is also in the process of negotiating various trade arrangements with several countries including Japan, Hong Kong, China, Nigeria, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa. Be part of Namibia's Stranding Network Madelaine Laubscher A workshop was held at the Walvis Bay Yacht Club focusing on Namibia's marine life and more specific, on how each individual can become part of the Stranding Network on Saturday morning, and received hands-on tips on how to respond to strandings. Dr Daniela Maldini of the Namibia Dolphin Project hosted the workshop. The community was invited to learn how to become part of the strandings network, which is a group of concerned residents that help to monitor the health of the Namibian coastline by reporting dead/live whale and dolphin strandings and collect important data on causes of death and potential human interactions. “All the strandings that have occurred near Walvis Bay since 2008 have been recorded by Dr Simon Elwen, who is the founder of the Namibian Dolphin Project. The strandings workshop have been made available by the World Wildlife Fund which is a specific fund dedicated to public outreach in order to increase awareness of wildlife in general. Hopefully there will be more of these fundings in the near future, because it is hard to come by,” she said. The workshop focused mostly on cetaceans (whales/dolphins), turtles and sunfish. “Our focus is particularly on the endemic Heavisides dolphin, the Bottle Nose dolphin, the Dusky dolphin, the Humpback whale, the Southern right whale and the Pygmy right whale. We attend to turtle strandings, collecting data for research. We give hands-on tips on how to respond to a live/dead stranding. When cetaceans strand, it means there is a definite problem, because they spend all their time in the water.

A seal spends some time on land to rest, therefore it is not always a sign for alarm. When a seal is stranded, it will be lying in an unusual manner or will look distressed/ sick. It is critical to understand the causes of the death and whether these causes could be an alarm in general. We get single and mass strandings. A mass stranding is when many animals of the same species are found together (alive) on shore. Mass strandings are not really scientifically understood yet. We do not know why seemingly healthy animals come to the beach at once. It is seen like an emergency. A term 'unusual mortalities' is used when many animals (not at the same time/day) strand, which could be due to pollution/disease. Understanding the causes of a stranding is therefore very important. Tide changing plays a huge role in Namibia regarding strandings. A shortage of fish can also cause starvation that leads to stranding. We are concerned with humanrelated mortalities such as noise pollution or pollution in general. Some sounds can damage their ears. Strandings should be reported immediately, because the carcass's colour can change, which makes it hard to determine the species. Data has to be collected. The sooner the data is collected the better it is to determine why the animal stranded,” she said. Dr Maldini showed the group that attended, the difference between male and female cataceans and how to tell different species apart from each

other. “You need to know what to look for. We want individuals to learn how to respond to these strandings. Staff members of the Namibian Dolphin Project teach interested individuals how to recognise different whale/dolphin species found in Namibia. We explain how to collect important information and who to call for help and what the data is usually used for. We train as many people along the coastline as possible and create a large monitoring network of people that care about whales/dolphins of Namibia.” A demonstration was done on how to help a whale/dolphin that has stranded. “Cetaceans have been poorly studied in Namibian waters. The Namibian Dolphin Project is a non-profit, research and conservation organisation run by several scientists in association with the University of Pretoria's Mammal Research Institute and the Namibia Nature Foundation. Our mission is to research Namibia's cetaceans to generate data on these populations that can be used for their conservation through sustainable management.” The team who held the workshop works with the community and policy makers, including Namibian NGO's, the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, along with the marine tourism industry to increase awareness and knowledge of Namibia's cetacean life. “Since 2008 the NDP has generated new information on the abundance, ecological relationships and conservation status of whales and dolphins in Namibia's waters as well as volunteers and students. We are concerned with the increasing number of human impacts threatening the environment. Only through research and awareness we hope

we can change this.” Anyone who finds a stranded catacean shoud first carefully turn the animal on its stomach if it is lying on its side. If the animal is alive, we must be contacted immediately as it is an emergency. If not alive, we must still be contacted as soon as possible because we need to study why the animal died. The individual who finds the animal must wait by the animal until we arrive. Try to keep the (live) animal calm and wet and covering it with a towel would be wise as their skin burns in the sun. The blow-hole must be kept closed/protected while the animal is kept wet. There were incidents in the past where tourists thought that the blow hole should be kept wet, however this causes the animal to drown. It breathes through the blow-hole so it should be covered while being kept wet so that water does not flow into the hole.” There are concerns in the waters. “Desalination plants have increased, industrial parks and large scale port-expansions. Mineral exploitation such as phosphate mining at sea and shore is a concern. Historic over-fishing and low recovery of many stocks has an unknown effect on cetaceans. Marine tourism (there are 27 boats operating in Walvis Bay) is a concern and climate change plays a role.” Individuals can support Namibian students by providing bursaries to undertake post graduate research on marine and mammal research. People can also support eductaion and outreach for the Namibian Dolphin Project Environm e n t a l O ff i c e a n d communtiy outreach programme. People can also research costs, equipment or services to continue monitoring Namibia's community of whales and dolphins.

Athletes make Namibia proud Athletics Namibia is very proud of their team that travelled all the way to Mauritius to compete at the second African Youth Championship (U/17). The competition took place over four days from 23 to 26 April and athletes from all over Africa were competing. The team consisted of five girls and two boys and was accompanied by Mr Hennie Horn as team leader / coach and Ms Mirinda Subes as his assistant; also doubling up as chaperone to the girls. They were well supported by the president of Athletics Namibia, Ms Alna Similo. If the results are any indication, then the future of athletics in Namibia is assured. The team did splendidly, bringing home one gold, one silver and three bronze medals. The results of the Namibian athletes are as follows: Henryke Garbers received a Bronze medal with her 3rd place in 400m girls in a time of 59.07 seconds, only .04 seconds away from the silver medal. Henryke also reached the final of the 400m hurdles. Siranda Horn received a silver medal, with a height of 1,68 meters in the girls high jump. Nico Horn received a bronze medal, 3rd place in javelin with a throw of 65,45 meters. Vizamuje Ujaha received a bronze medal – 3rd place high jump with a height of 1,98 meters Sylvia Schulz scooped up a gold medal in heptathlon, 1st place overall with 4733 points, surpassing her previous best of 4425 set at Stellenbosch earlier this

year. This is also a new African Youth record. The heptathlon consists of seven disciplines, both track and field and the competition is run over two days with four items the first day and three on the following day. Sylvia led from the start with several first place finishes. The first day, she had to compete at the 100m hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put, and 200m, while the second day's events consisted of Long Jump, Javelin and, finally, 800m. The remaining two athletes, Saara Martin and Eunike Kanana, both reached the finals in their respective events, but were unsuccessful. Several of the medal winners will still be in the Youth group next year while a few will have to move on to the Junior (U/19) group. There are bound to be several new faces coming forward next year and Athletics Namibia looks forward to continue working with the various coaches and especially the athletes. There are many talented young athletes in Namibia still to be discovered and developed and, if the success of this group is anything to go by, the future of athletics in Namibia seems rosy, indeed! Of the group of seven athletes, six will continue from the airport to compete at the COSASSA Games.
