nights and big energy bills in the cooler months – so we can enjoy homes better suited to summer. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Put on a performance

If you’re tackling a major renovation, you can save a lot of energy by sensible design – and that means being passive. Passive design means using natural sources of heating and cooling, rather than artif cial ones such as air-conditioners and heaters to warm and cool your home. Where to put certain rooms in your home, where to place windows and doors and how to angle the roof ine are all elements of passive design. Passive design will also look at the thermal mass of the building materials used. Thermal mass describes a material’s ability to

store and release heat. Concrete brick and tiles have high thermal mass because a lot of energy is needed to change the temperature of these materials. Lighter materials such have timber have a lower thermal mass. Getting the right mix of materials in your home can have a huge impact on its thermal performance. Insulating the walls, f oor and ceiling with products suitable to our climate is also vital to ensuring the best thermal performance. A huge amount of heat is lost from windows and glass doors. Some tips here to ensure your windows aren’t working against you in winter are to install blinds and curtains that you can open during the day to let the heat in and then close to keep it inside at night.

Consider installing double-glazed windows, which are much more eff cient than single panes. Large eaves and awnings over windows will protect the home from the harsh summer sun but allow winter sun to warm the interior.

Heating options

Even taking into account these design principles, you’ll probably want to incorporate some sort of heater into your home. Electric heaters are becoming more and more energy eff cient. Options include a reverse-cycle air-conditioner, which are good for heating large rooms on milder days. Portable electric heaters, such as column or fan heaters, are good for smaller rooms or when you want to heat a person or particular space – such as your reading chair or in

the home off ce. Fan and ceramic heaters warm up quickly, while oil or panel heaters take a little longer to get going. If you are building new rooms as part of your renovation, consider under-f oor heating. A good option for bathrooms or large tiled spaces, this type of heating warms thanks to electric cables or water pipes installed under the f oor. Even in our warm climate, don’t dismiss a wood-burning heater. If you have access to free f rewood, it’s an affordable way to keep warm. Besides, you can’t beat the romance of a f ickering f ame. For a f ame with a contemporary twist, ethanol f replaces look great. They heat fairly well too. Whatever you decide to do as part of your renovation, you don’t have to put up with the chill.

Laminate

A great choice for f ooring, laminate is not only affordable and easy to clean but comes in so many designs – it can mimic the look of timber, stone, concrete and tiles. Plus it can be installed quickly and by DIY renovators.

There are lots of materials you can use in your kitchen benches, f ooring, cupboards and splashbacks. We look at a few.

Natural stone

Man-made stone

Engineered stone is made from crushed stone bound with a polymer resin. It is an ideal work surface because its is easy to clean and will never need resealing. And because it’s engineered, this stone can be made to order for a seamless look.

Stainless steel

A great choice for benchtops and splashbacks, stainless steel is tough and hygienic – which is why its is favoured for commercial kitchens.

Granite (2), marble (1), limestone (3) and slate have been used for decades on the benches and f oors of kitchens, and while it looks beautiful the drawbacks of natural stone do deter some renovators. It can be an expensive option, and stone must be sealed so it does not stain. Marble is quite soft so isn’t a great option for kitchens.

The good old tile has been overlooked recently for more on-trend materials, but for a splashback or f ooring surface, tiles are still a great option. Like laminate the size and style of tiles seem almost endless, replicating different surfaces like stone and concrete.

Glass

A popular option for splashbacks, glass is also being used in shelves and benches as it is non-porous and easy to clean. Vibrant paint or wallpaper covered in glass create striking splashbacks.

Timber

Join the dark side

The lighting specialists are importers, wholesalers and retailers and have an incredible range of stock, and of course knowledge, about lighting. WWOL director Stephen Camilleri tells My Renovation, “Mum and Dad opened [the store] and it was just family working in the shop, and then we grew. We have close to 40 employees now.” He adds, “We started off just doing

Over the years we brought on different products – electrical solar and air-conditioning.” But lighting is a very consistent seller all year round, says Camilleri, who adds that, perhaps surprisingly, ceiling fans sell well all year too. “We sell ceiling fans just as much in winter as in summer. We are a large importer of ceiling fans. “A lot of people buy in winter for summer. It’s hard to get an electrician to install fans in summer.” As a local business WWOL is an important supplier to the region, but it

power, and as well as offering a huge range of product, WWOL takes its responsibility to be sustainable very seriously. Camilleri says there are “140 solar panels on the Currimundi building. We spend $140,000 a year on electricity. For us to put the solar up here is not just to cover our bills, we want to be greener. We are doing our bit.”

