hen we moved into our house three years ago one of the first things we did was convert the fifth bedroom into a home office and library. My husband installed floor to ceiling shelving that extends the length of the room. I furnished the space with an occasional chair, lamp, desk and prints from our travels. It is my favourite room in the house and one I spend many hours writing, researching and reading. A house should be just that - a reflection of the person you are. Compile a dream list as the first step of your renovation project. Note all of the rooms and changes you would love to make. An alfresco dining room, toy room, butler’s pantry, double shower, media room, open living space - discuss all of the possibilities that work for you and your family. Budgets are important and a major factor in any renovation but there is nothing stopping you from starting big and scaling down as your budget dictates. Warm welcome What better place to start than with the entryway to your home? It is, after all, the place visitors will form their first impressions. Clean and scrub tiled entrance ways, or consider laying timber decking for a unique look. Add some potted plants to inject colour into the area. Plant low-lying grass plants and greenery to create a welcoming environment. Re-stain, paint or even replace your front door if it has started to age. Finally, hang some artwork in the front hall or add an eye catching hutch, table or décor accessory.

3 Update your doors It’s as simple as it sounds – replace all of the door handles in your home with new ones. You’ll be surprised at the difference such a small project can make. Consider what type of door knobs you need. Are locks a necessity? Do you want brass, silver, polished, brushed or white handles? Be sure to buy enough to coordinate your entire home. While you are at it, update your kitchen, laundry and bathroom taps. Again, it’s an easy task but it will assist in modernising the room.

Light up the bathroom If there is one place you need good lighting, it is the bathroom. Head to your local lighting store and check out the range of pendant and mirror lighting before making your choice. Not only is pendant lighting in vogue, it is a great way to direct lighting into an area. Plus, it will make your bathroom memorable. Always have an electrician fit new lights.
Use a paint brush to apply paste to the corners and edges of the wall. However, use a roller for the rest of the wall.
Make your closet amazing Renovating to sell or simply updating for your own family? Either way, a contemporary walk-in-closet is a great addition. Sometimes, the smaller spaces in our homes are forgotten. Devote some time to updating and improving the functionality of your closet. Head to your local hardware store and purchase wire racks or shelving. They are easy to install and will create more storage space. Shoe racks are also a great idea as are storage wicker baskets.
Dress up a wall Hideous wallpapers of the 70s are making way for fashionable wall art. From geometric designs to muted floral patterns, the choices are endless. There are no rules when it comes to hanging wallpaper – everywhere from the laundry to the bedroom can be papered. Keep in mind you’ll need a couple of extra hands when hanging. It can be tricky but with patience, you’ll achieve the desired effect.

Create a beauty space If space allows transform a section of your closet or living space into a beauty area. Install a vanity table, chair, mirror and lighting. You’ll be able to find second hand mirrors that can be restored. For the handyman, or woman, track down an old table to sand back and repaint to achieve a vintage look. Shoe racks are also handy and storage baskets are great for storing blankets, accessories or winter clothes.

HOW TO PAINT WOODEN FLOORS
P
ainted wooden floors are making a comeback particularly with the clean, modern designs coming through from Scandinavia. White and cream are popular and create a neutral canvas to work with. Add a patterned floor rug or inject colour through furnishings to create a contemporary look. Be sure to do your research into the quality and colour of paint. There are plenty of options out there.
STEP TWO Vacuum and then scrub the floor with a blend of water and detergent or wood cleaner to remove any stains or dust. You must let the floors dry before doing anything further. This can take up to a couple of days. STEP THREE The next step is to apply a primer. Speak to a paint expert about what primer will work best for your floors. Allow the primer to dry overnight, or slightly longer if possible.
STEP ONE Sandpaper the floor surface thoroughly.