Banish winter chills The Housing Industry Association addresses the safety concerns of underf oor heating.

ome renovators may be concerned about the safety of electric underf oor heating. Electric underf oor heating had its origins in Scandinavia more than 60 years ago when it was seen as an ideal counter to the long, bitterly cold winters. The method is tried and tested – a current is passed through a cable, the resistance of the cable causes heat to generate. It is exactly the process that allows us to cook food on a kitchen hot-plate. When you spill water and other

liquids on these elements, there is no effect other than hissing and steam. That is because the heating element is earth-sheathed and well insulated from the working surface, eliminating the danger of an electric shock. The same is true for underf oor heating. However, underf oor cables do not even have to approach the temperatures necessary for hotplates in order to perform well, with thermostats generally set at no more than 40 degrees. This is

because the warm air is rising off a considerable surface area – the entire f oor – and tends to raise temperatures to a comfortable level quickly and evenly. Electric underf oor heating works most eff ciently in thick, solid f oors comprising concrete or brick. This is because the heat generated is stored longer in the surrounding material and released slowly, which means the heating system need only use cheap off-peak electricity. Many consumers favour ceramic

tiles in bathroom or kitchen areas, and this will need a more consistent supply of power. Properly installed with high-quality materials, electric underf oor heating will carry on warming your chilly winter mornings safely and silently for decades. Mason jars make great little pots for mini plants. Try a row of f ve or seven on a sideboard. Nothing says the ’70s like a maidenhair fern in the bathroom. But the steamy conditions of the bathroom create the perfect place for plants. For a modern twist, try a vertical garden of tiny clumps of moss on a recycled timber

Choose plants you have an emotional connection to – for example, a bush that is in your favourite shade, a f ower with a fragrance you have always loved or a small tree that reminds you of your childhood. Your garden should be a meaningful place to spend time in. Want a soothing outdoor space? Don’t go overboard with colour – in the landscaping, furniture or plants. Lots of green foliage with white f owers and raw timber looks great and is a calming colour scheme. Add a touch of formality with English box hedges that are clipped into shape. Regular tip pruning will keep ensure hedges stay thick and bushy.

HIA SUNSHINE COAST ROUNDUP SUNSHINE COAST BUILDERS COMPETE ON THE NATIONAL STAGE FOR AWARDS This month two local builders will fly the flag for the Sunshine Coast at the HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards which recognizes the best builders and designers across the country. These awards are considered to be the pinnacle of achievement for those that operate in the residential construction industry. Mees Construction (Outdoor Project & Bathroom Project) and Quail Constructions (Renovation/Addition Project) won their respective State award categories in November last year in Brisbane and will now go head-to-head with other State award winners. The Sunshine Coast has a rich tradition of winning Australian Housing Awards and with the quality of these latest entries there is every chance these two builders will add to the local collection. It is also worth mentioning that James Burrell Homes will compete in the HIA National Greensmart Awards as a result of winning the HIA State Energy Efficient Home category, with winners to be announced later in the year.

HIA wishes these builders the best of luck and looks forward to reporting on their success in future editions.

HIA WELCOMES THE CONTINUATION OF IMPROVED HOUSING CONDITIONS Both new detached homes and multi-unit buildings, and most parts of Queensland are benefiting from the recovery in home building. Until recently the detached home part of the new home building market had not recovered to anywhere near the same extent as multi-unit building. But recent ABS building approval figures show that detached home approvals for the March quarter are up 15 per cent on the

In the March quarter approvals increased by 35 per cent on the Sunshine Coast. This augurs well for the growth of the local economy. However, HIA will be working with industry and all levels of government to ensure this growth is not constrained by factors such as skills deficiencies, business red tape and a lack of affordable land supply.

HIA SUNSHINE COAST/WIDE BAY HOUSING AWARDS BACK IN 2014 Last year’s housing awards proved to be an overwhelming success but HIA is committed to delivering a bigger and better event in 2014. With all the traditional categories as well as some new categories that reflect changes in the way we build and the people involved in residential projects, the awards are ready made for the next wave of entries. The first bundle of entries have already been received with many more expected to be submitted between now and the final closing date of 15 August 2014 (early bird registration is 1 August). Judging by the quality of these early entries this year’s awards are set to be hotly contested and will once again showcase the building design and excellence that is a feature of the Sunshine Coast home building industry.
